  • Jimmy Rabbitte (Robert Arkins) and Steven Clifford (Michael Aherne) puzzle over the lyrics to Procul Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale while appreciating the beauty and tradition of the music.

A lot o' work. If you didn't do it for God, who would you do it for?
    - Steven!
    - Jimmy. Father Molloy will be here soon.
    - Great sound, wha'?
    - Yeah.
I wish my granny had one of these we could borrow.
    - Great intro, uh?
    - They nicked it from Marvin Gaye. He nicked it from Bach!
    Ah, it's beautiful.
    We skipped the light fantastic
    Skipped the light fandango!
    Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
    I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
Poxiest bleedin' lyrics ever written. One of sixteen vestal virgins leaving for the coast. What's that mean?
I never understood that, either. It's a very peculiar lyric.
    Howayeh, Father?
Did you talk to the committee?
I have, and they've agreed in principle. It would have to be the 28th because Danny, our bingo caller, is going into hospital to have a tap put in his kidneys.
    28th. No problem.
I'm sure you'll blow their minds, Jimmy!

Now that this scene is stuck in my head, it's kinda funny when you think 🤔 of it a church organ,in a church playing this of all songs I mean really lmao 🤣 am I the only one who feels this way

I could be wrong, but often churches are the only places (other than very old movie theaters or roller rinks) that have pipe organs, and sometimes do host "secular" organ recitals. As it's usually music-only, and often the classical composers provided melodies for hymns, it's hard to think of it as 'heretical' or anything like that. Although in some areas, instrumentals manage to get banned, too.

At least the organist mentioned that it was all stolen from J.S.B (Bach) He also has it lucky, back in Bach's day somebody had to constantly pump a bilge to produce air for the organ

What Marvin Gaye song is he talking about? Is that an allusion to the future scene where he's in the confessional and the priest corrects him and tells him it was Percy Sledge?

Well, kind of. He made a *mistake* - the same the kind of mistake he mistake he makes later in the confessional. Good point, lad!

Yes, they got it wrong in this scene - it should have been Percey Sledge. They added the confessional line as a joke about it:

@@mralan5743 Thank you! Always wondered about that. I went through Marvin's whole catalog trying to figure it out! =) So that means Jimmy had it wrong too! Tsk tsk.

You have to admit that there are some slight melodic similarities, although it could all be coincidence or perhaps inspiration; I think both points are debatable

Well at least Johann Sebastian Bach continues to be an inspiration for music 🎶 artist, and his work continues to be immortalized. Another thing that is note worthy is that it was usually the Catholic church or churches in general (a.k.a liturgical music) that commissioned such composers to be able to have the means to compose in the first place
