Shade tree mechanic showing how I fix problems on my own cars as cheap as possible, and sometimes for free. I link all the parts and tools that I use in the video descriptions, and I'm adding chapters to my videos to help you access the information you need quicker. I focus more on thorough description for the sake of providing value rather than creating fast-paced entertainment content for the sake of getting views. I figure if you have found my video, you want to know how I did something specific, so I even include some mistakes I make along to way, as well as how I solve the self-inflicted problems that come along with learning as you go.

My ass over here say screw drilling. I whip out the torch and melt it off. As a former salt belt mechanic. Invest in cutting torches. Harbor Freight has a brand called Olsen. Also Grinder and punch/hammer make quicker work. You have plenty of space to use it.
Without a torch, this was the way to go for me.
amzn.to/4gqdRK2
I like that
I forgot to put some gasket sealer on the corners, do you think there is gonna be a problem?😅
And How did you find the diagrams? Awesome job!!!🎉
@brianalexisfloresochoa7088 thanks Brian. I downloaded the service manual online. If you email me I can send it to you. benwrenchinyt@gmail.com
Yes
Learned that while in trade school. They’re called jacking screw holes and you use them as such. You’ll want to use Grade 8 hardware when it’s really stuck but sometimes a hard whack with a brass punch and a machinists hammer are all it takes.
I never knew they had a name! I guess they aren't super common, but it's nice when they are there!
thank you.
👍👍
🛠️🎵
Did you put a seal on the yoke besides the seal on the diff.
No, that's the only seal I needed to replace with this
Good job
Thank you!
Unless you're working on a late 60's early 70's American car, you're going to be using Metric sizes. It's not just "FOREIGN" cars.
Don't be like me and forget you have the parking brake set before trying to pull it 😢
I would love to be able to say I've never done that haha
It's an 8 Millimetre bolt, or 8 mm.
Thanks. What's the 1.25 then?
@@benwrenchin the 1.25 is the Thread Pitch. (1.25 millimeters from the top of one thread to the top of the next one. ) M8-1.0 is one thread every 1.0 millimeters; a finer thread than the m8-1.25, but the same diameter of bolt.
@ronkruchten5867 thanks, I thought so
We call them M8 x 1.25, not dash.
Thanks
BFH
That works too haha
It's not a rotor; it's a drum -(drum brakes).
This one has disc and drum brakes. The box said rotor, so that's what I called it.
DO NOT MAKE THAT BRAKE DUST AIRBORNE .
@@SomnoNaut inhale, smack with BFH blow away the rust n brake dust, repeat 🤣
95% of them are 8 by 1.25 I've seen some larger cars and Japanese trucks that use a 10 mm.
Good to know thanks!
Or just tap that junk rotor/drum with a light hammer ... and skip that drive to the hardware store and enjoy a longer lunch-break and a better profit (assuming you work on vehicles for a living). Very tedious of course with the "rotor-drum" situation because of the small clearance between the parking brake shoe and the drum portion of that rotor/drum (like a JEEP).
Yes, this is a "rotor-drum"
Honda!
Subaru
That usually works. But I’ve had drums that defied a $1,500 (used), Snap On puller. I’ve been afraid a drum would shatter. I wish people would clean both surfaces, and rub aluminum anti-seize into both surfaces when reassembling.
F that. My$20 Harbor Freight grinder and a cutoff wheel slices through those stubborn drums
You cut off drums?
When I use anti seize I always end up using way too much haha
Very few rotors have those tapped holes for removing the rotor.
It's nice when they are, especially when you have the right bolts on hand
I've only replaced them twice, but apparently both Mazda and Toyota use them. Was a big help.
Well i see your not in new york
Nope, but I am in the rust belt
Or Massachusetts 😅
Rotor?
amzn.to/42oyt2a
And if you don't have holes you use a bfh
Hittin' it with the ol' purse is always an option!
Just use a air hammer on the rivets
The air hammer didn't even knock them through after I had popped off the head of the rivet. I had to drill down more until I finally got deep enough to air hammer it out.
I use air hammer on rivets watch my videos on lowering kit 2008 Chevy Silverado I knock off all rivets with sharp air hammer
@elijahsautorepair9727 I didn't see where you took off the rivets, but I will say that truck is 15 years newer than mine. I'm also in the salt belt, so I'm guessing mine were rust welded in a bit more than those were haha
Cool!
You're collecting even more badges haha
@benwrenchin it's my hobby

If your compressor is running, and pressures are good it would be an indication of something in the hvac box. Did you check to make sure the mix door is moving, could be stuck inside the box not allowing it to completely swing to the cold side. also those digital hvac controllers are a common failure point. super common on these. evaporator could also be full of dirt and grime. The switch on the accumulator is the cycling switch, they are super common for leaking, I actually have a video on that. the HP switch only kicks on when the system reaches too high of a pressure.
I haven't opened up the HVAC box yet. I did change out all the blend door actuators. I believe the mix door moves because it goes from warm to hot when the heat is on. I don't know enough to know if the cold is a separate mechanism. I changed the switch on the accumulator. I never found the high pressure switch. Wasn't sure where to go with it, I figured once it's not below zero outside I might start replacing parts one by one to narrow it down further.
@benwrenchin The high pressure switch is the one that you changed in this video. Another thing you can do is grab a hold of the high pressure and suction hoses where they run through the firewall and see if they're cold. If they are that's an indicator that the evaporator has insufficient air flow across it
@MegaMarclar good to know, thank you my man!
Some manufacturers use bolts instead so if they can why not the others?
Bolts would be way easier to remove
That’s neat
I really like these. Also they turn on automatically when you open the jaws. That's another cool feature I left out.
@ I’ll be needing one to check my brake pad thickness, now I’ll have other uses for it😂 thanks to this video
@zoeplayz6752 for brake pads, make sure you get one that has a flat piece that sticks out the opposite end to measure things flush to a surface, like brake pads to the backing plate
@ ahh I see that makes sense, with those the wheels can stay on I’m guessing..well the one I’m looking at is gauge measure pen it’s called
@zoeplayz6752 yes, that's probably what you need. You'll always have to take the wheels off to measure the thickness of your brake pads though.
Nice video! Very good explanations. I just did the same seal on the drivers side of the front differential. I found a way that made it wayyyy easier to get that stub axle out and back in. Loosen the two bolts on the axle tube on the passenger side like he did, but leave the nuts a few turns on. Then remove the lower bolt under the diff like he showed. Then loosen the upper bolt on the top side of the diff but do not remove it! It'll fall on your head and that'll ruin a guy's day for sure. Leave the nut a few threads on for safety. It's not that bad to get to, I got in it with my air impact and some extensions. Then push up on the front driveshaft and the whole diff will rock forward and give you enough clearance to get that stub axle out under the frame. Much easier than the slide hammer. Hopefully this helps somebody out. Again, thanks for a quality video!
Thanks! Appreciate your explanation. That sounds like a good way to do it without scraping the axle plate on the frame. I'd do what this guy said!
I would just grab my arc welder set it to 200 and just melt them out
I would have done that...if I had a welder haha
All this noise to remove couple of rivets😂😂
I wish the ball joints weren't riveted in, but in Chevy's defense, they did last 30 years!
I was told by various people and mechanics that you need genuine Honda power steering fluid since it has a special ash in it that won’t cause leaks in the hose. All the other fluids will cause leaks in the hoses. Just an fyi
Good to know, thanks man!
Replacing the control arm complete with ball joint is easier, but I have also used angle grinder to cut the heads off of those rivets, and air hammer to punch them out. Makes quicker work than your drill method.
Getting the heads off the rivets wasn't too bad, but even with them off my air hammer wouldn't punch them out. That's why I had to drill even more.
th-cam.com/channels/FlY7KcTa7K_OLlCc2T9CpA.html
I've never seen a riveted ball joint
These trucks have them that way from the factory
Nowadays, you replace the whole lower arm, but back in the day you could buy just a ball joint. I remember grinding those off and then taking a punch and punch them through.
I had to drill a bit more after I got the heads off because even my air hammer wouldn't punch them through. I finally got it though.
Great job, man!
Hey, thanks!
Hear me out, if you take a cutting wheel and cut lines though the top of the rivet kinda in a checkered pattern it'll pop right out with a air hammer saves a ton of time
I'll try that next time, thanks
There's about hundred bucks in bits gone!
I dulled a few doing this, but you can resharpen them, and a full set of bits is like $10
These types are the absolute worst i hate them but if ur confident with a cutoff wheel it will save a ton of time. If u mar it just a lil its not gonna hurt it as long as its not a deep cut, then ur welding it and grinding it down.
Believe it or not, this was the second side I did so this was actually way better than the first side haha
@benwrenchin i remember the first time i done them my first thought " how tf do these come out?" Lmao i said if its liquid itll come out lmmfao. First time i used a torch and was methodical with it it was xtra work but got it done. 2nd time an old school tech said use a cutoff wheel and air hammer. I thanked him later lol.
I'm going to try a cutoff wheel next time. I have one, but it's garbage
I felt the relief when it finally came out. Been there lol
Yes, it took a while but I knew it was coming out, one way or another!
45min of all that drilling smh a cut off wheel cut a cross in the top of the rivet and an air hammer, hammer and chisel 10min and its out
Even with the heads knocked off, my air hammer still wouldn't knock them out. I had to drill quite a bit more into them before it would go through.
I'm pretty sure the manufacturer expected you to replace the whole lower arm, not just the ball joint.
Makes sense, other than the fact that the ball joints wear out way faster than the control arm bushings.
Yeah but the aluminum control arms on my Cobalt SS cost 3x more than all the bushings and new ball joint combined. I'm drilling out.😊
Might save yourself from having to get an alignment too. I thought that's what I was doing, but I might just go ahead and get one anyway.
Отлично, теперь заказываем новый рычаг, потому что этот сгниет через 10.000км😂
The new one bolts on, so a lot easier to take off when it fails!
This is pretty cool, seeing different mounting designs of ball joints, I had no clue! Looks like somewhat of a pain to remove tho!!
It was, but that's expected with riveted ball joints. I'm sure there's a better way to do it, but this is how I got it out
Haters gunna hate
It's surprising to me how many positive comments I get vs. how many are negative. TH-cam must be a way better space than Reddit 😆
