    It's awesome to see laser printers as cheap (inexpensive) as they are these days.

      With HP it's the razor, and blade model. If you don't need the scanner then a Brother hl-l2315dw B/W Laser printer can be had for under $100 USD, and generic toner can be had for $9 - $11 USD on eBay.

      @@CommodoreFan64 Picked up my Samsung all-in-one a few years ago for a steal price on ebay. Thankfully I never upgraded the firmware. From what I understand the newer FW rejects generic toner. As far as its security, well wish me luck.

      @@lvtube411 That's not as bad as the article that came up on my phone tonight about the new HP ink that has DRM built into it where if you want more ink you have to sign up for a service where they automatically ship ink to you when it runs out, and if you cancel your subscription you can't use the ink left in your existing tanks, and it also disables the printer from being used, more or less.

    Thank you for the video! I setup this HP LaserJet M148 printer on my desktop wireless setup, works fine. Then I set it up on my wife's laptop and it won't print wireless. I could have the laptop right on top the printer and it will not print. I have it set as the default printer (downloaded all the drivers), but it always says "offline" even when it is on. I have no other printers on her laptop. I uninstalled the printer and reinstalled and the same message comes up.
    Any idea what the problem could be?

    • @LonSeidman

      Do you have the printer connected to your wireless network? you need to access it through the network not directly

      @@LonSeidman Hello, thank you for the fast reply. Yes it is connected through the network. I uninstalled the printer, reinstalled it, it worked fine for the first test. Then I restarted the laptop, tried again, said offline. Crazy.

      If you just need a basic B/W Laser printer with WiFi printing I'd suggest a Brother hl-l2315dw for under $100 USD, and generic toner can be had for less then $10 on eBay. I've even gotten mine to work with a Chromebook, Linux(Mint Mate is my distro of choice), and Android. I'd honestly rather have my scanner as stand alone, because my office had 2 HP Ink jet all in ones go poof after the scanners stopped working right out of warrienty, and with HP printers they stop printing if the scanner is screwed, and vise versa for the scanners.

    Thats a pretty good price for a Laser Printer with an ADF.
    You also forgot to mention that Toner/Laser has another advantage, it doesn’t streak/smear in the same way that inkjets do, and the text is sharper.
    ADF aint duplex but that expected at this price point. Might be good for a dorm.

    Good and helpful review. I just bought one and while it seems like a nice addition to the home office, the initial experience is badly flawed by the all but non-existent manual. I know manufactures don't like providing manuals because a lot of people don't read them, but a good number of us do. It's way more efficient than flailing around in your early use, or groping about while trying to remember how you did something a year ago. Is it too much to expect a drawing of where the toner cartridge is, where to find the access doors in the event of a paper jam or what's in the menus underlying the little keypad? I'll figure all this stuff out eventually, but then I'll have to help everyone else here do the same. All I ask is a simple b&w manual that will get me up to speed with a minimum of futzing around.

    Very interested in this printer. Can you (or anyone) offer any insight to the envelope feeder? Seemed to be located just above the paper tray. I'd like to know if multiple envelopes can be loaded at once, and if so, how many? I currently use an HP Inkjet which allows me to stack around 10 envelopes in the main paper tray. Many of the Laser Jets in this price range seem to accept only one envelope at a time, but I'm having trouble finding clear information on the topic with most any brand or model I look into. Thank you for the very informative and concise review.

    You didn't test if it can print from apps like Facebook and Pinterest. Based on your review, I bought that small HP Tango printer for my mother to print out recipes from those apps from her iPad, only to find out that it doesn't work with either one. It spits out blank pages. It's a known issue, and the "official" fix is to go through multiple steps to paste the source URL into Safari and print from there. That's well beyond my 78 year old mom's tech level.
    I like your reviews, but you skip over important compatibility checks. Is this one also incompatible with those apps?

    • @LonSeidman
      @LonSeidman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those apps don’t support printing so your options are limited

  • @JCD87

    4:59 you really said that? You want to input your Wifi Password on THAT keypad? There are easier ways, like a special tool you download and connect the printer to your pc (momentarily) and then insert the Wifi Settings by cable. Or, by an app. Several scenarios can be done here, by displaying a QR Code on the phone display (generated by input of user) and this could be scanned in by the printer to set itself up with. But that tacky keypad is the last preferred choice of input for that.

    I know that many of these printers, not just HP have the wifi in them but most will only setup over wps if you use the touch pad, otherwise you set it up over its wifi to access your wifi with user name and password, just use a phone and connect to its wifi and it normally gives you a web interface to set it up.
    Some also do the same over ethernet & usb, how I know this is my HP was setup over its wifi to connect to my wifi with password as I don't use wps as my wifi is roof mounted with 2 access points in the house.

    I use to be a fan of HP, but after having a few different ones go poof on me, and the prices of the ink going up, and having trouble with generics, I switched to a brother laser printer for my main printer, and have not looked back, and it only cost me $89, and generic toner cost me on average $9 - $11. I should also note Brother has good Linux support.
    Edit: Yes HP has Linux support, but depending on your distro, and printer they can be a bit of a pain in the ass to get setup.

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jothain The only HP printers I would buy at this point is an old Parallel port LaserJet where the toner is cheap, and it's easy to work on when it breaks, or an older HP PhotoSmart portable photo printer where the ink runs about $15 for generic, and will still work even if the printer can't read the ink levels like my HP Photosmart A716(so old the card reader can't read an SD card larger than 2GB so I transfer photos to a USB key then print).

I wish Hp made smartphones, but I guess they can't compete on price, but their quality is long lasting in my experience.

    I'd never buy HP Laser printer and I won't recommend anyone to get them. We had I think Pro M448fdw model at work. It worked for about month ok and then after few pages it's doing "cleaning" function. Not only that printing would pause for a moment, but it _always_ ruined previous printed page on queue. Firmware was update, one qualified service personnel also spend four hours trying to fix it. I spend about 8 hours of trying to fix that piece of shit. We've had similar cases in other models at our company too with HP printers, so it's not only that specific model. We've ditched them and replaced with Brother printers that have been vastly better quality on software and hardware side. Oh and a side note HP's official support says it's normal and they just do that. HP Printer division can go fuck themselves.
