When Resident Evil 4 launched in 2005, it redefined both the third-person shooter and survival horror genres with inventive camerawork and visceral gameplay mechanics. For years after its advent, countless developers followed the game’s lead, emulating Shinji Mikami, who was the franchise’s co-creator, and his techniques for their own endeavors. However, barring the likes of Gears of War, hardly any of these titles managed to further innovate the genre. It would take another Mikami-directed adventure to reinvigorate third-person shooters with something completely fresh. The game in question is none other than the still highly-regarded Vanquish.
In essence, Vanquish was a product of Mikami’s desire to reject the then standard characteristics of first and third-person shooters alike, especially those of the cover-based variety. As a result, speed-infused gameplay took precedence during Vanquish’s creation, as the team at PlatinumGames approached the project as though it were a melee-oriented action game-a genre in which everyone involved was much more familiar. This strategy yielded a genuinely unique experience that many believe remains unparalleled.
It’s noteworthy that such esteem is held for a lesser-known, 7th console generation one-off with seemingly no hope for a sequel in sight. But perhaps the varying qualities that make Vanquish so distinctive constitute the reason for its continued relevance in the minds of all who have ventured through Mikami’s sci-fi world.
This is the history of Vanquish.

Anything that Platinum touches turns into pure awesomeness. And Mikami of course is a goddamn genius
Now if only the things Platinum touches sold well as well, it's such a shame that they have the most interesting games but that they just get terrible sales.
@@dandelyon1830 Vanquish is literally revolutionary to the gaming industry in the 3rd Person Shooter genre without exaggeration. It's sad tbh to see a game so well designed not be as successful as it should be.
That spiderman qte moment never gets old.

"oh no!"
💥
"I'm gonna die" 💥
Shame that game just had to be a letdown just like the movie it's adapted on, and that's comparing it to the previous two games.
The moment GVMERS releases a new video, i drop everything i am doing and start watching it.
*holding a newborn baby, sees a new Gvmer video and drops it*

Trueeee
This game is so underrated it’s a crime
BIG time. and Bayonetta
@@Itsameemario no bayonetta is far from "underrated"
True!
@@Itsameemario at least bayonetta got a sequel
It also seems similar to warframe
The fact that there is no Vanquish 2 is a crime against gaming.
To be honest, a sequel might be inferior compared to the original, so leaving it hanging could be the better option.
Of course, I would freak if they finally announce and release a Viewtiful Joe 3.
@@michaelandreipalon359 might be inferior, just as it might be superior, you can never know for sure
everyone get the new version and we might
The first game is overrated
What I still love about Vanquish is it's one of those unique shooters that each time you play it, you can approach enemy encounters differently and experiment with all the diverse techniques your character can execute making the game never feel stale. Plus, the frenetically paced gameplay is always a pleasure to come back to every time.
Bingo.
What I love the most about this channel is the archive footage they use. Makes the video very interesting and professional.
We need more single player 3rd person shooters!
Not all this online multiplayer garbage.
For a sec I thought your picture of Conker was him sliding like the Vanquish cover 😂
This game is a masterclass of gameplay. Don't miss out. Also, much respect for those who completed Challenge 6.
Ultrakill is better.
So is God Hand, another under-the-radar gem that Shinji Mikami made that not enough people have played.
@@Jazzadrin nah apparently it's terrible, IGN gave it a 3.
@@DezuKiwami They also gave TLoU2 a 10/10. Shows just how trustworthy they are rofl 🤣
@@Jazzadrin I can't imagine anyone taking them seriously. Giving a shit about what some reviewer thinks of any game is pointless anyway.
This game is so fucking underapreciated. The whole flow and gameplay of the game is fucking gold
Platinum's Underrated Gem
That could be said for all Platinum (and Clover) titles, unfortunately.
@@bergonath8851 To be fair, their reputation is getting more well known and their more recent games have been doing better in terms of sales.
They have some hitters but they also have just as many duds as well. It feels like for each hit they put out their next game usually flops.
@@Kojiros7th That was definitely the case for their early years, and 2016 was full of nothing but duds. But 2017 was the year when their luck started to shine with NieR: Automata, and continued on with Astral Chain and the successful Kickstarter for Wonderful 101 Remastered.
@@DinoDave150 you forgot there best game....star fox zero.
Ive bought this game 3 times so far and loved every minute...I would LOVE to get a sequel to this game!!!
I remember this game for the amount of times i had to pause and go "WHAT!" as things got cranked to 11 and I could no longer comprehend what my eyeballs were seeing.
Absolute ridiculous masterpiece, with a character reminiscent of Devil May Cry, or Just Cause
Love to see Vanquish getting talked about more. The game really is a gem especially on the harder difficulties
true
Yeah I replayed it many times on Pc and X360.
When you despair, slouched over, thinking it's Sunday and nobody's gonna bother uploading, GVMERS saves the Day
I remember playing the demo on xbox 360 and falling in love with the gameplay and characters. Amazing underrated game
Bro I literally was just thinling about this channel yesterdat and then I get an upload. Nice!

I'm pretty sure Google have invented a way to read our minds
One of my top 10 favorite games of all time. Replayed it like four times on PS3 and twice on PC so far.
I hear ya! It’s one of those games that I’m super close to platinuming just because I’ve played it so much. I just need to shoot a few more lil gold statue men.
talk about nostalgia trip! Totally remember this game being reviewed back in the day and thinking it was NEXT GEN stuff. which obviously it was well ahead of it's time! Awesome to see it getting the proper recognition it deserves!
The professionalism in these videos are always amazing!
Vanquist is a very interesting concept of game, some more twirks and could have become a true classic.
Huh? VanquisH is already a classc! It doesn’t need any “twirks.”
Probably one of my favourite games. Severely underrated. Glad this popped up on my feed early.

@@lordneojacks Not according to UK spell check. 🤷♂️
@@lordneojacks favourite is the correct spelling. With the rise of newspapers, certain words were shortened to save news print.
@@Psilocybin77 I don't think that's true. The _-or_ spelling comes from Latin, whilst the _-our_ spelling comes from Old French. The _-u_ spelling was used more until the 1600s. Then people started to advocate a return to the Latin spelling based both on etymological and phonetical grounds, whilst others starkly resisted. As there was no official standard, different people used different spellings. By the late 1700s, things were becoming more standardised as per Johnson's dictionary in Britain and then Webster's in America. Each country sort of instinctively latched onto whatever the other one wasn't doing as some form of national identity, but prior to this, many spellings were used with equal frequency in both countries.
Anyway, the point is, there is no correct spelling I use the _-u_ spellings. I'm used to them. They're not wrong. Neither is the Latin spelling.
Thank you. Vanquish was such a fun game, though very short.
These kinds of games are usually short. They are meant to be replayed over and over. Every time play vanquish I discover a new thing I didn't know I could do lol
Certain games benefit from having a short length so they don't feel padded out or overstay their welcome.
@@DinoDave150 yeah i think bayonetta has that problem. Games like that can be exhausting when they're too long
This is definitely one of the best, and yet most underrated in-depth Channel about Gaming History. The cheer amount of work and the quality of it, I'm in love with it. Much love GVMERS!
Thanks so much for what you guys do. This kind of content is right up my alley and you guys do it so well. I light up when I see a new episode comes out. Some people complain about the time between each episode, and while I'd always love more GVMERS, I'm glad you guys take the time to pour love into each episode.
I'd love to see you guys cover Counter-Strike, its evolutions, and its incredible custom maps scene. People love to just cover the games themselves, but the mods were the life of CS back in the day, and I'd love to see a quality channel like this cover it. Names like Nathaniel Miller should be more well known!
Ooh that resident evil 4 intro hit my nostalgia a little too unexpectedly 😂
This was awesome, such an underrated game.
I can’t wait for a Dino Crisis episode at some point......

Love this game, was a breath of fresh air on the rince and repeat cover-shooter.
Hope you can do a History of Evil Within, wonder if the series is profitable and what Tango is up to now...
I love these videos, they're so well put together!
As for Vanquish, 100% this is an underrated title and it's a shame we haven't seen any other developers try to replicate it, but in reality, what other Devs are up there action combat wise with Platinum? Great video, great game.
I just want to mention that I recently heard Steve’s voice on my job’s HR phone system. Not only did I smile, but I no longer felt guilty for calling out. Steve is the man!
Now this a game that deserves a sequel! It was really a shooter fun game.
12:09 That Spiderman legendary fail QTE
I always wanted to play this game when I was a kid, never got it, never got around to it. I been playing a lot of old games lately so this has to be my next pickup
I played this game not too long ago, it kicked my ass but it was a very good time. Even loved the cheesy story, felt like a return to another era
I remember playing the demo over and over and over. I wish I bought it back in the day
Why not buy it today?
12:09
thank you for that editor
Beaten this game a few times and I always loved it. The best part is the unique weapon upgrading system which is very addicting!
One of my favorite games of all time. On the one hand, really happy its getting its own video. I really love this channel, but would love to see more classical franchises like Zelda and Metal Gear get their own segments.
dude, there are whole channels dedicated to zelda (and MGS, too), I'm glad to see other games (like vanquish) getting at least some attention they deserve, as overshadowed by these big franchises like Zelda
(GVMERS should do a followup to this one with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, another PlatinumGames gem)
I played it recently for the first time. Legit one of the best games I've ever played. Completely ridiculous in all the right ways and the tightest gameplay you could hope for. Still quite pretty as well!
Other Games: u use Boosters for jumping.
Vanquish: u use boosters for sliding.

I already have this game in my steam library but had no idea it was created by a great production team.👍
one of my favourite shooters of all time. i remember i would play the first mission over again so i could see the fight scene between sam and burns. i played this way too much when i was younger, such an underrated gem.
12:10 _"I'm gonna dieee..."_ LOL
I'm not a big fan of shooters. I enjoy the genre but I have never bought many titles of it. Only Red Faction 2. I knew nothing about Vanquish and I bought it. I bought at full price when it first came out. The campaign was around 5 hours long. Some might say, "Nah, that's too short for 60 bucks." I can see their point, but Vanquish was such a blast it felt worth it. There is not a single shooter I love more than Vanquish. The speed and movement, the weapons, the settings, the main character, the slow mo.... All of it SO DAMN GOOD. RIP Vanquish. We never got a sequel let alone anything like it.
i get so excited when I see you guys upload something. :) You're an amazing channel, thank you for all the brilliant videos you've produced throughout the last 5 years. Much love.
Vanquish : Second Chapter would be a Day One for me! Excellent vid as always guys!
I remember the dialog being unintentionally hilarious.
I imagine it's highly intentional.
This channel is awesome GVMAERS kills the game with these story’s of development
One of my favorite titles from Platinum Games. Highly octane but functional TPS with solid controls. Highly underrated and one of the gems on the PS3 and 360 systems.
I remember wanting to buy this game while in vacation and forgot to buy it after I came home will definitely buy this on steam now
Please do a History of the Resident Evil franchise, it has so much history and development behind it!
They need to make this after RE VIIIage has finally released.
I get this video having less views than normal, considering the game.
But damn, does GVMERS have underrated videos about underrated games. You deserve so much more man, and you're getting there.
I hope Vanquish will receive a sequel someday. The game ended on a cliffhanger after all!
If system shock could get a remake, then vanquish can get a sequel, there’s always hope people
Vanquish is the game I mention anytime someone asks me what's my favorite game
Your game documentary is legendary, just as Vanquish!
That opening track: RESIDENT EVIL 4 OST - THE DRIVE
I love vanquish that game was really awesome and badass
The fact that this video has so few views is a testament to the taste of the average gaming layman.
This game is so underrated, truly a hidden gem. Glad to have it on PS3/PS4 (and PC)
i always love watching these videos, even if i seen them before i dont mind re watching again and again simply because of the quality and also the narrations are top tier

Every time I think about this channel and how they haven't uploaded in a while, they do so the very next day! It's like they're reading my mind or something hahaha! Anyways, great job as always and keep up the good work 👍
I freakin love this game! Vanquish, Binary Domain & Metal Gear Rising are awesome played back to back.
Vanquish was one of the first games I got when I finally took the dive and decided to get a PS3, and one of the only titles I ever really spent a good amount of time playing on the PS3 (I'm a PC Gamer, so outside of the odd stand-out exclusives there was little reason to use my PS3). I heard some good things about it, and it was cheap to pick it up used, so I did, and I was astounded by just how fast and fluid the game was, how good it was took me by surprise for sure.
Although, now I'm older, coming back to it for the PC release a couple years ago, I do struggle to play it for long periods of times now. It's pretty intense, so playing it for an hour or so makes me feel drained now. Better in shorter bursts lol. I feel like if the campaign was longer it would overstay it's welcome anyway. While I still love the game, there is a few things in it that don't work quite as well as they should (which with the power of experience and hindsight I can now recognise), such as the weapon upgrade system (which ultimately dissuades you from actually mixing up your weapons, when the intent was probably to encourage it), which I hope if we ever do get a sequel they will address.
Also yeah, the QTEs need to be thrown in the bin lol. I'm not even sure what some of the symbols mean.
I absolutely love this game. You guys should do Binary Domain next
This is the only game i ever bought out sheer respect for the devs behind it. Platinum knows how to make action games.
I remember loving the demo for this as a teenager, but never getting to play the full game. Finally picked it up on sale for $10, can't wait to play it after beating FFVII Remake
This guys voice reminds me of the voice from how its made i loved that show idk if its the same guy but holy cow it sounds the same!!! So relaxing thank you for doing these videos!
You all do the BEST video game documentaries....PERIOD! 💯🙌
One of my favourite games of all time simply for the gameplay and style. Such a cool and badass game. Took me years to do God Hard and Challenge 6 but thank god I did it.
Vanquish is... FANTASTIC!!
I love Vanquish
It's a good morning when a new GVMERS vid drops
Weird I literally just but it a couple days ago on PS4. Still loved it as much as I did back on the 360. I'm not picky when it comes to graphics, but Vanquishish looks so good at 60fps. Sam taught me that you can smoke a pack a cutscene and still properly pilot an exosuit
I would love sequel to this game.
Vanquish and Bayonetta are gems! Both have unique styles and make so much fun. Try them out if you didn't yet!
The only YT voiceover worth listening to
We need Vanquish II
I remember playing Vanquish as a 8 year old on my ps3, I raged so much but beating the game was a big achievement for me.
We need a Rise And Fall of Legacy of Kain video
Hey GVMERS, I've been subscribed for a long time. I havent been recommended one of your videos in probably over 6 months. Just so you're aware.
hell yea!!! vanquish deserves more love...
Waiting for "The History of Bayonetta", then.
Just watched the GDC talk on the Doom Eternal team implementing this same "push forward combat" design. really cool to see earlier games going for the same thing
you seriously need to do a doc on " godhand" its such a fantastic game , up there with the best.

Vanquish is one of the games I tested on my new PC to see how capable it is. What an amazing game it still is today. Unfortunately my PC can't handle it at 1080p 60 fps.
KNEE ROCKETS need I say more
If there's any game that needs at least one more entry to its name, it's Vanquish. As novel and as special as it is as a one-off action experience, it really deserves another outing, perhaps in a larger scale with an enticing and addictive multiplayer offering. The High Moon Transformers games come to mind in that regard, games which I fear are trapped in the previous generation for good.
Played this for the first time last month, it's up there with Devil May Cry as an action game. Awesome

I played this game, it's so underrated, this game is all about.
Vanquish is a BADASS DARK HORSE GAME that is dying for a sequel. Man. The feeling you get when you conquer Hamburger Hill at its Expert difficulty setting, you had to push the evolution of your skills just to advance. Loved this game! It's so sick!
I have been waiting for this one!!
This game does, indeed, need a sequel.
I need to play this game again, already beat it on hard but still need to beat the challenges. Such a love letter to people like me who grew up playing arcade games like metal slug.
Oh right - I need to finish the super hard challenge myself too. It’s so long!
This looks dope! How have I never heard of it? I'm gonna buy it 😉👍
Vanquish is easily one of the best games that i ever played it definitely deserves a sequel, you guys should make a video about the rise and fall of Japan studios and how where probably never going to get a demon souls 2 or a bloodborne 2 since the studio was shut down. 🥺😭
This is what Metroid Prime 4's combat should be if it was third person but we're not going to get that.
