It has recently been discovered that the skybox is a city named Shibam
People have been speculating for a long time that it's from Casares, but now we know it's not.

My biggest issues with Wet-Dry World is that it felt unfinished and it felt like a test level that ended up in a world
There are so many things in WDW that are only in WDW, the arrow lifts and the things that shift the water heights
From what I've heard, there are a lot of assets used in the town area that come directly from the Zelda 64 beta. I'm sure there are comparisons out there which show it better.
Idk what all textures are, but at least the doors in the town are straight from Zelda 64
Also right as I started replying, plainrock124 uploaded a video relating to Zelda, timing lol
And that's exactly why i always loved it. Same with some of the bowser levels, there's nothing organic about it.
But if you look at it like it's a test level in-universe for the water-level-setting technology, it all starts to make sense. It makes sense to have a mock town to test flooding. It makes sense to have the random layout, to take place in the middle of nowhere and have all these mechanical enemies. It's basically like the Abstergo Facility in Portal, and I love it.
The hazy maze song fits well in this map becuase when you go into the town the song changes to a more eerie version. Do love the effort keep it up.
I found WDW creepy af as a kid and that's why I would spend hours there. This whole game felt like such a mystery to 4 year old me and I adored that
4yo me didn't spend time thinking about this, I eas just mad because *I* wanted to play Mario 64ds but it was my brothers game.
I was 6 when I got the game and same; WDW was always my favorite level. Other creepy areas to me were the castle courtyard, the Peach-to-Bowser painting change, the cloud in Tall, Tall Mountain -- I found the the maze with the moon and such to be very otherworldly -- Lethal Lava Land was grim, Shifting Sand Land was grim, the mirror room was bizarre -- the secret aquarium was beautiful as was the Jolly Roger Bay room itself. Love this game to death.
The maze with the moon..?
@@Yoshomay typo; I meant slide ( Mysterious Mountainside) lol. Sorry about that
Have you solved that mystery yet
You need to ask yourself something about this level: what exactly IS it? Every other level has some kind of theme or context, BOB is a battlefield, HMC is a cave, there's something you can compare it to in real life. WDW doesn't have any context provided for it, it's just... a level. The most context you're given as that there's a town in it, which just makes it more confusing than anything.
Maybe some sort of ancient city, destroyed by the rising water
Reasonable ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
what abt botw and tiny-huge island

What are these replies
So, you’ve basically turned it into the Wet Dry World from the Got Milk commercial.
Nice!
Yeah like, cmon the got milk wet dry world is way less unsettling
You can see the got milk wet dry world skybox is the bob omb battlefield skybox and not that creepy sunken city
Oh interesting, never noticed that
Wet Dry world but it's an abandoned cave
That's just begging to have camera issues
@@Yoshomay wasn't it like that before?
@@eduardoaguero1220 the Mario 64 camera and interiors go together like me and woman, they don't like each other
@@Yoshomay good
@@eduardoaguero1220 what
I have heard so many people say how uncomfortable WDW made them when they played it, I always thought the water mechanics were super cool and I also loved the level design and how it feels kinda like a test room, I was more terrified of Peach's castle itself, I always imagined I would find something that wasn't supposed to be there because it was so empty and quiet, nothing but the music that loops forever to no end
this not-creepy WDW gives me some vibes like Tidal Tempest Zone (past version) from sonic CD
The snow levels and dry dry desert are way more creepy
How is ccm and sl creepy
@@Yoshomay idk to me it fells so alone and like I'm lost in the middle of no where
Oh wait I just reread this.
It's shifting sand land. Dry dry desert is from pape lol
@@Yoshomay oh yeah ddd is mkdd
Hecc u it's from pape not mk
actually wet dry world was going to have different music than the hazy maze cave theme
I'm sure tttm thi ttc and rr were all going to also but didn't due to time constraints
i really wonder why they made that skybox for WDW, like it's only used in this level and it's way more specific than the other ones. i dont get creeped out at all by WDW, but i can see why people find the skybox and hidden village spooky, so i really wanna know where they got those ideas from.
i mean, the whole level is really strange too-
Idk
Most of the textures in the game are cropped and scaled images from elsewhere so idk why they a: picked that place in Spain out of anywhere, and b: why they made it flooded
Possibly for the lore implacations, or so the player will associate the skybox with the flooded town idk
@@Yoshomay
well yeah, it makes perfect sense why they made it. it's to give you an idea of what the world is about. it's wet-dry world so they probably thought, 'what if we put a place on land underwater?'
but still it feels weird, because it's the only skybox that isn't just like a nameless area. the rest of them are kinda just the sky with maybe a few small details
I think it's because they wanted to make WDW look like an actual city, as a toad actually mentions a city and theres a sign in WDW calling the place a city
The whole idea is that this level is supposed to be Atlantis.
Is there any official confirmation?
I am surprised nobody else has mentioned this, but I had an egg.
many people have, but youtube has been deleting all "i had an egg comments", including over half the comments i get. ig youtube didnt flag yours as, spam..? because you included more than that
What happened to it? Did you give it to Wesker or something?
?
I know sm64 reuses textures so much, but wet dry world always seems super bland because of that reason. Giving it a more "water level" feel definitely changes the final product. Very fun
Hazy maze cave music fits fine. But original song with Dire fire docks music is really scary
what?!? as a kid and now i loved wdw, favourite area in mario 64
1:19 That part of the skybox right above Mario's head on the left side looks like a penguin or some other type of bird sleeping on it's back.
Interesting
i find a lot of CGI from that era has that feel to it...like YTV short circuits etc
Whenever I think of 90s cgi I think of a movie my 8th grade science teacher showed us and it was the worst thing ever. Yeah it's def improved
I think the level is really meant to be based on those floating cities you see in Italy, and the enemies ARE the inhabitants of the town. The negative emotional aura everyone talks about is unintentional.
You never know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It was always my favourite level
Its unsettling sure but people are putting unnessicary fear into what is essentially a flooded yemen
Nice video Yosho, keep on gaming my brotha!
I feel like I still prefer the underwater city vibe to this new one, the new one feels like JRB 2.
You still did a nice job. ⭐
I have a link to the full song in the description because others also wanted it
3:14 too bad I like it! I want to hear more of that!
I could make a full version of the song if you want

part of the melody is hard to hear because i didn't mess with volume, maybe I should've idk
This is why I avoid killing too many enemies in video games. They just don’t make the atmosphere so creepy
Idk the skeeters make wdw more creepy to me. They're just unsettling, like scuttle bugs but water and I don't like stuff like that irl at all
@@Yoshomayalso the fact that skeeters design changed like 5 times doesnt help either
Unless its a level with friendly npcs
Really good video man, keep up the good content👍
Hello, I see that you have done some incredible modding in order to change the game in a way that feels less creepy and more welcoming. Which is nice though despite the fact that I have never played the original I have played the new collection pack a bit, and I have watched the iceberg videos and I found the game to be charming in its incomplete way. Sure, creating a more complete version of the game would be cool, it's just that I feel the incomplete spooky vibe it has has the potential to be a neat series of games, just like Sunshine or Galaxy.
Also, I have read your description and I just want to talk about how you have described yourself. If that makes you feel uncomfortable, we could always talk about the modification process, if it interests you more.
I've literally never thought it was creepy. What's wrong with y'all?
I'm pathetic and I find a lot of stuff creepy, like the main castle
It's a recent trend to be scared of Mario 64
I've been creeped out since I got it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It's pronounced "Kha - Sah - Res."
"Ca" like "cattle"
"sa" like "sun"
"res" like "tes" in "rattles" but without the "l" 😂
As if I'm able to pronounce English words let alone stuff from a language I don't know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Thx tho
@@Yoshomay No worries, it's not your fault for not being used to that language. But, as an advice, people feel better if you make research to find the right pronunciation of a word in foreign language.
@@anak_kucing101 ye, back when I uploaded this I would just write what was on my mind and boom that's the script.
You see, I'm better nowadays; I'll think about editing some parts
WDW being creepy was one of the big appeals to me as a kid. It's a lesson on how to achieve a subtle atmosphere without going overboard.
It’s not just creepy, it’s the negative aura
When I was a kid this stage made me feel nauseous and I guess it’s because of the environment and the song
3:44 this would sound more creepy if Nintendo added that's soundtrack to the original game
for some reason wet dry world makes me comfortable it looks likes a city
Tf kind of city are you living in (unless you're talking about the town)
I found you, faker! (we have the same yt name lol) For real tho, this looks real nice, good job!
Hecc, uhhhh, how long have you had the name yosho
@@Yoshomay i'd say since september 2019, it's a derivative of yoshi and it's what my ex called me because i apparently looked like beeg yoshi to her, i didn't even know your channel existed until now! But great content, i'll definetly subscribe!
I've had the username yoshomay since around that time lol. I was close to changing it devwmberish 2019, but many people grew fondness over the name so I just kept it lol
I honestly don't know why people think this stage has some sort of negative emotional aura. Imo they all ratchet
Cus it's unsettling
Jolly Roger bay is also gloomy though.
Wow you really did it! 🤩
Nah I don't clickbait
A version of that Super Mario Land song you had at the end would have been a good fit.
Honestly didn't think of that, just thinking of the remix someone has already made idk how well it would've fit, but either way it's better than the original.
(The song is muda kingdom btw)
Hello! I enjoyed watching the video but something tickles me. What is the font you use?
Scrolling though the comment section apparently the reply I made never was posted, good job youtube
It's press start 2p sorry for being a month late ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@Yoshomay tysm! :D Dw it's all fine.
WDW is creepy in design and looks, Not in music though
The music isn't creepy on it's own, but you're playing the game on your own with the lights off it's kinda scary
A lot of music is reused in sm64 due to hardware limitations I’m assuming
prob more to do with time. sm64 was rushed and the file size is 8mb and n64 carts can go up to 64 if they want.
@@Yoshomay it was rushed?
nice you use windows 7 mad respect
I switched to 11 earlier today lol. But yeah 10 is a pos
@@Yoshomay 11 isnt much better based on what my friends say since it seems like a stripped win10 with more ads and bloatware
personally im sticking with 10 even after it stops receiving updates since i already disabled them and im doing just fine plus i have a windows 7 ui mod
Yes but at least 11 has a good looking ui and is way faster than the emabreaisng mess that 10 is.
@@Yoshomay Subjective lol. I tried W11 for like 3 hours - NEVER again with that weird-ass UI lmao
@@Mordecai02 I love the windows 11 design language. It's beautiful (imo)
WDW feels a lot less creepy now that there is more colour 👍🏻 One reason I didn't really like playing it when I was a kid was that I found it quite hard to get the stars =P
The skybox is based off of a city in Yemen and not Spain
But I corrected myself and even mentioned it in the title?
Can I have a extended version of wet dry docks (cave dungeon with ddd inst)
it never felt creepy to me, it just (with all the other later levels in sm64) felt quite rushed
It seems like this particular level served as a test course the developers made to experiment with different things, like enemies and water level switches. Probably the first course that was rendered when first creating SM64, which explains why it felt unfinished. At least that's what it seems like to me.
@@scorpionwins6378 actually the first stage made was bob omb battlefield. Not counting the blank flat world very early on for testing controls. Looking at the first demos wdw isn't in them, iirc the only stages are bob, wf, lll, ccm, and jrb. So wdw was made pretty late in development
Wet dry world isn't creepy to begin with and this rom hack doesn't make it any less creepier.
Helpful
The only thing that bugged me about Wet and Dry World was that there was an actual town like place submerged in water and that even the little fire spits were dead/non-functional. Aside from that, what creeped me out more was that damn Piano. 🤣
I think it was a really old tetrabit gaming video where he theorized the dead fire dudes were the dead citizens, and I just like them because it just brings up discussion
You did a pretty good job for someone who can't read
?
its been a week will youtube let me reply to this? ive tried like 4 time and it hasent worked all 4 times
oh my god it finally did
The only questions is:
where did you get the 3d model?
www.models-resource.com/nintendo_64/supermario64/model/19009/
Went from a disturbing vivid gazing atmosphere to a feeling that’s somewhat relatable to spongebob bikini bottom
Oh my God I should've put battle for bikini bottom music in the level
Tbh I hate wet dry world I mean I've only played the game once but when I did wet dry world was my least favorite level
My least fav is tiny huge island hot take ik. The giant island is too big and the tiny one is too small
Lol Everyone says Wet Dry world is "creepy", mainly because it's a meme at this point. Cmon, it's not creepy - it's just not a good level. The level design feels clocked-in, like they needed another level and just threw something together.
Idk I find a lot of stuff creepy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I aluded to when reading the reddit comment but the castle in general is really creepy
