      It's all good! Once I got over the heartbreak of losing a precious skein of Spincycle yarn, I just laughed at the ridiculousness of what happened 🤣 Such a rookie error of not checking the fibre composition beforehand

    So, about two weeks ago I shrank an all over cabled dk weight sweater. I started it in September and finished it just before Christmas. It took a few more weeks to sew it all together. I was very happy with the fit and overall beauty of garment. I soaked it, then put it into my washer just for a spin. This is something I have done quite a few times before. 1 hour later I went to get it out and the washer was just aimlessly sloshing it around and not spinning it. For some reason it was out of balance and never began spinning. The result was a wadded ball of felted cables, not as small as yours, but totally ruined. I mean horror show does not describe the situation. I'm so glad you shared!

    • @acornknits
      @acornknits  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no, that's heartbreaking!! 😭💔 After all the months of time, energy, money and love that went into creating an all-over cabled sweater, for it to get felted because of a washing machine malfunction would have been absolutely crushing. I'm so sorry to hear that. Will you consider re-knitting the pattern or is it too tainted from that awful experience?

    So many beautiful knitted things! I was so excited when I woke up and saw that you uploaded a new video :) Great one! I'm really impressed by the shawls you knitted, they look really amazing. And so many gift knits, I always want to keep the sweaters I knit haha so I basically always only gift knitted socks (with a few exceptions). I still have 2 skeins of knitting for olive pure silk in my stash and I never knew what to knit with them, but after seeing your modified version of the camisole no 2 I think I might try that, your shaping looks really great! Here's to another year full of lovely knits :)

    Lovely Video and very nice to see you again! 🥰 I love these yearly recaps and I think it's really interesting how many different kinds of patterns, techniques and yarns you used throughout the year. Btw, the setesdal sweater you made for your father stuck with me so much that last month I finally decided to use the setesdal sweater to try my first colorwork 🙈 your video about the steeking process definitely helped with losing a bit of the fear of cutting into my knits but first I'll need to finish knitting the pieces before I attempt steeking 😅 But thank you in advance for your "tutorial" as well as your tutorial recommendations 🤗
    Also, I'm heartbroken about your stone crop cardigan and I think it's really amazing how calm you are about it 👏🏼

      So lovely to see you pop up in the comments! 💞 Awwwh thank you. I really enjoy experimenting and trying new things. That's what I love about gift knitting, because it gives you the opportunity to try something that might be totally different to your own style or taste.
      Yay! That's amazing that you're doing your first colourwork with the setesdal sweater - I think you'll have a lot of fun with it 🥰 The Rauma Finull was so lovely to work with, I'd highly recommend it.
      Haha it was such a shock and so ridiculous that you just have to laugh 😂 I think the fact that I wasn't happy with the fit made it easier to not be so upset about the cardigan being ruined.

    Oh the stonecrop makes me sad every time I see it! It reminds me of how devastated I was for you when we saw it in person all felted 🥺 I adore the Fable Knitwear dress and my goodness does that shaping look spectacular!!
    Really keen to get more thoughts from you on that "vegan" yarn for summer... I hate the idea of summer tops because I hate the hand feel of linen and cotton.....
    Your makes are gorgeous! So glad you're back!

    • @acornknits
      @acornknits  ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't feel bad about the Stonecrop - you win some, you lose some. But I'll definitely never be that cavalier with putting knitwear in the washing machine ever again, that's for sure 😂 Isn't it stunning?? She's such a knitwear wizard, all her Fabel Knitwear patterns are so unbelievably beautiful.
      I think the Hikoo CoBaSi is a fantastic option for summer knits, I'd highly recommend! I'm the same as you, I generally don't like knitting with pure cotton or linen because I find them too harsh on my hands and in most cases I don't love the finished fabric. I will say that the way CoBaSi has been plied in a way that makes the yarn look a bit cheap/poor-quality. But once it's knitted up, it looks great and is breathable enough to wear in hot weather while still maintaining the elasticity and memory of wool.

    I almost bawled when I saw your shrunk stonecrop. I knit that one a year or 2 ago and I remember it being a real labor of love. Dear God, I can't imagine if I'd shrunk it.
    I want to say:
    I did the very same thing with a sweater I knit in my early knitting days... I shrunk a beautiful sweater to baby size
    But I aggressively stretched it while it was still damp, i re soaked it and used all my brute strength and stretchhhhhed and alas,I got it back to adult size and I now wear it often!
    It was a miracle but it was possible!
    Now then, about the fit of stonexrop:
    I've noticed the same pertinent with several of Andrea Mowry's designs, and I do think it is just a too-deep yoke, mostly. I try to keep my yoke around 8 inches before separating the sleeves and although that might not be YOUR best measurement, it is smart for you to figure our how deep you need to keep your yokes.
    Best to you!

    • @acornknits
      @acornknits  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's incredible! I can't believe you were able to re-stretch a garment back to it's regular size after it had been shrunken down to fit a baby 😲 What witchcraft did you use?! 😂 Seriously though, what an amazing outcome.
      Thank you for sharing! A few other knitters have commented on this video along the same lines, so it's very reassuring to know that we're not alone and the overly-deep yoke is a theme in Andrea Mowry's patterns. That's a fantastic tip about learning the right yoke depth for your own measurements and making sure not to knit beyond that when separating for the sleeves, I'll definitely pay close attention to that next time I knit a round yoke sweater✨💖🧶

    Thank you for your insights and sharing your experiences! :) I've been knitting for around a decade, but I still overestimated my skills when I decided to take on the Priscilla cardigan. I bought the pattern on Ravelry and the charts are still separated and a smidgen confusing. 😅 I love the end product and I bought myself some luscious yarn for it specifically, so I'm still trying to complete the project. I've started and unraveled and restarted a few times, but I'm just re-writing the pattern to something that makes better sense to me. (Instead of piecing the separate charts together for each row.) Happy knitting! 😊

      I think the Priscilla cardigan is one of those patterns where the designer is a very creative person and their approach to knitting is highly intuitive, it's such an inspiration! But it can be difficult to follow if you are more of a methodical knitter (like me!). I agree that it's such a beautiful end product so I encourage you to keep trying! 🥰 If you'd like to chat about re-writing the pattern to make it more understandable for your knitting style, please let me know because I did exactly that and I found it sooo much easier to follow 🧶💃💐

    Ah that felted stonecrop!! If that happened to me, I would frame it for sure, both as a reminder for myself and as a warning for other sweaters if they feel like growing two sizes on me (after crying a bit). So many beautiful pieces-the Priscilla cardigan?!? 🙊🙈

      After everything that cardigan has been through, from stretching way out and then shrinking to almost nothing, it deserves to be framed...maybe with a little cautionary plaque written beneath it 🤣

    That brown dress is everything, OMG beautiful ...can you share briefly the technique you used to achieve the hourglass shaping on the sides. I think that is what makes this dress so beautiful . You say the shaping is in the pattern?

    • @acornknits
      @acornknits  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much!
      For the shaping, I did a combination of waist and hip shaping (which is essentially just a series of decreases followed by increases). Since the dress is a top-down construction, once I had knit up to the full bust, I started to decrease by doing 'ssk, k1, k2tog' at either side of the dress at the underarms (so 4 stitches were decreased). I did this every 4 rounds - but that's quite dramatic decreases, usually you might do this every 6-8 rounds or so - and continued until I reached my natural waist. Then I started to increase at the same rate by doing 'M1R, k1, M1L' at the 2 x side markers (so 4 stitches were increased) - I then did this until I had reached the original stitch count from the full bust.
      It's a basic recipe that can be adapted for different body shapes - for instance, someone who has a larger hip measurement then their full bust may want to do more increases over their hips for a better fit.
      I hope this helps?

    If you commute 3 hours a day like me, stockinette in the round is exactly what you need. The way I knit sweaters is I knit colorwork/lace/cables at home where I can fokus on it and don't get board. Then, all stockinette portions are knit during 3 hours of commute on the bus (it gets finished really fast). I would probably also be bored of stockinette if I knitted it at home (unless there is a good TV show to watch while doing it).

    • @acornknits
      @acornknits  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree, stockinette on long commutes is a match made in heaven! 3 hours of travel is a HUGE big chunk of your day but I'm glad to hear that you can make the most of it with knitting 🥰 My commute to work is much shorter but I always try to fit in as much knitting as possible. I was knitting my Priscilla cardigan on my way to work but it was a bit of a mission with my work bag on one side, my project bag on the other and a printed version of the lace chart balanced in between - all on one bus seat 😂

      Exactly! I love all my finished products but the process of knitting is what I'm smitten by. So, even though it was still a little disappointing, I wasn't too heartbroken because I enjoyed the journey and experience so much 🐱💞

    My stonecrop cardigan had the same fit problem and at the time I was thinking it might be because of my shoulder chest proportions but to me it looks like your proportion are ideal and still. That bubbling also is a recurring one with Andrea Mowry yokes as well as the deep armhole which I think is intentional but does not work at all in my opinion. I do think the visual of the design is great and I would knit it again but the yoke would need to completely re-calculated

    • @acornknits
      @acornknits  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry to hear that you had the same experience with the Stonecrop fitting poorly but I'm also relieved to hear that I'm not alone! I think you're completely right that it's an intentional design choice which maybe works well for oversized or drop-shoulder garments but doesn't translate well into other designs. I agree, I love the visual design and would be very keen to knit another one but I'll definitely need to make some significant adjustments to the yoke.

    RE: Knit Front Back purpl bump. This is correct. But you may want to look at the Very Pink Knits video called "Alternative to Knit Front Back (KFB) Increase". This eliminates the purl bump by slipping rather than knitting the back. You'll see :)

    Did you felt the edges that you steeked?

    • @acornknits
      @acornknits  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, I was just able to cut straight through without any unraveling. I used my sewing machine to reinforce either side of the stitches but they held themselves together so well, I easily could have skipped that step and it would've been fine. That's what I love about using natural, non-superwash wool 💞

  • @karencooper1978
    @karencooper1978 ปีที่แล้ว

    After knitting with superwash a couple of times, I decided that I’ll never knit with superwash again. It loses its’ structure and grows. Sorry about your cardigan - could it be that the shoulders were a little snug making it pull up? Great podcast!

    • @acornknits
      @acornknits  ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely agree! I love the structure and elasticity that comes from natural, non-superwash wool (not to mention the feel and smell). I understand the reasons why some people love superwash wool but it's just not for me.
      I think the fit issue was definitely the result of the yoke being too deep but may have been made worse by the shoulders being too snug as well. Another viewer said that they had the exact same issue with their Stonecrop Cardigan so it seems like it's an intentional design feature that unfortunately doesn't work for some people 😔

    • @acornknits
      @acornknits  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm so sorry, the pattern hasn't been released yet 😭 However, from looking at other designs by Fabel Knitwear, I think you could get a very similar garment if you adapted the Norma Jean Turtleneck pattern - swap the 2x2 rib collar for 1x1 twisted rib and extend the body of the sweater to a dress length. You could also add in waist shaping like I did, or just leave it out for simplicity (most of the other testers who knit this dress didn't bother with waist shaping). I hope that helps!
