      Hi Del, yes I would like to see you strip an engine downed completely, and rebuild, or the piston rings, or maybe, make your own bike, starting with the frame, the possibility’s are endless, if Jesse James, and the teutals can do it, I’m sure you can, and they made a lot of money doing it ! There is a guy from the states who has tackled quite a few wing jobs, but he is not in the same class as you, Clifford Rice, I think they call him, I believe you would do a fantastic job on the wing ! • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks mate.. being a 17k engine it's unlikely it'll be more than a simple clearance check, (they should be fine) and thats easy enough.. a higher mile bike would maybe need shims changed, and that's where the job gets technical, and we have to be careful where we lead viewers as small mistakes with deeper internal work can lead to expensive disasters.. with YT videos people tend to skip forward when anything gets technical and that's how important steps can get missed... so let's see how the clearance check goes and take it from there.. !

    Lots of people saying this Del....loving this project! Quite a complex looking operation today and very interesting. I’m looking forward to the carb work and any engine stuff.....actually do you ever have to do any internal engine stuff like pistons, crank, bearing stuff and the like? I’d love to see how all that works one day but i guess modern engines last a while these days? Nice one Del...kind regards.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, projects are insanely expensive and even this build is starting to push past it's retail value already, and of course privately we never consider anything like labour, it's all parts only, so if you start getting in to internal engine parts, be prepared for some massive expenses, so when I'm slecting a donor bike, the first consideration is the economics of the build as with here, I selected a very low mileage bike that was just left outside for much of it's life, same with the Hayabusa, all of the money was spent on the cycle parts, but I had a good quality 30k mile engine, as we have to balance the economics of the Channel, just can't afford to do 'no expense spared' builds, we have to budget as much as any business and thanks to your support, and that of other Patrons and companies who stand by us, we just about keep it on a level! Plus of course, what we are projecting is the message you can restore yourself an old bike without the need for expensive engine building and major overhauls, much of restoration is just cosmetics! Glad you're enjoying, have a good weekend, keep well there, Del

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks buddy, with the paint on gasket surfaces, it's wise not to file them because files are sharp enough to remove metal, but the Scotchbrite on a screwdriver blade isn't, it'll only remove the paint, and something like a banjo union face only needs a couple of strokes of a file, and it'll almost certainly leak, so just go careful if you're gonna use them, even sandpaper can do damage to metal, remember it;s only soft aluminium... thanks for watching buddy, and thanks for your support.

    Just get a set of silicone hoses. Run that long one from the pump OUTBOARD of the carbs up to thermostat. But, having seen the water you dumped earlier, your entire cooling system needs a complete washout/check. Bin there, dun it on my T'Bird Sport, probably deeper than you're doing. Have fun. BTW, replace those grotty alternator nutz after you service it. Another bit of "what I found", make sure air intake is not restricted, unless you wanna go slow. Perhaps consider renewing the air breather/filter - it comes as as a complete unit :( That requires removal of carbs! (I got my air box cleaner from Italy - and now you'll have to pay extra tax on any items from EU!!!!) Talking of which, while carbs are out might as well rebuild them too... oh, never bin there :)

    Sometime try using nipple couplings between hydraulic lines and cylinders. Since they're made to not impede fluid flow, quick actuations of the clutch lever (or pedal) feel easier since the fluid doesn't have to make six(!) 90° turns as it would when flowing through two banjo couplings. Nipple couplings are also easier to bleed since there are fewer corners for the bubbles to lurk.

      @@Moonfleet41 Haha you too. I've never seen the heated metal and engine oil(?) trick, I'm going to give that one a go soon. Next mental challenge is findout out how to 'do' the valve clearances. I've never tackled that one before, especially after getting a £620 bill two years ago to service and check/adjust valve clearances. What's worse is that he told me they did not need adjusting as they were all within tolerance. Yes, I was too scared to tell the wife the bill. I'm man enough to admit I down right lied. • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scottmurray5600 Yeah, it is insanely expensive, as it's so time heavy... it's no garage's fault, it just takes a long while and of course there are two jobs here that we're talking about, there's checking the clearances are within tolerance, and then there's the more difficult and technical job of rectifying things when it's not... some bikes, like the GSXR engines are literally adjustable, they have a small adjuster screw with a lock nut, so pretty easy to do, but most bikes have shims that need physically changing, and again on most bikes, to change a shim means removing the cam shafts and putting them back again in an incorrect alignment, once you've changed your shim, can lead to massive internal engine destruction, so I won't be showing anything like that due to people's incurable instance on skipping through videos, and not watching everything... I'll be showing how to check them as that's purely measuring a gap, and not beyond the skill of most people, but I'll be advising to take the bike to a professional for any adjustment, sadly this is the only way I can safely play it to cover myself... and, of course, prevent any serious prob elms from the over enthusiastic out there who just want to side step the bills... (however, understandable that might be), it's never worth writing off your engine just to save a few quid!

I get a real sense of pride/satisfaction from doing most of my own maintenance...I do review your videos a few times to check I'm doing it right though. Even my local bike shop refused to check/shim the valves! It was a main dealer near Glasgow that did the work, hence the high cost.
