That's the answer to the riddle of steel, the power is not in steel (broken sword), not in the flesh (Tulsa's severed head) but in your heart (Conan's will to survive and fight).
@@carig121 copied from another post but i thought it was a good addition to your post; "...He is grim and loveless, but at birth he breathes power to strive and slay into a man's soul. 4:20, I like that over the course of the movie that Conan actually discovers he can trust people more than steel. When he was hanging on the Tree of Woe, his best buddy and his girl came to rescue him. They could have went their own way and left him. Instead Subotai repays Conan for setting him free and Valeria shows that she truly loves him. In his fight with the last of Thulsa Doom's main henchman, he is moments from death only to be saved by Valeria at the last second. She kept her promise to fight by his side always in this life or the next. Once he gets to his feet, Conan shatters his father's sword which he was told he could always trust.
Thulsa Doom had supernatural hypnotic powers which is why he was able to freeze Conan's mum in place without her fighting back before he chopped off her head and he tried to do the same to Conan but Conan shook it off and killed Thulsa.
Yep! The movie doesn't do anything overtly obvious to indicate it, such as sparkly or glowing effects, and a lot of people miss the implication. I'm glad they didn't go hard on making it too obvious. The Snake-Man doing the charming. 😉
Yeah, his hypnotic abilities aren’t always picked up by everyone. Maybe if they threw in some kind of mild effect like seeing his dad’s face on Thulsa Doom’s body, more people would’ve gotten it. It’s like when Conan found that sword underground, none of us were really sure whether that was actually Crom, or just some forgotten king, whose empire had crumbled long ago.
"This you can trust." But the steel broke. "What is steel compared to the hand that wields it?" But they broke his flesh. "If I were dead and you were still fighting for life, I'd come back from the darkness. Back from the pit of hell to fight at your side." Valeria showed him that it's the Will of Steel that is strongest.
This! This is the answer to the Riddle of Steel. Trust not in swords, as his father taught, nor in flesh, as Thulsa Doom taught. But in Willpower alone, which defeated the mesmerism of Doom and set Conan on his path of vengeance in the first place.
I just love when he gets out of the cave where he gets his sword...you see the wolves that hounded him wake up and he gives this grin...and then just a cut and he's wearing all their pelts XD
Fun fact: the guy in the beginning at 4:40 on the rock is Arnold's fellow training partner Franco Columbu from the Golden Era and his long-time best friend, who unfortunately passed away just a few years ago.
You're gonna throw out ol' Franco but ignore Sven Ole Thorsen? Or Jody Samson, the renowned swordsmith who designed and crafted all the swords in this film and whose hands and arms we see in the opening sequence forging the Father's Sword?
Another fun fact 15:40 The black lotus merchant who talks about the snake cult is Ron Cobb concept artist and designer for this movie and many, many others. He designed the interior of the Nostromo in "ALIEN". and the Sulaco in "ALIENS"
Most of the Conan stuff was published in pulp magazines between 1930-1936 by Robert E Howard, LOTR was was finished 1956. This is nothing like LOTR that person who told you that did a disservice to you, Conan is 'Sword and Sorcery' and LOTR is 'Epic High Fantasy' (S&S is about kicking ass and then smacking ass:P)
Rexor actually had Conan's father's sword. It's the sword Conan shatters during his battle with Rexor at the Battle of the Mounds. Conan's sword is an Atlantean sword of an Atlantean king who was buried with his royal guards.
The director originally wanted pop music for the soundtrack. Luckily, he changed his mind. The sword master was actually the sword master for the actors, and he got a small part. The "camo" makeup at the end was worn by a female pit fighter, but the scene was cut. You can see her legs during the pit fights. The man who releases Conan was the same boy who chained him to the wheel. He had owned Conan for years.
As a teenager who had read all the original Conan stories, I was so excited when this came out! It was the first big role for Arnold and he was perfect for it. My friends and I loved it!

Father's sword broke as, forged by his dad, it was not meant to hurt the son. On the other hand, Conan has been gifted a king's sword that gave him the upper hand in combat
it wasn't just a king's sword .. it was an atlantean refugee-king's sword the sword was forged in atlantis with superior technology. 1000's of years before conan's time . when atlantis sunk beneath the atlantic ocean many surviors made it to the main land , some became noamdic others set themselves up as kings using their superior weapontry they manged to birng with them , this king was such a king. Also, the cimmerican's themselves are descendants of atlantis they were the ones that turned to a nomadic lifestyle . which made this fact far more significant than the movie "told you". also conan is not the last cimmerican being nomadic they were also very tribal there are many tribes of cimmerians out there.
I think because Arnold's English wasn't so good this early in his career they reduced his dialog which in the end was a wise choose. He still did a good job because he actually feels like the character. Not many body builders who are not native speakers could become a leading man in a movie.
Conan pre-dated the lord of the rings. Robert E Howard the creator of Conan is regarded as the father of the sword and sorcery genre. Both he and Tolkien had a huge influence on the fantasy genre.
It predated the publishing of Lord of the rings, but not the writing of Tolkien, which started all the way back before and during world war one, and Conan is not an influence on Tolkien.
To understand this film you have to know the world of Robert E. Howard. The thoughts he had were heavily concerned with the rise and fall of advanced civilizations. His father was a doctor and was very educated although he mostly cared for various people who lived and worked in the oil fields in Cross Plains, Texas. REH spent a lot of time at home caring for his mother and reading a lot about peoples and different races. REH lived from 1906 to 1936 but had accumulated a lot of wisdom in his short life. He had imagined an entire world that couldn't really be made into a film. Quotes from REH show how intelligent and forward-looking he was. That was all before The Lord of the Rings. There is a good film about REH "The Whole Wide World" from 1996 that you have to watch. cu 🙂
The Whole Wide World was a passion project for Vincent D’Onofrio, who played Bob Howard. Newcomer Renée Zellweger costarred and that landed her the role in her breakout film, Jerry Maguire (1996), opposite Tom Cruise. It was based on the book, One Who Walked Alone: Robert E. Howard, The Final Years. It’s also worth mentioning that REH was also friends with H.P. Lovecraft, who created the Cthulhu mythos. Both were published in Weird Tales, the fantasy and horror pulp magazine that was started in the 1920s.
This storyline differs from the novels and comics. As a Cimmerian (mountain tribes in a remote country) he fought against the more civilized country building a fort outpost in Cimmeria, when he was 13 years old. Later traveling the known world as a thief, mercenary or pirate I had 47 different books by several different authors

Valeria said you Conan, if I was dead and you were fighting for life, I'd come back from the darkness, back from the pit of hell, to fight at your side. When Rexor had him on the ropes, she came back. In Germanic lore, she would be what you'd call a Valkyrie/shield maiden. And you didn't notice and other viewers already said it, but Conan killed Doom with his father's sword
In last season's Stranger Things David Harbour picks up a sword during the fight in the Russian prison. It's a Conan sword. The stance he assumes with it is the same as Conan's too.
Man, the memories of my friends and I playing out the final battle in our front yard with broomsticks for swords, homemade bow and arrows, cardboard axes, and our bikes as horses are times I will never forget. As 80's kids, we couldn't get enough of these medieval aged movies despite the injuries we sustained roughing each other up pretending to be these characters! Oh, and as for 'Another story', I wouldn't even bother looking at Conan the Destroyer. It pales in comparison to Barbarian. But... Olivia D'abo does make the film watchable.
The sword made in the beginning of the movie is often called "The Father's Sword." Rexor, the older, mustachioed henchman, appreciated the workmanship when Thulsa Doom's army raided Conan's village, and still possessed it 20 years later. When the adult Conan fell into that tomb, he found a sword that was apparently made for a former king or emperor. It's often called " The Atlantean Sword" and would probably have been made with better techniques and better metals, which is why it breaks the Father's Sword in combat with Rexor. However, Conan recognized his father's work and chose to take his broken family sword for the final showdown with Thulsa Doom.

I grew up with this movie, it is deeply treasured in my family, my Father introduced me to Conan when I was a young boy, he passed when I was 10 years old. I like your reactions to it, they are genuine and cute, great reaction!
A few years back the idea of a new Conan film was floated (Didnt get up). Old (coz Arnold is old) King Conan having grown tired of ruling, takes to the wooded highlands to live as a hermit. But years later he comes to know of a terror that threatens his old Kingdom and he returns unlooked for (most of his people thought him surely dead) to Kick arse
I have also heard the the script for the movie Kull the Conqueror (the one with Kevin Sorbo) was origianly the script for the third Conan movie that had been orginaly planned with Arnold.
I love how subdued and natural her reactions are, I feel like so many reactors are not completely natural in their reactions, playing it up for the camera...she seems more like a regular person watching a movie.

If I were dead and you were still fighting for life, I'd come back from the darkness. Back from the pit of hell to fight at your side." Gotta admire a person that keeps their promise.
The DVD commentary for this was one of the funniest I've ever heard: John Milius took it so seriously, explaining the deep philosophy he had about steel, the transformation of the soul through hardship etc etc and Arnold was talking about meeting the witch in scene 16 two weeks ago at a cigar bar. He was still talking as he was leaving, you could hear him yelling from the door on his way out while they were recording lol
Loved your reaction! Conan the Barbarian is my favorite film, it's actually very deep. The Director John Millius wanted to do a trilogy showing Conan's growth into wisdom, but they dropped the ball and Conan the Destroyer is an inferior film. In this film Conan is actually innocent and naive. The villain Thulsa Doom is a deceiver, he turns people against their fathers, in fact the Mountain of Power is like a fake hippy paradise (Millius is critical of 60s counterculture). Doom promises paradise, but his cult actually consumes it's followers (think drugs, etc). Conan learns that willpower (and the friends that saved him) are what gives him real power (the Rule of Steel), that is why, after meditating, he destroys the cult, liberating the princess and everybody. He breaks the illusion and gives them freedom and also self responsibility, as they don't have Doom as a false father figure anymore. Millius wanted to keep exploring this, but the producer Dino de Laurentis wanted popcorn films. If you like Arnold watch his debut, the film that got him this role: Pumping Iron. It's a documentary on bodybuilding. It's Arnold's origin story.
Dungeons and Dragons is "High Fantasy" The Hyborean age of Conan is "Low Fantasy", with magic almost unheard of and practiced by few. Blood and Steel are the order of the day.
Of note: Magic in Sword & Sorcery (low fantasy) is often dangerous and corrupting. Most of those who practice it are closer to demonologists than the do-gooder pointy hatted wizards of High Fantasy. I like S&S for just that kind of dark fantasy take ; the world is universally brutal and bleak with all manner of terrible things to be survived.
@@SleepingGiant77 Unless you were playing old school chainmail, Charlegmain or Vikings setting, Or happen to possess any of the extremely rareRed Sonja.Or Conan modules, Pretty much every setting unless you were doing a homebrew setting is Mid to High magic. @@johannesbowers7467 first of all, you said that "Dungeons & Dragons is high fantasy". Even with the more commonly played of the settings that you mentioned, this isn't really true. Greyhawk(for instance) is, aside from elves and dwarves mingling with humans, no more fantastical in the experience of the average citizen then Hyboria. And Hyboria isn't even that low magic of a setting. Conan's always running into sorcerers, demons, ancient horrors, frog gods, giants, all manner of fantastical creatures, curses, the undead, etc. Spider-haunted Zamora and the distant land of Hyperborea ruled by giants are just as fantastic as anything in the Flanaess. Several of the other settings that you mentioned don't really have much more in the way of Fantastical elements than Conan does. Mystara gets wacky outside of Karameikos, depends on where you are. It could either be high fantasy or mid to low fantasy. Kara Tur and Maztica are no crazier than Hyboria, especially as they're merely fantasy versions of the same real world cultures that Howard cribbed from to make his more exotic locales. Blackmoor isnt really a setting that anybody played unless they were making up their own version. The only published material on it doesn't actually have any setting info. It doesn't really seem to be all that fantastical. Rather like Greyhawk. Melnibone- slightly higher fantasy than Conan in that it centers around a kingdom of what are basically elves and occasionally a demiGod shows up. That's not really crazy by Conan standards, especially as there's not a lot of spell casting going on. Also, there's no real published material on this setting unless you count Deities and Demigods. Ravenloft has numerous sub realms, many of which are low magic. It's kind of hard to have horror when everybody has superpowers. Birthright- you didn't mention this one but it's a great example of what I was talking about. Not that popular of a setting, but it shows that your standard D&D setting isn't really that high magic. Dark Sun is a Conan like setting with more fantastical creatures. It's definitely a step up. Not that far off though. Dragonlance- before the dragons returned to Krynn? I'd almost argue that it was higher fantasy but lower magic than Hyboria. And I'm not too sure about that. Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Planescape- definitely High Fantasy. At least Forgotten Realms is high magic. Although this one has changed a lot over the editions.
This movie is my absolute favorite, everything about it is awesome, from the soundtrack to the villain played by James Earl Jones, the ending battle was awesome with Arnold's prayer to Krom, and the riddle of steel
Yes, you're overthinking it. The movie is Conan the Barbarian... not Conan the Hero or Conan the Good Guy. It's a savage world full of extremely wicked people and things, and Conan is a savage person making his mark on it. He has honor, but he's NOT a nice guy. Also, Thulsa Doom was NOT trying to "convince" Conan he was his father... Thulsa Doom had hypnotic powers and he was hypnotizing Conan into believing that. And he was succeeding right up until Conan looked down and saw his real fathers broken sword in his hand. The sword stolen in his childhood and wielded by Dooms henchman until Conan broke it and recovered it in the final battle.
Leave it to Max Von Sydow to steal a scene with some choice dialogue and break your heart with such a powerful heartfelt performance. He was among the best of the best.
The Conan stories were similar to LOTR only by being in the same general genre of fantasy. LOTR took place in a world where Good and Evil struggle with each other. Conan lived in an essentially amoral world and was himself a reaver, mercenary and pirate. They were grim, dark stories where Conan simply lived for the thrill of combat, sex and drunkenness. Robert E. Howard, the author of the Conan stories was more of a horror writer than a fantasy writer. He was actually a close correspondent with H.P. Lovecraft and they both created versions of the "Cold, indifferent cosmos" sub-genre of fantasy. The movie, great as it is, really fails to capture Conan's sheer murderous ferocity, speed and agility.
A beautiful lady and fantastic film. Second CONAN film is more fantasy and adventure, one my favorites. Favorite Arnold films: PREDATOR, END OF DAYS, TRUE LIES, EXPENDABLES, and TERMINATOR. Great video, keep it up 👍
You were 90 percent wrong about everything about this Movie. It’s definitely not his father’s sword. It’s not first grade and everyone is good or evil?
Conan is not really a tale of good versus evil. Conan is far less concerned with good than many film protagonists. In the novels Conan is a man of action and ambition, but the whole "good vs. evil" dilemma isn't his focus. Surely Thulsa Doom is evil, but his big crime in Conan's eyes is he wronged Conan.
On the hill, The Wizard says the hills are consecrated by the spirits, and that is why nothing burns there. His shock was because the spirits allowed it to accept their payment, Valeria's death, and to let Conan honor a woman who fought demons to bring him back from the dead. Valeria comes back as a Valkrie, one of the female warriors that serve his god Crom. The Movie is framed around "The Riddle of Steel", and Conan's Journey to learning it on his path of revenge. The Ending: When Thulsa Doom tried to bewitch him right before Conan beheaded him, I do not believe Conan was falling for it. I think Conan remembered what Valeria said, that if she died, and he were facing 100 men, not even the gods themselves could keep her from coming to fight by his side, and she came back as a valkyrie, a warrior spirit that serves Valhalla and Crom. Her body, and his died. His father's sword, was shattered and failed its wielder twice. The only thing that survived the crucible of life was the determination of her soul, and his determination to avenge his people. Than answer to the Riddle of steel is the strength and determination of the human spirit.
I enjoyed your reaction to this, you should react to "Conan The Destroyer", there's also "Red Sonja" which has Arnie in it but only as a supporting character. Other Arnie films which I recommend are: "Terminator 2: Judgment Day", "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines", "End of Days", "Red Heat", "Raw Deal", "Eraser". There are many more but these are good ones to continue with.
On the commentary track there is this one detail I have always found hilarious. When Conan is walking in that priest's robe, it was either the director or the producer who commented that he "walks like an ostriche farmer". When ever I see that scene, I remember that comment and it makes me laugh every time.
It's worth mentioning that Thulsa Doom was at the very least a powerful sorcerer, and was thinking he could hypnotize Conan to gain an advantage in the same way he did Conan's mother at the beginning of the film before he beheaded her once she let her guard down. Thankfully, Conan snapped out of it. Conan also broke his father's sword in the battle with Doom's top guy near the end, then used that same sword - which was used to behead his mother - to behead Doom himself if I'm not mistaken.
Don't get too caught up in the good vs. evil conundrum. Conan, his followers, and his enemies are all about doing what is best for them, their families, and their tribes/countries-in that order.
Thulsa Doom hypnotized Conan's mom to make her guard down so he could test the sword on her neck and, by the end of the movie, he tried to do the same to old Conan.
This was his first dramatic role, but Ahnoldt was already world famous as a bodybuilder when he was cast in Conan. Add in James Earl Jones and a truly first class production, and it couldn't help but do well, but his real breakout role was The Terminator, which came next.
"He is Conan, Cimmerian. He won't cry, so I cry for him."
Everybody needs a friend like that.
Not to mention that he ran through a freakin' desert to find and rescue Conan from the Tree Of Woe, and he pinned that giant serpent's head to the wall so that Conan could finish it off.

The force is strong in him.
I always thought that if Thulsa hadn't said "my son" Conan wouldn't have snapped out.
Conan made his Wisdom save. Unfortunately his mother did not 😢
Yeah, his hypnotic abilities aren’t always picked up by everyone.
Gerry Lopez, who played Subotai, was a champion surfer and renowned surfboard maker.
He is 75 now and snowboarding and making snowboards. Wow!
absolute CHAD
"This you can trust."
But the steel broke.
"What is steel compared to the hand that wields it?"
But they broke his flesh.
"If I were dead and you were still fighting for life, I'd come back from the darkness. Back from the pit of hell to fight at your side."
Valeria showed him that it's the Will of Steel that is strongest.
And the love of a ride or die woman!
I think the whole concept of steel and flesh is lost on her.
This! This is the answer to the Riddle of Steel. Trust not in swords, as his father taught, nor in flesh, as Thulsa Doom taught. But in Willpower alone, which defeated the mesmerism of Doom and set Conan on his path of vengeance in the first place.
@@SleepingGiant77 "will" is the gift Crom breathes into the life of men.🙏
The paint all over him were protective spells against the dead that were coming to take him.

Good... evil... Conan was the one with the sword or the axe.
Rexor actually had Conan's father's sword. It's the sword Conan shatters during his battle with Rexor at the Battle of the Mounds. Conan's sword is an Atlantean sword of an Atlantean king who was buried with his royal guards.
And an Atlantean sword in the world of Conan KICKS ASS!!
It's a rated R film. Awful happens.
Subatai is the realest friend. "His is Conan: Cimmerian. He won't cry, so I cry for him."
The guy who tries to sell Conan and Subotai some Black Lotus, was the director
As a teenager who had read all the original Conan stories, I was so excited when this came out! It was the first big role for Arnold and he was perfect for it. My friends and I loved it!

Conan ain't Star Wars and Tolkien. The originals and adaptations are very nihilistic, much closer to Lovecraft (minus the casual racism of his time) and Dune.

Father's sword broke as, forged by his dad, it was not meant to hurt the son. On the other hand, Conan has been gifted a king's sword that gave him the upper hand in combat
By Crom!
it wasn't just a king's sword .. it was an atlantean refugee-king's sword the sword was forged in atlantis with superior technology.

Arnold at that time was working on his speaking with a voice coach to minimize his Austrian accent. You will notice in Terminator 2 years later.
Arnie's english was even then fine, but abusing his Austrian accent, made him more popular/exotic.
Conan pre-dated the lord of the rings. Robert E Howard the creator of Conan is regarded as the father of the sword and sorcery genre. Both he and Tolkien had a huge influence on the fantasy genre.
for the longest time I envisioned LOTR was from the 20s/30s and Conan from the 60s/70s. Guess I had it flipped around. Thanks for the clarification :)
It predated the publishing of Lord of the rings, but not the writing of Tolkien, which started all the way back before and during world war one, and Conan is not an influence on Tolkien.
L. Sprague de Camp visited with Tolkien and he told him he'd read Robert E. Howards works and that he rather liked them.
The first Conan, the barbarian short was published in 1932, the hobbit, tokens‘s first book was publishing 1937. They are contemporary authors.
CON-AN BARBARIAN also pre-dates GAME OF THRONES that viewers often compare it to, I don't know why,
The great : Max Von Sydow actor as the king who wants her daughter back . He was in many movies , also in a Stephen King movie called : Needful Things
The Conan the Barbarian books pre-date LoTR and are generally more fun to read.
There is a good film about REH "The Whole Wide World" from 1996 that you have to watch. cu 🙂
Howard's books(12)plus all the rest of the books written about Conan total at least 47. Anyway that's how many I've read.
However juicy the background was, it is completely unnecessary to enjoy his work.
@@robertmaez6706 I have done the same. I loved Howard's work.
@@russellbuck4175 I'm going to be 76 in Sept. and I still have all the paperbacks.
And while his personality changes little, he never stops learning.

I think one of the Brothers was former Oakland Raiders Linebacker Ben Davidson(?)
Not even in Pumping Iron did Arnie make so many guttural utterances that would become one of his signatures.

“He is Conan, Cimmerian. He won't cry, so I cry for him.” You cut out my favorite line! This is true brotherhood!
John Milius was one of the greatest screenwriters and directors of our time. It's a damn shame that he had a stroke.

Dungeons and Dragons is "High Fantasy"
The Hyborean age of Conan is "Low Fantasy", with magic almost unheard of and practiced by few.
Dungeons and Dragons has dozens of official campaign worlds, many of which are on the lower end of fantasy. It's not all Forgotten Realms.
@@SleepingGiant77 Unless you were playing old school chainmail, Charlegmain or Vikings setting, Or happen to possess any of the extremely rareRed Sonja.Or Conan modules, Pretty much every setting unless you were doing a homebrew setting is Mid to High magic.

The Howard estate Lawyers swiftly clamped down to reclaim the Hyborean Age setting for their own licensing purposes.
When Conan was laughing on the Tree of Woe, it was hysteria thinking that Subotai was just a mirage.

Conan is older than LOTR.

Great pic. The sequel is good too.
My fav, Arnold's range really shows in End of Days (1999) 😂😂😂
On the hill, The Wizard says the hills are consecrated by the spirits, and that is why nothing burns there. His shock was because the spirits allowed it to accept their payment, Valeria's death, and to let Conan honor a woman who fought demons to bring him back from the dead.
Valeria comes back as a Valkrie, one of the female warriors that serve his god Crom.
The Movie is framed around "The Riddle of Steel", and Conan's Journey to learning it on his path of revenge.
The Ending:
When Thulsa Doom tried to bewitch him right before Conan beheaded him, I do not believe Conan was falling for it.
In case you didn't know - Conan is based on a series of novels written by Robert E. Howard.
If you want to know more you should read the novels.
Watch from 1981, Dragonslayer. That is a good movie as well. A dark fantasy movie.
I enjoyed your reaction to this, you should react to "Conan The Destroyer", there's also "Red Sonja" which has Arnie in it but only as a supporting character. Other Arnie films which I recommend are:
"Terminator 2: Judgment Day",
"Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines",
"End of Days",
"Red Heat",
"Raw Deal",
"Eraser".
"I'm still waiting for the good, for a pillar of strength"
That, would be Conan. He's all he needs
Crom! You're watching Conan Cami?
Cool :)
Sure am! Thanks :)
This was his first dramatic role, but Ahnoldt was already world famous as a bodybuilder when he was cast in Conan. Add in James Earl Jones and a truly first class production, and it couldn't help but do well, but his real breakout role was The Terminator, which came next.
Yeah, that scene with his arms swinging that apparently heavy sword wasn't something you see in film all that often.
