Drum Pads + MPC is as fun as i thought! // MPC 3000 House Music

  • I've always wanted to try using some sort of Drum Pad machine with an MPC to allow me to get funkier and finer control over my dynamics. I finally bit the bullet and bought the Nord Drum 3p after watching @Red Means Recording video using it, thanks Jeremy.. Wow! Why haven't i done this sooner? Its so fun to get creative rhythms especially with unquantized recording on the MPC.

Sam sidique - Say you have 4 outputs on your drum machine. You assign your kick to output on channel 1, snare to channel 2, hi hat to channel 3 and perc to channel 4. Your sound card will need at least four inputs. Connect the outputs of the drum machine to the inputs of the card. Inside your DAW, you open up audio tracks and assign their inputs. Eg input 1 - which would be connected to output 1 of the drum machine - the kick. Continue this for the rest. I would name each channel eg kick, snare, hi hat, perc. Then save template. Hope that helps - one of my favorite students I teach is called Sidique so I responded the best I could

Dope vid Ricky! Pretty similar to my usual set-up: I use an old Roland SPDS to perform my drums + Nord Virtual Drum Synth to create drum sounds with my MPC Ren. I have used the SPDS in my live set-up (while I play bass guitar thru synths) to either trigger samples or play drums on the pads as the larger surface area makes it easier to actually hit live than pads on a MPC, particularly while doing other things performance wise. It also really helps humanize your midi drums when you have a performance based drum pad to input them into a sequencer. Also love using a HPD-15 sometimes to input, pads have very good touch sensitivity settings for playing by hand.

Saw the video by Jeremy and then this and I was like hmm that looks way more fun than just programming in beats! Found one going super cheap second hand in near mint condition and snapped it up (though I’m supposed to be saving for a new computer because my laptops integrated gpu burnt out!) Hah, you guys inspire me every time! Looked around for vids trying to get my around midi routing capabilities but you and Jeremy kill it every time :) might try routing it with a fader fox for parameter changes? But love the way you can play the sequence in and keep it looping and alter the sound! Sounds like your laptop is thermo throttling, I think someone mentioned it could be your gpu powering the screen, sounds about right. I had the same problem with my 2011 MacBook Pro before it died. Took it apart and cooked the gpu in the oven which brought it back to life for a little while, but then died again. Since you run most samples on hardware and don’t use many vst plugins I wouldn’t be surprised if your having a similar issue.

It can be an tedious process using the menus/display of the S but that sound is SO worth. It would probably feel super natural to trigger it w the spd (as im a drummer) and record it str8 into the daw. I'd love an MPC 3000 like yours, it really is in nearly perfect condition but I'll just keep dreaming w my beatstep mk 1 and s3200 combo lol. Nice tune btw, those old sampler vibes go so hard.

Mmmmm. That thing is so good. I recently just bought the mood pedal from chase bliss. Goes so nice with a lot of synths. Almost wonder how it would work with drum pads.
Also your fan will fire up no matter what because of how much cpu daws need. So the fan automatically goes up. You can buy fanless but they are risky. Its why it would almost be better using a liquid cooled desktop for videos. Considering live you aren’t gonna hear the fan at all.
I notice FL and Ableton both do this but pro tools wouldn’t do it to my friends macbook. I personally use a windows VM to run FL and its randomly works better than a normal version of the OS.
    Idk computers are temperamental lol.
