Welcome to this elementary Mandarin class. I am Sisi Laoshi.
在zài/正zhèngzài can be used as auxiliary verbs to express that an action is ongoing or in progress.
Subject + 在zai/正在zhengzai +verb object +（呢ne）
妈妈在打电话。māma zhèng zài dǎ diànhuà. Mum is making a phone call.
哥哥在睡觉呢。Gēge zài shuìjiào ne. Older brother is sleeping.
You can use 正在 (zhèngzài) instead of just 在 (zài) to put a little more emphasis on an action that is in progress right now.
姐姐正在跳舞呢。Jiějie zhèngzài tiàowǔ ne. Older sister is dancing.
The negative form:
subject 没在méizài/没 méi + verb + object
** No 呢 at the end of the sentence
他们没在上班。Tāmen méizài shàngbān. They are not working.
