Yeah, that line got me triggered hard AF as a long-time G3 player (in fact, I've just completed it doing almost all quests with like 12 remaining some weeks ago; I'm still loving the hell out of it!)
So quick mage advice: You dont really need stamina at all And you need less hp than a melee fighter But because mages suck at the start you will fight a lot melee. Dont get a lot of spells, because you will only use the key effectiv ones anyway...for the rest there are scrolls. I would get: Fireball, ice lance, summon golem, ice explosion, meteor or fire ring, and maybe fire rain. Timebubble can be nice too. Learn water or fire mage or both. From my experience: Summon golem>summon demon, because the demon is too big to go through doors and blocks you from shooting fireballs at the opponent too much. Staffs really suck...dont use them. The good magic staffs with nice skills can only be obtained at the end of the game and by that time you already have the skills. Learn sword with shield. The def bonus of the shield even applies when you carry it on the back and the same applies for sword bonuses. Like the element sword mana bonus.

Also, if you are R E A L L Y patient, you can actually get around 200 or 210 (if my memory serves me well) Ancient Knowledge WITHOUT investing a single point in it, only by reading every bookstand and stone pillar in Varant and picking up all the stone tablets you come across. Granted, this WILL take HOURS just hunting them down, but you can, technically, have 200+ AK on level 0 before you even effectively start the game.
@@dimonletov there are various teachers that can teach you to become a specific mage. But not all fire mages can teach you to become one same for dark and watermages. I think you can look it up in the wiki.

It's been quite a long time since I have posted anything, so I wasn't extremely engaged in the Gothic community. I see all of your comments and appreciate every single one. I actually have 3 scripts written for some videos, however due to some technical issues I am unable to record the needed footage for the said videos. (I will eventually figure it out.) In my personal life I'm going through college application process as of now and it's a little hard to balance some things, therefore I don't want to promise anything I can't accomplish. All I know is this engagement that the Gothic community has is quite spectacular and I am extremely proud to have been able to provide some content and be an entertainer for you guys. There's a shrine to Beliar in the forest north of the road just outside Cape Dun. The best way to play a mage is: get AK to 250, learn Mana Regen, win. You should only learn one attack spell and raise your mana to 120 (so that you can cast 2 fully charged basic attack spells for every mana potion you drink) and you shouldn't invest in any other skill until you get mana regen. Buy tablets from collectors and read books to help with this, it is entirely possible to get 250 AK by the level 10 if you're lucky with vendors (or abuse save/load before talking to them), and 250 AK by level 20 should be entirely doable without that much of a hassle. Just do quests and put all your points to AK. After you get mana regeneration, you win the game. If you use alternate balancing, you only need 200AK, but the skill itself will cost you way more and you'll need to invest in mana to make your mana regenerate faster, without alternate balancing, all you need is that 120 mana, 250AK, mana regen and you can pretty much destroy everything the game has to offer with little to no challenge.
I feel like there is no middle ground. Without AB it is as OP as you say but you also lose all the other good AB perks. With AB I think they went waaay too hard on mages. I played a mage with AB and tried to do the usual as fast as I could but in the end I ended struggling for most of the game and by the time I actually could learn mana regen, I cleared most of the map. Not enough mana, not enough mana potions and swinging a very weak staff... Sure, much later in the game I was slinging the usual spells and destroying the Orc camps left and right but the journey with AB was not really worth it... Mana regen also is not AS useful as without AB as you pointed out.
If you want to play as a mage and it's not your first playthrough, look up the Gothic 3 water mage guide. it works great and it's basically a "run around the map collecting AK points and get mana regeneration at level 1 basically" then you return to Ardea and start the game :) It's down right OP so do this after you've safely and legit played through the game at least once.
I wouldn't recommend that with alternate balancing though since ancient knowledge determines your magic damage and learning it from teachers costs 2sp per 1ak after you reach 250 (little trick, get it up to 249, then learn 5 points so you get 4 of the more expensive points for half the price) I personally prefer having progression and more skill points to spend, your preferances may differ though
Also it would be good idea to point the cloesest place where you can learn Adanos spell which is at druid Porgan. He can teach you how to summon golem and that can be useful as hell at the begining.
2 things I'd add: 1. one of the most op spells (in terms of requirements, mana cost, and effect) most people forget/never think about is fog. cast it to create an impenetrable barrier around you, nothing can move into its aoe so you're free to walk a step closer and go for fire/ice wave or explosion. archers usually can't hit you either but some occasionally bug and continue to shoot; just take those ones out first and you're golden. 2. most op end game mage strategy imo: army of darkness and ice explosion. the hammerclan mine is a pathetic joke with just those two. yeet a fireball to engage in combat, summon, let chaos commence, throw in an explosion every once in a while. rinse and repeat once your army is weakened/scattered. you can walk aroun the back of the battlefield taking out mages if a few melee enemies bunch up, walk over and let them fly. it actually makes you feel like the avatar of beliar and like the grind was worth it

If u you dont want to hate yourself playing mage, get the "Magic Mod" that reduces the cast time of all the big spells (like Flame Wave, Word spells, time bubble) and spells like Fire Rain are now cast on a enemey instead on you (so you have a chance of casting it from afar without being interrupted). Without the mod, 50% of all spells are useless because you will never get them off, because a single crossbow bolt or molerat will interrupt your casting.
Few advices Buy staff from Narkan in Gotha Go to Vengard for mana regeneration and mage robe First five levels invest in ancient knowlege then learn quickly fe from Sebastian and fireball fom Innos shrine in Ardea then Ancient knowledge to 250 After 250 Ancient knowledge use stone tablets and lecterns
The frustrating thing about Gothic 3 is the coolest spells are locked behind an end game choice. Time bubble is one of the most enjoyable spells ever to play around with, but most players will never experience it. It's so amazing during a city battle to cast time bubble on a gateway and then start dropping flame wave after flame wave as they try coming out.
I would say this guide is mainly suitable for CP 1.74 and below. 1.75 yeah I guess, but your AK has to be above 400 to be considered OP and it's not worth the grind. For those on the CP 1.75 patch for the game. Just grind to 250 ak to get mana regen and that's really all you need. Get learn quickly as well that's of course the best perk you can get IMO.
One thing I always asked my myself why they had magical staffs in the game if you could not shoot magic from it. Staffs indeed and unfortunately sucks. For mage beginners I always suggest Fireball and IceSpear. Although the most powerful spells in game would be Firerain and Army of Darkness

I know this is maybe a year late but with magical staffs you can block spellst (like arrows with a shield). It drains mana instead of your stamina and is kinda crap.. but you CAN do it (equip the staff and draw your spell, then rightclick for the magic block)
Maybe you should Mention some Breakpoints like having 375 Ancient Knowlegede + Fire Mage Perk on Easy to 1 Shot Normal Orcs, Skeletons, Zombies, Snapper, and other Creatures which grant +200 xp and below, you will also 2shot everything else except for 500+ XP creatures (where you should charge your Fireball) . On normal difficulty it should be 750 AK and on Hard 1500 (which you really cant get but maybe 750). On Alt. Balance the Mana regeneration scales with your current max. Mana if i remember so if you have 200 Mana you should get 2 Mana/s, without you get straight 5 Mana/s .. wich is very powerful .. on my 100% Speedrun i just try to get this Perk asap. because it will speedup the entire game.
@@AdioAurel the most glaring ones are polish and balancing for stability and polish, they fixed 95% of bugs, 99% of game/quest breaking ones and reduced crashes to a minimum (reference: when I first played without patch it would crash at least every 1-1.5 hours, since I patched it I've had 3 in over 300 hours - yes, I play gothic too much, what of it? xD). as for in game balance, they added an alternate balancing mode so you actually have to be tactical about skill point investment, and an alternate combat system and enemy AI which fucks you over royally if you just spam attack like you were encouraged to in the non patched game (but has its own share of problems; it's great in 1v1 but group fights - which this game is heavily leaning towards - are a headache inducing clusterfuck) there's also some quality of life improvements like quickloot. it's definitely worth playing with cp installed; I'd recommend doing a raw vanilla cp playthrough then maybe thinking about installing some other things like content mod, magic rebalancing and whatever else may tickle your fancy.

my question would be if its smart to start putting points into mage stuff even though you are lvl 50 and put almost all your points into dexterity until now
with alternate balancing, not really, no... the best course of action is probably to either reload a save where you're level 20-30 so you get a proper hybrid build going since a mage build is extremely heavy on skill points; or just restart with a build in mind and take a fresh route through the world. if you don't have ab on though, go balls to the walls; if you do a lot you'll probably end the game with lvl 70-80, without ab you'll be good on skill points
I think the AK thing was poorly made, my mage had 842 AK and still couldn't 1 shot a bison or a sandcrawler with a normal attack. For example an uncharged fireball / ice lance (without holding down left click).

Here's how to play a mage: Get a basic damage spell and mana regeneration. Divide the rest of your points between Health and AK. You win the game. With alternative balancing it's a bit different, because you'll want to invest in Mana as well to increase the effectiveness of your mana regeneration, but otherwise it's the same thing. All you really need is mana regen and the basic damage spell, such as fireball or lightning bolt. Don't waste a single point in ANYTHING else (except to get your basic damage spell) before you have gotten both learn quickly and mana regeneration. Absolutely don't waste a single second with anything that has to do with melee.
yeah you only forgot that this is gothic so it doesn't really matter at all if you waste some points for melee or didn't get quck learning asap it just delays you becoming invincible for a couple levels at best
@@tequillaaa It delays you for as many levels as you've wasted on melee. If you only waste a couple levels, then it delays you a couple of levels, if you waste more then it delays you more. This is gothic and your LP are limited, so if you waste enough on pointless crap like stamina, you might gimp your character forever.
@@khatack you still only need mana regen and a basic attack spell to kite and kill any enemy in the game so it really doesn't matter how efficient you skill because of how the magic works in gothic 3 it's just getting easier with every point spend towards magic

it was disabledcin the original game, the community patch brought it back. you need to choose the path of beliar, after that you can learn it at any beliar shrine (make sure you learn all spells you want which aren't on beliar's page first though. once you've decided on a path, the other two will no longer be available -although I'm not 100%sure if going for adanos locks both beliar and inno, I'd have to check, it's very likely though).
If you get confused on how to be a mage in G3, then there's something seriously wrong with you. It's the worlds simplest goddamn game mechanically, and mage is the easiest goddamn character to play in it.
Most useless guide ever. And overall wrong. Mage is the easiest Class of them all. Learn one spell and use it for 80% for the rest of the game. Done. Archery and Swordmanship is much harder.

When i was ending gothic 3, my fireball was an assault rifle and my Rain of fire can be used 6 Times!

fire rain isn't that strong really.
Firerain and Army you can only get thorugh the main quest and they come super late in the game.
At this point you dont really need them anymore, sad.

This was community patched version of the game. The vanilla version is just impossible to enjoy.

there's also some quality of life improvements like quickloot.
it's definitely worth playing with cp installed; I'd recommend doing a raw vanilla cp playthrough then maybe thinking about installing some other things like content mod, magic rebalancing and whatever else may tickle your fancy.

my question would be if its smart to start putting points into mage stuff even though you are lvl 50 and put almost all your points into dexterity until now
with alternate balancing, not really, no...
the best course of action is probably to either reload a save where you're level 20-30 so you get a proper hybrid build going since a mage build is extremely heavy on skill points; or just restart with a build in mind and take a fresh route through the world.
if you don't have ab on though, go balls to the walls; if you do a lot you'll probably end the game with lvl 70-80, without ab you'll be good on skill points
I think the AK thing was poorly made, my mage had 842 AK and still couldn't 1 shot a bison or a sandcrawler with a normal attack. For example an uncharged fireball / ice lance (without holding down left click).

Here's how to play a mage: Get a basic damage spell and mana regeneration. Divide the rest of your points between Health and AK. You win the game. With alternative balancing it's a bit different, because you'll want to invest in Mana as well to increase the effectiveness of your mana regeneration, but otherwise it's the same thing. All you really need is mana regen and the basic damage spell, such as fireball or lightning bolt. Don't waste a single point in ANYTHING else (except to get your basic damage spell) before you have gotten both learn quickly and mana regeneration. Absolutely don't waste a single second with anything that has to do with melee.
yeah you only forgot that this is gothic so it doesn't really matter at all if you waste some points for melee or didn't get quck learning asap it just delays you becoming invincible for a couple levels at best
@@tequillaaa It delays you for as many levels as you've wasted on melee. If you only waste a couple levels, then it delays you a couple of levels, if you waste more then it delays you more. This is gothic and your LP are limited, so if you waste enough on pointless crap like stamina, you might gimp your character forever.
@@khatack you still only need mana regen and a basic attack spell to kite and kill any enemy in the game so it really doesn't matter how efficient you skill because of how the magic works in gothic 3 it's just getting easier with every point spend towards magic
@@tequillaaa Well, in some of the bigger fights it can mean the difference between having to jump around for several hours or just 15 minutes. I don't know if you've noticed but this game kinda sucks ass.

it was disabledcin the original game, the community patch brought it back.
you need to choose the path of beliar, after that you can learn it at any beliar shrine (make sure you learn all spells you want which aren't on beliar's page first though. once you've decided on a path, the other two will no longer be available -although I'm not 100%sure if going for adanos locks both beliar and inno, I'd have to check, it's very likely though).

If you get confused on how to be a mage in G3, then there's something seriously wrong with you. It's the worlds simplest goddamn game mechanically, and mage is the easiest goddamn character to play in it.
Most useless guide ever. And overall wrong.
Mage is the easiest Class of them all.
Learn one spell and use it for 80% for the rest of the game. Done.
Archery and Swordmanship is much harder.
