Hi Zoe, I’m in my late forties, I left the states to find myself and passion to sew and make clothes! But I’m not a fashion designer. My question is do you have any suggestions for people at my age who are just starting to learn and be a fashion designer?!
We live in very exciting times, to have access to information of this level from an all around Fashion Industry Profesional is priceless! Love the fact Zoe Hong that you mentioned the fact that from an early age you were drawn to drawing and so that developed into Fashion. Its great hearing that because life is a journey of discovery and so is ones career. Like I shared in your FCBK group the information you provide through your channel can't be any more accurate to what someone thinking of joining either school or work force will encounter. Once again thank you!
@@zoehongteaches I am also glad you pointed out that there are no classes for becoming the ceo of a brand its all a process and a collection of experiences ones acquires as one works.
You an amazing artist and teacher. I know very little about fashion, but enjoy learning about fashion as an art form. All of your videos are engaging and feel like they are made for everyone, regardless of their experience level, without being condescending. Also, your fabric 101 videos have been helpful in figuring out what I want in my closet.
I love the way your videos are shot and your voice overlayed. You don't ever have to interrupt your creative flow. I just enjoy listening to your voice and philosophies. Thank you.💕
I don't know quite what my trajectory will be but I know that as an artist illustration will always be a part of it because like you I have always done it. I love all the different types of fashion illustration, even hand done flats.
Can I say... Amen! I actually am sooo happy to have moved away from true design (flats etc) and have gotten back to teaching illustration to kids. It truly is a dream job.
This video blew my mind. In context, I am a young Colombian aspiring to acquire an undergraduate degree in fashion design. Although the textile industry in my country is vast, it is extremely competitive, and I didn't know where to start, especially I didn't know what kind of drawings would be necessary for my career. Now everything mentioned above is clear, I have defined what I want and what I need, thanks to this video now I can focus on that, learn and perfect it.
Not a fashion designer at all, but this video popped up in my feed so I watched. I was mesmerized with your drawing skills and taken in with your voice. I love audiobooks and could listen to you for hours. Perhaps another job avenue if you decide you need a change 😊
Thank you for addressing the insecurities and self doubt individuals have when approaching fashion design, love your genuine approach to create and foundation to grow, love you 🖤
OMG! You make it look absolutely easy to sketch! I just started drawing, I’m 40 years old. My whole life I told myself that I couldn’t draw for crap, and I started and seriously it wasn’t so bad to be my first and I am obsessed now!
Ooh interesting. I do fashion illustration purely for fun cos I like drawing clothing (and occasionally I'll actually sew something) so it was interesting to get a perspective on what industry professionals actually do.
You inspired me so so much! Honestly drawing has never come naturally to me and I procrastinate so I don’t have to fight my fear of failing hahahaha. Anyway after this video I will try to sketch something everyday no matter how I feel about it. Thank you so much Zoe!
Your sketches remind me of my Moms drawings growing up, she always sketched then sewed our outfits. I scored finding such a talented artist as you. Thank you Sweets ❤
I just found this channel today and im very happy I did. I dont foresee a future in fashion design, but I have always wanted to learn to draw and design clothing, just for personal reasons. And while Im not very good seeing someone else do it and explain it so well actually inspires me to continue with what I am currently doing.
I've also been drawing since I could hold a pencil and it's definitely been an advantage within fashion spaces but it's not the ultimate, you just need to be able to communicate your idea clearly. I've since made my own basic croquis and often change up the faces and certain details to make it new but it all stems from my template. It also allows my work to be identifiable as everyone has a specific handwriting and I use that to my advantage always. You don't need to know how to draw but omg does it help.
i graduated fashion school and i am so close to changing my career path. i genuinely love fashion illustration, and i want to keep fighting for it. i’m truly grateful for your channel! thank you zoe 🥰
wow . it was your voice that caught my attention. it's a lovely voice to listen to. love how articulate and passionate you are. I'm now looking forward to binge watching more of your content.
I am just learning this for myself, as a hobby (luxury!), but I still do full figure sketches for an ideas session - they are admittedly not very detailed and proportions can be amiss, but that doesn't matter because I got the idea for the garment down that was currently in my head, and if I stumble onto something that I really like and that I really want to make, I can go into more detail and draw a backside or embroidery details or flats by hand. No need for Adobe yet because I am the only person I am communicating this to... and designs really change when you are able to do something and sew it for yourself. I discovered that if you can draw but are not so good at sewing, it should not limit your ideas that you put down onto paper. Keep the sketches, in time you may develop the necessary skills to do what you imagined - also a great motivator in the "...how on earth am I gonna do that"?-direction. It pushes you forward, and your experience in practical sewing keeps things grounded.
all your content is amazing, genuinely the information given for free. I started to sew not long ago and just learning what I can and when and all your videos show so many tips
Your commentary is so useful...and honestly scales really well to other forms of design, which is crazy! Graduated from architecture school in May (bachelors) and figuring out what the hell I'm doing now...anyway I'm rambling but this is to say I've loved your channel for years!
This was the most encouraging and inspiring thing I have seen in a very long time. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom! The world should have more people like you. Sub!
Hi Zoe, I know you’ve heard this a million times, but thank you for creating great videos and sharing so much information!! I design clothes for women that are 5’ 4” and under and I’m looking to purchase your “Different Sizes Female Croquis”. Is this a “9 Heads” croquis?
I miss these types of videos from you. Muy creative and informational! You get entertained while learning about fashion. You are so talented. Just saw that you have a Patreon class! (Yes, I've been lax in my viewing).
Hi Zoe! I really enjoyed the video. I dreamed of being a fashion designer as a child (before I even knew what it was called 🙂) but I chose to follow well meaning but ultimately bad advice and not pursue my dream. I do not work in fashion, but I do still dream of having my own clothing line. I used to draw but I am very rusty, and I would describe my talent as having potential but still being raw. As per your video, I know excellent drawing skills may not be needed to design, but I enjoy drawing fashion and I would like to improve. To improve my drawing, do you think I should start with basic figure drawing classes or go straight into fashion illustration courses?
I'm really loving this topic about different kinds of works and illustrations works, do you know a reference I could learn more? a book? Thank you! I love you Zoe
i can do hand flats easier but im trying to learn digital figure it ll be a contrast to my hand portfolio so by having some versatility i figure i might better be able to sell my skills and flexability, Adobe is way to expensive but i use krita, and it works the same just free.
Thank you. I attended Los Angeles Trade Technical College for fashion design and Merchandising and some of them Never gave us this information about what to put into our portfolio. I'm like you I've been drawing since before kindergarten and I love it, that's why I went to design school. Looks like I have take a class in Adobe!
I can kinda sew and things are starting to fit now problem is getting them to look decent. And i used to draw dresses a lot but i have no sense of texture or structure. Drawing clothes has always been hard.
Hi, great video! SUUUPER helpful. Do you have any petite flats templates? If not, would you possible be open to making some? I'd absolutely loooove that and totally buy them:)
I have been watching your videos for years now and love everything I’ve learned. I’m currently making the switch from hand drawings to sketching my designs on my iPad using Procreate. I’m guessing all the coloring techniques still apply, just done digitally? Do you have any tutorials using iPad? If not, do you know a good source to find tutorials rendering different types of fabric on an iPad vs paper?
thank you so much your videos have been instrumental in my learning thru fashion school. i recently looked at the page on a portfolio titled "image map " I am not sure what it meant in terms of fashion, is it the same as the term used in photoshop? where you apply an image(texture) over a subject
If one decided to illustrate fashion with water based markers and/or student grade colored pencils etc., are streaking and paper white showing through bad things? I guess what I'm asking is do fashion illustrations need to be fine art or can they simply be sketchy illustrative and just do the job of conveying the message and concept? I'm not saying to present anyone with scribbles and scrawlings. They don't need to be museum quality pieces though? Also, do they need to be lightfast and archival quality? I would imagine the answer is no since they'll likely be scanned.
I was so mesmerized by your painting/drawing skills I totally forgot what you were saying
You can watch it again. hahahah
I watched it four times. 1 for drawing + saying, 2 for drawing, 3 for saying, and 4 for drawing again.
Wow. thank you hahahah
Aswear bah, I was looking for the face/ head lol🤣🤣🤣 It took mena second.
I thought that it was a pre illustration drawing 🤣🤣🤣🤣
You’re literally such an incredible artist if you ever get tired of fashion you could just do that
Aww thank you! I think about it sometimes...hahaha
Hi Zoe, I’m in my late forties, I left the states to find myself and passion to sew and make clothes! But I’m not a fashion designer. My question is do you have any suggestions for people at my age who are just starting to learn and be a fashion designer?!
"We are not made of magic, we are made of practice" yassss 👏👏👏👏👏 I'm gonna put this on a poster in my art room.
"I love you let's move on" is such a mood

Who does need fashion illustrations? I love illustrating, I don’t want it to get lost in the job. This is perfect thank you
Watch my interview with Marcus Kan on fashion illustration careers.

Everyone has their strengths but everything improves with practice. Good luck!

I started designing my clothes when I was in Grade 6, but it's a hobby that I enjoy a lot
Your channel is like a full college course! (Art school drop out) So much Gratitude 🙏🏾 Taking this *covid* time to tap back into this passion.
This is so spot on!!! I love your writing analogy! Such a good way to explain it! 🙌

I wanted to go into fashion design and chickened out. By listening to my negative thoughts about myself! Tfs❤️

Hi, I used to make dresses for Barbie and want to do something with it.
Please guide me what can I do??
How about other software? Like Photoshop or procreate ?? Can we use them or it have to be Adobe illustrator??
Hi , l like a fashion school but where is a better for me ? Can you say where your university please 🙂
Show, don't tell....same concept with writing....art is the language. Cool. I taught myself to draw to cure my panic attacks.
Do you know or have any tips for making a fashion collection based off a song? :)
