    This game always felt very isolating to me. The castle is so big yet so empty, the worlds are so surreal and dream-like, and the early 3d graphics don't help either. There's barely anyone to talk to. Most of the NPCs you encounter in the game are enemies, and even those are pretty sparse in some of the levels. The only thing that talks to you are signs that are mysteriously placed in all the levels... You don't really feel like anyone has your back, you're basically just left out on your own.

      @galegopaulista4564 4 ปีที่แล้ว +251

      I think he means that the drowning animation is pretty realistic, in a pretty disturbing way. While other games like Sonic just show the character jumping out of the screen, Mario 64 actually shows him struggling to breathe for at least a few more seconds, only to fail, as his lifeless body starts floating in the water. Pretty creepy stuff

    Honestly, I always thought of the defeated enemies like this:
    You know how they give a little 'poof!' with stars and all that? In 3D land and the original games, it has been shown the magic in their world can go as far as disguising enemies as Bowser himself, so Bowser has some fairly powerful magic. I imagine that the little poof signifies them being teleported! They get damaged, teleport back to Bowser's Castle, get first aid, then, once they're healthy enough, get sent back in the field! I mean, I don't think Bowser has an unlimited supply of troops, so this makes more sense, and it's just like an actual army!

    Im only seeing this so I can understand a person's different perspective. Since when I played this as a little fetus boy (Joking), these things described as "Creepy" or "Unsettling" like the water world Skybox being a literal Atlantis had always seemt so.. aesthetic to me, I enjoyed looking at them in detail, to the point of going to a high surface just to see whats out in the void of the island we call a stage. Most of the paintings always made me chuckle since they seemt pretty stupid and funny to look at, I never saw the "Fire Monster" painting as an actual monster, I used to see it as just a flame that was withering out. Seeing the perspectives of other people, SPECIALLY those who turn around your opinions is a great way to spend the quarantine times, just seeing how people think differently than you do.

    "Why can't I shake this feeling that I'm being watched?"
    You're forgetting that throughout the entire game, there is someone watching. Right behind you, no matter where you go, they're always right behind you. Staring, watching, keeping track of your every movement, never ceasing for a moment and always able to match your speed. No matter how high you fly, how low you sink, how slow you crawl or how quickly you run, they will always match you move for move.
    The question isn't if you're being watched...

    I find that with Mario 64, as well as other N64 games, the "too realistic" texture problem is non-existant _as long as_ you play at the default very low resolution. There's less contrast between the perfect edges of polygons and the low-res slightly realistic textures at low resolutions (especially on a blurry CRT).
    You may disagree on this point, and I do understand, because almost all of Mario's textures are just flat colours, which makes quite a jarring difference. I think that that difference makes sense though, because Mario is in other worlds for most of the game, paintings which contrast starkly with Mario, Peach, Toad, and their Mushroom Kingdom. Even the castle's corridors sort of fit that, being in a dark basement, even in your own house, can definitely feel like another world.
    I think that the game is that way, at least in part, to help bring out a sense of adventure. The experiences of creeping through dark corridors or fighting your way up a big fortress are supposed to be amplified by a world that feels out of place, and even if they aren't made to do that, then they still do; the textures make it so that the game doesn't feel like one world where everything looks the same, but an archipelago of different landscapes, but to some it might feel quite disturbing.
    fun game tho

    • @GermanPeter
      @GermanPeter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      But I played it on an old CRT monitor, on an actual N64! And even back when I was a child (and giant LCD televisions weren't a thing), I was pretty weirded out by the textures.
      In fact, I'd say that it's even WORSE on a CRT, because not only is everything blurry because of the game, but it's also difficult to tell what's going on in general because of the CRT. So your mind fills in the blanks. I do get what you mean about the rest though!
      Still... why they gotta make it so creepy? Gimme more of that tho

    I never got a feeling of dread or eeriness from this game (even from Wet Dry World) but I always felt a sense of unsatisfaction, like there was always another part to a level or the castle that was just out of reach. For example, I would try for hours as a kid to try and summit the hills surrounding Bob-Omb Battlefield to find out what was on the other side, and to try and shoot over the towering walls around Jolly Roger Bay, again to find out what lurked behind them. I've never felt anything close to this feeling from any other game before or since. I distinctly remember seeing a video years ago where a guy supposedly used the cannon in the castle grounds to shoot the other way over to Isle Delfino. Obviously, the video was completely fake and I can't find it anymore, but I think it instilled a sense in me of wanting further exploration in this game. Super Mario 64 DS and mods would quench that want ever so slightly.

I'm old...I've seen it all. Super Nintendo for some reason didn't feel creepy. Probably because it wasn't the first of its kind. 3D was the first of it's kind on N64 and it was on a cartridge.

      some just saw a black void, nothingness, emptiness
      some felt like they were still in the hospital room, looking at the doctors and himself on the bed
      some felt like they were in some sort of warm, cozy liquid, like it was so comfortable and peaceful they wanted to just stay there

    I think the reason why Mario 64 is creepy is because it represent the abstract feeling the best way i could ever think of, like just unadd the Mario stuff and you got a a game where you explore a castle that go beyond what is possible with an interior that is bigger than the exterior that also got almost nobody in it (just like an nightmare when we think of it...) with room that have one of the most unnatural event in it, example : The mirror room with the mirror that reflect a painting that don't exist, the room with the Tiny Huge Island Painting that resize whoever goes near any painting, the endless stair (do i need to say more ?), a clock can literally take you on a dimension that looks like a giant clock interior, the castle ground ward which is haunted, and of course painting that lead to abstract word in the middle of the emptiness (ocean, desert, cave, void, ice mountain and whatever the heck is Wet Dry World is) with almost (again) nobody in it expect unnatural living creature that want to kill you.
    Now that i think of it Mario 64 might be just an dream cause it looks like all of one of my weirdest nightmare and dream, but nice game tho really like it
    Edit : okay i need to add more for the castle room part cause there are definitely more so : A room that have a giant metallic looking water portal that lead to a giant maze cave place, a hall where you found a water looking portal that definitely will give you *fun* , a aquarium room with a painting of a sunken ship with two hole in the wall, one that give you a one up, and one that teleport you to a giant cube made out of colored windows filled with water in (guess what ?) the middle of nowhere, two small elevated room that have a hole in it which give you a view of a sky while we in fact are looking *down* and not up which teleport you to some place with clouds and flying platform in the middle of the sky with of course nothings in the horizon, a trapped hall that lead you to a dark gloomy looking cave with platform in the middle of the air, and hole in the ground that lead you to a ocean of lava, and another hole this time, that teleport you to a place with colored sky sunset with platform floating in the air, a symbol placed in the center of the main hall that if you are placed the the center and looks up, you are teleported to some tower that seem to reach and incredible high level in the middle of the cloud with one tower platform with a giant red button, and a hole in the castle water lake things (idk how is it called) that make you go in a very weird place with lots of moving platform with another giant button, but this time it is blue.
    But again, nice game i really like it

      @Geoffrey the art dude: The personalized comes from not understanding what happen while playing a cartridge version of Super mario 64. unitentionall abritrary code execution, because a cartridge version will have more situation of crashing, because of a dusty pin, playing it for way to long, so it crash because the console is too hot. Not gonna lie, Wet Dry World was actually one of my favorite levels because of the platforming and mixture of red and blue colors, and I always had fun playing it. The skybox didn't really creep me out much because I never realized the town was underwater, I had just from one of the toads calling the stage "Water Town" just assumed Wet Dry World was a town level and so the skybox was just more of that town in the background. After watching this video though...I see why people think it creepy.

    • @retrofan4963

      The skybox of Wet Dry World is the only thing I question about this level. Why choose a realistic photographic town in Spain as a background in this level? Like what's the connection, what does it have to do with this level? It's just kind of out of place for a Mario game, putting an actual real town photo and make it look like a drowned city. In that sense, I can see why people find it quiite unsettled. And I didn't know that's what the skybox represents until he mentioned it. But that's it though, I do like Wet Dry World overall since it is a pretty interesting level with cool mechanics of raising and lowering the water. But it does make me think, if there were characters at one point living the town inside the cage in this level, so I guess that's my second question lol

    I can’t believe 15k people liked this video. I’m not a harsh critic who just loves to bash people’s content but this was absolutely ridiculous.

    "Why does everything in this game want to crush me?" It's a video game, what do you want?
    "I never found the giant eyeballs scary. Same goes for the eel and the piano." "What's worse than them, though, is the snowman." That's just really funny.
    "Why is the snow even alive? It's snow!" It's a Mario game, dude. Why did you question that but not the the living cacti or concrete blocks?

      The SM64 community is still incredibly important for the game's lifespan. im sure that BLJing and thousands of memes wouldn't have been discovered without it.

    I don't see how any of this is unsettling, even when I played this game as a child it was still not very unsettling. It just seems like anything you see/hear creeps you out, but to me it was just another N64 game.

    There are a lot of creepy pasta stuff surrounding 64 games. It’s more than likely comes from the uncanniness of having 3d graphics like it applied to something people have known forever.

    I... don't know why but I've always felt that whomps fortress was different every time I played it and I'm not joking... The Wario Apparition isn't real but it does REALLY feel like every copy is personalized. The hidden slider in Peach's Castle always seemed a lot longer than it was supposed to be... It really does feel unsettling... Wet Dry world reminds me of those “oddly familiar places with eerie music” videos for some reason it's such a strange feeling that's hard to explain!

    How the heck did Unagi never get a reaction out of you? That eel was the thing that triggered my Thalassophobia... The rest of the game however was always pretty normal and fun for me to play (except obviously for the infamous Wet-Dry World, eerie as hell)

    There's now an entire generation of gamers that grew up with a pretty decent standard of graphics, not only in games but in cartoons as well. The CG style was well established when they were born. Back in 1996 there was one CG cartoon - Reboot, and Toy Story was the only CG movie. We were still trying to figure out what CG cartoons should look like. That coupled with how under powered the consoles of the time were lead to some visuals that are pretty weird in hindsight, and creep out the generation that aren't used to them. You see this in all the creepy Mario memes, and PS1 stylised horror games that we're starting to see.
