yes the car problem isnt the engine itself, its the surroundings, the turbo, electric harness, maybe some sensors, manifolds... all of them combined made the car so bad they thought it was broken... it needs some mechanical work, but that is still a steal of a price, specially because he can fix everything by himself and not pay a shop to do it...

I think, the shop that told the guy their supra had a blown engine was a shady shop. And because the previous owner doesn't know how to maintain a supra, and check the health himself, you ended up with the deal of a lifetime. Comes to show, watch Sammit videos to learn about engine maintenance so you don't lose a perfectly good Supra. 👍🏼

  • @Vert344

What I predict... Is that the "Shop" that the original owner had it, probably (90% More than likely) told the owner there was issues hoping they would pay them a ton of money to get it fixed. When really there was nothing wrong with it. As such it just kept bouncing hands and losing value until it ended up with you. As for why the car had low miles, I'm speculating as I had before that in its prime it was probably a Garage Queen. A car they kept tucked away for Weekends or special occasions and wouldn't have it as their "Daily" driver. That would explain the low miles, and then after getting ripped off it just sat. With all of that, it is as you said. This car is your "Fated" car and you were MEANT to have this. There are blessings out there and this is yours. As much as I wanna see a rebuild, I personally want to see what the car is capable of in its current engine setup before instantly jumping to new Garrets and stuff. (I'd love to see a responsive Twin Turbo setup honestly.) To experience what the car was like during that Era but... to each his own. Get Rad Dan in on this as soon as possible to make this car perfection!~

140ks on the clock isn't low kms for Japan. It's easy to find well used 90s cars in Japan with under 100ks on the odometer since the country is so small and public transport is great. That said the car is definitely low kms if you're talking from an American or Australian perspective.

    • @Vert344
      @Vert344 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@harshivjotsingh8073 Oh i know. 140Kilometers is like... 86? Or 87k Miles in US metric. Which is honestly around the same amount of miles I got on my car when purchased.
Its under 100,000 miles which is pretty good on MOST used cars.
But yeah that was my point was that the owner probably only used the car sometimes. Rather they had another car or just used public transport most of the time we don't know. But it was definitely a Garage kept weekend warrior to be in as good of shape as it is.

    • @harshivjotsingh8073
      @harshivjotsingh8073 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@Vert344 its a 99 Supra that wasn't driven much for the last 3 years so that's like 6300 kms a year. Me and my wife daily an 96 EK (with 80,000 kms) and it does 7000 kms a year because we live inner city sydney but if were out in the country the car would do easy 10-15k a year. I have friends in Yokohama who "daily drive" cars and they barely put 5000 kms a year. The thing is most people in big cities don't need to drive their cars everyday. With the public transport infrastructure being so good, tolls so expensive plus living in a city, Japanese cars tend not to getup in mileage compared to cars in US and Australia where cities are mostly designed around cars and driving. I've seen well used 90s kei trucks with clear signs of being daily driven with well under 100ks imported here in OZ. 140ks in Japan sounds like a well driven car to me tbh but that doesn't mean it wasn't a garage queen. Someone did take good care of her and probs drove it most days of the week too

I usually check for blown headgaskets with a exhaust gas analyser machine. (every workshop overhere has one, its required to be able to do yearly roadsafety inspections like the shaken test you guys in Japan have to do)
If theres more than a few parts per million of unburnt gasoline vapour in the coolant overflow bottle you know theres a problem with headgasket or cracked head.. (do not suck coolant into the machine, that will cause a very hefty repair bill..(ask me how I know..)
Compression testers are not precise enough, if the engine only has a tiny headgasket leak under boost it will not show on compression test, but the emission test will definately show it...
Edit: engine sounds great, but i dont really like the sound coming from the gearbox.. (my s13 has the same whine in the drivetrain, I will have to swap or rebuild the box soon before it explodes..)

what could have happened, is that it had the misfire and was driven far enough to thin out the oil and when you have no spark the injector still shoots fuel into the cylinder washing the oil off the cylinder walls then with the oil diluted it washed off easily enough to show a false low compression reading. I always take care of any spark or injector related issues then change the oil and run for a few minutes before any compression testing. I actually had a customer with a no start condition one time that had diluted the oil so bad with gasoline that it lowered the compression to the point it would not start. I changed the oil and the car fired right up after a few cranks then I was able to fix the over fueling issue and it was good to go. it's an easy thing to overlook and especially if you've never seen it.

I said it 3 videos Ago the Engine is good just has some wear and the Turbo is blown,
since it's a Watercooled probably the chasing is broken and when water goes through,
it smokes and they thought it's a Headgasket.
(other point: there are "mechanics" who have NO idea that you HAVE to open the Throttlebody for a compression test)
If you put an Artec mainfold on,
wait for their new Twin Turbo kit they want to bring out next year,
and Def. Put a Harness and ECU on it.

I predicted from day one when you showed up in Okinawa that the motor wasn’t hurt. I just didn’t sound like it from the video. I got the impression that there was A LOT more to the story like maybe there was some bad blood going on somewhere and either someone wanted to stick it to someone else or someone didn’t want to work on it and just said the motor was bad and from there no one else really dug into it. If/Why that Sappy guy didn’t check the compression himself is beyond me, if he didn’t I’d imagine he’s kicking him self for not looking further and buying it himself. It’s mind blowing because you got a deal of a lifetime and the value is only going to go up. Not only is that a Supra but it’s a pretty special spec as well. As far as upgrading it the sky is the limit, I’d suggest just enjoying it for a bit before you decide to tear it apart. It’s such a cool car the way it is and personally I don’t see a thing wrong with it other than shining it up. I’d much rather have a Supra over an R34, it’s by far my most favorite JDM legend.

Hey Sam, the story with the shop that told the previous owner the engine was blown could just be an attempt that they made so that maybe one of the workers there would slide an offer to the owner with a small amount of money, and, since they told him it was "blown" maybe they were expecting him to be like "ok the engine is done, I don't want to deal with it, I'll sell it to you." This is just my opinion and it came in my mind because I had a shop trying to f me in the past using this method.

when you drove the supra the other day the engine sounded every healthy, i suspect the previous owner nearly got scammed by the shady shop ideally, i would take the engine out, put fresh parts on the head, new cam gear redo timing, water pump all the good stuff heck even touch the bottom end and change out the pistion for some nice hks ones, put a nice exhaust system and coils and dont judge me r154 trans , thats what i would do to the supra

Definitely a wild story and hands down the shop was out to scam him and get as much out of it as possible.
Luckily it moved on to several owners and now with you. The wiring being faulty obviously is causing the engine to sound and run weird.
But the fuse does tell something was going on what Jeffrey mentioned. Be sure to run down the wiring harness if you didn't already.
Connectors, wires, grounding points etc. And check connectors for rust.
I also don't think anything is wrong with the engine. And as you said, it just needs some new parts with nowadays technology.
E.g. good/better spark plugs, alternator, ignition coils and wiring new fuses. Other supporting mods if you are gonna let it go to the 700 number.
Happy for you man! Enjoy the time with your dream car!

I drive my mkiv daily. I do a 10 mile run to work 5 days a week and shop runs at the weekend with maybe a 20 mile drive for fun on a Sunday so over a year I do less than 4k so I don't see an issue with cars with low usage and bear in mind most wont be used daily like mine.

That slightly higher compression in one of those cylinder indicates one of the 2 outer cylinders may have bad piston rings .

My main guess is this car was purchased by a United States Marine while stationed at Okinawa, probably traded hands with his buddy because he couldn't take it and the car just sat at the shop waiting for a new engine when it was trading hands with military guys that didn't want to pay for the work to be done.

Now at the end of the video! Wow! $12,000!! The Supra is also My Dream Car! Even from a younger age! The Mark 3 was a favorite growing up and I had a friend that had one or two or maybe three! They kept coming up with different ones all the time! Even the old Celica Supra from earlier 80s I think maybe older! It was a rounder car! But was Bad AF!! I’m happy for you, Sam! Great buy!! But you are in Japan and you did get very lucky! The last two owners definitely never got to see the car! I don’t think, at least! And someone just wanted out! And someone ripped off the original buyer! In my opinion! But I may be wrong! But now you showed us the Big Turbo So Now We Want To See It On The Supra!!!!

The only thing you really changed was stopping the turbo getting coolant maybe the turbo seals are bad and it burnt coolant causing the white smoke, it could also foul the o2 sensor and cause it to run really bad making them think it had a hurt motor ?

I have purchased a greedy G40-1150 with a t4 .95 but I'm thinking about selling it and going with a g35-1050 to get a better response. It will be interesting to see what you go with and why.

Throttle open is a myth, never see diff results myself and a couple engine guys recently said it as well. Running engine or not, a comp test will not be the tell-all it's made out to be by youtubers. Still not like it's easy to leak-down an overhead cam engine. I got an engine right now that comp test 160 on a cylinder but it has 50% leak and it's not the valves.

Before watching, I'm holding thumbs that the engine is okay.
From experience, it's probably not though. My old Volvo XC70 drove like a champ, but was low on comp in 3 out of 5 cylinders and it hurt my soul when I did the test.
EDIT: Heck yeah dude! Super pumped for you that the engine has good compression! Leads me to wonder what on earth was wrong with it!
    Good luck Sammit!

I have flipped some cars in the past and some of the diagnosing is terrible from mechanics. One was for a car with low compression thought the engine was toast, was a $70 injector seal later and make $6k on the car.

knew the engine was mint the moment u drived it. by the previous owner scared coz was blowing smoke. would 100% be turbo because as soon as there was no coolant to the turbo it fixed that problem and you didnt touch another thing. the coilpack issue breaking up is common and fixed. my aristo is stock ecu and i have a g40 1150. the stock ecu and cant catch idle. sometimes on stock ecu u are getting to much air in and has a fit. urs has greddy ecu but could be same problem

Sam if the fuel pump fuse looked melted i bet the fuel pump was or is knackered that might have been the problem with the BAD ENGINE diagnosis check your fuel pump and change the fuel pump relay to eliminate that out of the equasion you don't need fuel problems on a high hp engine cheers from down under
