There is no set interval and mine almost never needs adjustment. If you hear the cam chain making a slight ticking sound, adjust it. Otherwise, ride it!
Hey Jeff, I’m looking to replace the stock tensioner on my 19 250xcf and am curious if you prefer theTokyo mods tensioner over the dirt tricks tensioner and why.
I don’t have a preference. I ride a 500 and only Tokyo Mods makes one for it.

Hi. I just did a top end rebuild on my 2013 450 exc, first time ever, with new piston and cylinder plus new valves, springs, etc. It runs much better now but I have that ticking noise surely from the cam chain. It was there before I did the rebuild. I double checked the valve clearances after a couple hours riding and they are still in spec. With that needless history my question is... what if I dont do anything and just put up with the noise? Thanks.

The adjuster will get worse over time and eventually fail.
Where does the actual noise come from? Is it the chain hitting the tensioner pad bc the tensioner is off or broken?
No. The pad is not broken, just a loose chain.
Do you really need to be at TDC? Just remove and replace the tensioner, does not affect timing I would think.

What changes with the chain since you have to put it TDC?
There is no tension on it at TDC.
