    Pro tip! The Norwegian krone is quite weak at the moment so if you get yarns in Oslo it's almost like an extra discount due to the currency

    I had a similar experience in college in engineering! I think the ratio was similar and now that I'm working in the field the male:female ratio is even worse (I'm the only girl on my team). It's really cool to see someone in the engineering field with similar hobbies.

    • @neknits
      @neknits  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yay! I also love hearing of other engineer-knitters who are women. I think we have a special bond from our shared experiences!!

    *If* the salvage edge is too loose to comfortably sew your zipper to, you can buy something called "Seam stabilizer" or "seam tape" and stitch it to the knitted portion first. It's used (mostly in knits, like for sewing) because some of them can be so drapey and not have a lot of integrity.

    • @neknits
      @neknits  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll keep that in mind, thank you!

    Cool work trip. This past February I went to England and did so much yarn shopping. I wanted to take only 1 carry on suitcase. I packed very strategically. I brought clothes that I did not really love anymore. I had a washer available so I washed and donated the clothes and freed up so much space for my yarn.

    For metal needles and airport scanners, I've heard that if you unscrew the tips from the cable of your work and put the tips into your purse / laptop bag, they look like pens on the scanner and are not confiscated. Have not been brave enough to try that on an international flight 😅. Great podcast episode, thank you for creating it.

    Welcome to Europe, Amy! I can 100% recommend a trip to Wollen Berlin when you are in Berlin. They have a wonderful selection, are the cutest yarn shop located in the back building of a historic factory district- so very cool flair. The staff speak excellent English and are SO kind and helpful! They have nearly all the yarns you mentioned except Drops and Gepard. Both of these I always order online. Drops I can recommend Belle as a lovely cotton linen viscose blend and Drops Alpaca, very soft with nice stitch definition. Wollen Berlin does have a selection of locally dyed yarn (though often sold out), you should ask them about it while there! Also, a yarn they have recently stocked which I think is also not so readily available in the US is Holst Garn, Coast, a cotton merino blend which I love and its a very good price for high quality! You’ve definitely convinced me to try Ficolana, thank you for the recommendation! Love, love your zipper sweater. That black color looks so elegant and cozy on you: perfect! If you make it to Wollen in the morning, I can also recommend Oeuf which is right up at the end of the street on a little square. Very delicious breakfast/ brunch (cause yarn shopping always makes me hungry 😊). Hope you have a great time!!

    So fun that you are going to Norway Oslo. Yarn stores to recommend in Oslo is FruKvist, Garntopia, Husfliden, Pickles (Norwegian yarn brand) and Strikkefeber (lokal hand dyed yarn, and open on Sundays). Som other Norwegian brand to test is Hilleavaag and Rauma. Love from a Norwegian knitting podcaster 🥰

    • @addiekl
      @addiekl ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely, I second that recommendation. I've visited Prague twice and it's a fantastic city. Prague has a lot of expats so it's not hard to find people who speak English either. I'm not sure about the selection of yarn stores currently but it's worth visiting anyway.

    Amy, you look lovely in dark colors! It brings out a lovely warm glow in your skin. The tonal charcoal colors of the zipper sweater are especially gorgeous with your complexion ☺️ This was so nice to tune into - I hope we get more Q+A segments in the future!

    For a slipped stitch edge I've actually found that it ends up neater/less loose when you slip the last stitch of the row (knitting the first stitch normally) rather than slipping the first stitch of the row and knitting/purling to the end. YMMV though

    Welcome to Poland Amy! Fellow knitter living the expat life in Warsaw here 👋🏽👋🏽 if you want to try Drops, I think there is a sale going on and many polish online stores carry the brand. Is usually the way I get my yarn fix since the selection is way better than physical stores. Have fun and enjoy Poland 🇵🇱

    I enjoy your podcast Amy! Your current WIP is looking really beautiful, warm and cozy. I know you're not typically a vlogger but it would be fun to see some of the yarn shops you visit, even if it's just a little view from the outside and around the inside of the shops, just to get a sense of what the different shops looks like, and the selection of yarns they carry. I'm interested in hearing about local yarns you find (whether you purchase those yarns or not) that we in the US might not know about. Thanks for sharing!

    Fun to see you podcast from my continent! I enjoy working with Drops yarn; they are affordable and good quality! I love Drops Belle for summer garments, Drops Merino Extra Fine and the kid silk mohair. The mohair is super soft.
    When I was in Germany a couple of months ago, I bought a skein of hand dyed yarn which base was Schulana Sensitiva. It’s the softest merino I’ve had so far.
    Have fun on your trip and I’m looking forward to see the yarn you’re buying:)

    If you can squeeze in a weekend trip to Copenhagen, tante grøn has a brand called Nordic yarn lab which you can’t get anywhere else or shipped to the us and it’s soooo beautiful. Uldstedet is owned by the same person who own Gepard so they have a ton of it and it’s sort of a flagship store. And of course KFO is in Copenhagen too, plus so much more!!

    Re your (calm, sane) explanation at 36:00 -- it makes sense, and we all need to be a bit more grateful that there is security on watch. Most of those workers won't have made the Ranunculus yet, so, let's look at it from their point of view. Also consider that with a long enough, thin enough cable attached to those needles, it has garrote capability. Lethal.
