The decision to portray the Air Force captain not as a domineering drill sargent type, but as an affable and hopelessly corny square, was such a great choice.

Fred would often incorporate rock and pop music-themed jokes in his standup routines. I remember being pleasantly shocked when, in the 1980s, he mentioned Seals and Crofts in one of his jokes. It was not putting them down; it was just that they were part of the setup.

Look at David at 2:42. Even as Nigel's getting more and more irritated, he's enraptured, like he's playing before 100,000 people at Wembley Stadium. I seriously think there's a message in that: Do what you love. Do it with passion. Do it with passion at every moment, in all circumstances. No matter who's watching you. Whether or not you receive any recognition at all for what you're doing. That's living life to the fullest.

    • @ACMusicland

Guys. I'll tell you a little story that went full Spinal Tap for a moment of my life. I was 15 and we had a band with some friends, we were playing heavy metal, powermetal and we did songs by Helloween, Stratovarius and Judas Priest heheeh. One day this guy calls asking to hire us for an event of a local mining company. We were for sure so fkng excited that we had gotten our first paid gig! We couldn't believe it. (it was like 20 dolars for each musician). So the day came and we went to the soundcheck and prepared fo the night thinking it was gonna be a full metal evening. It was 9 o' clock and we were in a room at the back waiting to appear. Suddenly the guy presented us to the public, we could hear him on the microphone. He finally named the band and we came out to the stage all excited and making noise starting a full blown metal song headbanging the hell out of our lives. Until I raised my head to sing the first lines (our vocalist was in another city and was travelling at the time to join us in the 3rd or 4rth song, that is spinal tap as well), only to realize our entire crowd were a bounch of 9 years old kids accompannied by their moms and dads because it was a fckng family evening where the company gives the children of the workers their christmass gifts at the end of the fckng year lol The story ends with lots of spinal tap moments like when the solo from the keyboardist came (our best musician we had) the cable from the keyboard failed and our keyboardist kept playing while no sound was coming out of the god damn keyboard, at the same time a couple of friends started to try and fix the cable, only to get it to work at the end of the most impresive solo we could offer as a band of which only the last 2 notes came out of the speakers lol. We just kept the show on even though nobody in the crowd understood what the hell we were doing. But the last moment is the best. We finished our last song with the most metal outro, and as soon as we ended the presentator walked on the stage thanking us for the show and presenting the next part of the event... musical chair game and snacks!!!!

I didn't even think that was possible -- I thought military radios were made to not be able to be heard on civilian aero sets, let alone step on civilian broadcast freqs. But there it was: Either he'd screwed up his frequency, or some mechanical failure happened.
(Radio engineering is a vast mystery to me, but I'm told that stray contact with a conductor will effectively change an antenna's length and shift its broadcast frequency greatly. If that's true, maybe that's what happened.)

Excruciating shivers when I watched this again! We were a classic rock pub band mainly doing Floyd, Zep, U2, The Who, Oasis.... our singer had a mate in the Royal Navy and he arranged for us to play a naval base Ball near Portsmouth on New Years Eve. The crowd were exactly, and uncannily, like the spinal tap scene. They were absolutely dead, with people sitting at tables shouting in each others ears, and a little polite applause after the first few songs. When we broke for the interval I was in charge of the PA music feed so I put together a quick song list and started with ABBA's Dancing Queen. Of course everyone immediately got up and started dancing. Imagine having to go back up for Set 2 .... especially since we opened it with Comfortably Numb. Fortunately I managed to not do a Nigel and throw my Strat down in disgust. As soon as the keyboard player gave them Auld Lang Syne we hit them with a rapid Mustang Sally (for the second time) and escaped. Never again. No weddings, funerals or military bases. Ever!

    2 things.
    1) David is clearly hurt about Nigel leaving. In fact, as conflicts go in the movie, it definitely leads to David drinking more, being disconnected, and really reevaluating his relationship with Jeanne.
    2) 37 people in the band 😂

This scene is the turning point of the movie. By this time, you’re laughing along at their misfortunes and how brutal the tour is, but this scene is where it crosses over from funny to sad. And youre already so invested in the characters that you actually feel the shame when Nigel slams his guitar and leaves. They got you right where they wanted you and let you have it.

When we started doing our mic checks, we found that our sound system was picking up the local radio station!
