It's a shame you didn't make this video earlier, I just painted the whole engine of my Bandit 600. I used Simonize as well but the Engin Enamel instead of Tough one. I was not sure the Tough paint will be heat resistant enough. Black Enamel comes comes only as gloss or matt so I settled for matt. On all the cover including rocker, i used the Tough Satin through, it looks great. Now i have to cut out all the cover gaskets and will start putting the bike togethers
I've just used Simoniz Matt Black Engine Enamel on my Bandit engine, and it feels powdery. I've got a can of Satin Black Tough Paint on the shelf, and after seeing you use it on your engine, I'm thinking about going over mine with it.

Hi Del, currently restoring a Honda Vtr 1000 firestorm. I need to paint the engine and was just wondering what your thoughts are on painting the whole engine with the Tough Paint? I've seen you repaint another engine using the Simonez Engine Paint so just looking to see if you have noticed any difference between the two? Thanks
Hi Iain, I've found over the years that engines don't get hot enough to burn Tough Paint, just let is cure fully for a fair few days and then fire it up and let it idle till it warms up and the fan kicks in, then switch it off and let it cool right down, this seems to cure the paint just fine and then it lasts really well... the only place it may be vulnerable is round the exhaust manifold area, but personally I've never even seen it discolour on the bikes I've done, and that includes air cooled Harleys... full degreasing the metal is really important though, even perhaps, roast off the engine metal surface with a blow torch gently before you paint in order to vapourise any contaminants!
Just a little bit of Elbow Grease & look what you have achieved! (Well actually it was quite a lot of Elbow Grease). Give yourself a pat on the back Mate. My Suzuki has gone just like that. I'm not looking forward to doing it but it's so rewarding & i reckon just by doing that it's as good as adding £500 GBP to the value.
pro tip: use as wire wheel brush on an angle grinder and die grinder to strip paint, rust and oxidation down to bare metal super pro tip: use paint stripper first
Chemical strippers can be your worst nightmare, one tiny scrap of it left on (IN) the surface and it will come back to haunt you by wrecking the new paint.
Looking good Del! I'm looking forward to seeing what you have planned for the exhaust. I wish that Simoniz paint was readily available here in the USA; I gather it's quite common in the UK, but sadly not here.
Hi Donald, Good to hear from you, i hear form a few guys over there then Simoniz don't sell paint over there, but for this which is just a stone chip style paint, have a look at the Rustoleum range, i think they do a few options that do much the same thing..!!
Nice job Del, always better when you have the right tools. Looking forward to the exhaust build mate, you will just have to learn to tig weld lol. Penny and you have a good week. Cheers
awesome update Del! What are some possible equivalent paints to Simoniz Tough Paint? Going to be spraying my frame down (similar to your ZX7 build) during the process of repairing my ZX9 after my gravel excursion at the track and can't find this paint anywhere in Canada.
Hi mate, good to hear from you... if you can't find the Tough Paint range, I've heard a lot of guys in the USA talk about Rustoleum... and apparently it's quite good, I don't know which exact product you'd need, but the Tough Paint is a durable, stone chip paint for chassis and crash bars, so maybe Rustoleum do something similar??
Just a safety comment... When wire wheel cleaning nuts.... At least screw them onto a bolt, this will give you extra grip, and versatility, and... save your fingers from a woopsie moment... lol 🤔😎
Hi David.. well it worked here, not sure how the heat will change the colour around the ports later, maybe turn ti a little grey at the hottest spot.. but ive used this paint a dozen times in many different applications and it's really durable and tough.
@@davidcort2857 I wouldn't know mate, the world of paint products is huge and wide, this has never let me down, so ive never looked for more i guess..!
Wow now well done man that's looks a million times better and your not even going to see it 👍👍 I have a query I've had the exhaust stud out I snapped off with the new ones what would you recommend putting them in with eg with some sort of lub like copper slip or put them in dry no lub and what seconds brain picker what would you recommend the peg and nut be made of 🤔. Hope you and penny are good man 👍
If you're fitting a new exhaust stud mate, then some anti-seize compound is a good idea, copper is fine and works ok, or you could find an alu-slip product instead... but something is certainly better than nothing that's for sure!
Yes it does mate, simple heat expansion of the gases inside the can force down on the paint liquid a bit harder, and gives you a finer atomization, a great way to get every drop of paint and the best value for money!
What a sod of a job, nice work. Please use a high temp anti seize on those studs, aluminium, heat cycles and stainless steel can and do stick together. Anti seize will orevent that. Gloves are a good idea with degreasers, but youre a big boy and know this anyway, I just hope you dont end up with the hands i have, 40 plus years of being covered in oil, grease and mank and until realitively recently no realy effective gloves that protect you that you can actually work in. Please sent the name of the beer you were drinking when you came up with the idea of the busa.... Love your work Cheers
The studs are only finger spun for now, so I know where to find them... they will be double nutted and torqued in place and indeed I shall use either some AL1100 or at the very least some copper anti-seize... thanks for your support mate.
My son made his own exhaust for his Land Rover Trialer using pre made bends and a mig, but it's not as on show as it is on a bike but looking forward to the next episode

Well done del , got to say that looks mint , also can you let me know what make your air ratchet is as that a great idea , I did my wide glide over winter by hand and it took bloody ages lol
Hi mate, popped a link under the video now since this has become quite a popular little tool, but to save you the time, here's the link anyway: www.sealey.co.uk/product/5637189239/generation-air-angle-die-grindersander-kit-42pc
Not sure where you are buddy, if you're in the States, then Harbor Freight do some insanely cheap ones that are perfectly usable, even for painting, and if you're in the UK, the Sealey range of compressors is equally good value at the entry level... it's worth treating yourself, not just as a garage tool, but it's a safe, efficient and accurate way to keep your bike (and car) tyre pressures quickly checked before every ride...

Looking good Del! I'm looking forward to seeing what you have planned for the exhaust. I wish that Simoniz paint was readily available here in the USA; I gather it's quite common in the UK, but sadly not here.
Hi Donald, Good to hear from you, i hear form a few guys over there then Simoniz don't sell paint over there, but for this which is just a stone chip style paint, have a look at the Rustoleum range, i think they do a few options that do much the same thing..!!
i enjoyed that nearly as much as i think you did , Glints back in your eyes ,
Cracking job there. Looking forward to the thingy. Thanks :)
You and me both mate!
I used the gloss black on engine case super glossy hope it stays like it will use matt for engine thanks
Delboy's Garage thanks as always Del
Nice job👍🏻I even like the glossy look🤣👍🏻
It might have been easier to pull the engine and bead blast it. Then you could paint the whole thing.
Just a safety comment... When wire wheel cleaning nuts.... At least screw them onto a bolt, this will give you extra grip, and versatility, and... save your fingers from a woopsie moment... lol 🤔😎
Cheers mate, good advice indeed!
Every work need time to creat best ...🇮🇳🇮🇳🙏👍👍👍👍👍
looking great good luck with the exhaust LOL
Hi Del, could the same paint and process be done on my 600 Bandit ?
Hi David.. well it worked here, not sure how the heat will change the colour around the ports later, maybe turn ti a little grey at the hottest spot.. but ive used this paint a dozen times in many different applications and it's really durable and tough.
@@Moonfleet41 Thanks Del.
@@Moonfleet41 Do you think there is a more robust paint out there ?
@@davidcort2857 I wouldn't know mate, the world of paint products is huge and wide, this has never let me down, so ive never looked for more i guess..!
@@Moonfleet41 Marvellous thanks, sorry to bother you on a Sunday.
@@Moonfleet41 thanks del I have seen copper exhaust studs and nuts recon they would be any good ?
The cleaning part was like therapy, awesome.. does warming the spray can help it flow?
Yes it does mate, simple heat expansion of the gases inside the can force down on the paint liquid a bit harder, and gives you a finer atomization, a great way to get every drop of paint and the best value for money!
@@Moonfleet41 perfect thanks.
Love your work
Cheers
The studs are only finger spun for now, so I know where to find them... they will be double nutted and torqued in place and indeed I shall use either some AL1100 or at the very least some copper anti-seize... thanks for your support mate.
I use that paint on all my bikes, it usually dries to a satin finish quite fast
excellent paint use it a lot at work
do many colours nice job👍
Del, great job, is that the same black paint you used for the fork legs on the Foxdawg?
Yes it is mate, and the rocker covers and the wheels on the ZX7R and just about anything I've ever painted satin black!
Very nice Dell.
3 into 1.....TURBO!!! ;-)
'Stumpy', the blown Leg end . . .
Del makes everything look great!
My son made his own exhaust for his Land Rover Trialer using pre made bends and a mig, but it's not as on show as it is on a bike but looking forward to the next episode
Memories of my last trip to the dentist 😀
Miło się ciebie ogląda, jesteś debeściak. Pozdrawiam
Good stuff with the welding fella, about to take a college course for tig. 🙏👍
Go for it mate, you'll be better qualified than I am for sure... on my bucket list!
I've used Simoniz UHT matt black on my radiator and oil cooler and oil lines.
Let's hope it will stand the abuse of the elements on the uk roads
Nice job young man, pleased to see craftsmanship still exists. I am renovating my stepsons bandit and have just used wrinkle finish heatproof paint on the engine. Looks great and contrasts well with the black gloss on the rest of the bike. Thanks for the vid, stay safe, all the best.
Hi there, that sounds like a good project and I can imagine that came out pretty well... good luck with it, and thanks for your support.
Jice as usual ... studs arevthe way to go fir exhausts ..im using said studs given ive just had to rebuild my gsx 14 abive crack case ..mission all over heafer studs ..engine is in tv's to go in and rig rest if it up ....been to long lol
Delboy's Garage - cheers del I appreciate it , keep up the good works 😜👍
Looks new,bit of patience works wonders.
Great video fantastic job really looking forward to next one stay safe 🇬🇧👍🏻
Tough black doesn't say anything about being a high temp paint you sure it will hold up?
Proof of the pudding and all that, the bike's still on the road in regular use, and the paint's in fine condition!
Beautiful job Del
Very nice job ! Congratulations !
Id love to have a compressor, make life easier lol. nice job
Not sure where you are buddy, if you're in the States, then Harbor Freight do some insanely cheap ones that are perfectly usable, even for painting, and if you're in the UK, the Sealey range of compressors is equally good value at the entry level... it's worth treating yourself, not just as a garage tool, but it's a safe, efficient and accurate way to keep your bike (and car) tyre pressures quickly checked before every ride...
so I'm really looking forward to those exhausts !!!
