My String of Turtles Has Been Living in a Starbucks Cup

  • My peperomia prostrata has finally outgrown his venti cup, so I'm moving him over to a more suitable home :) I'm really hoping this cloche works because its my last hope for keeping this baby alive. Otherwise... he's gonna have to move into a trenta. Not sure why, but I feel like this cloche is not going to keep the humidity high enough. All we can do now is hope the plant is established enough to stay alive

since you asked for advice: if you're gonna have it in a south facing window with the cloche on it can get really hot under there, so watch out for that!

So interesting, my string of turtles just rotts if I put it in a terrarium environment,
Mine is thriving in mild to high temperatures, medium light (I keep it in an east facing window) terracotta pot & I exclusively bottom Water only if the turtles get thin & soft. Before it was a disaster 😅)

Yep, my phone is mostly pictures of dogs and plants 😁 You did a great job. I have a string of pearls that is now about 2 ‘ long I started by just putting a couple of little strings on top of the soil and keeping it moist until they rooted. Once rooted they don’t need much water. Be careful of your kitty and the plants. I know my string of pearls plant is toxic and can cause death if pets eat some. Love your videos.

If it helps...I have found the best way to keep my cat from a shelf or windowsill near my plants is to just put too many plants so there is no room for him to "land".

      You are exactly right!!! 😂😂😂
If I move a couple plants and they see an open spot, they think it’s open for them. So I guess it’s not just my cats, too funny

Im glad you took a chance to potted it. I bottom water mine. Its next to window, lots of indirect sun light, with the window open. I also live in LA and its doing well. I took your advice when taking plants out of the bag, so let it acclimate slowly. Im sure come winter ill close the window and prevent from freezing :-)

I saw you put yours in that cup and I ended up putting a plastic cup lid over mine and wow, it grew so much. I just put it into a plastic container I got from the dollar store. Still growing. I started with a few small strands and a couple pieces and it is growing like crazy now. So thanks for the tip.
I also keep pictures of all my plants, just to see how big they have gotten and to show uninterested people. 😂 My dog is also on my phone.

They aren't as fragile when they aren't super hydrated like that. Same reason one waits to do rootwork until the soil is dry, far less easy to damage that way.

Try it in Lechuza (or DIY Pon) ! I had string of pearls grow about 1/2" in a year, then I tried Lechuza and it grew about 2" in 6 months.

I got a 6in. string of turtles from pistils nursery, I believe. I keep it in a south facing window (medium to bright indirect light) and try not to let it dry out, they like to stay on the moist side so hoping after while the cloche won't be necessary. I also have a string of turtles, hoya curtsii, and variegated string of hearts that I put in a fish bowel and the string of turtles basically out grew everything else, lol. I like your black container, I also got mine from dollar tree (it's a car oil drainer container) and I use it to bottom water.❤💚❤💚

I bought a few little cuttings on eBay a year ago or so. I put them in a jar terrarium to get bigger and now I have 2 small pots of them.🪴 Great idea using the glass dome.

I love peperomia but this one I don’t have (because of how fragile) but yours looks great! Be careful when watering because you bumped it up into a much larger pot and peperomiashave tiny-fine roots and you don’t want root rot :) if you like the look or vibe of this plant I would recommend the peperomia Ruby cascade, not as fragile and grows really fast 😄 one of my favs!

I worry the dome will slide or tilt and harm the turtles . What if you stick some skewers inside the pot edge? Just a thought, I just got a good sizes string of turtles and am hoping mine will someday grow as big as yours. Great video!

I honestly don't get why you would keep some kind of peperomias like this in household humidity. Mine is living in my terrarium and it is the fastest ground cover ever after it had acclimated, truly thriving. Wishing you luck with yours! 💚

It’s weird how our Peperomia prostrata it’s like plumpy tiny miniature succulent which I love, I ask nursery about the watering he said just like succulent, I put it next to the window in my bathroom n only bottom watering once a week. As we knows how fragile it is, there’s a string fell so I try to find a way to propagate, I’m just scared if the watering or sun is too much for it.

I am glad you can work with fragile plants so well, sad to say I had to give up on fragile plants. The string of turtles is looking good now, I wish it the best of luck with the new home. Did you see the little cat pot I think that little guy didn't make it. I can sit and talk about my plants forever, people dont want to hear it either, I take photos of my trees some of the rally nice ones people will like but not the in training ones. A great vid, were you a little awkward in the start of the video? 😊
