I picked my first lock with two paper clips and the thrill of it was pure joy! got a master lock open (it took a good bit of time) guys at work have bet me money I couldn't open their tool boxes (they lost) I found a new hobby and you found yourself a new subscriber
Careful with that, if tools go missing, you may be the first person they go to. Perhaps work with them in getting more pick-resistant locks to deter that.
Hehe, picked my first lock in 4th grade, there was a cabinet door with a cheap no-name Chinese laminated 4-pin between me and the teacher's "reward candy" jar. The lock was so shit I folded out the middle bit of a paperclip so it was just one big key-shaped loop and it could be used exactly like a key. I got caught eventually because all the blue raspberry now&laters kept selectively disappearing, the teacher was blown away when I showed her how I did it.
@@Suiseisexy Yeah my grandfather used to keep his werther originals locked up in a cabinet and I figured out that if you just slide something all the way into the lock, there was a thin spring or something you could push on at the back of the keyway and it would pop right open.

Counter rotation is the easiest to explain when you pick a spool or something similar as you lift up on the pin the core will turn the opposite way of tension a false set is when you pick a pin or pins and the core gives but doesn't open
Honestly imo the only way to really understand counter rotation is to find or have a locksmith build a lock that has different styles of spool pins and just try picking it you will start to get the feel and you will understand a lot more a lot faster I'm an amateur lock picker myself and it's all in trying you have to get a feel for it more than anything
@@greg123294 so counter rotation only applies to spool pins? Is it the opposing force created when picking a lock like say you're applying tension in one direction and while you're picking the lock the core turns in the opposite direction of which you're applying tension?

Alright Steve (and/or Steven, whichever you prefer) I have to ask, where are you coming up with these cute little copper (or possibly oiled bronze?) locks at? Please point me in the right direction to purchase a couple. I would greatly appreciate it.
Have you ever ran into someone making a resin casting of a key to open locks? Just wondering if its possible to make a silicon mold of a key and using a polyester or similar resin to make a duplicate.
He mentions it in several videos, and I believe it's linked to on his lock lab site. Panavise, can't remember which version but somewhere in it all he tells what model combo his is.

If you can't find them on Amazon now though, alternatively, just look them up on Google for products available. Hope this helps and happy picking. 😊
I’m a newb to picking but can I ask a question about the different sizes of plug followers? Is there a standard size range to consider as a set for my tool bag?
Are there any free pinning tray, and or plug follower downloads for the 3d printer? I have access to one at college and couldn't think of a better way of making use of my out of district tuition costs.
Bill's Channel, but the comment is for Steven. :) Steven, your wood working skills are awesome, man. The trays that you did for Bill show great craftsmanship. I enjoy watching you pick locks I have had a chance to pick a couple lock when u was about 8 or 9 yr old bc my dad when throw lock smith school I actually miss doing it I have been thinking about doing it again
Hello! First of all, I would like to thank you for your consistent, entertaining, informative videos! I'm a budding lock picking enthusiast. As of now my "set" consists of a homemade paperclip torsion wrench and pick. They are functional (just barely!), however, they can't and won't ever truly be reliable and are obviously dangerous for the few locks I have available to practice with. My question for you: what is the most versatile pick and other absolutely essential tools, that won't break the bank, for a budding tumbler teaser? Thanks again!
Ok Bill it's been 5 or 6 months now since I've seen your first video and you turned me into a picker. You said a while back you would see if you had a couple of locks you would send me but I never got them. Ok now that I started my own channel I need locks so now I beg of you I don't want my videos to slow down. Having to much fun. :-)
False set is when the pins in the lock set into the serrations or into the spools and then turn the core a little bit but they are still blocking the chamber from turning, look at this pic for better understanding :) learnlockpicking.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/cylinder_spool1.jpg
I see you got one of those spiffy c clip tools like LPL has. I gotta get one of those. The screwdriver and curse word method just isn't reliable enough. Anyway, good pick as usual Bill.
Yes, "over-set" is when a key pin has been pushed too far up, so that it's top is above the sheer line (whereas "set" means that the top of the key pin is AT the sheer line).
when you get a false set (partial movement of the core), when you pick another pin you will find the core will rotate back slightly. That is counter rotation.
I have never picked a lock, just watched some videos but I have to say I immediately thought: why doesn't he use bottom of the keyway tension? Me: 'whatever I'm a noob he probably has his reasons.' Then he switches 😏
Didn't like how you used that bottom tension. Obviously it worked for you but I don't like it when the tension wrench is in the way of leverage. I have a Trioving (bane of my existence) that has a similar shelf I work off of. So I put a wrench in to stop the pick from falling but I use TOK tension so I face the wrench the other way so I can pull down further. you'd have to see it. The one reg pin tumbler I haven't been able to get in my first set down with it.
im a big fan of your channel bill..but when you already try to "black out" the personal information and tracking number, please do it right...anyone still can read the stuff written on it.

Haha.
I just love those lockpicking videos.
I am a big fan of simply raking the pins first. You get lucky often
