  • Hello guys, and welcome back to Car Obsession. The Ford Focus ST is a car I've been waiting to do a proper review on for some time, but when the time finally came, it didn't quite go to plan...
Sadly, on the day I filmed this video, one of my cameras got stolen, which has had a large impact on this video as I lost a lot of footage.
However, I've done the best I can with the footage I have, and I've also used some footage from Ford UK, so I hope you enjoy the finished product. Anyway, enough about that - on to the car.
The new Ford Focus is powered by a 2.3 litre turbocharged four cylinder petrol engine (a 2.0 litre diesel is also available), which is mated to a 6-speed manual and front wheel drive. There will be an automatic version coming soon, but no four wheel drive option.
In regard to performance, the estate version is able to hit 62mph in 5.8 seconds, and the top speed is 155mph.This is thanks to a power output of 280hp and 420Nm of torque. It's not just brawn it has though - the new Focus ST is brainy as well as it has technology such as anti-lag and an e-LSD to further enhance the performance of the new ST.
Add that to a body shape that offers a high amount of practicality and you have what I believe could be all the performance car you'll ever need....

Okay, here is why this new Focus ST is a perfect fit for the North American market:
    1. You mentioned it is chunky, muscular, brawny. To me, it seems to be a more practical, better handling version of the EcoBoost Mustang we have here in the US. Similar engine but much more usable interior space - great rear seat space and cargo capacity.
Americans like 'chunky' 'brawny' 'muscular' 'meaty' cars. This will be VERY popular among car enthusiasts for sure.
    2. It seems the exhaust sound is better than the EcoBoost Mustang?!
    3. Better as an all-year daily driver. Much better to drive this with front-wheel drive in winter with winter tires compared to the rear-wheel drive Mustang. Plus did I mention you can actually fit normal sized humans in the rear seats, unlike the Mustang?
    4. Price is similar to the higher spec Ecoboost Mustang sold here. Given the choice, I feel confident that most buyers would choose the Focus ST over the ecoboost Mustang. Did you know that Ford offers incentives that make the actual car price lower than the MSRP? And were you aware that Honda never sells the Type R for below MSRP? In fact, dealers almost always try to raise the price for the Type R above MSRP. Insane. So the Focus ST will be more affordable than the Type R.
    5. Available with great 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic option. We all know most Americans can't be bothered to actually shift their own gears or never got the opportunity to learn in the first place since driver's licences here do not require passing in a manual car. Offering both transmissions would open up to more potential customers. Plus the manual has the auto rev-match feature that seems to be popular among the top hot hatches sold here: both the Civic Type R and Veloster N have it.
    6. It is so much more advanced and refined than the previous generation. Just imagine for a minute how many owners of the previous Focus ST are salivating for the chance to trade up for this new model! the eLSD and other tech features just add to the improved interior design and space.
    7. The way you describe it as a 'boxer' really stood out to me. It will be so popular here because it's like the Mike Tyson of hot hatches! haha But seriously, this is best all-rounder performance hot hatch. I don't think it matters that it's a little down on horse power compared to the Honda Type R, it's a a more refined, attractive all-around package. And it seems much more exciting to drive than the VW GTI, and better looking too. All the car magazines here in the States will probably crown the Focus ST as the best hot hatch on the market in their future comparison tests.

Here in North America, the hatchback will be more popular than the estate, so it's not really worth bringing the estate to us, we just need the beautiful hatchback! My fellow countrymen, PLEASE call or write Ford Customer Relationship Center: 1-800-392-3673. Tell them we want the new generation Fiesta ST and/or Focus ST in the U.S./Canadian market. If all their customers are telling them, they'll listen and bring us BACK these best-in-class hot hatches. Thank you for your support in this petition effort!

Thanks for the Review. Good to see a review of the estate, especially in Performance Blue. Appreciate you talked at length about the ride/chassis. How does it compare to a CCD equipped 5 door in Normal or Sport mode?

+1 for the comparison of hatchback CCD to estate normal/sport mode. Is estate basically like sport in hatchback or something in between?

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Tel, I'm really sorry, I've only just seen this comment. The ride is definitely firmer than in Sport mode but I still think you could live it day-to-day. In Normal mode, you could almost be fooled in to thinking you're driving a normal Focus. Thanks for watching.

Man, this is weirdest desktop setup ever.
Great review ;-) I agree it should be cheaper, without some of the default equipment. When i bought mk III Focus ST i loved that i could just start with almost basic car and decide what extras i need. When i configure new ST i get only few packs, if i want edge protect (which cost about 50 pounds in mk III) i have to get whole pack for 600, with loads of stuff i do not need like auto parking :-(

How is the comfort - is it enough for family rides 2+2 ?
How is the fuel consumption when driving - normally against the traffic rules not using full power of engine?
Was the one you tested on 19" rims or 18" ?

Hello Tom, thanks for watching, and thanks for the questions:
How is the comfort - is it enough for family rides 2+2 ? Ride comfort is discussed around 14:20 onwards.
How is the fuel consumption when driving - normally against the traffic rules not using full power of engine? Unfortunately I can't remember as I tested the car almost 2 years ago
Was the one you tested on 19" rims or 18" ? As mentioned at 7:43, 19" alloys.

@@CarObsession As I could figure it out situation looks like this: Performance Pack is only available on hatch. It comes with adaptive suspension, Track Mode and Confort Mode (while stock car has only Normal, Sport and Slippery modes), Launch Control and Rev-matching function. This Pack is unavailable on estate. Mainly adaptive suspension is unavailable. However, it doesn 't say if the estate gets extra driving modes or not as stock. It just says "Driving Mode Selection". Now, I thought it only comes with Normal/Sport/Slippery as the stock hatch comes with. But watching you video got me thinking...say, that estate of yours had adaptive suspension or not? Because if the answer is no, then my theory proves correct: stock estate gets extra driving modes. My dealer texted me earlier this evening and told me that he remembers watching also another video with this estate ST and that too had Track Mode. And as we spoke today I realise I hanven't seen an Estate ST which clearly did not have it...So? Did the car have adaptive suspension or not? That is the key to the mistery. 😀

    • @CarObsession

@@mihneacorneliuconstantines1941 The ST Estate as standard gets Slippery, Normal and Sport driving modes. The Performance Pack for the petrol hatch adds a Race driving mode. Adaptive suspension is part of the Performance Pack for the diesel. The estate seen in this video did not have the adaptive suspension.
