The look on Cavett's face said that even HE knew back then what Everett said was not cool. And if he was referring to Lily's orientation, that was even more wrong in that time frame. Everyone KNEW that Liberace was gay. Nobody talked about it publicly. People just did not discuss their orientation or other people's orientation openly. It was considered impolite at best and extremely rude at worst. She did well to walk out instead of becoming confrontational.
I grew up in this era & realize how deeply ingrained the disrespect was. As a girl I never questioned it & spent a lifetime battling for my dignity, always feeling on some level that such dignity was a joke. Bless Lily.
Are you serious? Just because you were too weak willed to stand up for yourself don't blame all men. I was raised in an Italian American household and was the only daughter. I was treated differently because that's what the majority of the civilized world does with females and males. But I was never disrespected or had to battle for dignity. Even out in the world where I did run into chauvinist I always held my own. I never would have gotten upset by his statements are felt intimidated by them.
Oh, Lily simply saying, "I have to leave" and walking out, the perfect response. Many of us have been in situations when talk grows vile and sometimes, instead of engaging, just following one's instincts and departing works the best. Way to go, Lily.
There is courage in walking away but only after you've made your points. However, if you can't have a conversation about your believes and morality with someone that opposes your views than your point of view is weak before the opposition. There was no malice in what Everett was saying, he made his points as much as he could but when it came for Tomlin to express her points in a reasonable and collected manner, she choice to walk away - this is not strength. Rather you believe that Tomlin was right here or that Everett was right it, that's not my point. Tomlin didn't respect Everett enough to have a reasonable conversation with him but on the other hand Everett did respect Tomlin enough to speak his views to her. He wasn't mad or afraid, he said what he wanted to say - he got his points across. Agree or disagree with them. Tomlin didn't give Everett the chance to change his mind. Conversations like this are not about changing a persons mind at the time of the conversation, these conversations allow for reflection and if the other sees value in the opposing points, a time for personal correction. This reflection is on both sides.
@@bloodtopaz8816 I disagree. Its not her job to convince him of anything. Everyone has the right to leave situations they don't like. They aren't politicians and this isn't a debate. Good gaslighting on your part though. What is weak is when a man feels the need to denigrate women in order to make himself feel powerful.
@@ngpainter No, it's not her job - she's not getting paid to convince anyone but running away from standing up for yourself in a conversation is cowardly. She has nothing to lose except what, the conversation? Why get yourself into a conversation that has meaning when all you have to do is run away to your echo chamber and feel superior there? You should never put anyone down for the sake of it but I don't think he thought what he was doing was wrong - it was just his way of looking at things. There is a difference, one is out to hurt someone because you can and one is just how you see the world and live within it. Right or wrong. The man is dead, can't ask him now but if you could, I wonder what he would say? Walk tall or walk small. Tomlin had the opportunity to talk about how she really felt and instead turned tale and ran away. This could be a conversation where she had equal ground with Everett. Woman want to feel powerful, they want the respect of men? Than the first thing they need to do is have a conversation with them about their differences and their common ground. Men and woman are different but intellectually is where they can meet and can be equals. That's where we can find common ground and progress together.
You left out a very important part of that quote, which is the ending. Believe them "the first time". That part is important so we don't let people continuously do the same thing to us over and over thinking they may change.
What a jerk. Gave her underwear for her friend with big heavy straps. Asked her if she'd ever signed a thing. Spent a whole segment talking about his stage name. Called his wife an animal he owns. Then he make the remark about her certainly not being interested in another woman.
He certainly covered all the bases when it came to being offensive. I wish more people would do this today so we'd know where they really stand but most are too scared of being cancelled by PC culture.
@Sara Mill I think Toni Benedict was an angry woman and feminism had nothing to do with it. No man should say he OWN another human being. That is so disrespectful and that poem he wrote did nothing to explain why he said own.
I fucking LOVE this; Everett got visibly rattled by her walking out on him and even Cavett calls him out, or gives him chances to clarify himself when he steps in it further down the road. It started...the fuming...when he kissed her hand. That is over-the-top for me, too. It is too forceful. Had I OFFERED him my hand to kiss, rather than shake, now that is another thing. I used to love him on Medical Center, and now I see who he really is... and I am a bit sick.
The conversation started before the show, so technically she was being an idiot to him and did not put up with her stupidity when she started it. The more you know...

@@leatherandtactel What do you think Maya was trying to say?
