    Pete. I think you do make great videos and I am a lisenced autobody tech. You could save yourself a lot of time and frustration by spraying 3 coats of polyester spray filler , it will fill everything, blocking it with 220 then hitting it with a smooth coat of primer surfacer then a smooth sanding of either 4-600 sandpaper. You are ready for paint then! And no shrinkage!!

    Thanks for the tips, I bought a 1990 ZR-1 last year and have to paint her. I'm an old bricklayer/mechanic, getting ready to be paint guy I guess. Paranoid as hell, I figure will just sand factory paint some and spray over that. Body is straight, although I see spider webbing is a couple places. Going to go for it, if I mess it up reckon I will redo it. 👍👍

    Thanks a bunch Pete. Very helpful. I'm considering replacing my heavily pitted original hood with a fiberglass one. They usually require some work to fit properly. Sometimes this means a fair amount of sanding which may get well into the actual fiberglass. What's the right way to do a job like that?

    I work for Epic Doors which manufactures high-performance fiberglass entry doors. We evaluated several paint suppliers including TruCoat 623, Sherwin Williams Polane 2K Acrylic, and Aquasurtech D200.
    We were looking for an environmentally friendly, single component water based paint that was super durable, had great adhesion and laid down smooth.
    Based upon our evaluation we selected TruCoat 623. It was much more environmentally friendly than Polane 2K and is a single component and TruCoat.Us had better adhesion than D200 and was priced better.

    Pete, I'm wondering if this would work: If I burn through the gel coat can I apply Dynaglass, sand it, epoxy, then high build primer? Would that prevent the spot from showing up through final paint and clear? Thanks!

    Thanks man. 3 times the fibreglass lotus has been in for work. 3 times cracking and blistering... every time I told them to do it by code, every time they do it like a normal car. Looks great for a year or so.

    • @BlatentlyFakeName
      @BlatentlyFakeName 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea mine has a few bubbles too. I think it happens to all of them after a while. It's best not to mess with it unless it's really bad.
      You need to use special flexible paint (and primer) for composite as well. Maybe they are messing up there.

    I had my corvette painted by a professional painter twice now. Looked great, pulled the cover off 3 months later and there's blisters all over. He said it was because there was grease trapped under the paint.

  • @mpikas
    @mpikas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    OK, sure, but what do you do if the 'glass is already exposed? You said a 2k primer/sealer won't work, what will? You showed the problems but no solutions.

    • @otallono
      @otallono หลายเดือนก่อน

      He doesn't know what he's talking about. Gelcoat is just colored resin. Same stuff the rest of the body is made of. Just with a pigment. The gelcoat is just as "porous" as the resin holding the fiberglass together. You don't need to buy gelcoat unless you're making your own fiberglass parts and want a nice surface. You could repair fiberglass with fiberglass resin, fiberglass filler or body filler depending on the severity of the repair. Working with fiberglass especially kit cars you're going to have a lot of exposed fiberglass.. so I don't know why he's making these claims.

    I use a tap test with a coin around the edges to see if it busts through. All those voids are from not laying the glass in the corners properly

    I am complete new to this but I had a question. I see a lot of videos of people when they first get the part. they coat the whole panel with a layer of filler. I am confused on the process a bit. So its gel coat, covered in filler, covered in primer, covered in paint?

    So if you sanded through the gelcoat, to help prevent problems you go to the boat place and buy 'gelcoat' and brush it on those spots? To re-seal the porous fiberglass?

      You can do it...
      Positive thinking...
      I am doing a 1985 Class A 13' tall
      31' long... top to bottom... by hand...
      ;)
      The last Travel Trailer I did.... I had painted it.
      it was very old but it was also metal... I painted it
      with a 4" brush... 3 coats.. with House semi-gloss paint..
      NO ONE knew the difference... it looked great... stayed great
      for years... ;) I even sold it for $3000. more than I thought I could.
