I found myself voluntee-arly walking majority of the time taking in all the scenery around me. It felt like each step that Kratos took was handcrafted with such care like a grandma who refused to let you leave with an empty stomach.
I watched an 18 hour long playthrough on TH-cam (because too broke for PS4/5 and GoW) and it was worth every minute. The story and characters and everything are just insanely good, beyond what you'd ever believe.
It blows my mind that you guys posted the review for the last one 4 years ago. I found you guys with that or the original RDR2 review and ever since then yall have been my favorite channel, and that's saying alot because I love those Hacks at Red Letter Media.
I saw a lot of takes that 2018 is still better, but I honestly enjoyed Ragnarok more. The story and acting was top notch, but most importantly the gameplay just felt smoother. The puzzles were fun and not irritating like a few in 2018. And I didn’t get lost so much trying to clean up side quests. Maybe it was just my mindset while playing 2018, but Ragnarok felt like a more polished, enjoyable time. It’s my GOTY, but we all know Elden Ring is gonna get it, which I can admit, even though I personally didn’t like it
It's a good matchup for GOTY. Elden Ring had superior gameplay and exploration. GOW R has superior storytelling and production value. It really just depends what you value in a game, and that's not to say GOW R had bad gameplay. It had really good gameplay. But Elden Ring on another level imo.
@@maybeitsyou1317 I feel God Of war had better Gameplay But Elden Ring had better enemies designs. Elden Ring had good exploration at times but it honestly felt like there was allot of the same content. God Of War Ragnorock had the better side quests and Found the exploration to be better in terms of Intrinsic Exploration. Having allot content in World does not really make exploration good for me as Feel Like I am playing a ubisoft game when the world is filled with Items and Boss fights that are offten Repeated.
The gameplay was really good but the story pacing felt way off. You could tell they mashed 2 games together for ragnarok. The third game should have focused on the war. The ending of this game was super anticlimactic and disappointing. Not to mention a ton of plot holes
@@SteelWool567 meh, cory barlog decided to make 2 games, so he's probably right, the plot definitely has to fit too much with too little screen time but the alternative would probably be called milking a franchise and overdragging a story, i personally just fail to see the potential for a 3rd entry, maybe like 5 hours extra for gowr?
there's an option in the game to switch X and O buttons. Not sure why you guys never explore the settings. It was the first thing i did when I found out O was interact and X was dodge.
I played for an hour with the dodge button as X before I realized I could go into the settings and remap it. Then I spent the whole rest of the game occasionally hitting X to dodge like my thumb had gained new muscle memory in that single hour 🙃 Despite that, GOWR was the best game I've played this year. I really loved Horizon Forbidden West, but Ragnarok just absolutely nailed it as a sequel and culmination of a story.
It might have been the increase in Parks and Rec references or that I watched MY boyfriend play this game. This video was one of your best imo! Thanks for all the great content!
Just finished the story and came straight here, your reviews are always just what i need after finishing a masterpiece like this (also i appreciate the friends joke at the end and hadn't heard blood upon the snow yet so thank you)
I have been a very recent fan of this channel and rarely do I comment. But I love the segment in the beginning when talking about the GOTY award and Atreus is "Elden Ring" and then Kratos comes from the realm door in front of him like a badass. That's how I view this years GOTY award as well.
Haven't laughed out loud this much from a video in a long time. Great video as usual and I felt the same way playing this game...that it just solidifies this studio and this franchise as one of the highest quality in all of gaming. Incredible in every aspect.
Ragnarok was the first game I ever 100% on the way to finishing the story instead of going back to collect everything. They did such a good job making the collectibles discoverable along the way. The most satisfied I was playing and completing a game. I think about it still, truly the pinnacle of my gaming life seeing a character I grew up with, ascending into this new stratosphere
Oh boyyy, it was an insane game. One of the many I will share with my future children and want to become better with them. (also remapping dogde from x to o was the first I did in 2018 and ragnarok ( and that sweet option of auto pick up loot in ragnarok is priceless)). Ragnarok exceded our expectations and subverted them at once, this is pure magic of a game.
Had my wife watch this in hopes she would want to watch me play it and also watch me play GOW 2018 for a third time afterwards. Unfortunately my plan did not work but she did appreciate your pop culture references and video editing. Initially she said "Oh this is 8 minutes long?" and then huffed with a tone of disappointment. But in the end she smiled and laughed at your references and enjoyed the video as well. "To be fair" (Letterkenny) she does get motion sickness and I too would Nolan Cam her into a sickness detracting from the experience.
your rendition of faye’s theme is so iconic that when i played the game and the song came up, my brother and i never fail to sing “this is your dead mom~ and we’re gonna burn her down~” lol

@5:00 I’m sure I’m repeating what others have said but you CAN swap X and O around in the options menu so O is dodge and X is Interact. You’ve been able to do this since GoW2018, I know this cause that’s the first thing I did. Always check the options menu, people.
Please play Binding of Isaac. The basic plot is ‘Isaac's mother receives a message from God demanding the life of her son as proof of her faith, and Isaac, fearing for his life, flees into the monster-filled basement of their home where he must fight to survive.’ He fights them with his tears!
This story takes such a unique perspective on the self-fulfilling prophecy. There are few major elements that the story doesn't tell you will happen and it still surprises you and makes you emotional

For those asking about the music at the end of the video, "Blood upon the Snow" by Hozier/Bear McCreary. The part we hear in this video starts around the end. Going to be my new motivational workout music.
For me, while I 100% agree with this game being technically better than 2018 and basically being more of what we loved about 2018...I just can't help but feel that it's not as tight an experience or feel as good as 2018. I'd still have 2018 GOW above this when it comes to which one would I pick up and play again despite knowing that Ragnarok is just 2018 but bigger and improved, its a weird one to really put my finger on.
Agreed, Ragnarok started strong but got messy and bloated. There are so many good things about Ragnarok, but it makes it all the more frustrating that the writing, themes, and messaging were so all-over-the-place as the game progressed. GOW 2018 had such a tight story line that this game sadly couldn't continue. Big bummer, I hope Cory is in charge of the next one. His knack for themes, symbolism, and depth of writing were sorely missed here.
I know once i started using my full arsenal the way it was meant to be. Such as switching between weapons to buff each other due to status affects. It made combat so much fun. Also the ending lead up was pretty fun to. Some parts truly made you feel like a god amongst weak enemies and that's just as fun as the hard battles that kick your butt lol. I to had the to much sid questing and getting my ass handed to me syndrome to a few times. One of which was the dual mob boss you showed here. I activated that got stomped and proceeded to nope my way back licking my wounds lol.
Elden Ring was a phenomenon, that changed how we view gaming as a whole. God of War Ragnarok goes under your skin at every moment and set a new standard for character writing and story telling. No matter how I put it, no matter who wins GotY, the winners is us, we got two holy grails of gaming in one year.
I finished this last night. I think I like Elden Ring more because it doesn't slow down to give me exposition and it's way less 'fetchquesty'. Also, I prefer how there are so many options for builds that you can experiment with so many styles and can play the game 100% how you want. I still really enjoyed Ragnarok but Elden Ring is still my personal pick.
Still waiting for that NG+. I played it straight for 23.5 hours on its release. Odly enough GNA's boss fight was too easier, compared to Sigurn's. It took me approximately 40 tries to beat Sigrun but only 5-6 to beat Gna, granted I was already maxed out by then but I wish I had a tougher fight with her. My game of year/generation along with its prequel.
@@azarel7 Somewhat, because some/most combos from 2018 game were missing/replaced by newer ones in ragnarok. So I had to retrain my memory and moves, from scratch (I died once in almost every fight, so I had to lower the difficulty to "easy"). Now, granted that I fouth Gna on "easy" mode (if my memory serves), my concern lies more with the move sets and movement, attack and defence patterns, rather than the damage dealt/received and the like, that is controlled by the difficulty setting. So, you may be right or perhaps there is something else at play (pun intended). Either way, I love this game!

@@postupislilrodneysson9986 God of War is overhyped, Elden Ring is a much better game ;)
@@yavvivvay the only 1 thing elden ring is better at than god of war ragnarok is its weapon variety, Elden ring has a ton of weapons but they’re all shallow
@@postupislilrodneysson9986 Both are masterpieces. Elden ring is a generational game honestly. The way the made that open world design and the world mystery. But not for everyone. God of War Ragnarök is also amazing, but way more streamlined and can appeal to more people. Both deserve their praise. Also completely different games
@@postupislilrodneysson9986 I'll take Elden Ring.
I wish both communities could just rejoice that we actually got two brilliant games in one year, games that each scratch their own genre itch, leaving us satisfied.
Broo this game broke me AND mended me all at the same time. That ending was so hopeful and wholesome that I couldn't ask for more. I am so hyped for the next game.
5:00 This is why I was so glad and relieved that they let us swap the dodge button from ❌ to ⭕
I found myself voluntee-arly walking majority of the time taking in all the scenery around me.
Bunch of hack frauds over at RLM
Yeah those hacks can't act and have never heard of video editing
The humor in this video is impeccable. Laughed out loud multiple times. Thank you.
“This is no ordinary illness!” this destroyed me! LOL😂😂
there's an option in the game to switch X and O buttons.
Just finished the story and came straight here, your reviews are always just what i need after finishing a masterpiece like this (also i appreciate the friends joke at the end and hadn't heard blood upon the snow yet so thank you)
I appreciate that Kratos looks exactly as exasperated as Shelby with Matt's difficulty choices
1:33 Thanks to the carefully placed ads right at this moment, I realized it was actually "a head" 😂
Easily game of the year -- and one of our species' greatest artistic (and gaming) achievements.
Another great video as always Dunkey. KNACK 2 BABY!!
Watched this while playing GoW R! It is such a beautiful game
I have been a very recent fan of this channel and rarely do I comment. But I love the segment in the beginning when talking about the GOTY award and Atreus is "Elden Ring" and then Kratos comes from the realm door in front of him like a badass. That's how I view this years GOTY award as well.
I Love your videos . A different king of take in reviews
1st
I half watched my roommate play this and i still WEEPED at the end of the game. It was such an amazing game to watch!!!
Your videos are always so amazing! I’m glad you enjoyed Ragnarok as much as I did.
And thank you for having no TH-cam ads in your awesome video! Made my day. 😊
I’m less than 2 minutes in to your video (the first of yours I’ve ever seen) and I’m sold. Instant Sub.
Holiday Armadillo: I'm Santa's representative for all of the southern states
your rendition of faye’s theme is so iconic that when i played the game and the song came up, my brother and i never fail to sing “this is your dead mom~ and we’re gonna burn her down~” lol
Awesome!!! A year ago today Girlfriend reviews had a new video the day after my birthday and they released a new video again the day after my birthday. Shelby even wished me a belated happy birthday and I'm 100% sure she will do it again.
"My boyfriend loves getting stepped on" whenever I think you can't be anymore funny you guys prove me wrong.
@5:00 I’m sure I’m repeating what others have said but you CAN swap X and O around in the options menu so O is dodge and X is Interact. You’ve been able to do this since GoW2018, I know this cause that’s the first thing I did. Always check the options menu, people.
The jokes and references were amazing as always. Great video
Great video. I was the same with the dodge button. In the menu there is a swap X for O option. Saved my life.
I watched my friend play the game since i can’t afford a ps5. It was like watching a masterpiece film where he kept dying ON THE EASIEST DIFFICULTY.
I watched the cutscenes on youtube, and then all dialogues in the post game
I wish I watched the 15 hours version instead of 7
Omg. These edits are just beyond perfect. How do you do it so perfectly! Lol
It was so good I finished it and decided to play the whole series in Timeline order
I had been waiting for this video like a kid waiting for Christmas. Thank you for the laughs on this one and all of your videos.
I liked playing as Atreus. His fast speed and long range prowess makes me an awesome character to play over Kratos more slow and brutal combat.
He just plays like a more boring version of Aloy without the added strategy of traps and different weapons. Ironwood section is especially awful.
Please play Binding of Isaac. The basic plot is ‘Isaac's mother receives a message from God demanding the life of her son as proof of her faith, and Isaac, fearing for his life, flees into the monster-filled basement of their home where he must fight to survive.’ He fights them with his tears!
Morbius needs to be nominated for best picture. It needs an Oscar.
Best « the room » type movie?
The meme selection in this video might be your best yet. The seinfeld bit in the beginning had me rolling.
I love how two of Shelby’s fave games lets you play as a cat and play as a boy who can turn into a dog.
I’m sensing a pattern.
Dunkey enjoyer here. I'm now also a Girlfriend Reviews enjoyer. Glad to be here!
This game had a whole lot of onion cutting. Haven't played it yet but watched a good 15hr playthrough and wow..... It topped the first game
I still can’t hear the “this is your dead wife” music in game without thinking about those lyrics from the first review 😂
This story takes such a unique perspective on the self-fulfilling prophecy. There are few major elements that the story doesn't tell you will happen and it still surprises you and makes you emotional
the edits on this channel always make me laugh. Chef's kiss.
Love your reviews. Hoping Pokemon Scarlet/Violet is coming up, especially since it sold over twice as many copies in half the time despite all its controversies. Of course they didn't have to issue refunds for GoW:R either so it probably balances out. Lol
I'm just now finding your channel and i love it! I can literally hear you as the voice of my girlfriend while i did almost every single thing your bf did in this video 😄
Great timing, just finished the game! I with Kratos said BOI more often
My kid got me into playing it. It started as a mom help to mom let me play. So I had him do the fights and I did the puzzles.
god of war all the way, no question.
just compare the open world and the combat.
elden ring is the best looking souls game yet but it is just that...a souls game.
roll roll roll >> attack >> roll roll roll >> attack etc.
your editing is great!
God Of War Ragnarök is a masterpiece.
Elden Ring is Huge piece.
The result...
Two of my favorite games of All time no matter which one won
Okay also the Hozier song is the greatest song I’ve ever heard
Wich mythology do you guys want for another game ? After hearing mimir backstory I m hoping we get Celtic.
We’re hoping for ancient Egypt or maybe Hindu!
@@GirlfriendReviews Hell yes I'd love me Hindu mythology as well but the amount of controversy that would cause is unreal, so it would sadly never happen
For those asking about the music at the end of the video, "Blood upon the Snow" by Hozier/Bear McCreary. The part we hear in this video starts around the end.
Going to be my new motivational workout music.
What an absolutely amazing first minute and a half. Truly a fantastic intro!
1:54 lol 😂 that one got me laughing waaaayy too Loud at 3am
@@jt3061 that is greatly exaggerated but that's the gist of it
I was waiting for you to make this. love you so much.
As a wife of a gamer, I have one thing to say...
SKJALFA!
The Will Ferrell meme usage was brilliant - actually laughed out loud.
Wait what?
That dragon statue is an actual dragon?
I've been looking for that final dragon for ages
This game was incredible, the fact I got 100% just last night and this video releasing today was poetic, thank you for the content you create
Still can't believe I haven't played this yet. Great video!
I’m so ready for NG+
Are you sure though that it isn't easier because of the Sigrun practice/muscle memory?
I WANT TO WATCH THIS SO BAD!!!!! but I haven't finished the gameeee
That thumbnail is all wrong😐
I have been impatiently waiting for this video for weeks 😭😭😭😭. Im gonna save it to watch tonight
