It's so sad what happened to my ancestors and every Hawaiian affected in a negative way. My great grandma's land was taken away by foreigners and she doesn't talk about it and we don't talk about it around her because it always brings tears to her eyes. It's also heartbreaking to see comments on videos like this and where some Hawaiians are furious of the past saying "Your land was taken, get over it" Please just spread Aloha. Mahalo
I like how the movie tells the story about what happend to Hawaii. But to me, it is NOT POWERFUL ENOUGH into spreading to the world that the United States invaded Hawaii and ILLEGALLY made it part of its territory! Especially, when it contridicts everything in the end. We Hawaiians should make the book "HAWAII'S STORY BY HAWAII'S QUEEN" a movie instead of this! Considering the fact that Her Majesty wrote it Herself, THAT should be the one telling the world what happend. Don't you think so?
When the world comes to you wanting to trade and do business. You link yourself to a power who you relate to in some way who will fight with you instead of against you. Who can help you instead of hinder. Politics is never truly shown on the surface and I'm sure what actually happened is totally different than the story that we've been given. Logically speaking from a geographic view point and in regards to military strength for protection The United States of America is the power if I had dominion over Hawaiian territory I would call on for Militaristic Advantages. The US is the Strongest power so close to them. I mean who else would you go with Mexico, Brazil, Chile? No. Just think of the response to Pearl Harbor. We got in the war because of Hawaii. Hell we Nuked them bastards over that shit.
I believe so. My boyfriend and the rest of my family ancestors: Awong family has been given the courage in Honolulu years because I was born and raise there decade. They wanted me to watch the history movie and I didn't think this can happen to our own culture that was taken away from us. Force to speak english and it's rough...
Q'orianka Kilcher represented Princess Kaiulani so well. She embraced her character beautifully. Loved the movie. Someone should've warned me to take lots of tissue to wipe the tears. We are Polynesian but our ancestors came from South America. Bottom line is she represented well. That's all that matters.
i've waited so long too for them to actually make a video about Hawai'i. I'm hoping that they do a video about our beloved Queen Lili'uokalani. i'm Hawaiian, and i'm glad they did a video of Princess Ka'iulani.
One of my favorite films. I think about it all the time and aspire one day to represent the indigenous people of the USA and be like princess kauilani. I am Indian by the way 🇮🇳
she almost has a british accent towards the end... anyways people need to learn about Hawaii's history! Hawaii was a sovereign nation with a kingdom before it was overthrown then made a united state!
+Simply Free She went to school in England which explains the accent. It is true though that people should learn more about Hawaii's history. It's quite fascinating.
English accent. No such thing as a British accent. Common American inaccuracy. Its like saying North American accent and then forgetting Mexico is in North America.
I agree I think that Hawaiian history is very important and should be learned about. Sadly, the Kingdom of Hawaii is not alive no more. I only wish we could learn about what we have done to not give freedom to a Kingdom that did nothing wrong but wanted to bring peace and joy to the United States.
I really can't wait to see this movie! Everyone must know about this and who Hawaii is. Especially people on the US mainland. I really want to see this myself!
A lot of work was put into it as well as research. it's not just a "American/British point of view". Can't wait to see it Marc. Wish you guys the best of luck with the film. We'll see you soon. Mike
I think some of you are missing the point. If you are a person of Hawaiian descent maybe you should try looking at it in a different perspective instead of accusing the movie negatively right off the back. Many westerns have no clue about the hawaiian people, and culture. This movie may not be quiet accurate according to history but the fact that it puts Hawaii on the map is key. Its a start. It will open viewers eyes and allow them to see Hawai'i in a different angle.
I worked with a young man from Pakistan who told me the English came to India to trade, and it took 300 years before they left. During President Clinton's term, at least he gave the Hawian people an apology for taking their nation away from them, long over due.
I know its a 10 year old comment. I came across the trailer when looking up the famous song she wrote. About the British leaving, it wasn't just that. Other invaders had come to India before too , recorded since the time of Alexander, but they usually stayed and assimilated into the culture and weren't actively trying to strip mine the place and became Indian before they ever left. The Mughals started as Persian speaking group from Afghanistan but ended up as Urdu speakers which is a mix or Hindi, Farsi and Arabic among other local languages. The Muglahs mingled, they intermarried, they learned from India and taught Indians. The British came, kept separate from the locals, about the biggest thing they took from Indian languages into English was the phrase "big cheese", and as a parting gift they split Kashmir deliberately in a way to cause wars later between us Pakistanis and our Indian brothers, with the ONLY source of fresh water for Pakistan being in Kashmir via Indus and they made two countries instead of three , like the original plan, which let monsters like Yahya Khan and Bhutto to commit genocide in what would later be Bangladesh. So yeah, they did far worse to us than the US did to Hawaii and there was far more to the Pakistani guy's comment.
@Jamez773 In the Hawaiian language, the "w"s are pronounced as "v"s. Usually, you'll hear people saying in like Hvai-ee. I lived in Honolulu for about three years and in that short time you can learn a lot about a culture. We English speakers tend to invent names for foreign countries and languages for some strange reason. Where do we get the word "Germany" from "Deutschland" or the word "Japan" from "Nihon-koku"?
I'm living in L.A. now, so I guess I "no can talk." I hope that I'm wrong about the grapevine in Hawaii. I hope to do my film there later this year. BTW, is this Liberty Lemon?
@juincey74 she isnt from new zealand... she was born in germany and lived in hawaii for a little bit... then moved to the mainland.. she might not be hawaiian, but she respects the islands enough
@Kameha413. Guess so. But there is one thing that is certain. At least the British and French learned the lesson of giving countries that they took an option for independence BEFORE the U.S. That actually went for us too (Hawaii) The British, along with the French, had decided to make Hawaii an independent nation after the Paulet Affair in 1843.
@ArkOfJustice Right on! Curatrix is one of those typical people who are so afraid of the truth, but they already know it to be, so he takes personal stabs at people here even to stoop as low as picking on a 15yr. old here on youtube. @curatrix2008. Very true. But most of the population was domanated the U.S people. And even if there more Hawaiians then the U.S people, there was one thing that was missing, and if I'm right, delibrately removed: NO OPTION FOR INDEPENDENCE. It was either remain a territory or become a state.
@Kameha413 it has nothing to do with lili'uoklani the thrown was not left to lili'uokalani, & this movie tells the story of ka'iulani & her struggles. everyone knows the struggles that lili'uokalani went through.we all saw see it now in the overthrow, but this movie shows how hard she also fought for her kingdom, she was left to be queen because it was her rightful place, the only reason lili'uokalani became queen is because kaiulani passed away. i so love liliu dont get me wrong

This film seems nice..yet still haven't seen it. See if it doesn't try too many subplot stories in the overall Big story that don't fit evenly. I enjoy good Time Period Art House films such as this.
I'd say watch it, it does show some of the actual situation, (Kalakaua being incompetent, the legitimate grievances (and they did have them) the haole businessmen had etc.) but they don't go into the entire situation nearly as much as they should have, and if they did the movie would have been far more interesting and probably would have done better.
@SlaughterWings well i dont know where you get ur info from but its wrong Hawaii has a lot of history and this movie is a good lesson for Hawaiians to see on how our land was taken from us.
@theladygagamonster1. Ever since the monarchy was overthrown, yes. We and they have tried. But just after the monarchy was overthrown, rebels that tried to restore the Queen to power was hunted down and tried. Fearing that the Queen formed the plot, which she did not, she was arrested. Now in the present time, we are still trying to restore the monarchy, without resulting to fighting.
@vstanford33. Well. I have to say pretty true. And that is what I fear the most of what will happen if my exiled country becomes independent; A war between Hawaii and the U.S, or worse, another civil war for other states in the U.S. that will try to secessed. For Hawaii's case, there is one way I can think of to prevent a war should we ever become independent. Which we are already working on.
