SPINAL TAP LIVE 1992 when things really do go wrong

- Performing 'The Majesty Of Rock' at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness Monday, 20 April 1992 at London's Wembley Stadium.
It took a while to get power to Christopher Guests guitar..leaving Michael McKean flapping in the wind in front of thousands and a few million watching live. This was not staged as you can see by McKeans increasing discomfort.. but fair play to him he got through it.
Raise your hand if you'd rather listen to Spinal Tap instead of G&R???
If it was 1989 gn'r, I take them. When they were hot
Anytime. I can’t stand Axl’s voice.
@@SIE44TAR100% agreed
GnR is such a clownshit band
"..so we will cut the set short by about 35 songs. We think Freddie would have wanted it this way."
How fucking brilliant is that.
Gotta keep that drummer - He managed to stay alive to the end of the song!
The law of averages say he would at least make it to car park.
At one stage The Tap held real life auditions for a new drummer, Mick Fleetwood showed up in a full haz_ mat suit and helmet
@@daneenmurf1043 when i read stuff like that (u put), I google & fact check as stories get distorted over the decades.
Anyway... it's close enough. Also turning up to that "auditions" (& bits of it on youtube) was one of The Banshees & one of The Go-Gos (they played the drums together), Mickey Dolenz from the Monkees (who could actually play the drums, perhaps not as well as who we hear playing then in the TV series & songs, but he could play).
The other Monkees eventually learnt to play for real, too.
Interesting that the Monkees & Spinal Tap have something in common - they both started as/in TV series.
Also, I don't know why some people suggest that Spinal Tap aren't a real band. Ozzy Osbourne believed the "doco" movie 'This Is Spinal Tap' was a real documentary about a real band. True story!
@@citybeatdisco19 To be fair Ozzys grip on reality is pretty weak
@@citybeatdisco19 Since you demand truth and facts look for This is Spinal Tap _ the official companion book to the film. It has the film transcript (the most of it was improvised so there was no script as such), song lyrics, the tap'istory which includes both fictional and real_life events in band and bandmember history.
Harry Shearers film and musical credits take up two pages !
Derek Smalls attended the London School of Design _ mostly because of the institutions initials
Did you know the album version of
Christmas With The Devil was meant to contain a backward lyric _ " turn the fucking thing around and play it properly you schmuk "
The genius of Spinal Tap is that even when shit legitimately goes wrong, people just expect it as part of the show, and it kills.
And to think 14 years later he would be a lawyer who is allergic to electricity
HAHAHAHAA oh my god
😂 fuck yeah !!!!
But man, he can still sing!
You think this is bad? This chicanery?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Just amazing that a “parody” band of comedians is better than more than half the real bands and handle a dead guitar in a major stadium with ease….pure PROS. Much respect! I saw them on the first gig of this tour at the Disneyland Hotel in a private show.
This wasn't a Spinal Tap tour; it was the Freddie Mercury benefit.
@@jamiebooth9645 Then...how did he/she do that?
Oh, come on, this was the most realistic spinal tap moment in the history of the band! Im sure Freddy's spirit was having a good laugh , and no drummers were harmed during the filming...
"The more it stays the same, the less it changes"
Profound...
The way Nigel has ALL the humbuckers in his guitar is so on brand, and Ill never not smile when David St Hubbins is speaking, or when Derek Smalls is playing his bass to stop and point at some random concert goer is the best, it's what dreams are made of. Best band's band band in the world
Four humbuckers it appears. He also has some sort of speedometer on it which goes up to 8 (I don't know what happened there). And four exhaust pipes. It's quite a gem, I looked it up to have a good look. It's a Music Man apparently.
I would say its a full boat.
@@MartinMaat Is it four humbuckers or eight single coils? We may never know.
I love the English! I mean really love your speech, bad mannerism, foul toothless, and swanky. Fu to pa, really having a gas, I'm on 19th and Schofield (imprope) have a pint tonite on me, no. Really you have to have a pint ( ON ME) UGH BOLLOCKS, WHAT WERE EE TALKIN BOUT? Jus sayin yall
Except that they are American actors.
“The more it stays the same....the less it changes!” (Poetic!)
I know, for I told me so,
The farmer takes a wife, the barber takes a pole!
deeply meaningful and deserving of reflection
These three comedians are really accomplished musicians. They can pull it off.
Yes, especially Harry.
Yes but usually they leave the pulling off to groupies after the show backstage.
Holy shit these guys are amazing at playing off how unbelievably awkward this situation is.
Well, they are professional comedians, with training in improvisation.
So meta...Spinal Tap having a "Spinal Tap" moment live in concert.
The most Spinal Tap moment there could ever be.
How are they not in the rock-n-roll hall of fame?
They make more sense than about half they've inducted the last few decades
Pretty simple really, it's because the ones on the RRHOF committee don't know their music genres.
Because the rock bawl is for the chumps in suburbia.
They are not in the Hall of fame, they are in the Rock & Roll Back-Passage of Fame..😂
They ARE in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are in there working as janitors, but still, they are in there.
Bravest man in Rock is the drummer.
You said it, I've lived it, scalped, shot, set on fire, I'm still here though....
It's South African drummer, Anton Fig, also known for playing in Dave Letterman's band for many years
@@AussieMysteriesKnew I recognized that hat...

"Thank you Wimbledon!" A gem right at the end! :D
The Tap! One of my favorite bands from the 80's! I play bass, on my resume Derek Smalls is listed #11 as one my influences.
It's Derek Smalls
@@weneedtermlimits huh?
it's Biggie Smalls
My baby fits me like a flesh tuxedo.
He goes to eleven?
This brings back so many memories, I am tearful , I was near the front left , it was an incredible day that will stay with me.
holy shit i see you there
Saying, "thanks, Wimbledon" at the end, beautiful.
Never knew they played such a huge concert.Rock On 👍🏼
The fact that Michael Mckean is nothing like Chuck in real pife makes me respect his acting even more
Spinal Tap better than GUNS N ROSES
I was at this concert and spinal tap were amazing they entertained.
Spinal Tap: the greatest and the best UNREAL band of all times! I'm still a fan!
How about Dr Teeth and the electric mayhem?
???
Steel panther is pretty awesome
The Digger In The Hole! Eight pickups on Nigel's guitar! I was hoping the drummer would explode into a green globule on the drum seat! It truly is The Majesty Of Rock!
only after they play his final show.
Isn't it four humbuckers?
I enjoyed that more than 99% of the music I hear in this genre.
There's a pulse in the new-born sun
A beat in the heat of the noon
There's a song as the day grows long
And a tempo in the tides of the moon
It's all around us and it's everywhere
And it's deeper than royal blue
And it feels so real you can feel the feeling
And that's the majesty of rock
The fantasy of roll
The ticking of the clock
The wailing of the soul
The prisoner in the dock
The digger in the hole
We're in this together... and ever...
In the shade of a jungle glade
Or the rush of the crushing street
On the plain, on the foamy main
You can never escape from the beat
It's in the mud and it's in your blood
And it's conquest is complete
And all that you can do is just surrender
To the majesty of rock
The pageantry of roll
The crowing of the cock
The running of the foal
The shepherd with his flock
The miner with his coal
We're in this together... and ever...
When we die, do we hunt the sky?
Do we lurk in the murk of the seas?
What then? Are we born again?
Just to sit asking questions like these?

And I'm sure each of you quite agrees
The more it stays the same, the less it changes

@@EattheApple666 Yes, but I couldn't understand a word the singer was singing here, so the jokes were all lost on me.
And their drummer survived!!
natopacific HAHAHAHA!!!!
Yes, but just though this song. He choked on vomit just after this clip - someone else's... as always
Love the comments about the drummer. My first thought was "hey the drummer survived."
"The more things stay the same, the less it changes." Uhh, yeah.
OMG! I remember being 18 and watching this on an MTV special, or something like that, and just laughing my ass off when they said we are going to cut our set short because we believe Freddie would have wanted it that way. I just absolutely thought it was the funniest thing……and re watching this over 30 years later, it is funny.
They only cut their set short by 35 songs... miniscule, really.
The fact that they are good musicians is one of the main things that made that movie great, if it had been just actors miming it would have been funny but them really playing put it over the top!
Yea we’ll Steel Panther rules now 😂😂😂
Agreed. The music is really good, too. It almost has to be to pull it off.
@@davidsellers3639nah, they don’t even come close to the greatness that is Tap.
"when we die, do we haunt the sky? do we lurk in the murk of the sea? then again, are we born again, just to sit asking questions like these?" LOLLLL i
quite a philosophy.
That,s quite deep actually! I'm going to live my life by that.
And why not?
so much talent in this band
After tonight's performance I think we're all going to have to call them "The Spokesmen" because they sing beautifully and they tell a fascinating story.
Battle Of Trenton - well, they used to be "The Originals" but there was already a band by that name, so they changed to "The New Originals".
Mitch needs to be on stage with Binky
Very good 👏
@@edpoe1108 They started as a folk band, the "Folksmen."
They sound better than most real bands out there today
What an original comment you deserve an award
This is also true on 2022!

@@davidallen346 I’m ok with that as long as they can find the stage and have the amps on 11 when jamming Stonehenge in Dubly!
"Got any requests? Get off the.. what?" :-D
This is awesome! Look at the size of this audience!
What an absolutely massive show. It looks like a music store onstage. Insane. I had no idea they were so big. That can't all be their gear obviously. That Tobias that Derek is playing is freakin sweet.
Its the Freddie Mercury Tribute show, about 50 bands & artists played that day
@bacongl, Tobias was a good brand of bass until Gibson acquired the brand and produce cheap versions under the Epiphone brand, which are made in China. Gibson ends up killing every brand of guitar they acquire.
What's even more egregious about the Tobias Brand, is that Michael Tobias had to take Gibson to court to be able to use the letter T when he started another bass guitar company, MTD (Michael Tobias Design). Far superior bass guitars compared to anything that Gibson currently churns out.
@@thabudmasterwas goin to point this out too, but you beat me to it lol😅
Michael' has the same pissed look as he did in the movie, when something goes' wrong.
Better than the rest of the bands on the support list. The performance and song I’m talking about.
Nigel's solos are still my trademark. . . .
He blew the fuse when he turned it up to 11.
Don't know if you heard Derek. The new amps go to infinity.
Spinal Tap teamed up with the folks at Toy Story to create an amp that goes up to infinity and beyond.

I just noticed another funny detail: Dave's TINY amp.
Thanks. Blink and you'll miss it. It is a Marshall, though.
RastaSaiyaman don't need a huge one. Keith Richards said use a POC tiny thing, and jack it up and mike it...

Haha! Thanks, I couldn't find it. They guys are several steps ahead in their humor.
Jaime Jacques Who’s that? You mean Derek Smalls, right?
David St Hubbins went into the witness protection program... to eventually become a lawyer at a firm in Albuquerque....
Nigel Tufnel became an indie filmmaker of "Mocumentaries" and Derek went into voice work in animated cartoon series.
"...the more it stays the same the less it changes..."
Thank you Wimbledon!!
Dan Stout BAHAHAHAHA!!!
"You can feel the feeling"
Spinal Tap were one of the highlights I remember from watching the concert live on the telly all those years ago
Even ad-libbing off script the English accents are impeccable. Over here 🇬🇧 had no idea they weren’t all Brits when we first watched the film. Still pure gold. RIP the Nigel Tufnell blueprint.
There are actually people who think Led Zeppelin or AC/DC or the Rolling Stones are the greatest rock band in the world. But if you're watching this video, you're obviously a person of taste, and you know better.
TAP RULES!
ericynot HAHAHAHA!!!
"I know for I told me so"..... Saw them on this tour in Orlando, got a Derek and David pick, sadly no Nigel Pick. Great show, they did all the gags from the movie and to top it all off, Steve Morse joined them on stage for Big Bottom!!!
Most brilliant band in history 😊
The more it stays the same, the less it changes-brilliant.
::applauds:: This is why I love youtube, so we can see past majestic, if you will, performances like these. Also - I see a lot of comments wondering who the drummer was. That's Ric Shrimpton, the twin brother of the late drummer Mick Shrimpton who appeared in "This Is Spinal Tap" and tragically died from spontaneous combustion. (Both are played by Ric Parnell, who was an established drummer by the time of the film, such as for Toni Basil's hit "Mickey". In the film Mick mentions having drummed for "Atomic Rooster", which was an actual band Parnell had been in).
The best sounding most talented fake rock band ever
Was deleted from the offcial release ... shame.
They opened as a three piece folk group to their own concerts, but no one recognized them and booed them off stage!
Devo once opened their own show too, and no one knew til later, lol
More pickups = more rock
Even though they are a fake band they are better than most real bands I see today on MTV live
They sold albums and toured with their own original work. They’re a real band and so were the Monkees. Hell, Fire Bomber is a real band and that’s a cartoon set in the future
fake band but they’re actually pretty talented musicians in real life
What makes them a fake bamd in your opinion?
Just that a band mocks a complete genre does not mean they are 'fake' in any way.
@@clausjahnel5379 It ain't fake if you're playing.
I would like to see Iron Maiden sing this song.
Anyone notice how many pickups nigels guitar has?
Eleven.

Four Dimarzio humbuckers. And his whammy bar is a gear shifter for extra overdrive!
And a tachometer to count how many notes he plays.
Wrong. It is a single humbucker with 8 coils... from Music Man Mr Horsepower's specifications.
The Tap though being in the biz for what seems forever…still cutting edge.🤘🤜🏻🐑
When spinal tap gets real. The moment couldnt have gone better or more right imo
The legendary Derek Smalls
It can't GET more MAJESTIC than THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the most "Spinal Tap" thing to ever happen to a band.
Worth waiting for …
i concur🫡
A fluke band like the Blues Brothers that becomes a GREAT band!
leodragonfire ..no...they started out as a fake band for a satirical movie that just grew into what it is... It’s all tongue in cheek fun.... :)
well, the Blues Brothers band was made up of classic R and B musicians, many of whom played on the original recordings and/or wrote the songs. Don't sleep on the Blues Brothers!
Great performance. Really wish they had done the completed version of Nigel's "Lick My Love Pump" as an encore.
"do-re-mi-fa-sol-fa-mi-re-fa-mi-re-do-mi-re-do-ti-do" - music doesn't get much more inspired than that! brilliant!
They finally got to play the Enormodome
But they still winding up apologizing during their set for something. At least it wasn't for that wanker Duke Fame and the Fame Throwers.
Except it ain't a dome lol.
"Have ... a good time ... all the time." -- Viv Savage
The great old Wembley looking amazing in the evening sun.Sad it only exists on TH-cam now.
These guys had a real Spinal Tap moment...
I like the 4 sets of double humbuckers in the yellow guitar. F-N sweet. I feel inspired by that alone.
After people die off. Future archeologists will find Spinal Tap videos and then think Led Zeppelin was a comedic parody
🤣🤣🤣
" so this bloke goes into this bar..., classic....just classic XD
What is really epic is they still tour...on occasion.
I saw some video where the 3 of them are so old they look like Peter, Paul & Mary onstage🤣
(I mean that in the utmost respect though, because I was an "opening act performer" for Peter, Paul & Mary at their final show in Portsmouth, NH in the mid 90's).🎶
To SEE "Tap" even NOW would be EPIC🎸🎶
When they took off their royal robes, and I saw Nigel, I thought "ABBA! In those clothes he looks like he's in ABBA!"
for a group that's satire they can really play!
cowtippingrocks I thought they sounded fkn awesome!
I saw them a year or two after this in a small outdoor venue. They consistently increased the volume throughout the show and by the end they were the loudest concert I've ever attended. For comparison, I've seen Metallica at an indoor venue a couple of times and to me indoor concerts tend to sound louder than outdoors. They weren't great musicians, but they were pretty good. They had a guest musician at every stop on that tour to join them on "Big Bottom", the guest musician on our stop was Adrian Belew of King Crimson...
That’s the problem, they are too damned good for a spoof band and some even describe them equal to and possibly better than some of the bands they are parodying. I’m not in agreement with this point because their contemporaries at the time were and still are great bands.
you should watch one of their interviews: "roger taylor called us and said come down, we'll give you some food and you can do one number, if not less. so we decide it on one number" haha
Quite majestic, indeed!
I think the problem may have been that there was a Marshall on the stage that was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf.
"Any requests??? Get off the What???" Gets me every time.
"The more it stays the same the less it changes" ??? Meaningless lyrics but so damn funny and good!! Nigels little solo at the end is top shelf and shows he can play so well and dead on and i wish i could hear some more of that.
I put Michael McKean in the American Treasure category.
It's a shame that this was omitted from the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert DVD. I remember the day well because I lived in Wembley at then time and could hear this from my flat window whilst watching on the TV with a very ghosty picture.
Yes bless the catholics and the bbc........jolly good yall
I've spent the last 33 years seeing him as David St. Hubbins but I swear right now all I see is Jimmy McGill's brother Chuck in his wilder youth no one knew about.
He's always been Lenny to me. Where is Squiggy, anyway?
Michael McKean is his real name. Though he has many aliases ;)
The way a stage should look.
There's nothing more irritating and embarrassing than standing in front of thousands of people, trying to entertain them while they fix something.
At least they weren't playing Stone'enge. These guys are as good as half the hard rock bands out there. And 1.25 times as funny.
That tiny little Marshall amp behind David (Michael) always makes me laugh.
I couldn't even see it until I just read that. Thank you for showing me how he got his tone!
so many pickups on that thing, lmao
Spinal Tarp ! Legends!
How could u not love spinal tap!
Thank you, Wimbledon!
One would think that in their great quest to find a drummer, they woulda just hired Squiggy🤷♂️
Who would have thought that Saul Goodman's brother was in spinal tap?
whats HILARIOUS is the actual song is better than most things that came out in that era :D
Fun fact: Nigel's been chewing the same piece of gum all these years.
It's no wonder he hated electricity after this
