  • Ever heard of biochar?
Making and using biochar in the garden has loads of benefits like creating a healthy soil ecosystem. Biochar takes a long long time to decompose meaning it has a great potential to store carbon in the soil.
We use biochar at OmVed Gardens as part of our permaculture practice.
Here’s Vicky with top tip on how you can create your own biochar

I add all of my charcoal to the compost pile and send it through the cycle before applying (with the compost) to the gardens. Easy peasy.

quench the coals in the wheelbarrow when no more flames to increase your yield. Your charging has pretty limited life - best to add some compost or vermicast to it as well to increase the diversity of life way more. Important to charge char with nutrients AND life (biology)... Happy gardening!

"Its like a battery without any charge at the moment..."
So its not biochar until you charge it. 🫤
Biggest mistake I keep seeing in these videos is calling the charcoal or activated carbon "biochar" right after the burn. It is not. Its just charcoal or activated carbon.
Once you charge it by soaking it in compost tea, mixing it in compost, manure, worm castings, etc. THEN you have biochar.
