i am just getting into fashion at 15, and wanting to understand how and why clothes are designed the way they are. and it can be pretty daunting stepping into a world that seems so big and scary. but your videos are very simple for me to follow and get a good understanding of. thank you so much!
Let me know in the comments if you found this video helpful, or if you still have any questions about the elements and principles of design for fashion. Thanks!
These videos are fantastic! I came here with the intention of learning how to style normal outfits and this is one of the best sets of videos I've seen for that purpose because it puts me in the mindset of a designer or stylist who uses the tools along with principles to create something nice, unique, and true to me. Thank you!
Never realized how McQueen also liked to reference Escher, but then it feels like it makes too much sense for his cerebral tendencies that it shouldn't be a surprise
Bit late here but that mcqueen dress breakdown was impeccable, you really explained why it works so well. I'm just reading gods and kings and my love for mcqueen grows every time I read a new chapter. Thanks a lot !
Thank you! I leaned so much from your Elements and Principles of Design. These two videos are exactly what I needed to master these basic art principles.
I love the way you dissected that last dress.... even though it was not one that I liked, I enjoyed your interpretation of it and explaining the proportion and use of colour and shape. Thank you. Very interesting.
So good to hear! Your comment reminds me of going to an art museum with my dad when I was a kid. If I said I didn't really like a painting, he would analyze it and show me what was great about it, all the things I hadn't noticed but which added up to it being a masterpiece. Thanks so much for watching! And Merry Christmas to you and your family!!
Thank you for doing such a well organized video on the Principles of Design. Your video will help my Fashion Design students remember the principles so much better!
Awwhhhh, Chukwudi, you have no idea how good your timing is! I'm just at my computer, bogged down in editing the next video, and your comment gives me the energy I need to GET IT DONE!! Thanks so much for watching, commenting and subscribing!
@@CatherineSews It is absolutely my pleasure. Well done on the new video you are working on. I am absolutely sure you will do a magnificent job, so don't put too much pressure on yourself, so that your don't ruin it and also get exhausted. Enjoy the process, so that we - your fans will love your work. Remember you are a GENIUS!!!👏👍
Hello Catherine, I really appreciate your explanations here. Could I ask for help in understanding how to build a design? How to add variety, interesting features, etc? Whenever I try to create a design, it's always bland and boring. I understand these concepts, but have trouble applying them. Do you have any advice? Is it just a matter of learning and practicing more? Thank you!
That's a great topic for a video! But in the meantime, if your design looks boring to you, it means you have too much unity in all of the elements. Try to add variety in a texture, or a colour, add an interesting seam line, or maybe play with the proportions. It's all about asking, "What if...?" But you might find that your style is simply more minimal and classic, and you don't need to add anything to make your design beautiful. Some designers rely purely on beautiful fabrics, perfect fit, and elegant simplicity.

I liked the incorrect usage of elements in almost all the cases. Just goes to show that just because you can do it "right" doesn't mean it's better. I mean, that balloon dress at the end is creepy.
@@emmaandrews459 I’m curious to know what you found to be incorrect, and what you see as the difference between “right” and “better”. It’s fine if you don’t like the McQueen gown. Definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, but it is a masterful piece of design as I believe my analysis shows.
@CatherineSews hi, so to clarify, I was just saying that some of the examples that you said did not have the fashion elements(such as the white wedding gown as opposed to the grey dress) were in my opinion much lovelier than the options that did have the fashion elements(such as the suit dress with the short jacket). That's my opinion, as I did not like them. Maybe some people do. But I find the fashion industry to be laughable as it seems like they're trying to one up each other on ridiculous styles. But yes, you did a good job explaining and I can see that while the clothing they created does have some thought put into it, I think it looks silly. But again, that's my opinion and I still watched the video because it was interesting how you went over everything. But I'm gonna wear a regular skirt and blazer and a normal looking dress. Good work on the vid, I wasn't trying to say anything rude 😊
