I think he means that the drowning animation is pretty realistic, in a pretty disturbing way. While other games like Sonic just show the character jumping out of the screen, Mario 64 actually shows him struggling to breathe for at least a few more seconds, only to fail, as his lifeless body starts floating in the water. Pretty creepy stuff

This game always felt very isolating to me. The castle is so big yet so empty, the worlds are so surreal and dream-like, and the early 3d graphics don't help either. There's barely anyone to talk to. Most of the NPCs you encounter in the game are enemies, and even those are pretty sparse in some of the levels. The only thing that talks to you are signs that are mysteriously placed in all the levels... You don't really feel like anyone has your back, you're basically just left out on your own.

Honestly, I always thought of the defeated enemies like this:
You know how they give a little 'poof!' with stars and all that? In 3D land and the original games, it has been shown the magic in their world can go as far as disguising enemies as Bowser himself, so Bowser has some fairly powerful magic. I imagine that the little poof signifies them being teleported! They get damaged, teleport back to Bowser's Castle, get first aid, then, once they're healthy enough, get sent back in the field! I mean, I don't think Bowser has an unlimited supply of troops, so this makes more sense, and it's just like an actual army!

Since when I played this as a little fetus boy (Joking), these things described as "Creepy" or "Unsettling" like the water world Skybox being a literal Atlantis had always seemt so.. aesthetic to me, I enjoyed looking at them in detail, to the point of going to a high surface just to see whats out in the void of the island we call a stage. Most of the paintings always made me chuckle since they seemt pretty stupid and funny to look at, I never saw the "Fire Monster" painting as an actual monster, I used to see it as just a flame that was withering out. I never got a feeling of dread or eeriness from this game (even from Wet Dry World) but I always felt a sense of unsatisfaction, like there was always another part to a level or the castle that was just out of reach. For example, I would try for hours as a kid to try and summit the hills surrounding Bob-Omb Battlefield to find out what was on the other side, and to try and shoot over the towering walls around Jolly Roger Bay, again to find out what lurked behind them. I've never felt anything close to this feeling from any other game before or since. I distinctly remember seeing a video years ago where a guy supposedly used the cannon in the castle grounds to shoot the other way over to Isle Delfino. Obviously, the video was completely fake and I can't find it anymore, but I think it instilled a sense in me of wanting further exploration in this game. Super Mario 64 DS and mods would quench that want ever so slightly.

I find that with Mario 64, as well as other N64 games, the "too realistic" texture problem is non-existant _as long as_ you play at the default very low resolution. There's less contrast between the perfect edges of polygons and the low-res slightly realistic textures at low resolutions (especially on a blurry CRT).
You may disagree on this point, and I do understand, because almost all of Mario's textures are just flat colours, which makes quite a jarring difference. I think that that difference makes sense though, because Mario is in other worlds for most of the game, paintings which contrast starkly with Mario, Peach, Toad, and their Mushroom Kingdom. Even the castle's corridors sort of fit that, being in a dark basement, even in your own house, can definitely feel like another world.
I think that the game is that way, at least in part, to help bring out a sense of adventure. The experiences of creeping through dark corridors or fighting your way up a big fortress are supposed to be amplified by a world that feels out of place, and even if they aren't made to do that, then they still do; the textures make it so that the game doesn't feel like one world where everything looks the same, but an archipelago of different landscapes, but to some it might feel quite disturbing.
    fun game tho

    • @GermanPeter
      @GermanPeter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

But I played it on an old CRT monitor, on an actual N64! And even back when I was a child (and giant LCD televisions weren't a thing), I was pretty weirded out by the textures.
In fact, I'd say that it's even WORSE on a CRT, because not only is everything blurry because of the game, but it's also difficult to tell what's going on in general because of the CRT. So your mind fills in the blanks. I do get what you mean about the rest though!
Still... why they gotta make it so creepy? Gimme more of that tho

It's quite an interesting mindset you had, and still have. As a child, I always thought that the levels and such you travel to are just different dimensions, in which you have to get the power stars back to defeat bowser. Although I only played SM64DS as a child, I can't really say that the textures creep me out in the original. For me at least, the game was a huge playground for me to have fun in.

I think the reason why Mario 64 is creepy is because it represent the abstract feeling the best way i could ever think of, like just unadd the Mario stuff and you got a a game where you explore a castle that go beyond what is possible with an interior that is bigger than the exterior that also got almost nobody in it (just like an nightmare when we think of it...) with room that have one of the most unnatural event in it, example : The mirror room with the mirror that reflect a painting that don't exist, the room with the Tiny Huge Island Painting that resize whoever goes near any painting, the endless stair (do i need to say more ?), a clock can literally take you on a dimension that looks like a giant clock interior, the castle ground ward which is haunted, and of course painting that lead to abstract word in the middle of the emptiness (ocean, desert, cave, void, ice mountain and whatever the heck is Wet Dry World is) with almost (again) nobody in it expect unnatural living creature that want to kill you.
Now that i think of it Mario 64 might be just an dream cause it looks like all of one of my weirdest nightmare and dream, but nice game tho really like it
Edit : okay i need to add more for the castle room part cause there are definitely more so : A room that have a giant metallic looking water portal that lead to a giant maze cave place, a hall where you found a water looking portal that definitely will give you *fun* , a aquarium room with a painting of a sunken ship with two hole in the wall, one that give you a one up, and one that teleport you to a giant cube made out of colored windows filled with water in (guess what ?) the middle of nowhere, two small elevated room that have a hole in it which give you a view of a sky while we in fact are looking *down* and not up which teleport you to some place with clouds and flying platform in the middle of the sky with of course nothings in the horizon, a trapped hall that lead you to a dark gloomy looking cave with platform in the middle of the air, and hole in the ground that lead you to a ocean of lava, and another hole this time, that teleport you to a place with colored sky sunset with platform floating in the air, a symbol placed in the center of the main hall that if you are placed the the center and looks up, you are teleported to some tower that seem to reach and incredible high level in the middle of the cloud with one tower platform with a giant red button, and a hole in the castle water lake things (idk how is it called) that make you go in a very weird place with lots of moving platform with another giant button, but this time it is blue.
But again, nice game i really like it

It's interesting to listen to perspectives on Mario 64 from younger people. When I played it when it was new, I wasn't at all afraid of it. I had no frame of reference to what a 3D game could potentially be. The fact that the worlds felt empty and that they are just wierd little self contained areas never occured to me at all.
I was so blown away by the entire game. The graphics were the most impressive thing I had ever seen at 7 years old. This brand new and immensly fun way to play video games was really all that occured to me. Something that I never thought possible.
I cannot stress enough just how mindblowing seeing Mario 64 for the first time was. Having no concept of what an Analog stick even was, despite having played video games my entire life. I remember the first time seeing the Mario 64 demo at target. I tried to use the dpad to move mario and was very confused when it didnt work. You make very interesting and intriguing content, honestly I don't find many people that make actually interesting content and not just like them playing a game or something. It's also complemented very well by the choice of music you use, making it feel like I'm watching a well made documentary and not just simply a generic TH-cam video. It seems you put a lot of effort into your videos and you know what you're doing, you really should have at least a million subscribers. I watched both the "Minecraft is a scary game" video as well as this one and I'm going to watch "Skyboxes, Bob Ross and the Unobtainable". I subscribed and look forward to seeing more videos of yours, a tip that I recommend doing is (and I know it might seem a little cheap), tell people to subscribe and/or like. It's proven to be very effective to do that as some people don't automatically do it unless reminded (at first I didn't think about it but then I went to eat breakfast and remembered to subscribe), you can also make it even more effective by showing an animation or a clip of clicking the subscribe button. It's very effective if you do it at the beginning of the video but I personally think that you have to give your viewers a chance to know if your content is good and it's a little bit scummy to just be like "subscribe" before they even watch the video but you could do it at the end and people will probably subscribe because they know that you make well made and interesting videos. Much love and support.

Amazingly, you would have likely been less disturbed as a child because you tend to not notice disturbing things as a child that you notice as an adult. Still, this was quite a fascinating video and I quite enjoyed hearing your perspective. ^_^ I always found the piano a bit frightening though, as well as the ghost in the hallway you mentioned, but those scary elements help make the game fun. Overall it fills me with such warm, fuzzy nostalgic feelings.

I grew up on Mario Galaxy, and when I played 64 a year ago out of curiosity it felt like I was playing a version of Galaxy from the uncanny valley.
All the textures were just a bit too far removed from the modern versions I’m used to, and the backgrounds seemingly went on forever.
The fog around the bowser levels is so oppressive and unnatural, I felt like if you fell off the level you would never ever land.

Look I’m sorry if I sound rude, but this just sounds like he’s finding things to go “OMG CREEPY” at for the sake of this video. Literally everything he mentions could be explained with “it fits with the theme of the level” or “the developers didn’t think that deep into it”.

AkiraLionPilot not only that but in a wacky world as Marios this shouldn’t be a surprise. Heck the clouds and even the hills have eyes, nothing should be surprising anymore in that world

Huh, i never really was affected by this stuff, when i played this game as a kid. Then again, i played the DS port, which is a lot more colorful and cartoony. (And it also used modernized designs for the character, which also could have made a difference.) The only thing, that i can relate to are the backgrounds, as i myself remember trying to swim to the other island in the castle area, before realizing that i was going nowhere. And also remember being fascinated by Wet-Dry Worlds background, but not really being scared of it.

Yeah after playing the DS version a few months ago and playing the 64 version now I can safely say that the remake did a great job of making everything feel less eerie and more alive.

There are a lot of creepy pasta stuff surrounding 64 games. It’s more than likely comes from the uncanniness of having 3d graphics like it applied to something people have known forever.
