That Michigan Hunter still had a point that needs addressed. The state of Michigan ruined donation programs by adding a bunch of onerous regulation. If nothing else, a bunch of people will no longer be receiving nutritious meat.
Meat eater should purchase a tag. The episode of sheep hunting in the off season would be really interesting.
One thing that wasn’t discussed was impact of gov tag moneys post tag purchase. There is a legit economic boost that comes from that one individual’s bank account going into often small local economies… I have seen firsthand the benefit of the money these tags generate beyond that tag. While wildlife if definitely a central and critical focus here, I think it’s important to consider their reach beyond.
When hunters talk about genetics it is typically only one small aspect of genetics and that is antler size. Not survival, drought tolerance, breeding ability, predator awareness, over winter survival, etc, etc. it's basically mis using the word genetics and they only mean a pre conceived notion of what their antlers should be

When tags are purchased from non profits the individual can write off the amount above the base price of th tag as a tax write off. Even when that money goes back to the state agency. They can't do that with a lottery. In CA the non profit gets to keep a small percentage of the cost to cover cc expenses and advertising expenses.

I only went hunting once for dove. Wish I could have gone more. I love watching your videos. No one owns the animals the lottery is the best way. No rams sheep's or bucks about it!
Perhaps if you take out a deer that has cwd, perhaps they should encourage you by giving you another tag for another deer.
CWD just got detected in deer in central California. Got a letter in the mail demanding testing of a deer is harvested in that specific zone. Scary shit to be honest
Im not versed much in cwd. As it is not much concern to myself personally, but without government intervention why has no area where I live in Michigan seen decreasing deer numbers in cwd counties. I have a hunting property in a cwd county about 75 deer on average calling it home. I’ve never seen signs of a sickness. I don’t even know what it would look like to be honest

Cal's analogy of skiing to sheep hunting should give great pause. It's spot on, there are only as Brodie said two "corporations left" owning/controlling skiing.
As someone who fell in love with skiing 40+ years ago no one I know from then still skis.... Why?.. Too expensive! Family owned type ski resorts are almost non-existent, particularly local availability. The ability to pass on to the next is quickly dissipating. Both are businesses/activities that are slowly pricing themselves out of availability and therefore existence.

Cows usually get butchered before those types of diseases actually start to have an effect anyways. Same with most deer. Most may have it but show no symptoms till they get way older.
You don't know.much about the cattle industry. Pretty much EVERY ONE of those 50 MILLION + head of cattle thst are slaughtered each year in the U.S. have at LEAST a Cow as a mother .ALL of those mother cows are old enough to show signs of CWD type disease
I live in texas where you have to have money to hunt ! Tags are easy to get but we are limited to where we can hunt !
In California the fund raising tags brought in a good amount of money, especially the sheep tag. But when some of those fund raising tags were moved to raffle tags they actually brought in more dollars. I can't remember if that was true for the sheep but it was true for the deer, elk, and pronghorn. After so many years the states attorneys said it was a lottery and stopped the process so back to auctioning off to the rich people again.
If you asked Steve 10 years ago about the mule deer management I think he would have a different opinion.
Monetizing game is a slippery slope. Eventually it will become the kings deer. I haven’t drawn an elk tag in NM for fourteen years. It appears they are being monetized through landowner tags, decreasing my chances of drawing a tag. Either that or I’m extremely unlucky.

You missed the biggest issue with letting others hunt your land to take out excessive does, the liability. Here in New York you’d get your ass sued off you as soon as someone got hurt. And don’t say have them sign a liability release, worthless. Some slime bag attorney will still help your ‘guest’ hunter sue you.
I hear ya, but I have hunted many ranches for excess does, and cull bucks over the years... and I think the difference (for me at least) was that I was connected in one way or another by links of relationships to land owners. Similar to 6 steps to Kevin Bacon, but not in 6 steps, maybe more like one or two. I definitely would not just open it up to randoms, for the exact reason you describe.

On the discussion of $200k (or whatever) vs. $10k for a governor's tag, there's an old joke, often attributed to Winston Churchill (but actually predates him):
Man: "Madam, would you sleep with me for five million pounds?"
Woman: "My goodness, sir... Well, I suppose... we would have to discuss terms, of course... "
Man: "Would you sleep with me for five pounds?"
Woman: "Sir, what kind of woman do you think I am?!"
Man: "Madam, we've already established that. Now we are haggling about the price.”
So, the discussion around consistency is on point.

25 year resident of AZ here. Getting onto 70 years old and haven’t drawn an Elk tag for 5 years now and the 2nd year in a row for not drawing a Deer tag also, and they are gmu’s that are not usually hard to draw in. Glad they quit the Governor tag. Glad they banned trail cams too. I even think game and fish should quit raffling off tags. G&F don’t own those tags, they are only managers of those tags. We own the wildlife. They are raffling off an item that doesn’t belong to them. If there could be one more tag available in the draw it might be the one I get. Point system is all well and fine but think a person should also get an extra point for being over 65 years old old, 2 extra points for over 70 and so on every 5 years. If they need more money, increase licensing fees by a percentage that will make up for it. Double the increase for non resident and cut wasteful spending within the G&F.

Takes a new hunter out, with only a small amount of practice, has her using a gun that needs certain special attention when cycling and then gets shot. Can’t deal with the fact she shot him and then leaves her? What a maroon.

I watched a video where he shot a mondo elk with the governor tag, could barely make it to ridge across from the elk and make the shot. Then barely made it to the elk itself for pictures. He had recruited like 12 other dudes to do all the work, pre and post hunt, for him though. Was hard to finish the video.
These guys need to be careful taking about headline grabbing and irresponsible reporting. Cal did the same thing about the 2021 Wisconsin wolf hunt. He grabbed common AP stories that were flat out false and regurgitated them. Residents in WI knew the quota allocations, and of course it wasn't reported correctly. These articles kept saying WI blew past the quota. Not true. For a group that preaches nuance, they sure didn't dig for the nuance in this case. I emailed Cal and tried to relay details, and of course it was ignored and no correction mentioned. I couldn't really support his weekly platform after that.

The simplest most diplomatic solution to governors tags is to include a second lottery tag for each governors tag.
One for the people and one for the wealthy.
People will still cry about the money one and demand two because people tend to be entitled regardless but I think it would turn most public sentiment towards accepting governors tags.

Commenter 3 saying its normal and not new that wealthy folks have privilege is exactly the problem. Just because it exists doesn't mean its a good thing. I don't think the same buyer should be able to outbid everyone year after year, even if the next bidder is lower someone else should get it, maybe draw the top 5 bidders. Overall it is a problem and it should change
Let me explain why I'm on the fence about cwd. I don't think cwd has anything to do with the deer as much as it has to do with a way to control the hunters. Let me explain. Cwd lives in the ground for a extended period of time. Ok. I get it should not move any carcases from a area where cwd is present. Ok. If it is absolutely about not spreading cwd then why can I go to Wisconsin buy a truck load of alfalfa and bring it back to Minnesota for my animals the deer etc. to eat and spread everything that would be in the ground where the alfalfa came from. Sorry don't buy the story. Not saying cwd is not real or dangerous to deer. The DNR has other intensions.

No horse in the race, but Gov tags seem like a separate HUGE money maker for the state’s environmental/hunting programs. Raffle just seems like a limited draw and wont pull the same funds for the programs. If one guy wants to voluntarily fund the state’s annual wildlife budget - let him.

Behind every governor's tag is a healthy campaign contribution. The naivete is nauseating.
The first two minutes lets me know to not let Steve borrow one of my books. I'm very particular about my books care. I normally buy a hardcopy and paperback because I'm extremely particular about my hardcovers.
I'm the same lol. I protect my books. But I can appreciate a book that's "well loved" too.
