How much effort would it have taken turned upright? I started watching these to determine which lock of reasonable cost is hardest to pick or beat by other means in a realistic setting.

Lockpickinglawyer picks it the correct way it's meant to be installed and he had to use a magnet to overcome the magnetic pin, a lot better watch because he picks it the proper way

You are correct about putting it upside down. I was trying to open my door for hours in the end I turned my house upside down and I was in within minutes

use the notch in the end of the follower. turn it back and forth so it releases one pin at a time. Assemble the lock in the same fashion, load one, turn, load second, turn, load third and push the follower to the next set of three and repeat.

Hey Bill, already been mentioned in the comments but since you didn't mention it, the logo on the front you can read the BSI, it's known as the Kitemark. It means the product has passed the BSI tests, which are often used on mains plugs, crash helmets etc as an independent (and expensive) certification process to assure a quality product. It's not a legal requirement to have BSI certification but having that mark usually is the sign of a quality product.
Note that one important feature of the lock wasn't defeated. Although Bill managed a complete turn of the barrel, the lock actuator didn't move. Door would have been still locked after all that work.
After watching this video and LPL's pick of the same lock I quickly bought the ABS lock for my own front door. So i think Avocet the manufacturers owe you guys a drink.

After watching your videos and becoming quite competent at lock picking I replaced all of my locks with these ABS Avocet cylinders. Living in the UK it was quite reassuring to see that that they are not the easiest of locks to pick, especially when they are the right way up.

Well if either of you guys find stuff missing from your homes with no visible sign of forced entry, then the thief probably used the tool in the video I posted above, in fact that is an older version of the tool with 5 blades each one with the magnet in a different position, the newer tool only uses 1 blades with magnets in all 5 positions, so you just walk up and stick the blade in the lock and could use a set of mole grips to rock it left and right until it opens, then do the same when leaving to lock the door.

Strange because every ABS lock I have used my tool on has popped open in a few seconds, you just have to make sure you have the correct blade inserted for the magnet position, and make sure the foam inserts are still springy. I haven't used the newer single blade with magnets in all five positions.
I have this lock in UK. This week it seized and now I can't use my lock. Phoned lock Smith. He said it's a common problem, sometimes it get into its anti whatever mode and you have to snap it and drill it from the inside. Going to cost me more for it own fault. He recommended Ultion locks. These ones you can open from the inside if snapped or in anti whatever mode. Worth getting these instead. He also said sometimes the magnet on the key picks bits up and gets stuck inside which can also cause jamming issues. Nice lock but shame it locks itself!

The phrase that comes to mind with this lock is "no user-serviceable parts inside". Kudos for seeing that gutting through. No way would I have that much patience or clarity of eyesight.

Hi Bill. Great video as always. I've worked as a Locksmith in the U.K. for over 20 years now and your picking method is some of the best I've seen. The 3 big pins at the bottom of the Avocet ABS cylinder are hardened and there to stop you trying to drill it as well as all the others. Keep up the great videos. Dan
I remember seeing it in one of LPL's videos: I'm pretty sure that those three larger holes in the bottom of the core are for more drill protection plugs.
That's the kind of lock I'd like to have on my front door , amazing design , and well picked Bill you're a patient man !

They key logo on the pocket knife is the logo of a former Swiss bank called "Schweizerischer Bankverein". It was one of the two predecessor banks that formed current UBS. The card shows the Rhine river cargo port of Birsfelden/Basel, Switzerland and Basel itself in the background.

this is definitely one of those locks that someone would certainly have to be sure there's something worthy of spending this kind of time on to get into, with this being the only viable point of entry

Bill, I believe that the lock was construction keyed. Once the new owner used thier key to open the lock those three pins you found on the bottom of the cylinder became trapped rendering the construction key useless.

Reckless Roges he's not British so doubt he knows about the BSI standards.
We have BSI Canada. Although it's "just another" standards/compliance stamp like CSA, ISO, ANSI, UL, FCC, etc. The kitemark is a very meaningful measure of quality on some types of products and basically worthless on other types of products, just like any of the other labels.
This might not be the best or most secure lock ever made, but it's the most treacherous one I've ever seen.
Such a complicated lock but you picked it much faster than previous locks.
I've got "some" memory issues, I'm 63 so not to bad but you are really something. I wouldn't even try to understand that lock. you've got incredible skill, and some darn good videos. I'll be passin through from time to time, locks were always an interest to me. thanks.
The solid pins on the bottom (top if rotated correctly) are more anti-drill pins.
im a diesel mechanic, ive never tinkered with locks before but ive been watching a few of your videos and I definitely have some motivation to give it a go, after all its just mechanical manipulation. will definitely keep watching and ive subscribed. btw awesome job on that crazy lock!
Great job on this complex lock... I think they are one of the most innovative out there. One important feature that you may not have noticed was the active snap protection... the cam mechanism seizes up (it locks to the inner cylinder) if you manage to snap the cylinder behind the cut. I showed it on my video featuring this lock: th-cam.com/video/zq5rGjt-9rQ/w-d-xo.html Also, that complex cam requires you to push a little button at the back of the keyway at the exact right moment during picking -- otherwise, you will not turn the cam even if you pick the lock. The cam mechanism is really quite good! .I'm still confused how this lock opened without actuating the magnetic pin... it looked like the magnetic pin was operating correctly, and it is not gravity dependent. As for the slugs on the bottom, I'm at a loss also. I can't figure out what they are for. Pure speculation: maybe they are to attract magnets inserted in the keyway to keep them away from the magnetic pin. Finally, if you want me to put the lock back together, send it my way. I've done it a few times, and once you have a system, it's not too bad.
huxleypig69 There is also a small spring holding the magnetic pin in the shear line. It should work fine regardless of gravity or lock orientation.
Late reply but since this lock was disused due to wear that spring might have failed.

Would the pins fall into the holes in the bottom if the slugs were removed and the inside was rotated too far?
LockPickingLawyer why didn't the actuator turn when he picked it did you notice that? In a real door this means a u lock wouldn't occur. Hope to hear back from you with the answer why thanks.

For non Brits heart shape symbol on the front of the lock is a Kite mark indicating that the lock matches one of the national security levels. The Kite mark is on many tools and devices. They've been tested according to agreed standards and passed.
For my house insurance they insisted on a Kite mark with three stars, the highest level of security. Bill has had bother picking those but did succeed in the end in if I remember correctly.
Make a video of its reassembly. I watched 28min of you taking it apart...i'll watch twice that to see it go back together!
Would be much more safe, if the brand was not on the lock, so that it's harder to guess which lock it is, so that it's harder to guess the correct technique.
But it would be easier to pick if they wrote down the size of the key on the outside.
Anyone with the skills to open it is already going to have heard of it.
back of the core is designed to pin it - notice the cutouts for the little sidepins, you put the main pin first, slide the core to lock it in, then insert the minipins
could have used it to take it apart, too - let the sidepins fall through a hollow follower after they fall in through the cutouts in the back of the core
The real challenge would be to pick it as it would have been set in a door ;)

Quite a lock for being so small. At least the trap pins were visible so it wasn't a big problem to get around them.
My first thought when he went to smack down inner pin 1: "Why is he using a hotdog?"
UK locksmith must play he'll with these locks.
As you start to reassemble, Use a wider piece of shim material (cover the lower third to half of the body) to cover all the pins while using the follower to replace them. As you push the plug back, let the shim material cover the snap ring groove (ride over) which will allow easier insertion.
"You will never pick" Bill, that's the type of short list we need to have!
Great job but I don’t think the cam engaged and so the door would still be locked, making it even more evil! I think a cut down key can be used to overcome this.

I have Picked this Lock 🔐 in the U.K. And it's not that bad and it was in the correct way up too as if it was in a door you just need a very small Neodymium Magnet on the end of your Pick or what ever you can get it to the Pin and after that you are set. Keep up the great work. Nick.
On locks like that with multiple rows of pins, you can use the slot in the end of the brass rod to "select" which one you release by rotating it to line up.

Not sure if this was already noticed or mentioned in the comments, but that magnetic pin was "picked/bumped" by the rapping with the screwdriver handle. Since chamber 5 does have a top spring to keep the magnetic pin from falling too far, I wonder if it could actually work to get lucky "bumping" that pin past the shear line with the lock inverted? Either way, glad I don't have to face those on a lockout service call. Great videos

On the ABS lock, if you try and snap it, there is a mechanism that makes the lock unable to open from the outside, that is if you put it in the right way around. On the magnet, it is not necessarily on a specific pin so if you try and pick it the right way up and stick in a tiny neodymium magnet to circumnavigate the magnetic pin you need to know which pin it's on before hand.
I have this lock on both front and back door, good luck getting passed them.
It's not even a particularly expensive lock in the UK about £35 if you don't want a special .

Now that's a lock that I would trust to secure my house. I'm fairly sure that most houses in the US just use some form of Schlage lock and deadbolt set or Kwikset and those locks, as you've proven time and time again, will take a skilled lockpicker mere minutes to break into

seems like a pretty legit lock... after learning a little about how common locks work, basically the really common ones in the usa are stupid easy to pick or bypass. Like I know very little about picking but have successfully picked masterlocks and kwikset stuff without knowing anything. In fact I had a small black masterlock that I was able to unlock by sticking a small paper clip (unbent, just the way they are made normally) and twisted it, bam it unlocked lol
Getting something like this for my front door, looks like a right PITA
And you had the advantage of both visibility AND gravity doing the work on that magnetic pin.
Maybe next time, you pick one of these, you should turn the follower gap at the end to each pin to gut it not only SPP but also SPG (single pin gutting) ;) - One hell of a complex lock. Nice video!!

Very, very nicely done, if you noticed the kite mark was a "British Standard" one at the bottom, that funny B on its side with the large S in the V, just loved how you analysed this lock after your disassembly, hopefully we can get back to these standards once we leave the EU and give you more challenges .

Indeed Andrew, I told Bill that there was some shenanigans with the key (but didn't go into specifics), and that he should probably pick it upside down (if he didn't bother investigating the lock) for a successful pick. I wanted to give him a fair chance at picking the lock, and gut it. I didn't actually realise it had trap pins, I never saw them move when I used the key, so I assumed they were anti drill pins of sorts. I had this lock on my front door, but replaced the front door recently, and this lock didn't fight right with the new front door (spacing front and back was different). I will however, be ordering another ABS lock for the new door, just haven't got around to it yet.

Andrew Watson are the new 3rd revision avocets any better? i know the first versions were prone to jamming.
Bill you could rotate your plug follower clockwise or counterclockwise to the cutout opening to take out 1 pin or repin the lock 1 pin at a time.
I recon that if that lock was installed in a door, with out knowing what you where up against, I do think that lock would be almost impossible to pick. Great lock!

The random pins on the other side that fell out were most likely anti drill pins as well they looked to be steel. The lock overall claims to have like 16 anti drill pins, so in general you are much better off trying to break the door down than getting through that lock

Yeah I am sure they are anti drill ones, they are probably big to thwart those guys who use large drill bits to drill out the entire core and not just the pins.

Hey bill, you could have rotated the follower so the notch release one pin at a time, same for assembly. Also, the longer than usual video is still nice! And there is always the option to skip forward if someone find it a bit too long.

What got my attention +Bosnianbill was the Kitemark logo on the front of the lock plate. As Wikipedia tells us, The Kitemark is a UK product andservice quality certification mark which is owned and operated by The British Standards Institution (BSI Group). It's been operational since 1903.
I'm impressed. I had no idea the Kitemark was still going, or that the UK still made such great products.
But of course the joke is that these locks are fitted to steel framed plastic doors! Why bother trying to defeat the lock (any lock) on such a door, when all you have to do is kick the lower thin plastic foam lined panel in and crawl through...!
My next front door will be steel framed, but with a reclaimed solid panelled mahogany fire door suspended inside by bolts. And on the outside will be a steel security gate hinged to the ground. Both will have salvaged Ingersol locks if I can get new keys cut for them. If not, I'll be looking at some of these ABS solutions. They aren't that expensive.
I would never get that back together 😂👏 But I couldn’t pick it in my wildest dreams yet anyway so it’s fine. Such a shame I subscribed after he retired, but I have many hours of his videos to work my way through

back in the days of film, I disassembled a Nikon camera I had dropped.
I eventually re-assembled it , and it performed fine.

I picked one of these myself, they are a bit of a nightmare! I never gutted one though, you would have to be mad like that! LPL gutted one of these on camera. I managed to deal with the magnetic with a magnet from an old key.

The 3 keys on the Victorinox knife are a part of the today's UBS AG logo. This was from the former Bankverein, before the merger back in 1998.
The City on the postcard is Basel, view over the river Rhine from west to east with the Birs power plant isle. The Headquarters of Bankverein was in Basel.
So he was Banker not Keymeister ;)
