    Dude. Spare us the excuses about your rambling. Most of us come here FOR your heady talks about your journey in music. I personally love it. Feels good to know your struggles and ideas. And although 99% of your viewers are on a different page (setup wise), it's still SO inspiring. KEEP. IT. UP.

    That “commit to audio” literally explained to me why I fell in love with my MPC. I’d spend WAY too long trying out different sounds and plugins etc to find a sound I liked before working on a track, since I’ve started using my MPC I’ve been more efficient, quicker and I LOVE my music more than ever before. Great video as per.

    Robert Deniro has some line about how he feels like he's been faking it and in over his head his acting career. I feel like you've hit the nail on the head Ricky, it's about trusting your heart to lead you towards a setup and approach that's exciting and right for you, it's normal to feel in over your head. People need to stop worrying about comparing themselves to the people on instagram and youtube.

      PS.: "Mental Bandwidth" - John Coltrane used a similar expression during sessions, regarding distractive tasks - it's not weird, it is much likely more important now than in the 60's. I think you are very much on the right track. Again, props.

  • @marantz1

    I also love your point about committing things to audio. Too often I'm a coward and don't want to do that.... I need to be braver with my decisions.

  • @synthmage00
    @synthmage00 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    "If something's on a preset or whatever [...] next thing you know, you completely destroyed the patch and you're working on a whole other song, so if I can just commit something to audio, cool. That's it. That's what I've gotta work with. Let's move on to the next thing and keep it going."
    I literally lost two years of my musical life trying to produce entirely ITB for this exact reason, *even knowing about this pitfall going into it*. The single best thing that I did for my productivity was putting a real modular on my desk and tracking it, instead of spending hours tweaking every single tiny thing in Bazille or VCV. There's still almost no limitation to the actual sounds I can make, but having to _commit_ to an idea and move on is such a big deal.

    22:30 is such a good point! Thanks for that.
    I think everyone eventually realizes . No one cares where you got your 909 samples or if you just threw some Ableton groove on those hi hats instead of actually sequencing on hardware... All That Matters - 1. You had fun making it.. 2. It sounds good
    Just make it sing, man!!
    Doing all the old school stuff and vinyl sampling is GREAT but doesn’t translate into Great music, neccisarrily. Just fun for learning and appreciating the tech.
    For me a Tr-08 and Ju-06 running audio through usb into Ableton is all I need at the moment.
    Drum machine, synth, recording device...

    the MPC makes you think in a different way which is why it makes it special. Keeping things simple and groovy. I feel like it's based on how you imagine your track and making it happen FAST. I usually "hum" the beat and then proceed to record immediately, which feels very natural and intuitive. 100% you can never get the same sound using a DAW whether it's swing or sound.

  • @gillescafedjian1381

    I understand you so much. I bought a Digitakt as my first "expensive" gear and serious motivation to make music because of your review video more than 1 year ago. Since then, I play with it as soon as I have time. I have the same love feeling as you describe for your MPC. I know everything about the DT and really enjoy using only it since all this time. But recently, I finally made a big step and added a synth (Vermona PERfourMER) and a DAW (studio one). I think it's the perfect setup : A sampler, A synth, and a DAW.
    Thank you for your videos your sincerity is welcome.

    Damn, had a crazy dream last night. Me and a friend were at a synthesizer/electronics store and you were working the counter. You told us it was probably chill for us to just take some laptops and leave without paying, which we did, in an extremely awkward fashion. Once we got out into the streets and realized no one was pursuing us, we both felt really bad about potentially putting your job in jeopardy. In short, woke up feeling really relieved that I didnt actually rip you off. Also nice videos ive been learning some good stuff from em.

    Great conversation man,I have been going thru the same dilemma in regards to Dj technology,until I purchased the RANE TWELVE DJ CONTROLLERS with the LARGE platters as opposed to the SMALL diameter jog wheel. I lost my “mojo” and got it back. SAME THING HAPPENED WITH MY RECORDING STUDIO. I LOVE PROTOOLS BUT HATED TRYING TO CREATE AND ARRANGE IN IT. I WENT BACK TO THE AKAI MPC ENVIRONMENT & PURCHASED THEIR LATEST MPCX. I NOW AVERAGE MAKING AND COMPLETING 2 SONGS EVERY 3 DAYS! I STILL TRACK THE ARRANGEMENT TO PROTOOLS BUT NOW USE LESS PLUGINS IN THE MIX PHASE. I SO RELATE TO WHAT YOU CONVERSED ABOUT IN THIS VIDEO..ALSO YOUR TRACK SOUNDED EXCELLENT..THANK YOU,AND GOD BLESS.

    The thing i love the most about working on my MPC-60II and 2000xl is not seeing the sequence running visually, - something about looking at a DAW screen affects the way i hear, and feel the sound and groove...The MPC just puts me in a better head space, - also the limitations are just right...

    • @mikedelicus
      @mikedelicus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I fully agree. I'm quickly overwhelmed by the endless possibilities of DAWs, but an old school MPC keeps me always focusing on the composition part. I have a MPC 5000 and I'm always wondering why this machine isn't a classic as the built-in synthesizer with nearly endless multitimbrality is a wonderful upgrade.

    great video...so relevant to me right now. I just recently added a couple basic things to my set-up (which is way moRe simplistic than what you have!!)...and then taking a little time to set up a easy and consistent file management work flow and it is like POW! all these cables and instruments that seemed strewn about before (I was tripping over stuff, feeling tangled, spending as much time trying to find things and remember what I was doing as I was experimenting) suddenly turned into this creative ecosystem that made sense to me and I can make something or play with an idea really quickly and it is a beautiful thing! Almost makes me feel like I can make something that is interesting to me "too quickly"...I have to force myself to be objective about outcomes and not associate how long it took with how "good" it is. The first part of this video that you suggested skipping was the part that I connected with the most!! It is cool because it isn't about equipment it is definitely all about the FEELS!

  • @256k_

    Seriously, everything you said in the begining about the MPC 3000 i totally am going through the same thing for me. i bought an MPC 2500 maybe a couple of months ago and this was my first time ever owning or using an MPC and discovering the workflow on it for the first time. other people i know who have it always rave about it and at first i was really disapointed because i felt like it was so cumbersome and so many friction points nad so many limitations. i kept trying to force myself to use it and everytime i would i get get fed up and go to ableton instead coz i know i could work quick on it. but because of the golbal circumstances i told myself no more gear buying/selling. this is what you have and you have to learn how to use it.
    the other day i was using it and it finally clicked. i chuned out a dope track that i'm very proud of and i realized how "simple" it was but then again how awesome it was and the beauty of this is because of the MPC.. wehen you wanna do something more "complex" you REALLY have to think about it and how you can do that and even if it's worth bothering to do it and often times i say meh. let's leave this like that and in the end it ends up being better than if i had all the tools and shortcuts to do what i think of doing.
    i understand now. and i'm never going to get rid of the MPC now, this is my main music making machine now.

    • @256k_
      @256k_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      sad update: i sold the 2500... it happened at a time where i was purging a lot of my gear for various reasons. i really regret selling it now especially considering how much they cost now to buy used if even you can find one.
      I ended up getting a MPC ONE recently which i do quite like. I was weary about the modern MPC-OS thinking it lost the MPC soul and just turned into another daw, but honestly while modern OS is quite vast and open and you can do a loooot more, it still kept the MPC core workflow as far as i can tell. between JJOS and modern software there's actually a surprising amount of overlap, while of course the modern one being wayyy more polished. definitely happy with the MPC one......having said that..........
      I found a really really good deal on a old busted up 1000 that i'm planning on refurbishing and adding an internal battery to make it portable. something about the simplicity of that LCD screen makes me way more focused on the task at hand.
      I still wish i could get my 2500 back. :(

    Agree on simplicity, for me MPC-X is the centrepiece I ended up using, for same benefits shown in this video plus searching for samples and even a large splice library is easier I think with the search function. Organising or looking for samples on MPC 1000 was always least fun part, so it feels a bit more streamlined. Syncing with Ableton is easy too.

      @@RickyTinez ....yes sir having daws and unlimited software and sampling time plus premade loops made me very lazy , uninspired, and less creative but with my mpc 60 I've learned the bass guitar , live drums and stepped up my vinyl diggin because when your diggin for old vinyl you are hearing music that was from a different era you may not sample it , but you can sit back and enjoy and appreciate it it's very inspiring

    I just spent like an hour on my MPC1000 today, no external synths, nothing but me and my samples, and like you said, I could ditch everything but a *good sampler* and be fine.
    However while I found out that it was fun and efficient to lay out everything in the MPC, going back and syncing some synths for that live interaction can be worth it. For instance my bass was a PEAK sample from one of my patches. I set it to play the real PEAK patch instead and jammed for another hour, making the sound evolve as I played the other parts. That way you can improve on some samples with a very lively sound.

    Wow, I love every single video you have made, but this is the best one yet. I have been writing almost entirely in the box the past two weeks and I have felt very guilty about all these expensive boxes surrounding me collecting dust. I had to get real with myself and get over my own prejudices. The truth of the matter is getting all those boxes to sync up can become an almost endless distraction, and I don't even know if they sound better. Thank you so much Ricky for getting to the core of the matter, the music. It's a brave thing for you to do seeing as I have come to this channel to watch you run the latest and greatest gadgets through their paces, and of course that's great! But in the end it's about beats, bass lines, chords, melodies (lyrics possibly? ;)). Thanks again brother!

    This was really interesting. I'm forever assessing my workflow as I don't have an engineering mindset and it takes a long time to get focused and productive when using all my gear.
    If you (or anyone else here in comment land) could advise on where to start with developing an outboard setup I'd appreciate it loads - I think it makes such a difference especially if using a variety of sound sources. I really want more sonic cohesion and to be able to play live with Ableton catching the performance without spending ages just messing with parameters on everything like you said - it just gets away from you then. Committing to audio is def key!

    Love this video, you've come to the same understanding that I've just found. I felt some pressure to use Live as everyone seems to love it, even tried the MPC but I'm not feeling that workflow. I've gone back to my roots with Reason, it just feels right. It helps the mordern versions play nicer with my synths as well as the MPC.

  • @ryanjay6241
    @ryanjay6241 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really like the look of your setup. There is always something to be said for the simplicity of having most of what you need in front of you. That's actually why I sold my S950s and Emax, they sound great but they take too much focus off what you're actually trying to accomplish. When you're really in the mood to spend hours playing with sounds they're fine, but when you're not the MPC alone can handle everything and gets you where you want much faster.
    I actually have a 384 point master patchbay and a 32 channel large format console - but I rarely use it these days. My audio interface has 32 inputs, so I mostly just keep my MPC and ASR and synths patched directly into the interface. This way I just play and get sound, and it's already ready to record. The problem with a huge setup like that is the PC/console is on one side of the room and the MPC/ASR/turntable on the other - which is part of the reason I love the MPC 4K so much. I can just transfer samples via USB drive and file/directory management is actually pleasant with the unit - I can vibe out focused on just my MPC/ASR alone until I get something going, before I even have to worry about the PC.

  • @contumancia
    @contumancia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    nice mixer man! for me the best way to use it is just recording the stereo output from it to get your final track. if you mix it later in ableton you dont get the juice from analog mixing. also i tend to agree on making music olny when you want to do it. but i tested that it also works if you force yourself to do it : )

    Hey man I'm late to the race, but keep doing what you are doing. You are making a difference in peoples lives by sharing your knowledge of music, production and sound design. Just by watching your movements and workflow, I've learned so much. Even listening to your background music sometimes will inspire me to turn on my electibe and just mash something up to see what happens.
    I do this as a hobby, and for my love of music. Unfortunately, people are struggling right now, either financially, socially, sickness, etc or maybe just lonely because of the virus. Quarantine has given me more free time by myself, (and Im sure your subscribers too) and I spend that in my small studio, creating music to spread love and joy to others, even if they think my music sucks lol.
    As you say, Knowledge is power and we appreciate yours, good sir! Keep it going!

    I didn’t think that was a weird video at all. I thought it was great. Your comments make total sense. Keeping it simple is huge for productivity, and it pays off in the output too. Drums, bass, some melodies, throw some sprinkles on top and there it is. Cheers. I do have an MPC question - I’m an Octatrack user, but the MPC one looks interesting. What’s your take on the new one, and maybe even something like the 1000, as compared to using an octatrack? Keep creating, homie!

    This is great Ricky and I can 'feel' it too. I've recently moved to making tracks out Elektron boxes, modular & analog synths and a good DJ mixer so out of the computer box. There is definitely a limiting factor in play and I think this limitation is exactly where the 'feel' or 'vibe' is coming from, tracks happen in a single take. Out of The Box creation seems to preserve a lot of the humanisation and spontaneity, happy accidents which are not necessarily a natural thing when creating in the box, limit your choices, limit the distractions, this works for me and is a much faster workflow. The DAW is always there to polish things off when you are done.

    When i first got my MPC 2000XL back in the early 2000's i spent some time listening to the kick drum fading out when you hit stop!!
    There's something magic about it, the way the thing just pumps beats out sounds so good. I know these were the later ones and not 12bit and the D/A was different, but even then.
    Now I'm at the point of thinking of letting it go along with a Yamaha RS7000 and trying the Akai Force. Might keep the 2KXL for a bit longer though just in case it doesn't work out!
    Patch bays are very overlooked in small setups, one of best things you can get for keeping things in order.

    Hi Ricky! I know this is a bit of an old video of yours but I’m on the verge of buying the same mixer and have a question. I know you’ve touched briefly on this, but I absolutely need to make sure before I purchase mine if the post fader setting also includes the EQ. Logically speaking the fader is last in the circuit so that means it’ll include the EQ settings, but I cannot seem to find any information on the internet which verifies this. Hope you can shed some light! Jelle

    • @RickyTinez
      @RickyTinez  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'm like 90% sure that it does include the EQ settings. I remember my goal with finding a mixer at the time was to have whatever movements I made on the channel strips be recorded and sent out into the individual outputs and that must have been why I bought this mixer. It's been ages and I've since sold this mixer. BUT I'm pretty sure it did do that, fingers crossed! 🤞🏼
