I worked closely with Chinese foreign exchange students at my college and they had never heard of racism in their lives. Legitimate/unwarranted hate against Japanese, Taiwanese, Hong Kongers is not in the same category. Having been only around Chinese their entire life and unaware of the reality of racism in America they had a lot to get used too when they first came to America. They didn't understand American cultural stereotypes against Chinese (mostly based around low-tier Chinese-American restaurants e.g. ding dong wonton soup fortune cookie), or even why racial tensions between "Blacks" and "Whites" existed. While I love Faye, it's likely that she just doesn't have any idea about what wearing a war bonnet means to certain Americans. I guess none of you have ever heard of the cultural revolution or purging or such ideas? You know, that time when teachers were rounded up and murdered for trying to educate Chinese youth about such issues? Why should Faye, a Chinese singer, follow standards set by American social critics and activist groups? This footage is also from before the term "cultural appropriation" even came into prominence in academic and social discourse in America. My question is, why are you retroactively appropriating your own culture onto a Chinese artist from two decades ago? Do you understand the irony of this situation? What constitutes cultural appropriation to one culture is not the same to another. I think more Americans need to open their eyes to the world around them before trying to be so adamantly politically correct, because it often doesn't extend outside of American borders. Are you all going to protest when some random American buys a T-Shirt that says "Dog Shit" in Chinese characters on it? I think not. Just listen to the fine music and keep your narrow-minded politics masquerading as self-aggrandizing political correctness out of it.
