And if Veronica was to get hurt during this "work event" she probable wouldn't be covered by her work's insurance.

I’m pretty sure her insurance would cover it and she might also be eligible for worker’s compensation, unless the participants signed a waiver excluding WC. I’m not an insurance expert or a Human Resources expert.

Insurance might but not worker’s comp. They are not making it a work activity. If it were, she would be paid because slavery is illegal everywhere.
My job does activities like this and they do things like paying a half day with the expectation you will stay 6hrs or something like that but they do not stop you from leaving early.

My friend was a volunteer youth leader at her church. She seriously injured her ankle during the summer picnic. She needed multiple pins and several surgeries over the course of 12 months. The church’s insurance refused the claim because she was a volunteer and it happened at a city park. The head pastor told his agent that they had been a good client for more than a decade with no claims. Not only that, but many, many of the congregants had policies with them since he had recommended their company. He promised this agent that EVERY SINGLE PERSON would cancel their policy if the insurance did not cover her injury in full! So of course they saw the light and changed their decision.

"It's voluntary" but "we put you down and were counting on you."
Pick one. It's either voluntary, in which case you don't get to volunteer me; or it's mandatory, in which case I get paid and you are free to count on me. Can't be both.

I actually like my coworkers and I’ll stop by for 5 minutes to say hello if I’m in the neighborhood. But no fucking way will I show up to events like “company kickball tournaments” unless there’s money in it.
I mean I don’t even participate in work events when I’m there unless it’s mandatory.

You know, if I'm not at work, I can say exactly how I feel, and you can't do anything to me, right?" I was never asked to go to a bonding exercise again.

As I got older I didn’t want to attend outside events from work. I would see these people 40+ hours a week. Once my boss asked me why I wasn’t going to the annual holiday party which was taking place in Boston. I said I am not driving an hour away in the middle of winter at night by myself to see people I see everyday. Have a nice time.

My last company used to have The Company Picnic on a weekend somewhere (public park, etc.), and I was repeatedly asked year after year why I never went to one. I just said I had "commitments" and couldn't. I was never "in yo' face" about it, but I did make it clear that weekends were sketchy for me and that it's unlikely I could make it, not when I had weekend chores and stuff to do. Even offered that if I could get a free day off during the week to catch-up, I'd be happy to attend, but no one took me up on it.

I worked for a company that put on a company weekend Camp Out and Pick Nick. They didn't frown on you if you didn't come. I went the only year I worked there. They let every one off early Thursday. You could roll up and set up camp at a reserved rented out campground by the river in the mountains. They put on two large bbq events over the weekend and made breakfast on Saturday. They gave you a paid day off on Friday just so you could make it out. They went the extra mile if they asked you out on the weekend..

@@russellstewart5414 Curious.... would most have preferred a paid day off? Or free beer and dogs. Our employer allows weird dress up, taco Tuesday monthly (tacos in and made by the dietary folks....not delivered so just any regular day basically), opportunities to hoola hoop and run an obstacle course in water in the parking lot...so many have to park down the block that day).
Being mandated to pulling as many as 20 hours, if someone is out, is common. Being called in on one's weekend off is way too common. Screw tacos and free soda poured from 2L bottles, strange outfits, and hoola hooping for 30 minutes. They need to be getting travelers to be available for filling the holes that could swallow a ship. Of course, it's an area people don't naturally desire to come to, especially in winter (The Upper peninsula of Michigan), so they need to up that financial offering. Of course, they COULD try paying better than I was paid FIVE years ago at Mo small town facility. $16 for CNAs and $35 for top end RN, BSN positions....but THAT would eat into the $$$ for the managing board and medical director (almost never even enters the building.)
I'm management and think it's atrocious how these upper management people and the union are in bed together to keep profits high and costs low to benefit about 6-9 people, and make work a miserable experience for 200 others. Five days of paid vacation a year.... that you can't even take ONE of for the first full year, and $1000/month insurance to add ONE child and not able to add a spouse is ridiculous. It's like this all over....the unions now mandate what federal law forbids employers to require. The union requires it, so the employer doesn't have to. Since you aren't employed by the union (even though one MUST be union to work there... except management), they get away with it. It's one of FOUR decent sized employers in the county that pays an adult wage.... along with a mill, the hospital, and the schools.
Pizza, beer, dogs, hoola hoops, and weird dress up days seem pretty pitiful as incentives for hard work.... except the beer, it sounds like Spirit Week in highschool. I don't recall being as abused in highschool as employees are these days. That's for kids.... adults might prefer days off, shorter days occasionally, higher pay, MUCH better/cheaper insurance, and other things that actually improve their lives. I'm not actually angry at you.... just wondering if your fellow employees would prefer MY suggestions for employee appreciation over free dogs and beer at a game on their regular day off.

I never went to after work things. I worked for Lush. Great company but the staff in my shop were a clique and I have always been the guy who didn't fit in. Autism.
When the Christmas party was scheduled they just expected me to go. I did not.
The first 2 Christmases I told them "I was going to, but something came up".
By the 3rd or 4th Christmas, my narcissistic boss (nice most of the time, until she needed someone to lash out at) came to me one day in December...
"I'll only ask you this once: are you coming to the Christmas party this year?"
    "no"
...and never a follow up question as to why.
The reason is that they're not really my friends, I don't feel wanted, I feel like they tolerate me at work, and I'm not gonna give them the chance to tell me what they really think of me once they have had enough alcohol in their systems.
I sat home alone instead because I'd rather do that than have to deal with pretending to belong.

It reminds me of one office job I had many years ago. One of the managers was angry at me for politely refusing to go for a weekend integration (I had only just started). He tried to sway me with argument that he already had paid for all the stuff, that he had all the invoices, blah, blah... I remember saying "yes" after some time, just to say "no" (via sms) a day or two before the trip, and do not regret it for many reasons, including health issues at that time of my life.

The company I work for are having a day out where staff get the day off to attend a venue and eat, drink and be merry. If you don't want to go (or can't go for other reasons) then they expect us to work, I'm no lawyer but I feel this is a big problem as paying for people to party and expecting others to work sounds flaky to say the least (this is UK by the way).

I used to work with a team of people who only ever used to get together in the office for meetings. Once a quarter I just used to say I was going out to dinner and a drink. No pressure to come, I just liked an excuse to go out without my wife. The only thing that ruined it was our manager started to turn up, brought his wife once which seemed to open it up to other wives. Then two people decided they would organise a couple of 'events' which split the group up and people started to complain about the few of us who were out for just dinner and a drink.
People started moaning about it so I started going out on my own which is what is was all about in the first place. I don't want to be organised by me or anyone else when I'm out for dinner and a drink.
Like your work, wish this kind of training had been around when I went from woodworking to IT.

Aside from how ridiculous the requests are to do out of work activities, the comment about Florida, a hundred and fortynine thousand degrees just made me giggle because, yes, it's insanely hot.
On the darker side, my son in law's sister died of heat stroke in the parking lot of her work place, during her lunch break, during a heat wave in Kansas City a few years ago. Word of warning: if it feels too hot, GTFO! You cannot know how much heat you can handle until you reach the point where you just can't handle it!

In this era with families were people share custody it is a really bad idea to think you can “volunteer” (aka force) so one to work in a day off. No one is going to mess up and possibly loose a kid to play kickball with the boss for free!
