YSC I recommend just clicking away from the video without clicking dislike as TH-cam tracks and counts all types of interactions towards a video, both positive and negative.
pretending to pick a lock seems about as satisfying as pretending to solve a crossword puzzle.

Handwavium and bullshit and magician's (or video editor's) tricks might fool the ignorant masses, but they never pass hard scrutiny. Especially when they (conveniently) can never reproduce the results on demand under controlled conditions.
Lockpicking (and computer hacking) has been "anarchy cookbook" stuff online since even before the internet. It always attracts fools who aren't able to work hard, learn, and apply real skills. Video pollution is just the latest method of swaggering "dangerous" knowledge around to impress the impressionable, especially since so many lazy people think getting enough viewers (to watch garbage) is an easy way to get rich. Can a guy defeat a high-security lock in less than 10 seconds? Well, no, but who cares, as long as enough people believe he can and subscribe for more.
@bosnianbill - you don't need to apologize for performing "poorly" in comparison to internet trash. Your stuff is obviously legit, even if you're "limited" to "only" accomplishing real things in the actual amount of time they really require.

Chastity belts go back in style and all of a sudden locksmiths are getting more than they could ever dream of.
The movie "Robin Hood, Men in Tights" the last line in the movie where the girl is wearing a chastity belt is "Call the locksmith".
The videos that piss me off are the many bump key videos that have panicked the public. I'm a locksmith myself and I know bumping is a good method but I don't ever regard it as my first choice to open a lock. These videos have pressured manufactures to over react and come up with a lot of junk such as Kwicksets Smartkey, which can be forced open with a hammer and screwdriver or the Schlage Secure Key, which was so undependable they discontinued them after a few years. Skilled pickers like yourself are not running around and breaking in houses. I never find locks picked in my work. Just a lot of smashed doors. That's the reality of security. Locks only keep the honest people honest. That desperate drug addict is not learning a skill, they are just smashing their way in.
I couldn't agree with you more. I have a lot of LEO friends and not a single one of them has ever found a crime scene where they've suspected lock picking took place. LOTS of kicked in doors, broken window panels and removed basement casings though. In cases where there was no damage, the homeowner simply forgot to lock the door, letting the thief walk right in. Insofar as bumping, there was a big flash in the pan, but in practice it just doesn't seem to be popular with criminals. Perhaps because it requires prior knowledge of the type of lock so they can bring the correct key. Or maybe they aren't willing to invest an hour or so of their time to learn how to do it correctly. It ain't magic.
bosnianbill I have 20 years law enforcement experience with several years in a burglary unit, I've never seen a break in that involved picking locks. Most were doors/windows left unlocked and the rest were forced entries door jambs split and those short screws in strike plates.
Gnome Star the door here was kicked in by an in basil and the door just splits and jams everything unless your going to finish the job,don't bother trying to kick the door in, the cops are going to nail this bastard, but they won't go into his house, why the hell not,he's got a warent out for his arrest and they say they can't go into his house without a warent, he has a restraint order against him and they still won't arrest him!
In many jurisdictions, I believe possession of lock picks, bump tools, etc. are separate crimes by themselves, so a dope with heavy tools in a pickup is not committing any offense unless caught with the goods. In addition, many thieves will skim through a block testing for unlocked back doors or windows, and just using ordinary security will be adequate deterrence when your neighbor's door is unlocked.

Just getting into lockpicking, been watching tons of your videos in the last week, haven't had to worry about frauds because you seem to have the best video for almost anything lock related. The end rant is great. I love you. I'll be your groupie cheering you on on the side of the road lmao
I stick to bill, lpl, lock noob, lock lab just name a few of the top of my head
Way back when, I used to get two of the same lock. Take one apart to study the mechanical workings, and 'finesse' the other one open.
Pick, shim, hammer, punch, torch: whatever worked!
I gave myself points for:
1) Being able to use lock again
2) Not leaving signs of breach
3) Quick/quiet
4) Low tools count or tools not obviously a breaching kit.
This was cheap locks available in the mid 1970's, so not too challenging, or expensive.

After watching a bunch of lock picking videos from youtube, I'm asking myself "Why did I not look at this one first?" Well said Bill. I think you do a great service to those interested in learning how to be a locksmith. So huge props to you, in my book.

Tricksters (or whatever you want to call them) only push others down because they can't go up. So that's the only way they'll ever feel superior. In the end, they're the skill-less people.
So I opened my first Master lock with a set of "soup can" picks from eBay. Maybe I should start making Videos at night in my truck without a tripod in wind storms. Sounds logical to me

It's truly a shame that anyone that finds it necessary to fake a successful pick is someone that has truly lost the plot. The harder a lock is for me to pick, the bigger my grin is when my tension bar finally gives way to my efforts. I wouldn't cheapen that feeling for anything.

I took up lock picking as a means to help me quit smoking 🚬 and was easily discouraged as I am very mechanically inclined and usually pick things up right away. This is the first video from this channel I ever saw and I certainly wouldn't be the picker I am today and may have never quit smoking without him. Thanks for the video I was fooled by the phony videos. I talked to a local locksmith and his opinion was that locks buy time. Any lock or system can be defeated given the time, effort and financing.

I have just recently entered the into picking and infact only just bought a pick set, after a few months of using bobby pins, paper clips, and a homemade hacksaw pick. However after filtering through and watching many crap and fake videos i got very disinterested. until i came across your channel. I have learned a lot after watching almost all of your videos, so thanks heaps and now you have another follower from Australia.

Why is a good question. I think it's fame and self-congratulation. I know someone at a metal detecting club and a new guy joined who started finding all kinds of treasure, a major find every week almost. People gathered round him congratulating him, he loved it. It was proven in the end he was buying stuff on Ebay and 'discovering' it. Seems with these people they've genuinely not got the talent or dedication and faking's the only shortcut to get some kind of attention.
yeah its the same with liars.they seem to have different compartments of the brain where one denies the other is real.
I'm a beginner lockpicker, and I pretty quickly realized that I can trust you and LockPickingLawyer. There are others who make good videos, but you two are the only ones I trust 100%. This problem doesn't just apply to lockpicking though - any instructional content on TH-cam (or the Internet in general) needs to be scrutinized and verified by looking at other people's content, because any goofball can throw together a fake video and fool a beginner who's just here to learn. Good stuff, Bill.

When a lock has tight tolerances, there is no slop in the chambers. Under those circumstances, it is VERY difficult to feel when a normal pin sets. Example: Best locks have no security pins but are notoriously hard to pick. Locks with security pins give good feedback so it makes it a little easier to figure out what is going on. Admittedly, some pins are harder than others (serrated). Also, chamber design can influence how hard it is as well, things like counter milling or serrations.
Since I'm JUST getting into the entire bit of locksport, seeing you and the other gentleman (LPL) have greatly increased not only my confidence, but the belief that it's possible to open a lock.
I'm still learning, and I appreciate you, your honesty (not ignoring LPL's).
Unless you recommend a new channel, I won't be checking very many people out... Because I'm... Well I wouldn't say I'm afraid, I'm just wary of charlatans.

Some years ago I was moving across the country and managed to come down with the flue. I had my mother help get the moving truck back to the drop off point. I had fill the tank and got out and locked the door without thinking, because I was very sick. I locked myself out of course. I had my mother go and purchase a blank that I filed into a raker and had the door open in two rakes. My mother was horrified. Fords are way to easy being right up with Master Lock. Thank you for great content and integrity.

I need a better explanation of your disk detainer pick that you and LPL made with sparrows. I've wanted to melt it down so many times, but it looks so damn good. Ordering an acrylic disk detainer lock to see what is going on. I can't feel or hear anything set. You and LPL are still my go to guys. Keep doing what you do.

I had always chocked it up to the fact that I don't practice much as I don't have much need to open many locks that I don't have a key for. This makes me pity the poor fools who are that starved and desperate for attention. What a sad life...
The most common fake technique on TH-cam is recording multiple attempts but just posting the one that happened to work.
That is just called practice.

I remember a video from several years ago in which a guy demonstrated his amazing ability to pick an Abloy 362 in about 60 seconds using a "special tool" that he had developed. No demo or closeup on the tool, no gutting, several sloppy video cuts. Lock in one hand, "tool" in other hand, lots of movement, bingo, it's open. "And...uh...the tool is available from me...just contact blah blah blah." The most egregious fake I've ever seen. Happily, it disappeared soon thereafter.
Thanks Bill! I started with the cheap locks and then progressed on and am now able to effectively open an american without too many problems. My point is, as I started and gained confidence, I moved to more difficult locks. When I got to one I couldn`t open I went to youtube and there was the guy opening the same lock in 30 seconds, a huge hit to my confidence. You hit the nail on the head when you said "understand how they work" It makes for a more effective picker and more able to spot fakes.

Y'know... As a therapist, your suggestion of shaming them baffles me. However, as a locksport enthusiast, I say go with it.
I would like to note that your bit about the undermining of confidence is very true, especially when it comes to social media. People will do everything they can to show their 'A' side, the good side if you will. Lying by commission or omission, fakery, anything to hide the 'B' side and make it look like they are better. It has lead to eating disorders, body dysmorphia, you name it. It all boils down to confidence. So I appreciate this video, four years later. Thank you, Bill.
In hindsight, you are absolutely right about the "shaming" part. After that video a lot of people started questioning the validity of questionable videos by leaving comments, but the person posting the (probably fake) video simply abandoned the account and disappeared. No shame entered into the formula. I appreciate your comment!
thanks for so many of your videos Bill, I first picked up lock-picking about 10 + years ago when I worked at a used car dealer and we would get cars and with broken or missing keys for the trunk or glove box but when I stopped working there it just fell by the wayside I don't even know what became of my picks and then about four months ago I picked it up again as a hobby to me it's like an advanced form of a puzzle like Rubik's Cube anyhow I have learned a lot from watching your videos so thank you.

Thanks Bill!!! I was waiting for this video mate. I would even say that book tittles like "Open in thirty seconds" are misleading because you need YEARS of practise to pick like that! To be a good lockpicker you need to practise every day and that is something most bad guys just don't do.
It is the same reason why people cheat in computer games; they just want to feel great. Don't know why cheating makes you feel great I have never done it before.

@bosnianbill thanks for sharing your thoughts, as a beginner i really appreciate the video, as it keeps me sane knowing, it can even drive you nuts.
I like your style for showing how stuff works AND for showing this about how to make stuff seem like it works. As far as marketing goes, this also shows how people can make competitors' locks look weak. I only remember picking one lock so far; and it was such a stupid design, I took it as a challenge to show that both components were faulty.
The target was a TSA luggage lock (looking it up, something like a Safe Skies 3... black, mostly rectangular, red flame logo, red retainer). The lock was sitting around, combination not available. I took a paperclip or something to the TSA lock side and spun the retainer to release the lock bar, but I wanted the combination. I re-locked the retainer and wrapped Ethernet cord around myself and through the bar for opening tension and spun the dials incrementally. I don't remember the timing, but I think I did the entire thing within 40 minutes... "picking" the TSA side was the easy & direct way. I recall the lock being flimsy enough to break in a number of ways; but not breaking it allows it to appear as though a TSA key had been used (consistent with existing reports that they steal from bags and that they already have a shared key scenario with thousands of key copies so that anyone with the right TSA key or a paperclip could have popped the lock).
Even that brass padlock can be doctored - have a good look and you'll see on the edge where the pins are 5 circular marks - that are the plugs that holds the springs and top pins. The other tricks they use is to replace the top pins with bottom pins so it's much easier to pick - try it for yourself - throw out the top pins and relace them with bottom pins pointing down and ! ! !

Oh my God. Thank you so much for this vid. I just got into this hobby and I was able to pick some cheaper locks fairly easy. BUT, I also have an American lock from years ago that I just cant pick and it drove me crazy. Now I know to just put that one aside and wait till I have more experience. Again sir' THANK YOU... I love watching you work these locks. It's fascinating.

Thank you for posting this video. Although I rarely look at other pickers, it's good to know these tricks. Having been a Banker in the past, and just doing office work while handling millions of other people's money, it never occurred to me at any time to do any sort of embezzling, etc. I guess I was born without the con Gene in me.
It wasn't until after leaving banking and going good back to do a variety of jobs that I found that I was gullible in the extreme because I don't look for the hustle or the angle that other people do.

Just saw a comment to stay away from the master 140 series for learning because they have security pins. I bought one today as my first purchase as a locksport enthusiast without knowing this. I've managed to spp it 8 times today with a section of modified wiper retainer and a modified hair pin. Your videos are obviously doing great at teaching. Thanks, Bill. I may inquire about some locks in the very near future, when my picks come in!

possibly found it was easy to rake and decided that was the one to use for the video , I repo'd a Bronco 2-3 times, I knew which rocker pick to grab and use as a key, the last time it was picked up another driver got it, I told him over the radio which pick to use , it worked ...... never doubt your ability, Ive been out of it for a couple decades and learned alot from you from these videos , i might pick up it up again as a hobby, still have the same pick set i bought in 96 ... never messed with padlocks tho ....... thanks for doing these
