Trying to make afro-textured hair do something it's not designed to do, will just leave a person frustrated. The only thing that's not going to sweat out is cornrows, or some type of braids or twists that you're not undoing later. Trying to maintain a a curl and set of any kind (braid out, rollers etc) while sweating profusely, is totally pointless. I leave the curly styles for when I'm not going to be sweating, and use headwraps, braids or twists the rest of the time. Also timing my workouts so I have time to do my hair for work the next day. There's so much cognitive dissonance in natural hair media: promoting it, but also getting caught up in wanting it to do things that aren't associated with our hair textures, and creating products and styling options to try and achieve the latter.

This is the best part of locs! It has definitely cut down my time on maintenance and feels comfortable. Unfortunately not everyone is open to them which is understandable.

Not having my natural hair 'done' has literally stopped me from going to gym sessions!! Which I'm not very proud of. But the self-consciousness is so real. Most of the time people dgaf about how you show up to the gym but your brain will try to convince you otherwise. I'm so happy to see a video like this because when you search up 'natural hairstyles' for the gym, all you see is the 3c girlies or the silk press girlies - and i don't look good in a hat. there is nobody to relate to. I started my locs last month (1/17) so i'm hoping this issue is gone forever.

This is why i’ve decided my hair will be cute on the day it’s cute and that’s it 😂. To be fair tho my gym is in my apt and i have a bf of the longterm variety so i def can be real with understanding that my “desire to look cute” is lower than others maybe for those reasons. i sorta do a style setting my hair for a week (smalll plaits or twists) and then The Day it needs to look cute is when i take them out and i don’t do any sweating or exposure to loose hair + moisture lol. Basically, i’ve given up on “doing” my hair before non major events because i find it to be a waste of energy

I truly think you would get everything you want with micro twists (with no added hair). I have lower density hair and smaller parts are key, micro twists defy humidity, you get to show your length, versatility w styles, all while retenting soo much length. Also if you try micro twists and dont like it you can always throw in some passion twist hair etc so you can't really fail! Try it out 100%

Minitwists and flat twist have saved my life at the gym. I typically do them weekly). With minitwists you can style them in a ponytail or bun. Flat twists don't just have to be straight back and can be done in a cute style. And if I need my hair to be styled for a particular occasion I can either take them down or rewash and style accordingly. I go to the gym 4-6 times per week and as was said earlier don't have the time to fuss over my hair everyday. Life is too busy and too short. 😊

Synthetic half wigs have been amazing for me! They’re lightweight, breathable, and I don’t leave any of my hair out. Just my edges, and it matches my 4c texture blown out. My favorite right now is “Boss Lady” / “Top Lady” half wig. It lasts me 2 weeks with everyday wear including the gym (I do not sleep in the wig at all). I wear it down, flip over side part, half-up half-down, it’s so versatile! And most importantly my natural hair is twisted or braided (moisturized and protected) underneath. I hope you find a style that works for you! ❤️❤️🫶🏾

I like to run (always end up sweating like crazy) and I just put some chunky twists in my hair (32 total). I was my hair once a week and reinstall the twists on a weekly basis. This works great for me, and I don't experience excessive tangles when I take them down. Also, with small enough twists, you can style them almost in the same way that you style loose hair (I can do buns, half up half down, ponytails, etc.)

Y'all locing her hair is not going to solve the insecurity she has with the hair that grows out of her scalp. I'm not saying she won't look good with them or she won't like the look. Liking locs and liking your actual hair are two different things.
Edit: I don't know what is so hard to understand. Liking how your curl pattern that comes out of your scalp is not the same as liking your hair styled as locs, braids etc. It's giving how y'all hide behind braids and locs rather than liking your actual hair

I think the pressure for a black woman to always have her hair done and cute and acceptable is so deep rooted that it hasn’t gone anywhere. It was freeing at first when I went natural, and then it came back the longer my hair got. That’s another reason I just want to cut it and go back to the simple TWA.

Also, I like absorbable but breathable fabrics to wrap my hair while working out/sweating. 1, I'm not covered in sweat. 2, it takes moisture from my hair so it's not too wet. • @Lisa_Flowers

I totally get this particular struggle. But this video reminds me of not how exhausted I am with my hair, but how exhausted I am by _being_ exhausted with my hair. Like at some point fighting against your hair and what it naturally does and how it naturally exists gets tiring. At least for me.
I honestly think that most of the 'struggle' involved in 4c hair comes from entirely made up external parameters. Like outside of external parameters of what it means to be presentable or 'cute', and the general and personal struggles that come with any hair type, is it really any harder to take care of or have 4c hair? Probably not! Did my ancestors think their 4c hair was difficult or bad or ugly or needed to be stretched, twisted out and defined to the high heavens to be cute? Probably not! Did they even spend this much time thinking about their hair? Probably not! So why do I feel so trapped in my and other people's perceptions of my hair as difficult or ugly or unkempt? Is it possible for me to live a life where I accept my hair even if we don't always get along, and where I don't even have to think about it all that much and focus on actually living?
This is not to dismiss the desire to look 'cute' according to societies stanndards of beauty, or even your own standards (because what you genuinely want and what society tells you to want sometimes just happen to align). Nor is it meant to say natural hair can't genuinely be frustrating. But idk, i'm just tired of hating my hair lol. I'm tired of giving her conditional acceptance. Because, for me, first it was hating 4c hair, now it's 'i love 4c hair!...IF it's thick and/or long and/or comes with thick edges or stays within particular styles that make it look 3c'. And tbh that's still a form of self loathing. Accepting your hair means accepting everything about it, not just the texture, but for me, the length, the shrinkage, the low density, how my edges look sparse and have from BIRTH, how the texture and density varies from the back to the middle to the front, that's it's naturally uneven, everything. Accepting my head of hair instead of fighting it for doing things it naturally does. Doesn't mean I have to like it all but it does mean i'm not fighting a losing battle.

There are a lot of options. I have hyperhydrosis so sweat like crazy at the gym. I do: 1) Mini twists in a pony tail, 2) single Bantu knot top bun on a blowout or silk press, or 3) pineapple using a satin scrunchie on a twist out. The first 2 keep my roots stretched. I always tie down my edges and switch the soaked band to a dry one after the work out. I don’t take my hair down until an hour after so the roots dry. You can also dry the roots using cool air.

Yes, your hair is beautiful and so are you. 💜 I'm not sure how you feel about locs. I'm five years in and this is the best relationship I've ever had with my hair (this is also the longest my hair has ever been). I mean it when I tell you - this is the character of my hair. Locs work for the gym, my hair is always 'done' and my length (not a priority over health) is always there. I still do styles - even roller-set with foam rollers for big bouncy loc-curls. Best of all, I'm relieved and my life isn't structured around the natural being of my hair.

YESS! embrace the shrinkage AND the hair texture. 4c doesn't have to be stretched and ultra defined to be cute. nothing wrong with undefined hair, that hair is just as pretty as 3c long loose curls. Its not easy especially if you never got validation/representation from a young age but when you truly love your hair for what it is is when it becomes so peaceful. When you "battle" shrinkage you'll never know peace, work with it not against it

I have 4c hair that is just like yours. It shrinks to about 75-80% from my scalp after I wash it. Stretched out it's grown to just touching the base of my neck. I currently have an under cut (I got tired lol) I have cut my hair a total of 3 times. Shaved the sides in college, gave myself the undercut during covid lock down and I cut it about 2 inches from my scalp about a year and a half ago. The unshaved portion of my hair currently touches the base of my neck. I feel like letting go of external validation for your hair will definitely help you mentally. Our hair does not have whyt people hang time, it does not have whyt people flow. It bounces, it grows straight up from the scalp, it clumps, it curls etc. I had wash day today, I had taken down my twists yesterday and my hair literally looked like a bush haha. But I went for a 30 minute jog because I needed it, I left my hair as it was and washed it when I came back. It's blown out in twists now. When I was able to accept my hair naturally as it sat on my head with little to no manipulation and didn't force it to conform to external forces? I felt SO much better. It literally felt like a weight had lifted. I think it will lift for you too. You have gorgeous hair, in every form and shape it takes. Let go of those external forces, let them be released from your spirit. Good luck sis wishing you the best. You got this!!!😊

I’m not sure if someone else commented. But I’m natural as well and workout. The trick I learned was to let my scalp dry before I let my hair down after working out. Has saved me so much frustration!

This is why I don't do any special styles or stretch my hair intentionally. Especially when I'm constantly in the gym. I actually used to just co wash (not literally... but I'd just wet my hair and add conditioner at night) without detangling after a cardio heavy workout and just twist before bed. Now I just wear a twistout, puff, or wash n go and keep it moving. You could also try retwisting at night with some twisting cream if it's too puffy but even on the way to work in the summer when we get heat waves with high af humidity, my hair shrinks sooooo much. And I get wanting the length to show but that's just not what are hair does. Since you're in America, maybe you can try color wows anti humidity stuff. Where I live almost everyone has naturally bone straight hair so anti frizz and humidity products basically don't exist here lol. And the wash n go at 17:20 is soooooo cute!!!

I used to comb all my hair forward, twist the end into one point..
flip it up & back, & pin it in the middle, behind the bun created.
It's like a Marlene Dietrich-Gwen Stefani type bun.
It always worked for me. & my hair-line & natural hair...
always made the bun look German crooner, steamer punk-esque hair stylin'.

Idky ppl keep saying to loc up. I feel like she's made it insanely obvious in all her videos that she likes wearing her hair out and having it look like a "fluffy black cloud".
I wouldn't want to loc my hair but I'm not strongly against it or anything, it just honestly ticks me off when I see ppl repeatedly saying someone should loc up whenever that person has a bit of struggle with their hair. It feels like "an easy way out" when it shouldn't, it should be for aesthetic purpose, *-As well as* functionality(Protection) but it just feels like when people say this (and they always *only* say this to type 4 hair), they're tryna say 'our hair isn't worth it. Putting in effort, styling, taking time on it isn't worth it. The results are below and would never look as good as those with straight and loose curled hair so just loc it up. *I* got locs and *my* life has never been easier. Fvck trying to work with my natural hair cause if I didn't have these locs in let me tell you I'd be buying a relaxer so quick-'
Its annoying. I wish instead of trying to push locs with that intention, we should be pushing AWAY the seemingly mandatory *NEED* black women have with having to stretch our hair before being acceptable enough to go out rather than wearing it in its "oh so horrible, bad" shrunken state.
I feel like we need a Natural Hair Movement re-do but for only 3c-4c (or *4z* as ppl say) textures. Our hair quite literally isn't supposed to be/look "long", it grows up towards the sky not down. Shrinkage *IS* its natural state not those big ass afros everyone wore in that movement

    • @yuliaaaaaaaaaaa
      @yuliaaaaaaaaaaa 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Natural hair does grow down when it gets longer, it only grows up when it’s shorter…

    • @NinaNina-qr2pf
      @NinaNina-qr2pf 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@yuliaaaaaaaaaaa I'd say fundamental our hair grows upwards its only hangs down because of the weight -But then again, that doesn't even go for everyone cause I know *my* hair doesn't even reach my shoulders but when I pull it down its right above my bellybutton. It all depends on your hair porosity and if you have an s pattern or coils.

Why do your videos come a little too on time x'D. Literally just finished taking my yarn twists out and decided to make mini twists (pinned up) my go-to gym style. Honestly, watching you struggle made me think I was 'gyming' wrong lol. Never knew how lucky I was to sweat in my hands and not my forehead. Glad you figured some combos out. I definitely recommend pinned up (with either hair clips or bobbies) mini twist/braids. You've also inspired me to try curlformers and wash-n-gos...even though I know they won't survive me going to the gym 3 times a week. Loving your posts! Keep up the good work

  • @Gabbame11

Just get micro locs and you'll be free. You can mimic essentially the same styles as you can with loose hair, plus the length you'll get will be down your back. Speaking as someone 2.5 years loc'd after a few years natural.

I feel like my fight is with how I want to be perceived and what my hair needs. My hair needs fuzzy twists left in and to be left alone. I want tight styles that stay tight and never fuzz. We find a happy middle right now with styling the fuzzy twists into like short "Loc" styles. if i think of them as locs it helps too. I had locs at one point in my journey as well. This is such a fun topic!😘💕

I workout literally everyday and I also feel so self conscious about my hair looking shorter than it is. I don't think I can take the time that you have to really treat my fluff nugget super well & find what works because I just want what's easy & low maintenance at 6am on the way to the gym, so I live in protective styles. This is an on-going struggle so if anyone has tips on this channel I am all ears/eyes, haha. In solidarity, swole naturalistas!

I always go with a puff which is cute but the trick is to let your hair dry all the way before taking it down...then you can pineapple in 3 sections at night. I like using a bandana or sweat band on my edges...again don't take down until dry. It's been key in my workout journey.
