    Had a rule implemented that people weren't allowed to clock in early. I arrived 30 minutes early, pulled out a lawn chair and a book, and sat by the punch clock until my shift started. Most people saw the humor in it, and the ones that didn't couldn't stop me.

      Cus maybe they were still forced to come in early but not clock in or they had no choice due to travel constraints, so why should a company who pays on wage not salary not allowed you 30 mins over time moet companies who are like this are mega corps who are cash rich and wouldn't effect them in the slightest.

    I once worked for company that told me to come in early, check my emails, THEN clock in. Nope. Laws say you get paid to work. Checking company email is work. You want me in early to check email? I clock in. They were not happy when I expressed that to them and casually mentioned the Labor Board might like to know their 'policy'.

      Ha! My friend worked at a place like that. I even interviewed there like 12 years ago and they mentioned having to come in a half-hour early (unpaid) to "deal with e-mails" before starting your shift.

      Keeping up with how best to introduce innovations (if necessary) and where.
      Not going on vacation when you would like, because certain things need to be taken care of.

    this kind of shit is why i started my own business. ii used to work for wells fargo. my boss wanted me at work a HOUR before i clocked in. i asked was i being paid for that hour and when he said “no”, i laughed IN HIS FACE and walked away. i also contacted L & I (labor board here in oregon) because his idiotic ass sent this request in a email as well😂😂😂😂😂
    wells fargo got audited by L & I and they had to pay out MILLIONS in Oregon.
    this happened in the late 90’s

    I worked as a CNA at a nursing home in MT. Management would have a fit if you clocked in one second before shift start, but also reprimand (and dock you) for clocking in one minute late. Between CNA’s, LPN’s, kitchen staff, etc, there were around 30+ staff for the swing shift. We never could get them to understand that 30+ people could not possibly clock in within one minute.
    They also routinely broke MT and fed labor laws, so…

    yep- once had a boss who wanted 30 minutes free to clean the store because when the store is closed she wouldn't be making money. "ok but this is my job so I expect to make money whether you want me here for an open or closed store" .. She also wanted me to do managerial duties when her manager left but didn't want to hire a new manager or make me one, I just needed to do those duties for the same pay and title. Also said "will you go take care of that" referring to the poop on her kid's butt when she brought him to the store. No, no I won't.

    My employer tried this, he asked me to come in 10 minutes early and login to work systems and so I clocked the time. When he said to spend the 10 minutes getting ready for work but to not click the time, I said okay I'm not going to argue with you. Later that day I sent a "just to clarify" email and his whole attitude changed. Needless to say, I now come in and clock in when my shift starts 😂

    Literally got fired for this years ago. The most insane part is that MOST people in the office were doing the same thing. In fact, I learned it from them. I had only been there for 3 months and was clocking in and out the same way as my co-workers, because they were the ones who taught me when and how. Got fired and called a thief, because apparently I was "stealing from the company". Well. The company can keep getting "stolen from" by 90% of its employees as far as I'm concerned, good luck

    Blizzard software tried to say this exact thing, "arrive abt 15 mins early, start all your daily re-installs and get ready, then clock in when your shift starts; you need to do this bc you're basically unable to work while everything is installing"
    If you're giving me orders to complete, then im on the clock, no exceptions.
    They tried to fight me on this so i started arriving 10 seconds before my shift starts. you cant tell me to arrive 15 mins early and NOT clock in.

    For years I used to be at a clinic to work 15 min early and clock in and get stuck when people handed me something or caught me in a room for patient needs. On my review, my boss said I was always late to work. So from then on I arrived no more than 5 min prior to clock in (just in case for traffic) and clock in at time and sit there a moment. Then get up and work. Funny how that person got all the stuff I had been doing those 15 min. Now I only get talked to if Im more than 5 min late clocking in!! 😂

    At my work, hourly staff can clock in 5 mins early unless we ask if you can or want to clock in early. Salary staff, it’s on the honour system so just don’t question anyone. If I work longer one day I’ll leave early another.
    At another job, it was salary and the other girl would show up 25 mins late, take smoke breaks plus her lunch break, so I started taking a “smoke break” and she got mad I was always late from lunch. If you can smoke, I can take a break

    I don’t know why a company can’t just allow you to clock in up to 10mins early and clock out 10 mins early if you do so nothing is overtime OR ILLEGAL. Having a HERD of ppl standing at a clock to punch in between 8-8:01 while ALSO requiring them to get there 10 mins early JUST IN CASE… what a headache

      My former work also wanted us to be available 24/7 with no compensation unless called but with punishment if we didn’t answer a call in 15 minutes. At first they wanted our personal cell numbers (we wouldn’t provide this) then said they would provide cell phones but the company got an overwhelming “no” for an answer.
      Prior to this I had taken a pay cut to transfer departments because I hated the department I was in. Later on the company tried to force my new department to work in my old department as “needed”. (Read: poor planning by management). They didn’t want to pay the full hourly wage of someone in that department, just a percent increase in our usual hourly wage.
      When that didn’t work, they forced employees to choose to be “in office on call” for the other department for a slight rise in pay but those of us who chose not to do that had our wage frozen. After that, people seldom got called to the second department and the rest of us were permanently stuck in our wage bracket. This was then written into the next contact. New hires had to agree to work in either department but at an hourly rate that was less than that of people permanently in that department.
      Note that you had to have the training and job skills identical to those making more and the job was the same, just the pay was less. This was the companies way around the contract.
      Most of this foolishness is a power move. Just like working from home.
      During the pandemic my departments “numbers” for work being done, attendance, etc went up significantly. That didn’t keep the company from dragging us into the office to work, in small groups for 2-3 days a month per group. Maybe the numbers were too good and showed how useless middle and lower management actually is.

      These lawyers are worth their weight in gold. Be sure to make notes discreetly as soon after something is said or done, with date and time of occurrence and what was said or done. Keep it short, name names and make it legible. This will actually count in court.
      There are also some non profit organizations who will help you.

    While a little exaggerated, these clips definitely highlight how many workers (especially hourly workers) face horrible supervisors and/or managers all the time. Document EVERYTHING. As one of these clips mentions, send a 'confirmation e-mail' after every single encounter like this. Employers may not require, or even ALLOW hourly employees to work off the clock. Hourly employees cannot be asked or allowed to "volunteer" their time. Keep records.

      Honestly, there's a simple way to avoid this. When you go in for a job interview, always say you want a supervisor to lead by example when they ask what you want in a boss.
      Real talk, I dont mind getting in 10 minutes early and not clocking in until 9 if I see my boss busting their butt. . . then again, I might be a little bias because I just got a raise after having to cover for people like the woman on the employee in this video. If they play games with you, learn how to beat them at their own game.

      Be there 15 minutes early, unpaid, to boot and get everything set up and ready to take the first call at the time your shift is supposed to start.
      Yup. Been there. I’d clock in maybe a minute before shift then have everything ready by 5 minutes after my shift start time. They hated me (TFB) but couldn’t do anything about it without getting in trouble with the government.
      I’ve been in great unions, this wasn’t one of them. I stopped going to meetings. My voice didn’t count.

    At my previous job, we were all quite laidback with minor overtime.
    Field where you learned everyday so it was win/win.
    Then some dipsh1t upstairs decided we had to clock in / out precisely everyday. For remote/intervention work it was utterly impractical but after some complaint we did.
    At the end of the first full month… the higher up -was fired- /had to take care of family matters when the total bill to pay overtime was released…

We have better training and safety protections. We have a contract that protects us from the kind of silliness in the video. 'UNITED WE BARGAIN. DIVIDED WE BEG' is our motto for a reason.
      You pay dues so you have representation in bargaining and job disputes.

    Employers who pull this are the worst. I've seen it twice. I never obeyed this rule. One insisted that staff had to be in office from 8.45 because the phone lines open at 9am=5pm. But, like, why not stagger the shifts and have some people start at 8.30 then, and some people start 9.30-5.30 so no one has to get stuck on a call at 4.55 when they're about to finish for the day? So many people just go along with this. It's nonsense. I turned up at 8.58. I am logged on for 9am. And I get all my work done! Another employer insisted on it for literally no reason. My train arrives at 9am, I'd get into the office at 9.03 (I was opposite the train station.). Take it up with the railway system! Otherwise: What. Is. The. Problem? I don't answer phones, most of my responses need to be more considered than instant yes/no. Who cares??? WHO ACTUALLY CARES???

    I had one employer who wouldn't allow you any overtime, so you had to put on your timecard your actual arrival time, and the office manager's desk was in view of the door so he'd know if you fudged it. Also, they wouldn't allow you to be late, and if you were early you couldn't wait inside because they were afraid you could get the labor department after them if you were in the building and not billing them for your time. So, if you arrived early, you had to wait outside. In winter. In Boston. And you had to step in at 9:00am *to the minute*, because they'd threatened that if you arrived at 8:59 or 9:01 you'd be fired. (So you had to have a watch and regularly make sure it was set to the company clock.)

    I've worked for a company that said it was ok to clock in 10 mins early or clock out 10 mins late. I did both. We were always under scheduled with a maximum work week of 32 hours a week. Exploiting this one rule added another hour and a half to my paycheck every week.

    I've only worked at 1 place like that.....I would come in early and eat my breakfast in the breakroom and then when 8am hit I clocked in and started my day......that tried that 10 min crap but I wasn't going to have it.......I've only known call centers to try and implement that rule since they want your computer up and all you software ready to go because those phones are cut on at 8am on the dot......it took literally 3 secs to log in and pull up the one absolutely necessary program and the others could wait.....so stupid, I will never work at a call center again

      Same experience here. Call centers are the absolute worst place to work.
      One of the IT guys was under my desk fixing a problem when he cut his hand and started bleeding like crazy. He quickly turned white and I went to help him get to a restroom. My supervisor saw me and chewed my a$$ out for leaving my desk. (The guy was seriously bleeding). I quickly told her what happened and she said “I don’t care, that’s his problem. Get back to your desk and take calls”. She was a real sweetheart.
      Side note: someone else not from the call center helped him and took him to get stitches. He was ok in the end.

    At UPS they have a single clock-in location. When they did this id end up in a line of 12 people who had to manually punch in their numbers. I wouldnt be physically able to clock in until 5-15 minutes after if I was in the back of said line. They still want you there 15 minutes early tho so they get a head count

    I was about 5 minutes late once and I got lectured that I had to be at my desk, logged in, and ready to go right at 9:00.

      My employer tried this and as cruddy as my union was, they put a stop to it. Getting logged in etc is part of the job so pay is required.

    I’ve never worked anywhere that didn’t insist that I clock in as soon as I possibly could and pay me for every single minute of work, even if it was OT. I don’t know where these companies are that are so big on violating labor laws but I never met any of them.

    Unless it is stated in my employment contract that I arrive early without pay, you must pay me if you require me to be at work early. That is law.

    At my last job the clock was rigged in such a way that it would always set to the next quarter of an hour.
    So if you clocked in at 9:46 it would get set to 10:00. And if you were 1 min late it would set the time to 10:15.
    And of course for clocking out it was the other way around. Clock out at 16:59 you would lose the last 14 min you worked. (Clock would set to 16:45)

    No, you should be ready to work at the start of your shift - used the loo, gotten your coffee, and logged in, ready to take your first client. Start time is start time, not get ready to start time. Conversely, the last five minutes of your day are for closing out your programs. Welcome to standard operating procedure. Pulling into the parking lot and/or walking into the building isn't part of your job; it's part of your commute.

    But you should be at your station and ready to work when your shift begins. Not coming in, setting stuff down, getting your drink, opeining your computer. I bet you at quitting time you’re out the door right on time, so that means you’ve closed your computer, gather your things while you should still be working And yes I was a business owner, however , I follow this practice when I worked for other people

    You're explaining it wrong. We want you here 10 minutes before so you can get yourself sorted out... grab a coffee, go to the restroom, hang up your jacket, and clock in at 10 when your shift begins. If you arrive at 10 and take care of all that, you will be late because you can not clock in before you do that.
