Interesting but not something I would attempt. I just bought a 2012 FX35 and drivers side door doesn't catch unless it is open fully. It keeps closing on my leg. Och. I was told "that.s the way car doors are" hmmm
This is a free fix, but you can also just buy a new door check and replace it, that way you don't have to open up the old one and move the rubber piece. I think I linked a new door check in the description.

That would probably work too, but the difference in width is quite a bit, it would probably take a lot of shims.
