Fred Dibnah - His Engines - A 'Moving' Story (Tribute)

  • Fred Dibnah was a unique character of the British Landscape - As a steeplejack he was sometimes responsible for changing it! But he was also a conservationist, of steam engines, steel and tools. Some say Fred was born to late and would have thrived in the Victorian era. I believe Fred was born at just the right time, to preserve a dying and easily forgotten part of British heritage in a computer and cadcam age. Always a pleasure to work with, Fred's legacy remains a testament to the industrial age and all those who strive to protect the assets.

    So heartbreaking. That this collection wasn't protected in its home. this should have been made into a museum . Im so glad steps were taken to safeguard the Steam engines and equipment. But the buildings and the shop the legacy being destroyed and left abandoned is a True shame. Rest In peace Fred.

    Just a couple of days ago the algorithm recommended me a video about Fred Dibnah and I've been fascinated by this guy's lifestyle. I had no idea about his existence since I'm from Argentina, but I've been down the rabbit hole and watched everything I could find about him here on TH-cam, including the miniseries they made about him. I can't help but to compare him to a mad scientist (mad in the good sense of the word) since It's crazy how he risked his neck every day as a steeplejack during the day, to then work all night bringing back to life these old machines, and just living like it was the 1800's. Sad to see how his house and workshop ended, since his property should've been turned into a museum right after he passed away. But oh well, at least his steam machines ended in the hands of people that appreciate them.

    As a Yank, I can sympathize with you who are concerned about Fred's great legacy. You need to be, I will say it is going to get worse. Many today are selfless, and could care less about your legacy. I am a historian and see a lot of problems in my country caused by hate groups who have caused a lot of destruction in my country, the alternative lifestyle groups actively in ur streets, BLM who have destroyed in our nation many cities infrastructure. These ma t of our heritage groups have also destroyed many of our heritage sits. The Civil War was over 200 years ago and many of the radicals have been allowed to destroy many monuments, destroy cemetery monuments, and have changed the history taught in our schools. I speak of this as a warning and the love for your nation. I would not like to see this to happen to you. Yes Freds legacy, should be kept for the great work he achieved. God Bless his family and you who care for him
    U

      I'm from Blackburn just 10 miles up the road from Fred and there is an old inn called the Blackamoor named after the local area and its been forced to change its name by the lunatic fringe because of the word black. I'm afraid your comment is spot on, these are sad times that we're in and they're going to get so much worse

    We will miss the steam traction engines and all Fred has gathered in his victorian age collection, but what we mis the most is the man, Sir Fred Dibnah and his passionate humorous story telling.
    And in a way he lives on, to his close ones, friends, the British Nation and all the steam fans around the world, he reminded us of what was and inspired so many…
    Does anyone know if any of the stolen artifacts, ever been returned?

    Its so sad to someones whole achievements being moved because some unscupulous thieves stealing from his home and trashing it my heart goes out to his wife and family, hopefully they can get somewhere safe and secure so as to prevent such things being destroyed. Also tractor traction engine should posthoumly be honoured with Fred Dibnahs, name on it. his other engine Betsy has name on it . Enjoyed all his videos over the years from steeplejacking to building / restoring steam traction engines god bless a true believer from a scotsman in glasgow RIP FRED!

    Lottery money or something like that should have been used to first secure the property from thieves and secondly to arrange transport for the engines to a museum. So the brass wheels were stolen for like a few lousy quid at a dubious scrap merchant when replacing them will be difficult and expensive.
    Scrap dealers should be under more scrutiny, far too many are happy to accept shiny brass trunnion wheels or big reels of copper wire no questions asked. Sad times.
    Fred was a hard working legend. Lovely bloke passionate to the end about what he did in life. He explained the defining point in British decline as a world leader in Industry and Inventions.
    A great teacher, hard working genuine easy to like bloke from Bolton. Maybe in a way the stealing of parts of his lovely restored engines after his passing just sums up current Britain.

    @benters3509 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    A note of sanity here. There are no heroes in this story. Watching all of the videos about Fred’s life, especially the early years, he came over as a very selfish man. He treated his first wife (Alison?) very badly. “I’ve got to fix my engine, no holidays!” Well, she stuck it for a long time, but finally cleared out. Followed by his second wife. And then you have the mindless sh!ts that break into a dead man’s house and steal his life’s work. I’m guessing that if the various factions of his family had not been fighting over the stuff, then it would have been saved. His third wife was just cut out of everything - including Fred’s will - and now she has to do the heavy lifting. They ought to make a documentary, the final episode of his life, about the war going on between the various branches of his family. Largely his fault, I would say.

      Fred looked at life through a victorian man's eyes...that's what life was like back then..fred was a guy out of his time..he SHOULD have been born in the victorian era...he wasn't selfish..he was just himself...and any of the 3 wives knew what they were getting when they married him...better him being like that...than a violent drunk...or an unemployed bum.....Fred worked HARD and did jobs only a handful of people were able to....stop with the negative...no one is perfect.

  • @povethestud
    @povethestud 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It astounds me how these billionaire money people like SIR Jim Ratcliffe or SIR James Dyson couldn't recognise that keeping all this wealth of industrial knowledge complete and thus charging an entry fee to see it (as a simple matter of preserving British Heritage as a business venture) this place could have sustained many jobs locally in opening it up as a walk around museum / education centre. The local and distant schools could have benefitted from this and without doubt would have been visited by millions of people from far and wide...even worldwide.
    Fred Dibnah was a legend of Great Britain. He was everything British... which is now sadly almost dissolved. SMH
