    Do NOT round MGRS. Especially with 3 or less digits per Easting/Northing.
    MGRS represents an AREA not a POINT.
    Just remove the digits at the end of each block, first block being Easting, second Northing. The 36 S part is the grid ID, though some DCS maps have two adjacent grids so you need to make sure you are not in an area near the border between those, then it is important to verify the grid. The next two characters XA is a grid square describing a 100 KM x 100 KM area(!), then each digit in the Easting and Northing blocks as a pair describe a a tenth of that area, XA 11 is a 10 KM x 10 KM area, XA 12 12 a 1 KM x 1 KM , etc.
    XA 8339 6903 is a 10m x 10m area with its southwestern corner at 83,390m east and 69,030m north from the XA grids western and southern border (visualize this on the F10 map with the squares showing).
    Though in this case we are just a couple meters of by rounding, it is a couple hundred meters with 6 digits. So if you get a request to "search" (rounded) XA 8335 6904 you start looking at 834 690 which is 60m off to the northeast. 4 digits and we talk about 600m off... and you assume you need to search to the north and east from the MGRS grid you get. So TLDR: do not round MGRS, always cut to the required digits per block.

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Interesting! It did occur to me that rounding might be an issue, and i spent some time in the editor dropping down an infantry soldier, then rounding and dropping a new soldier on those coordinates, and a third on the unrounded, to measure the effect, but it didn't make terribly much difference at this scale.
      I can see the issue that could be about on larger adjustments now, Thanks for the detailed explanation!
      Always learning with DCS.

      @@RedKiteRender yeah, not terribly off at 1m or 10m, but my German Army Instructor hammered that into our brains, especially for artillery fire mission requests... 😁

      Ya rounding becomes a big issue when your trying to find those small nav points walking through the woods…..

      @@shagrat47 Was the bigger issue that artillery can go really wrong if it lands in the wrong place, or that a German was being faced with less than maximal precision?

    • @Barundus
      @Barundus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I respectfully offer a countering perspective.
      MGRS is a method of describing a POINT with a certain degree of precision. Not an area.
      A four-digit grid offers 1000 meter resolution.
      A six-digit grid offers 100 meter resolution.
      A ten-digit grid offers 1 meter resolution, and so forth.
      As such, if you simply drop digits from a higher-resolution string, you're potentially giving-away accuracy.
      In the example above, using the last three digits as examples:
      39.8 is closer to 40 than it is to 39. Simply dropping the 8 puts the result 8 units from the point, compared to rounding, which puts the result 2 units away.
      03.7 is closer to 04 than it is to 03. Simply dropping the 7 puts the result 7 units from the point, compared to rounding, which put the result 3 units away.
      So simply dropping the digits instead of rounding in this case make the resulting grid less accurate.
      A sensor will slew to the grid you provide. So the grid becomes the CENTER of the view/search area. In that case, I'd want my position location to be as close as practical to the point of interest, NOT the Left/Down truncated position resulting from simply dropping digits and then having to think about/visualize where to search. I simply want my sensor as close as possible to the "thing", because I'll be looking at it from all aspects anyhow.

    Just FYI, the point type automatically changing (i.e. WP to CM) based on the ident code you enter is not accurate to real world. It does work, in DCS, currently as you pointed out. ED may or may not remove this functionality in the future. It's better to get into the habit of manually choosing the point type prior to entering the ident code. Great video as always, though!
    Edit for additional info:
    The reason for this is because of duplication of ident codes. Example: The ident code BP as a Control Measure means 'Battle Position'. But BP as a Target Point means 'Blowpipe' (a type of manpad).

    Thanks, Redkite, I wasn't sure what I was doing wrong, turns out I was leaving on that last digit! Now for the real questions: how do you get that Israeli livery (I think the non-playable Apache had it?) and do happen to know where its kneeboard folder is? I tried manually creating an AH-64D kneeboard folder, but came up with snake eyes (gratuitous Nicholas Cage reference)

      You're not dropping jdams with this, the accuracy isn't needed.
