    🥁 In this tutorial I'm going to show you how you can create bass sounds with the Nord Drum 3P. They sound kind of like analog synth bass sounds, and it can be really fun to use the sound engine of the Nord Drum 3P for temporarily becoming a bass player 😉

    Wow, I've been using my Nord Drum 3P for a year now and I actually learned something new, thanks!
    Here's something that might be new to you and worth exploring in a video (as this took me forever to figure out): the Nord Drum 3P can receive MIDI commands for each pad on 6 different channels, but it sends ALL MIDI OUT only on channel 16 with a Note On / Note Off event #60, 62, 64, 65, 67 and 69 for pads 1-6. This means that your DAW records all pads in a single MIDI channel 16, just with different pitch values, which can be very confusing. And in the worst case when you play these notes back on channel 16, ALL pads will play ALL notes 😣
    To resolve this, I use the "Event Processor Plus" from MIDI Solution to map the Note On / Note Off events to different MIDI channels: #60 is converted to MIDI channel 10, #62 to 11, #64 to 12, #65 to 13, #67 to 14 and #69 to 15. This means, I can now record each drum pad to a different channel, change the pitch in my DAW, and then play it back to the Nord Drum on individual channels. No more mess and I can use the Nord Drum as a MIDI controller to play stuff directly into my DAW into seperate channels.

      Thanks for sharing! I didn't encounter this problem yet, since I was always using other channels than 16 while using individual channels. But I will see if I'll find out more about it.

    This is stellar! Oh my gosh! I just picked up a 3P & I'm still having fun, pre-tweaking. You gave me the courage to tackle it all. Thank you so much. Funny too!

    Great video Jannis. I’ve struggled to get my head around the various synthesis options on my 3P as there’s not a lot of info out there, and this has been a great help. More demos on how the other wave forms can be best used would be very welcome!

    What drumsticks and tip ends do you recommend? A Nylon tip or a wooden one?

    • @JannisLeWolff
      @JannisLeWolff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, you should try some thicknesses- the higher the number, the thinner they are. So 2B for example are very thick, while 7A are really thin. You should test them and see what feels best for you. Nylon tips sound brighter on cymbals and generally louder/punchier, but I personally don’t like them. For a drum pad nylon tips don’t give you any benefit. I’d rather be concerned that they would damage the pad when you play really loudly, but that’s probably me being over-concerned 😉

      I use wooden tips with my Nord Drum 3P, but as I'm a beginner and not a "real drummer", it helps me to use heavy hickory 3A sticks to hit harder and actually get a MIDI velocity of 90-127 on a pad. While I find it easier to play soft jazzy hi-hats with a very light 8A maple stick.

    When you tune a drum, does that midi note get passed through?

    • @JannisLeWolff
      @JannisLeWolff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean that in case you send a melody to a pad through an individual midi channel, the melody gets ignored because you set the pitch at the pad? In this case, the pitch setting on the Nord Drum acts like some transpose knob, where you can transpose the melody up or down, put it can't be ignored.

    • @dangayle
      @dangayle 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JannisLeWolff I was thinking the opposite. If you use the Nord as a midi pad, does it transmit the note assigned to the pad or does it transmit the actual pitch of the drum as played

    • @JannisLeWolff
      @JannisLeWolff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah okay- in this case it transmits the midi note it is set to, no matter what pitch it creates on the Nord Drum. At least I haven’t found a setting for changing that.

    • @g3cd
      @g3cd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dangayle The Nord Drum transmits all MIDI out on channel 16, but with a note value of #60 for pad 1, 62 for pad 2, 64 for pad 3, 65 for pad 4, 67 for pad 5 and 69 for pad 6. This means that the actual pitch is not transmitted. On the other hand, you can play the Nord Drum through a MIDI controller like an Arturia keystep 37 and then a) address each pad on a different MIDI channel and b) play different pitches on that pad, which is for example great for playing some bells and chimes in bank C. You could also play chords with a single pad by using a pitch shifter effect pedal like the Meris Hydra. There is a workaround to map each pad to a different outgoing channel, using a MIDI Solutions Event Processor (see my other post under this video).
