1970 Detroit 4-53 out of a Timber Jack 440 skidder. I bought two of these engines for parts and dismantling this one to see what parts are salvageable.:)
Lol, that would be something.:) I've considered throwing a 4-53 together with junk parts and see how well it runs on the dyno.:) Too many projects to complete, so for now just a pipe dream.:) Or nightmare.lol
@@detroitgarage9430 I bet it would surprise you on how well it would run as long as the compression was good. It might make you kick yourself for trying to be so perfect! LOL!!!
Rescue mission if ever there was. What is the new parts supply situation like for things like heads and oil coolers etc like? Bearing date Feb 1978......must have been in service for at least 30 years. Amazing that you got as much recoverable parts as you did ))
Yes all the parts are still available if one were to rebuild it. Lots of both new and used oil coolers, heads, cranks and cams are sold through PCIndustries and others.:)
Watching these videos brings back so many memories of Detroit Diesels I've worked on during my career. Boats (mostly), equipment, generators.. you name it. Got to see some pretty cool places with the ability to diagnose and repair them. I can almost smell that peculiar smell International Compound #2 had after being run in a Detroit. You know you know. 😆
Are you still planning on calling the Diamond T “bent metal”? Even though you are putting in new sheet metal for the cab extension and extending the fenders.
Yes, I send the block and head to get hot tanked. I'm tearing down and rebuilding a Silver 4-53T as we speak and will be pressure washing it. Spay with an engine cleaner and then pressure wash. That works pretty well.:)
Thanks, I moved the system down near the entrance.:) Gives me room to store the dyno where the tanks used to be.:) I'll be posting an update video on Little Jimmy soon and you can see the tanks in the video.:)
Run hard and put away wet is all that a skidder can look forward to. Bailing wire and motor honey was the extent of maintenance on logging equipment 👍
Very true, would love to have known the total hours on this engine before it was removed from service.:)
Send those pistons and liners to Pakistani Truckers and they will use them up the rest of the way! LOL!!! Thanks!

They certainly are unique, great engines for sure.:)

Yes, there's plenty of bent metal with the added stretch.:)
How do you get all those parts cleaned up? Do you send the block and head out to get hot tanked? Pressure washer? I need to know! Thanks.

Hope you get some good bits, used to crack repair Detroit heads with plugs including the injector area with large plug and then machine.
Thanks, I'll keep the head for repair if it is ever used again.:)
Great video, but where did all the WVO processing go? It used to be there in the shop near the oil stove and I don't see it anymore!

Do you have any 71 series motor teardowns?
No, just 53 series Detroits.:)
