I ordered Kinross 4ply recently from Scotland since I saw it on another podcast in the most perfect red colour...I actually swatched yesterday and it's beautiful. You should check out Nikki at Knitting with Cat Hair podcast....she has a lot of Marie Wallin content, and is running KAL for a second time. I did a Single Malt for my husband using West Yorkshire Spinners The Croft Aran Tweed....it was lovely to knit with, and looks great. I think I'll use the same yarn for The Gib sweater for myself. I'm also going to knit the Lento as part of the KAL...my colour is so bright, lol...I'll start that next week, as soon as I finish a gift-knit for my grandson.

Hello Vanissia ( that's a beautiful name ) I have just come across your podcast and was interested to see someone just starting on their knitting journey. I was taught to knit in at about 8, we all learnt at school in the 1960's and have been knitting off and on since. I often alternate with sewing, cross stitch, cake decorating card making, or anything creative. I am looking at the sweater you are wearing, which is lovely and I see that you already have very good tension, which is difficult to achieve, so very well done, some people knit for years and never get it as good.

Hello Vanissia, I’m from Germany but originally from Spain, so I share with you the change of countries. You are absolutely right with the fluffy yarns, there are big differences in softness and feeling, even being the same fibers. I appreciate your honest review. Just wanted to tell you some of my experiences with mohair, since I am a little sensitive, too. I’ve tried a lot of mohairs, alpaca subs and other hairy yarns. I find the Isager mohair along with the Knitting for Olive the softest, but Isager being absolutely the most compatible to my skin. Strangely, I have usually problems with some Alpaca yarns, and tolerate better the Suri than the other 100% Alpaca. Excepting the Alpaka Fino from Pascuali, that one is buttery. And fun thing, with Istex I’ve made really good experiences, but Lettlopi is a bit better than Plotulopi. Don’t judge it before washing it with Lanolin, please!😊. I hope that helps you a bit in choosing your yarns!

I really get your frustration about mohair, I find it sooo itchy too. Right now I’m using the drops brushed alpaca for the first time, holding it with unspun, so far so good! Looking forward to more episodes 🎉
Hey!! I can totally understand your struggle with color choice! Have you maybe found out your color type (with color type analysis? It uses your skin tone, hair- and eye color to find out what colors suite you best. If more colder tones are yours or warmer.... maybe this helps. Happy knitting!
Hey! That's really good advice, I definitely want to look into this. The problem with it is I've been told I've got quite a "neutral" complexion so not too warm and not too cold, which makes me more indecisive as there are less "rules" to follow and I'd rather have clear answers aha. But I will look into it more this year for sure

I just started the Vintersol you are wearing. My first real colorwork sweater. Love your’s! Love the green. You gave me more ideas to make already had a few in my que that you want to knit. Like the honeycomb and like you I’m not fond of the knit stitch all over the body, so I have to think about how to alternate. The Christmas ones, I really have to make one. And I’m thinking about joining the KAL.

Hi there, great episode, thank you. Just a bit of insider information. The Wool and Honey is not reverse stocking stitch, it's actually knit a round then purl a round. I made it this year and I had to do a bit of undoing every now and then when I'd realised I'd knit two rows in a row etc.
@@thewoollyworker it ends up looking like garter (which is also how reverse stocking stitch looks), but it's achieved by knitting a row then purling a row, so if you don't like purling, you might find it a hassle. But if you're like me and don't mind purling, then it'll be fine - you just have to keep a track on if you're meant to purl or knit the new round.
I just finished my Semper sweater which I knitted in knitting for Olive in their bottle green 💚 and I love the fit and the fine silk mohair and fine Merino. So soft

That's very true! Still going between going for a "gold" colour, or "rust". I know technically yellow and orange don't go with blondes, but with a name like that "wool and honey" you just have to, aha

I just found your channel and I really like it! A word about the Single Malt… I don’t want to discourage you. Maybe it will turn out great and you’ll have a lot of fun in the process. It’s just…. for me it was quite a desaster 😅🙈 It was supposed to be a Christmas gift for my boyfriend. We looked through patterns endlessly and finally we decided on that one and got the right yarn for it. I measured him several times just to be sure and of course I gauge swatched. However I couldn’t make it fit. I redid the yoke with the raglan four times I guess… then time was running out and I managed to make him a Hanstholm Sweater by PetiteKnit as an alternative in time for Christmas. Fortunately he loves it and wears it nonstop. I thought I’ll give the pattern another try in January but then I did some research and found out that many knitters seem to struggle with fit and/or sizing. When I read a post on that on Lizzys (Hiveknits) Instagram - I decided to repurpose the yarn and get another yarn for a different sweater for my partner. Again - I don’t want to spoil anyone’s fun or joy with a pattern. But as I had quite an unpleasant experience with that particular sweater I wanted to let you know.
Thanks for that! I have heard about the size issues, so I think my expectations are well managed, and I'll take up the challenge. I guess worse comes to worst, I could always use that stitch texture and plug it into a classic raglan design that doesn't have size issues. It is just a bit harder to find "male" patterns. The Hanstholm sweater is definitely a runner up if this one doesnt work out

I absolutely love the Vintersol sweater you're wearing. I probably wouldn't be able to resist the temptation to knit this with light and dark green on the yoke and red on the body, and make it look like a strawberry 😂😂😂 maybe I should do that as a kid sweater for one of the kids in my friends or family

I do like hearing about cardigans. They're less frequently spoken about (I guess because there tends to be a lot of purling :-)) but I find them more versatile than jumpers.
So true, I've only made 1 cardigan so far, but there are many on my list. Just need the motivation to cast one on, as you say, they're so easy to put on

Hi. Just found your channel. I also wanted to knit the shifty sweater but spincycle yarns are way to expensive. I watch the Youngfolk knits podcast and she suggested as an alternative yarn Cascade heritage wave. Which I can get here in the states for about $12.50 per 100g skein.
This was a very enjoyable episode. I am going to join in on the Lento KAL. I will be using Drops Soft Tweed (Cookie Dough) held with Estelle Alpaca Whisper (Caramel). I think it will be fun to be a part of this KAL! I am also planning a Christmas sweater for which I already have the yarn. It is from a 2021 Simply Knitting magazine.

I can't wear mohair either. I can feel all the little pricks on my skin and I have to tear the thing off. And here I am making my own version of the Cargill Cowl in a hot pink mohair. It's probably going to be a gift once it done. But I won't be wearing it. So why did I buy it? Well, I wanted to see if I could actually weat mohair, the black silk core was calling to me, and it was on sale. I have to wear it around my neck in freezing cold weather to see if it's just warm weather that I can't wear it in. I'm rambling a bit. Sorry 😞 You should branch out your colors more. You did it with the Vintersol sweater, and it looks lovely! 😍 Anyway. Sophie has definitely attempted the gambit of all mohair. I don't agree that alpaca can't be a lace weight. Maybe brushed alpaca, that is floofy isn't lace. BUT Holst has very affordable and gorgeous alpaca lace weight, that is definitely a true lace weight. So does KnitPicks. I prefer alpaca over mohair. Feels a lot better next to the skin.

@@thewoollyworker yes, it is Titicaca. It's a great lace weight alternative to mohair. I've never tried Isager, though. It's not as available here in the States. Nor Sandnes Garn.
On your wool and honey sweater the only thing I’d be worried about is that Kinross 4 ply looks like a worsted spun yarn which tends to have more drape and be a bit heavier than a woolen spun yarn knit at the same gauge, and I think the Brooklyn Tweed Loft is woolen spun. With it being garter stitch, I would think a lofty yarn would be preferable so that the sweater doesn’t stretch out from its own weight. Just something to consider! Another great episode!

On the topic of hand dyed yarns + mohair or alpaka fluff - I saw a video once (please don't ask me whose) where the lady said if you want to tame the variegated yarn, it's better to have the variegated yarn as a base and combine it with a solid colour mohair, whereas if you want the colour changes to really shine, it's better to have a solid colour base and variegated mohair.

Thank you! And I saw a lot of people recommending Schoppel-Wolle Edition 3 for example, but I haven't had a proper look yet. Definitely check ravelry project pages for all "shift-related" patterns, there are some nice examples of colour combos!
I bought the Schoppel Crazy and it’s a wonderful replacement for the Spincycle. I can highly recommend it for the Shifty. Try to find a physical shop to buy it, though, to really be able to see how all the CCs and the MC fit together.

Hey, thanks! I bought some isager at BeInspiredFibers in Edinburgh, they had the colourway sand there, but online, I can get it from Tribe, or Loop. They are often out of stock of the popular colours but you can sign up for alerts i think

I understand! I feel slipovers are better for sure, especially v necks, as it doesn't come so close to your neck. I haven't tried in socks but heard good things as it adds structure and stability. Have you tried a thin strand of alpaca, or brushed alpaca instead?
Wooly, I'm a new knitter at the age of 71, but guess what..it is never to late to learn something new. I am working and I mean working on my first sweater. I have part of the back and right front done. I even have cables in it. My problem is I never know, when reading a pattern, how do I determine how to figure out which side the pattern is telling me to work right front or left front. Is it my right or left or like when I put it on. I have guessed on my sweater. Pray I have it correct (smile). Hope to chat again and if anyone can help..give me a shout. Ms. Hurt

I just started the Vintersol you are wearing. My first real colorwork sweater. Love your’s! Love the green. You gave me more ideas to make already had a few in my que that you want to knit. Like the honeycomb and like you I’m not fond of the knit stitch all over the body, so I have to think about how to alternate. The Christmas ones, I really have to make one. And I’m thinking about joining the KAL.

Just a bit of insider information. The Wool and Honey is not reverse stocking stitch, it's actually knit a round then purl a round. I made it this year and I had to do a bit of undoing every now and then when I'd realised I'd knit two rows in a row etc.

@@thewoollyworker it ends up looking like garter (which is also how reverse stocking stitch looks), but it's achieved by knitting a row then purling a row, so if you don't like purling, you might find it a hassle. But if you're like me and don't mind purling, then it'll be fine - you just have to keep a track on if you're meant to purl or knit the new round.
I just finished my Semper sweater which I knitted in knitting for Olive in their bottle green 💚 and I love the fit and the fine silk mohair and fine Merino. So soft

That's very true! Still going between going for a "gold" colour, or "rust". I know technically yellow and orange don't go with blondes, but with a name like that "wool and honey" you just have to, aha

The Nordiska for my self and the blizzard for my mum. And i have the yarn for the birkin sweater for my self and 1000 plans for other sweaters of course. But i started knitting in june😅

I just found your channel and I really like it! A word about the Single Malt… I don’t want to discourage you. Maybe it will turn out great and you’ll have a lot of fun in the process. It’s just…. for me it was quite a desaster 😅🙈 It was supposed to be a Christmas gift for my boyfriend. We looked through patterns endlessly and finally we decided on that one and got the right yarn for it. I measured him several times just to be sure and of course I gauge swatched. However I couldn’t make it fit. I redid the yoke with the raglan four times I guess… then time was running out and I managed to make him a Hanstholm Sweater by PetiteKnit as an alternative in time for Christmas. Fortunately he loves it and wears it nonstop.
I thought I’ll give the pattern another try in January but then I did some research and found out that many knitters seem to struggle with fit and/or sizing. When I read a post on that on Lizzys (Hiveknits) Instagram - I decided to repurpose the yarn and get another yarn for a different sweater for my partner.
Again - I don’t want to spoil anyone’s fun or joy with a pattern. But as I had quite an unpleasant experience with that particular sweater I wanted to let you know.
Thanks for that! I have heard about the size issues, so I think my expectations are well managed, and I'll take up the challenge. I guess worse comes to worst, I could always use that stitch texture and plug it into a classic raglan design that doesn't have size issues. It is just a bit harder to find "male" patterns. The Hanstholm sweater is definitely a runner up if this one doesnt work out

I absolutely love the Vintersol sweater you're wearing. I probably wouldn't be able to resist the temptation to knit this with light and dark green on the yoke and red on the body, and make it look like a strawberry 😂😂😂 maybe I should do that as a kid sweater for one of the kids in my friends or family

I do like hearing about cardigans. They're less frequently spoken about (I guess because there tends to be a lot of purling :-)) but I find them more versatile than jumpers.
So true, I've only made 1 cardigan so far, but there are many on my list. Just need the motivation to cast one on, as you say, they're so easy to put on

Hi. Just found your channel. I also wanted to knit the shifty sweater but spincycle yarns are way to expensive. I watch the Youngfolk knits podcast and she suggested as an alternative yarn Cascade heritage wave. Which I can get here in the states for about $12.50 per 100g skein.

This was a very enjoyable episode. I am going to join in on the Lento KAL. I will be using Drops Soft Tweed (Cookie Dough) held with Estelle Alpaca Whisper (Caramel). I think it will be fun to be a part of this KAL! I am also planning a Christmas sweater for which I already have the yarn. It is from a 2021 Simply Knitting magazine.

I can't wear mohair either. I can feel all the little pricks on my skin and I have to tear the thing off. And here I am making my own version of the Cargill Cowl in a hot pink mohair. It's probably going to be a gift once it done. But I won't be wearing it. So why did I buy it? Well, I wanted to see if I could actually weat mohair, the black silk core was calling to me, and it was on sale. I have to wear it around my neck in freezing cold weather to see if it's just warm weather that I can't wear it in. I'm rambling a bit. Sorry 😞
You should branch out your colors more. You did it with the Vintersol sweater, and it looks lovely! 😍
Anyway. Sophie has definitely attempted the gambit of all mohair. I don't agree that alpaca can't be a lace weight. Maybe brushed alpaca, that is floofy isn't lace. BUT Holst has very affordable and gorgeous alpaca lace weight, that is definitely a true lace weight. So does KnitPicks. I prefer alpaca over mohair. Feels a lot better next to the skin.

@@thewoollyworker yes, it is Titicaca. It's a great lace weight alternative to mohair. I've never tried Isager, though. It's not as available here in the States. Nor Sandnes Garn.
On your wool and honey sweater the only thing I’d be worried about is that Kinross 4 ply looks like a worsted spun yarn which tends to have more drape and be a bit heavier than a woolen spun yarn knit at the same gauge, and I think the Brooklyn Tweed Loft is woolen spun. With it being garter stitch, I would think a lofty yarn would be preferable so that the sweater doesn’t stretch out from its own weight. Just something to consider! Another great episode!

On the topic of hand dyed yarns + mohair or alpaka fluff - I saw a video once (please don't ask me whose) where the lady said if you want to tame the variegated yarn, it's better to have the variegated yarn as a base and combine it with a solid colour mohair, whereas if you want the colour changes to really shine, it's better to have a solid colour base and variegated mohair.

Thank you! And I saw a lot of people recommending Schoppel-Wolle Edition 3 for example, but I haven't had a proper look yet. Definitely check ravelry project pages for all "shift-related" patterns, there are some nice examples of colour combos!
I bought the Schoppel Crazy and it’s a wonderful replacement for the Spincycle. I can highly recommend it for the Shifty. Try to find a physical shop to buy it, though, to really be able to see how all the CCs and the MC fit together.

Hey, thanks! I bought some isager at BeInspiredFibers in Edinburgh, they had the colourway sand there, but online, I can get it from Tribe, or Loop. They are often out of stock of the popular colours but you can sign up for alerts i think

I find all mohair crazy itchy. Even the supposedly soft ones. Isn't that annoying. OK in slipovers though. Maybe in socks too?
I understand! I feel slipovers are better for sure, especially v necks, as it doesn't come so close to your neck. I haven't tried in socks but heard good things as it adds structure and stability. Have you tried a thin strand of alpaca, or brushed alpaca instead?
Wooly, I'm a new knitter at the age of 71, but guess what..it is never to late to learn something new. I am working and I mean working on my first sweater. I have part of the back and right front done. I even have cables in it. My problem is I never know, when reading a pattern, how do I determine how to figure out which side the pattern is telling me to work right front or left front. Is it my right or left or like when I put it on. I have guessed on my sweater. Pray I have it correct (smile). Hope to chat again and if anyone can help..give me a shout. Ms. Hurt

Please do NOT knit a sweater with Istex yarn if you find MOHAIR prickly! Lettlopi and Plotulopi are way more itchy. Wonderfully warm, but prickly.
