Clips like this that are unedited are the best, just shows how plants lovers keep trying and keep creating. I love saving plants and watch grow again. Very rewarding feeling.
Girlfriend, RESPECT! I love your tenacity! Never give up. You’re a girl after my own heart. Start a project and don’t quit till it’s done. Good on you. I’m going to do my string of turtles right now. If you can do it so can I. By the way congratulations, your turtles look fantastic? Great job.
You totally can keep it in moss and plant it into the new planter! I have plenty of plants like alocasia and anthurium growing just in moss, including my purple plush and string of pearls. For the string of’s I just use a thin layer of moss to root the cuttings in a very shallow container so that the roots basically grow like a sheet (I use takeout trays) and once they root, I put down a perlite layer at the bottom and then plop the mossy root sheet on top. That way it roots into the perlite and then if you want to put it in soil, it’s easier to pot the perlite into the soil and the moss stays at the top like a top dressing. You can remove it if you want but I don’t because it’s such a thin layer.
I wish TH-cam would allow you to post pictures in the comments! I’d love to share it. I guess I’ll just have to start a channel… Lol I’ve been contemplating it!
So I trimmed my string of turtles to about 4 inches long when I repotted it. Then to untangle, I had no patience and I basically just used scissors to detantangle 😬. I used the excuse that they grow fast 😂
Just really love watching you plant and propagate all your plants 🪴 you’ve taught this great grandmother a lot and for that I thank you so much Melissa🙏🏽🥰 God Bless you and your husband always 🙏🏽 Happy Planting and Happy Memorial Weekend 🥰💚🪴💚
I recently made three cord hangers for plant pots, my first attempt at doing something like that. At first I was using the single loop of cord method like you did and was struggling a bit. I found that by putting some weight in the empty pot (I used gravel ) it became much easier to complete the hanger. Then remove the gravel before adding the plant to the pot. Ultimately I made my hangers using 4 lengths of cord, a metal ring and a few simple knots. I think this technique makes it easier to adjust for size, the balance is better and they take just a few minutes to complete. I hope this comment isn’t too long.
Hey Melissa, I was quite impressed with the DIY hanger...you're definitely a much more patient person than I am! And it actually looks great! And untangling those vines would have required nerves of steel 😆 But the results speak for themselves...one cute looking turtle planter with baby turtles 👏🏼👍🏼
I just discovered a plant I will never buy lol! You have the patience of an angel! I have a pet turtle (he's a rescue) and he wanted me to get one, but we're rethinking the whole turtle plant thing😂🐢
“I am in over my head” 😂😂😂😂 that chipmunk voice was so unexpected lmao, I died laughing!🤣 I was already sweating for you lol! That was too funny Melissa😅 love it! So happy you made this video, I still have my string of turtles in it’s original nursery pot. I’m so scared to move it into a bigger pot. After watching your video, I’m going to put a few cuttings in spag, just in case the mother plant doesn’t survive the transfer. Turtles and the string of hearts are the only string of anything that survived in my care lol. The DIY hanger - Genius! Cheering you on with that turtle fight and string lol Thank you for another wonderful video! 🫶🌷🪴
Great job!! That wasn’t an easy project but you aced it!! Love the hanger an turtle pot. I would of thrown the loose turtles in the top an see if they would of rooted. 💚💚😍
You did it!!! I was feeling that frustration, you handled it beautifully. Coffee looked yummy, somehow he knew you were going to need more than a small to get through that. 😂
As you are planning new videos, I would love love love if you could do a video later this season about returning your houseplants indoors after being outside all summer. My particular concern is my strings of… they seem to really suffer when I try to bring them back in. Summer patio exposure is West. Lots of sun.
Sure! I don't put a lot of plants outside but I'll definitely make a video when I do. I know light will be an issue with me because none of them are going to go back into my plant room where the good light is so I'll probably invest in a couple more grow lights. I'll have to figure out where they are all going to go too lol. It stays pretty warm here until November even so I'm going to try and keep them out there as long as possible!
It made me so anxious every time you acted like you were going to just toss all the fallen bits and bobs instead of propping them. 😂 I was like, “just toss it all back in the rot mush pot and forget about it for awhile!!!” 😂
I love it 🥰 I recently got some turtles it’s currently in a 2 in little pot I hope it grows like yours my husband also got me a little turtle pot for mine it’s a white sea turtle I just put my little pot in it for now not ready to repot it but I do want to hang it up like you did yours gonna give it a try. ❤
I had to prop my very full pot of turtles as well… moss looked like a nightmare so I mixed stratum, cococoir, and perlite together and out then in a shallow bowl like you had and it propped like a dream! Plus I didn’t have to untangle tiny little roots to repot. I think the most dreaded part is putting a macrame hanger on for me too. I haven’t done it yet, it’s all laying in my south window sill 🤣
You're very sweet .. a definite labor of love. ... I love my turtles too and it need serious work! I'd love to know where you got those shallow terracotta pots ... I'm thinking terracotta would be better ... Also, what's your recipe for your soil for the turtles and the fertilizer ... I use egg shells and organic coffee grounds in everything I pot, sometimes chopped up banana peels!
Great job, you always seem to work it out. You should try to let the turtle pot grow down into your bigger pot once it roots in cut it off that would make that pot even fuller and you’ld still have the turtle pot. Anyway great job you did, you have a great amount of patience, did you get a chance to drink your coffee?? 😊
You’re videos are so helpful! I recently bought a string of turtles and would like to repot it. Can you tell me what kind of soil that you use for them?
There needs to be some moisture or the roots that have developed will dry up so over the next few weeks as the soil is drying, I won't do a full water again, I'll just add some to the top couple inches to encourage new roots to form and then just make sure it gets really good light!
Peperomias of all types usually do great in sphagnum moss, so I don’t think you messed up by doing that originally. Like you said, it was near the dripping Hoya and attracted ants. I hate that aspect of Hoyas, personally. Like my Hindu Rope, it was blooming when I purchased it, and I read that you’re not supposed to cut the peduncles off… well, now we’re on bloom cycle three! 😂 So ants are a concern cause my Hoyas are all outdoor plants here in San Diego… I noticed certain hummingbird feeders come with a special attachment now, like a bottlecap-type thing that you fill with water, and it acts like a moat to prevent ants. It clips around the chord that the feeder hangs on. You can make or DIY a similar thing for plants, if you’re worried about ants crawling into hanging plants. Just use a bottle cap or preferably something larger that can hold some water in it… drill or burn a hole in it, with a soldering iron, then hot glue or silicone it to the hanging pot’s cord or whatever, if that makes any sense… it did in my mind. Lmao. And I’ve done it before.
Great job!! 😊👍 *Can you direct me to the round shallow hanging pot you said and showed at the end of the video you should had used because you Had another!!? Thank you in advance! *I checked all your links and could not find it.
Question how the heck i can clean pon that have lots of pieces of small of root rot i mean lots from diferent plants been trying to wash them but is too much and i dont want to throw it out cuz is not even 1 yr old that i used that pon im at the point to tbrow it away😂😂😂😂
I'm not sure how to clean pon yet, I haven't used it! I still have so much to learn with it! I feel like that would be a lot of work to get all the small roots out of it. I think I would pick it out lol.
I love my string of turtles but hate repotting everything string of. They do grow fast. I’m currently battling ants in a window with Hoyas (no blooms) and my turtles. I was actually thinking about your ant story today and then saw this update. You could drill holes in the turtle planter and make it a hanging planter.
About how many months was it from the time you got rid of all the ants? I’ve had turtles propagating for SO long and they barely growing! Also, where did you have that little plastic tray stored while those ones were propagating?
I think it's been a few months now. I had the main pot under a grow light and the tray I just threw it under my moss pole shelf haha, it didn't get the best light so probably why I had a lot of rot going on in there.
I would just cut them off as long as I could and use cut them off even. As fast as they grow, you’ll have a long set of strings before you know it. I’m very impatient about straightening strings of things.
@@plantsbymelissa yes I meant after u get the roots coming and pick some moss off you could just lay the remaining little bit of moss because it helps with the humidity with all those beautiful bountiful turtles u have they love that moss lol. But I am gonna keep watching to see how it all turns out best of luck to you 👍✌️
Clips like this that are unedited are the best, just shows how plants lovers keep trying and keep creating. I love saving plants and watch grow again. Very rewarding feeling.
In the beginning I wanted to redo my turtles but by the time you got to the end I was thinking differently lol . They look really good 👍
lol thank you! It got very tangled but happy it was finally all done.
Great job.
Girl, I feel ya with planting the props up and cleaning up from a turtle like yours lol. Your a champ and it looks great ❤

That turtle pot is so adorable!!! You did such a great job on potting up your propagations and the diy hanger 💚💚💚
Thank you!! The pot is really cute! I'm glad I was able to get one to do for this plant ☺️

Lordy! I was a nervous wreck watching you! Hahahah! Great job!!
Girl, you have SO much patience. I would have just dumped the whole thing in the new pot.
💚💚💚
It's so cute!!!!!
beautiful plants 😍😍
Great job! I really enjoyed the propagation and the diy project! Take care!😊
Thank you, Cynthia!!
Lay the shells on the top to grow and fill in the bare spot in the center.
They have your turtle pot in the Target app. You did a great job 😅😅
You may not have, but I had fun watching 🤓
You did it!
Yes!! haha so happy to have it potted back up. I can still see the ants so I think it scarred me lol.
Loved the video!
Could you share with us what you keep in your white cart with a cart tour?
Thank you! I'll have to share it in a video soon! I shared on insta but I always forget not everyone follows me there 🫶
Good job very nice

haha a lot of it got watered down but I had most most of it! 🤗
You’re videos are so helpful! I recently bought a string of turtles and would like to repot it. Can you tell me what kind of soil that you use for them?
I was wondering why you would repot first and then do the hanging part after but it’s nice
It probably would have been easier doing the hanger first! 😆
Oh my bless you
haha it was relaxing until the string came into play 🫶
You’re so patient! After removing them from the wet sphagnum it’s ok to water the soil right away? That doesn’t over water them?
There needs to be some moisture or the roots that have developed will dry up so over the next few weeks as the soil is drying, I won't do a full water again, I'll just add some to the top couple inches to encourage new roots to form and then just make sure it gets really good light!

It's from www.theplantdrip.co It's a couple years old now :)
Thank you so much Connie!!
You should make another pot with those little strands .....

If it’s growing well in moss, why repot it? Just curious
I wanted to put it back in soil to grow because I love soil! I don't plant in moss for long term :)
I looked at my string of turtles once and all the leaves fell off
😂😭 oh no!
❤❤❤❤
I would just cut them off as long as I could and use cut them off even. As fast as they grow, you’ll have a long set of strings before you know it. I’m very impatient about straightening strings of things.

Note to self...put the hanger on before planting the turtles 😂
U should just put that on top of the soil and let it root down in it.
That’s what i did with my string of hearts and it worked great….
@@jessicapetrin1655 yep that's what I do also
I didn't want to :) I prefer to have some roots first but definitely do what you like and what works for you
