its funny cause none of the shit explained here matters. The Ralliart looks worlds better, and you don't see one at every fucking street corner. So sick of seeing WRX. There's 1 ralliart for every 20 WRX. same goes for evo / sti.
The ralliart makes power so much easier, with a couple bolt ons and or tune, the ralliart is faster / as fast as evo.
So true... WRX are scattered around like Mustangs in my area. I've seen less Ralliarts than Evos honestly.
I have the 2010 Ralliart and I Love the car... but I wouldn't say anything bad about a WRX... they are fantastic as well. I have better summer tires than the stock ones, boost pill, high flow cat and dual cat back exhaust with a performance chip and it goes plenty fast for me :)
Hmm, from all the things I've been reading/watching, it seems like:
WRX > Ralliart
STI < Evo
It sounds like the wrx tires won and the lancer tires lost. Thats what deals and monopolies get you.
+Ko-wing wong i know they need to pony up a few bucks and run the same tires on the cars even a great car with shit tires wont perform
Sorry but that WRX is one ugly bus! Id take the Ralliart on looks alone.
then all you would see is the subarus tailights
Josh Winn Actually you are incorrect, the age old Ralliart has a 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds and is slightly quicker than the "new improved" WRX. The old WRX was far and away quicker than this newer one.
+buildmorefarms100 thats where your wrong lol motortrend got 4.8 sec 0-60 and car and driver got 4.7sec....slightly faster than the sti version for low end....so here is no way in hell stock for stock the ralliart can keep up
Josh Winn You are quoting the old WRX with the 2.5 liter motor. The newer 2.0 is much slower. high 5's
+buildmorefarms100 why r u comparing 2015 wrx to the ralliart...this vid is about the 2009 and still the 2015 wrx hit low 5s 0-60
I forgot how ugly the 2009 WRX was. The facelift definitely helped
I have owned a 2010 Ralliart for nearly 20k now. In a "real drivers" arena, this car was/is an underdog. I make WRX's look like they are running bad gas in Solo cones.
On the same tires (Kumho XS) the Ralliart was not only a more grin winning car, but a faster one with a local consistent winner in the local SCCA Solo Stock club to his WRX. Though, he does bleed subie blue so it's no talking out of him. I'm just saying is all. Real World Comparo.
Ralliart vs WRX? WRX!
EVO vs STI? EVO!
If only the lancer had a manual option.
ralliart so handsome til now 2019
I would have consider a Ralliart if they had decided to offer a manual transmission. TC-SST is still an automatic in my book and nothing beats having a 3rd clutch. There's a reason why the WRX is more popular. It's cheaper, have manual transmission and faster just like what the video says. Evo GSR has it, but it's another class and out of my price range.
I'll go with the Lancer. Hands down :)
I don't track my cars often if at all so for me id never see the difference between the two. Sti handles well enough but I didn't need all that so im getting a WRX anyways. To each his own. I prefer the subaru but I do know that mitsubishi made the better performing car. I love subies but I do know the evo is one hell of a car.
I did not & by the time you figure out what I did there, I'll be saying this.
I didn't say that "4D63" are prone to failures, I said "4G63s".
You see, 4G63s are more prone to failures than EJ20s in normal operation.
Beef them both up & anything can happen.
Btw, the new WRXs have 265bhp & the Ralliart Lancer (4B11) has 235bhp.
i work in an auto shop, and i just bought an 09 WRX (not sti). i freakin' love this thing. not only does it look good, but it drives amazingly. corners incredibly well. but i got to try and EVO out the other day and it was siiick. I can't wait to upgrade my car, but I've only got 120 miles on it. I need to break it in before I start messing around with it. Both companies make great cars, but if you're going to get a Lancer, go EVO not ralliart. wrx>sti way more mod ability w/ forkingcash
edmunds is really good! recently traded in a 02 impreza for an 09 wrx265 the new modle is much nicer, but there is more body roll/ soft suspension through the corner just doens't feel as natural the 02. it has more juice for sure. 1500km :)
@xbxspartan it's got a dual clutch automated manual which is usually shifts faster than a manual. it's also the driver who decides when to change gears
I think a closer battle would be if Mitsubishi used their 4B12 engine in the Ralliart rather than the 4B11. Then it would be a 2.5L vs. a 2.4L.
Yup, it's made that way. If you want to make it fair. Why not make them both 2.0l right? Not enough? Why not race both lancer with 2.0l? You've seen ZR1 race the GTR and not much complained. Do you get what I'm saying?
I think the new style looks great, i love my 2009 WRX
They were at a real track. The slalom was done on a skidpad and the 1/4 mile was done on you guessed it, a Drag strip! The need a skidpad to do proper slalom and break distance specs that are fair. do you know a track that incorporates a properly spec'ed slalom? and break test? AND 1/4 mile from standstill? because I don't.
Um, how about no.
Did you know the impreza is also the base for the outback? So you are suggesting there should ONLY be an STI and not an WRX or outback, etc.
You buy what you need and what you can afford. The STI gets 20mpg or less where the WRX gets high to mid 20's, the outback is slightly higher. So there's that to think about too. Also, insurance is vastly different between the cars.
Sorry, I was thinking more of the big difference in braking distances. Proper tires on the Ralliart would have closed that gap to almost nothing. I still believe the Ralliart would be a very fast car, faster than the WRX, in the corners and on a track with the right tires too. And 0-60 still means nothing.
What do you need to repair? I'm at 60k miles with my WRX, 40K at 'stage 4' and I've never had a problem. Repair cost on the suby shouldn't be an issue.
I have made valid points, items you asked for. If you don't know the trim levels of Subaru WRX, I'll let you know. Base is includes standard items. Premium has the sunroof, 6 disc changer with speakers and heated seats. The STi has different engine and transmission components. Your writing reveals your maturity level, I understand now it was a mistake to engage you in intelligent conversation. Please join a forum like NASIOC and check your info before vomiting your bias here. Thanks.
idk man... dropped in a boostpill in mine and it's pushing 0-60 in about 4.8 secs...
And automotive mags dont do that, unless a special test it's always about comparing what you would get pulling off the dealer lot to another in the same state. While lots of people tune their cars the idea is that theoretically the mfg has mated the best tires it can find for the car given the pricepoint so you want to compare the showroom presentation of each car. Once you change tires you might as well add some springs to the WRX which would probably add maybe an mph to the slalom time etc
I found the Ralliart to be stellar but I am 6ft / 200lb and for me that seat was brutal. Unless you are a fair bit smaller than me that seat is like putting on shoes 3 sizes too small and it has inexcusably no adjustment. Celica’s had bolster adjustments 30 years ago, c'mon. Love the car but the seat is a deal breaker.
Visually, both the WRX AND the EVO looked better before, the previous few models. The new looks are..something to get used to, while the older looks are just captivating. And more badass in my opinion.
i test drove both and would prefer the wrx :)
i still think both cars (same as evo vs. sti) are close enough make it mostly preference.
@FormulaDStock The 2009 subbies came with 225, not 235. The 2011 is 235 now. The ralliart always had 215. That being said, aftermarket rims are pretty much a given in this type of cars so honestly what tires you start off with isn't that big of a deal...how wide of a set of tires you can squeeze in is. Both chassis can handle 255 tires with spacers without having to roll fenders. So yeah rather have a good AWD system that isn't easy to upgrade over rims which are.
@joshuagregorio the j spec sti has forged pistons whereas the US spec doesn't. also worth mentioning is the engine response on the j spec
Oh.. I'm not saying you can justify it... I'm just saying it goes around the track faster..
I think the STi looks friendlier... but it doesn't really matter... They're both amazing vehicles.. and i'd take either..
The arguments on these videos are always quite over-the-top. Well done, Mitsubishi and Subaru fanboys-and-fangirls. I personally love WRXs, but hey, the Mitsu looks like a blast to drive, too. It's just a matter of personal opinion. In fact, the Legacy is MY personal favorite of any car. Not for speed of course, but just for being a good, well-rounded sedan.
Yeah, comes down to your price range. If you can afford an STi or EVO, get the EVO, if you can only afford a WRX or Ralliart, it's easily the WRX. But really unless you're really planning on doing a lot of track time, it comes down to personal preference being that the cars have the same purpose and do them well.
now while subaru drivers have richard burns and colin macre, you cant forget about tommy makinen, who won 5 times in the rally chamionship in a row, while the grand total for subaru's wins total to 2
09 WRX was everything the 08 WRX should have been! I just saw the 2011 WRX while getting an oil change and it badass!!! It comes with leather seats and the front flared fenders of the 08 STI. It looks great!
i own a 09 wrx with spt exhaust which adds 10 ponies, and have driven all others in its class. the choice was clear!
i still think the lancer is better because of the twin clutch system. it makes the difference when u drive and u dont have to change gears.. however you still can if you want to.
yup i agree did you see the suspension just sit down on its but as it accelerated off the line :O
Life is too good to get worked up over fog lights.
I would be surprise if Ralliart won't get improvements. WRX dominated Ralliart on every category of test. I guess the price was decided with neat technologies such as its transmission and awesome differentials. Too bad it didn't measure up to better numbers in tests.
I don't know why the words "STi" or " Evo" is in any comments about THIS video? This video is about the WRX and the Mitsu Ralliart.
On the point of YAW, put a system like that in an STi & watch the game change a lot. Without YAW, Mitsu's system understeers as hard as a WRX & both cars have to be driven very similarly.
You see, Subaru works on make it's cars more driver focused & involved. Always has. Ask ANYONE who's ever truly driven both an Evo & an STi (I have) & they'll all tell you that you need to get involved with the Subaru much more.
On shifting, don't get me started on the Mitsubishi's Playstation shift paddles...
Im a fan of both the EVO and the STi. I dont know how someone can hate one and like the other. They are very similar to each other..like cousins. But like i said before, its your personal preference. But in my opinion the STi is a BEAST but a controlled one. The EVO on the other hand is basically a freak of nature (in a good way). The EVO is like that friend that has a really bad influence on you. It will make you push and push and do stupid things, that will leave a huge grin on your face
It's almost 2009 and I still don't like the WRX. The WRXS (UK) looks better but that's about it. I'm ready for the next generation; I'm sure many Subaru fans feel the same way.
Why are people talking about the EVO and STI on a WRX vs RA video?!? You all know that there is quite a bit difference between the litte and big bros right?
Yup the Evo is faster than the WRX but this is a comparison between the Ralliart vs WRX. The new WRX weighs like 1380kg for hatch or sedan with 265hp (Australian version). The ralliart lags hard behind in both weight and HP. I doubt that the Ralliart can do sub 5 seconds 0-60mph. Not saying the Ralliart is a bad car but it's a fact that the 2009 WRX is better than the newly revived 2009 Ralliart Lancer.
Yellow light is more effective when driving in snow. Don't know where you're from but if you see a car with yellow fogs in say... Florida, then yeah that's rice.
I am not familiar with the eclipse sorry. We don't have that here in Australia. Australian sedan/hatch Mitsu range are Magna, Lancer and Colt only.
No, they even said the Tires are the BIG issue with the Ralliart.
I didnt see any wheel spin so what makes you think better tires would help? 0-60 means a lot actually...
both are nice cars, but its impossible to justify the evo over the sti, the sti is cheaper, yet faster, nicer interior, same brembos, doesn't guzzle gas as badly, and in my opinion, the subie looks mean as hell
Without a doubt, the WRX is the faster car on the straights. And with the 5spd gearbox, there isnt much inside the car to pay the extra $3,500 for...other than the amazingly better looks, faster (auto-paddle) Dual Clutch gearbox and standard Mitsubishi technology. I drive a 1st gen. G35 coupe and and looking for AWD up here in Chicago. I want to go with the RalliArt maily because it just looks better and performance is not very hard to build these days.
All in all, both the Ralliart and the Suby are very good cars. Theres no wrong choice. Both have their pros and cons. Its basically its your personal preference when it comes to buying one of these vehicles.
I think the only reason the ralliart never came with a manual transmission is because would of compete against the evo that's the only reason the ralliart has its tune limited cuz of the tranny
evo mr had the same trans. Theres plenty of ralliart drivers that have the same power as evo drivers and the fastest 1/4 mile and half mile time ever set with the sst trans that the evo and ralliart share is set by a ralliart, but you're right because if the ralliart had manual im sure gsr sales would have been poop.
Stock tires always hold back Mitsubishi in comparison tests. The Eclipse and Galant still use the Goodyear Eagle RS-A's which weren't even good 15 years ago for goodness sake. Just stick some Michelin Pilot Sports on there and it will TRANSFORM the car.
i got the premium package, and i'll be honest, the sound system still leaves a lot to be desired. but i don't plan on keeping the original anyway, so it's somewhat irrelevant to me
I agree. Auto is dumb. Although the 6 speed twin-clutch gives the car insanely fast shifts, I'd still take the GSR 5 speed manual over the MR 6 speed auto.
the wrx has a 2.5 litre engine and the lancer has a 2.0 litre so i think its good that the lancer can keep up with a bigger engine. i personaly like the 08 lancer evo x more than the ralliant.
where did you come up that they are no longer offered in a hatch?
they are still selling both hatch and sedan
Agreed, personally I wouldn't buy the Subi cause it's just too boring I think. While I like speed, I don't go to the track very often so looks are a bit higher on my priorities than performance.
Performance wise though, the Subi is a much, much better car. I'm not really sure why Mitsu did what they did with this car, it can't even really compete with it =/
Ouch. The suby is toe-ing the line with Saturn looks with those random body lines (especially in the tail lights). It looks good from the front but bummer over all :/
Awesome ... I love the Impreza .. maybe the Evo X Looks better , but with a Wide Body Kit on the Impreza .. it will look Pretty .
LOL... did he said 2.5L? a 2.5 boxer against a 2.0 in line? seems to me that Ralliart has better performance then... its heavyer yes but because it has more luxury, thats why it stops in a farther distance... ill go for the ralliart!
Put tires of equal quality on both cars and run it again... Mitsu might not win, but it would be a helluva lot closer. I think the Ralliart is underrated, people knock it for the price but forget to mention that it's a technologically superior car that just needs better tires.
The Ralliart looks cheap with the chrome silver grill. Sad that it only came with a dual clutch automatic transmission. That is why the Subaru Impreza WRX and Honda Civic Si was the clear choice for family men that wanted a fun and reliable daily driver to get to work.
@loweredtalon
im not sure what place your going to , to get the lancer tuned, but after a ecu flash and a boost pill, the ralliart becomes a little more powerful than a ralliart. im not sure where your getting your info from. by the way that tune/ecu flash etc.. i was talking about brings it close to 300hp. so have a happy day ;)
You don't even need to see what car they're comparing. 235mm tires on the WRX have way more grip than 205mm tires on the Ralliart. That's almost 5 inches of extra tire on the ground! Even if the WRX had the same horsepower/ torque as the Ralliart, the WRX would still win because of the grip from the 235mm tires. Mitsubishi should have ditched the advanced AWD technology and went with wider tires. Good job Subaru for being smart.
Which is odd because a fwd Srt4 is 0-60 in 5.4 so ahhhhhhh lol
This vid looks great in High quality nice test
I agree...though the new 08+ Impreza isn't a very attractive car, even in it's fender flared STi form.
not to mention how annoying the differential set up is in the eve compared to the STi
During the tests, the Subaru driver is better than the RA driver. ;)
2:53 Is it me or does it look and sound like the driver in the RA is pump braking while the Subie driver seems to do a one brake stop..?
The result doesn't suprise me!
I test drove both cars and WRX was better in EVERY way, thats why I bought it!
2011 wrx makes the gap even wider. Evo is a great car if you want hemorroids and back pain. Awesome performance but Mitsu can't make a daily driver. If you go to the track every week get an Evo.
Hasn't always been, old Sti's are faster than old evo's, but when the second gen chassis came out evo's took over.
Both are good cars in their own respective ways.
But basically, the Lancer won for looking pretty while the WRX won for being a good car.
@akabane1984
FYI, the Ralliart has an Active Center and does not include yaw. You were referring to the Evo. But I just wanted to make the point since that's what the Subie fanbois always fall on. Don't try and skip the fact that even without AYC, the Mitsu AWD system as a whole still makes you sad.
sorry i still go for the ralliart.. its so much more fun to drive. Yes i test drove both.
wrx is better but ralliart looks better :P also the ralliart is faster is it goes in straight line over time it gains cuz the TC-SST has lightning fast gear changes compared to the wrx which takes time to shift...
@92longj it beats the evo in price. but it handels softer than the evo and doesnt accelerate as fast. so what you're saying is that the sti beats the evo? how? in being more comfterable?. in that case, why dont you just buy a big, soft mercedes?
Level the playing fields! The WRX has more horse power and its lighter than the Lancer. If you put equal HP on both cars and same weights, lets see what happens.
For me I like the Lancer.
mitsubishi rules
Did you buy the 08 or the 09?
Also how do you like the car so far, im looking into buying one and im just trying to find some input
Yeah, but the IX is better, sorry, but a lot of cars beat the X.
They should just give the fans what they want and offer a 6 speed manual.
i am not a hater but IMAO the ralliart is better looking than the wrx put some bolts on on it,boost pill and ECU flash it will be a beast on the road
i've seen an sti tuned liberty (thats what the legacy is called in australia) it looks awesome, pretty cool cars for a family saloon i agree lol
my bad I meant Hyundai Proving Grounds. It's in California.
@sortmasivci Sadly, the subbie is faster out of the box both in the straight and the turns. The mitsu will drive a lot better if you replace the tires (which you gotta do eventully anyways) then the subie in the turns however. The subie has pretty mush suspensions which is quite expensive to correct. The mitsu has crap tires, which is quite easy and something you gotta do anyways. The RA is just plain more fun in the turns.
if you take the garbage 7" wide wheels off the lancer, and put the subbie wheels/tires on it for a comparison it would definitely win.
lol My neighbors have 2 tricked out Ralliarts.
Why do you guys test on a parking lot and not a real track???
why don't you just buy the STI or EVO versions of these cars?
The evolution would smoke the living crap out of it. Thats going to be my dream car.
I like the look of the Lancer much better than the new WRXs, they look a lot like Honda commuter (accord/civic) cars now :(
agreed...I sorta felt like hurling many times during this video.
1:Funny, because I raced my old 'L' around some curves a few times (mind you, N/A 2.2L) & nary a turbo Eclispe (pick one, doesn't matter, you'll fail) could catch me. Granted I had Whiteline/STi all over my suspension but it didn't matter.
2:I've worked on too many cars to be able to say this: THERE IS NO MITSUBISHI THAT'S AS RELIABLE AS A SUBARU. PERIOD. NON-DEBATABLE.
3:Ralliart does not 'own' an STi. Get off of that already. It takes an EVO to beat an STi but the STi is more driver involved.
let's be honest....there isn't much that competes with the sexiness of the evo 8/9 nowadays
Well auto isn't dumb, much more efficient than I'll ever be but it takes away from the experience. And that depends on the EVO like thats the newest gen.
Well if you compare a 2.5L to a 2.0L, yeah, the 2.5 is going to be faster. Although it makes less torque and worse gas mileage.
