Ford Focus ST Diesel Review: The Fast And The Frugal

- Hello guys, and welcome back to Car Obsession. A few weeks ago I tested the brand new Ford Focus ST petrol, and I thought it was a tremendous car. Sadly I had to give the keys back, but after doing so, I was handed the keys to this, the diesel ST.
Powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged EcoBlue engine, it has 10% more power (190hp) and TWICE the amount of torque (400Nm) compared to the 2.0 litre TDCI engine used in the last model. 62mph is dealt with in 7.6 seconds, and the top speed is 137mph. The power is mated to the front wheels using a 6-speed manual - unlike the petrol version, the diesel will not get the option of the 7-speed automatic.
The diesel also loses out on the impressive e-LSD system, but it does come standard with torque vectoring.

This car is a real insider tip, especially as a pre owned vehicle. Not that many on the market though, but not many people seem to be interested in it, so you can get a lot of fun for your money!
Have completed 8,000 miles in mine. Absolutely delighted with it. 52 mpg average for the most part.
That's even better than my Golf 1.5 EVO petrol 150. About 10% better. Really impressive.
do u have performance pack on the diesel?

@@nevilbounds5762 interesting. I'm looking at diesel and see that some on auto trader do have the perf pack. But Ford removed the option for diesel so you now cant get ccd etc on the diesel.
I think you have a great voice and in my opinion i would prefer 2 or 3 more pov type camera scenes. Your shifting action was really nice. Keep up the good work in presenting cars on youtube!

There are people out there who used to rave about the Mondeo ST 155 (my brother included), so I can see why a diesel hot hatch carries some appeal.
Stephan Dolby never as much fun as petrol but love diesel midrange torque
Somebody around my Sisters area Still has a ST diesel Mondeo , it’s heavily Modified .but he’s having to get rid of it because of the ULEZ

Ive been a ford kuga driver and im board to death of a comfy safe high position ride ... needed something with a bit of spark a bit of a kick but good on fuel ..........you know what .......i love it.... well chuffed your review was very accurate and certainly helped thank you .
3000 miles plus now on the clock and for use every day use I get 44.4mpg which is the exact same as my 2018 2lt Kuga when I set cruse at 74mph. but the pick up is fantastic and when you want to play ...it plays very well indeed. No regrets buying this car love the heads up display also. 😁👍

Really good review. To the point and unpretentious. I have a mark 3 facelift and i have to say i prefer the styling inside and out to the mark 4. Hopefully they've sorted out the door seal carry on. Im in the middle of fixing mine. All in all though you're right about having yiur cake and eating it. Especially if its your daily drive. I get 46mpg from mine combined and it looks the same as the petrol. Yeah. Doesn't sound as cool but my bank balance is better off.

Nice car, id quite happily choose this diesel version over the petrol for better mpg , still looks great an is quick enough, torn between getting this diesel focus st or a petrol puma st both great looking cars , great honest review cheers 👍🏴

I'm thinking the exact same , currently have a mk7 golf r but I need more economy, puma st dont seem that bad and is still petrol but again I've had a mk3.5 diesel st before and I loved that car alot. Mmm
Great video chap! Is the performance to 60 difference between the focus and the golf down to gearbox or both manuals like for like?

I've been in the previous generation st diesel handled really good but found the ride too hard. Taking interior into consideration I would pick the less fun golf gtd
I’ve currently got a 65 plate st-3 diesel love it and looking at this new diesel I would probably get a diesel again 190bhp with 400nm of torque is plenty of power and definitely above average so yeah 👍

Both the Fiesta and the Focus are going to be missed when production of them ceases next year.
In more rural parts of the UK a good many people are going to begrudge giving up their diesel engine cars.

Its a great buy, invest in a money, money maker. It will never be produced again with the zealots in charge of the UK at present. It will hold it's money and only gather more value as it ages. You must look after it with a yearly service regardless of the requirements and you will return a car in 5 yrs with a profit! One of the most powerful diesels left in the car market at present, yes I have one, and this is one that will have parts available for ever due to the transit van roll out.

How quickly can it get from 40mph to .70mph
50mph to 75mph . It’s difficult to find information or videos if this car.
I’ve read its around 5.5 seconds which seems woefully slow given the torque

Ah yes, you would be correct Mr330d, good spot. I was wondering how I'd got that one wrong, (I must admit, I thought it was weird it had double the torque) and I've realised it stems from the info I read on Ford's press release. Admittedly I had mis-read it, as what it was actually stating that the new engine has twice as much torque than the 2.0 litre engine used in the first Focus ST. Thanks for watching.

@@Mr330d To be fair, it's not Ford's fault, I didn't read it correct, although I must admit I wasn't expecting Ford to compare their new diesel engine to one of their old petrol engines.
Car Obsession Doesn’t make much sense does it however they just thought it sounded good having twice the torque . I remember having a mk1 Focus 1.8 16v petrol with 160nm torque and it was a rocket compared to a diesel I had remapped to 340nm
I am considering buying Diesel ST. I need your help about deciding. I couldn't get test car, because in Bosnia they don't have one.
I am very worried about ride firmness, is this car very firm? I am averaging 30 000 km per year?
Second question is about recardo, are the pain for legs, I am 120 kg and 180 cm tall, would I fit in them, and for long journeys am I going to feel pressure on my legs?

Hi there, thanks for watching. I'd love to answer your question definitively, but comfort can sometimes be a subjective thing, and it can vary from person to person. Me personally, I would not class this car as very firm, but it's worth pointing out that the car tested had adaptive dampers as an option.
In regard to the seats, again, it's difficult to say with complete confidence as I'm a different build to you. I'd recommend going to your local Ford dealer (if they are open - car dealers are currently shut in the UK because of Coronavirus) and experiencing the car for yourself.
Amm the old car has 400Nm of torque also? The new one doesn't have twice as much..

I was on the point of deciding that this was the car for me, then noticed the ghastly electronic handbrake. That alone, puts me off. Any electric issues and they default to 'On' so you can't tow or push it, so no thank you.
So can I roll coal with it?

The petrol version has a much better performance for the same price . Why have all the sporty looks without the performance The diesel is more of a warm hatch. My 1.6 ecoboost s has a slightly better performance and that's quite a slow car.
why is it called ST? its a regular focus with regular diesel engine. They slap ST badge on anything

I do disagree with what you say though, as it's not a regular Focus; it looks almost exactly the same as the petrol ST on the outside (exhaust different is design) and has the same cabin. The diesel ST also has more performance parts compared to a regular diesel Focus and the 2.0 litre EcoBlue diesel is the most powerful engine ever fitted to a Focus, so I wouldn't say the engine is regular, either. I also think it's unfair to say that Ford will slap the ST badge on anything.
However, I can see where you're coming from in you other content where you say this is more of a warm hatch than a hot hatch.
@@CarObsession it's a good informative video, but the diesel focus is laughable in my opinion, 180ho and 8s to 60 are the numbers of everyday people carrier, not a sports car. The petrol focus is already quite slow, but this, it doesn't deserve the ST badge
@@r390gt1lm The petrol ST will hit 62mph in 5.7 seconds, I wouldn't say that's "quite slow" as it's the same as the latest Honda Civic Type R - would you say that's quite slow as well? It's also the same as the Renault Megane RS Trophy, so I'm struggling to buy in to your point. I'll be upfront, I don't know THAT much about the performance of people carriers, but I would have thought your average everyday people carrier would not be able to do 60mph in 8.0 seconds I say 10+ seconds is more realistic.
@@CarObsession petrol ST does 60 in about 6.2, my friend has one. 270hp is more respectable, but still meh. New civic is in a league with Focus RS, these are propper cars. Diesel ST is just another daily commuter and grocery getter
@@r390gt1lm Well I love mine mate 👍 great fun to drive for me that is, maybe not for you though. I thought this review was spot on as i have one and i drive one not what my mates say... Oh I’m not a petrol head so don’t hit back with stats it wont mean shaft all to me. To be honest if you want, you could just give bad vibes about any car ever made...if you bark up what you drive I bet you will find some person who will find fault with it also... hmmmm that’s cars and critics for you. Anyway I love my ford ST Diesel thingy lol 🤣 isn’t that what its about unless of course money is no object to you and you can have the best of the best .....whatever that is in an individual’s head? I’m 100% sure you are not in that position. this was a genuine honest and good review thanks Car Obseession job well done
