Good ol' Hoss; when men were men; we've come a long way since he left us May 1972....

We've certainly"fallen"(as far as men were men) a long way since then.

If Hoss knew he was onley making greedy rich people so very much richer , Hoss would drown them all in a horse tank ..

I loved Dan "Hoss" Blocker! There's some irony with this particular video. Just 2 videos down on my recommended list is: *"Bonanza" stars in Austin | Austin, TX 1966* , and the video shows both Lorne Green & Dan Blocker,.... *SMOKING* ! lol

My dad knew him and I got to see him once about the time he did this commercial. Great guy but a character like Michael Landon. He grew up here in West Texas. Dan was still smoking a year before he made this ad.

His speech style is similar to the one in "Hoss and the Leprechauns" episode of Bonanza. Dan Blocker has been long gone (nearly 50 years), but Hoss Cartwright is immortal.

My dad and people like Dan are long gone along with their values. A bygone era.

Seems like only yesterday when the Cartwrights came riding up side by side on the TV screen on their horses and the twang of the guitar with the theme song rang out.

The irony of this video is they never want to "lick it" because it would be like killing the goose who lays golden eggs.

Regarding the (smoking ) comments. Back in those days, smoking was everywhere. It was hardly known to the public that it had dangers. People would smoke on a plane, on a bus and ,well everywhere. There were ashtrays in doctors offices ! So, it was quite a different world .

Dan Blocker was a highly intelligent guy and also a heavy smoker. If he is promoting cancer awareness, he should have stopped smoking.

That's not how he died. He went in for a routine gall bladder operation. Complications from the surgery caused a pulmonary embolism in his lung, which killed him.

Well it probably was not so much that, that killed him, but infection afterwards due to being in hospital probably. I had skin cancer surgery on my back and got infection. Most painful thing ever. Lasted about 9 days. Poor Dan.

It was 1966.. the big tobacco companies were still spending a lot of money to hide the fact that smoking was causing lung cancer. By that time there were already a few studies but it was still not widespread knowledge. Also, smoking was extremely common back then.
Dan Blocker was a really great actor and is cool to see he also participated in this kind of campaigns.
