Now 79 years old and a fellow steam engine owner, I had the privilege of Knowing Fred and spent so many happy hours with him at rallies and his premises at Bolton. I have eaten meals with him and his family in that house. It is nothing short of criminal and ignorant they way both he and his property has been ignored by the local council, gold diggers and others, they should be utterly ashamed of themselves. I literally shed tears watching this piece of film. Rest easy Fred. Bill Scurlock

I just watched the video of Fred putting in the threaded rods across his house because he was a bit worried about the bowing out of the brickwork at the back. That’s where the square plates with large nuts are at pavement level in the front. They connect to the round embellishments at the rear above the windows. What a man.
Having been blessed by knowing fred I watched this episode and greatly enjoyed the gentleman's respect he showed when invited by the new owners of Fred's old home to go and see the shed and yard, it is a poiniant reminder of what once was, then to be invited into the house was a great joy, Fred's presence is everywhere there, he was indeed a talented multi crafter and master of much, the biker gentleman to my mind showed his respect throughout and seemed genuinely saddened at Fred's final resting place, bless you sir, fred would have been pleased to chat to you, he was just that type 9f guy, he loved to chat, a real man of the people...seldom have I seen such reverence, thank you for a lovely production, and safe biking to you sir....respect to you Daevid
It's lovely to see that people still respect and support this beautiful place. Fred was definitely 1 of a kind no doubt about it. Unfortunately though, it is a shame the grounds and his workshop's are just a shell of what they were. I heard that Jack, his eldest. Had gone on to do engineering? And whoever had bought the ground before had sold on a lot of stuff? I don't know how true that is. I think Jack was quite involved with the steam engines after Fred had passed, but for how long I don't know. But it's really great to see that people still respect and pay a visit to a very special place indeed. You'll always be forever remembered Fred 🍻🏗🚂🇬🇧👍
I was stood outside of his house a few months ago and a chap asked me if I wanted a look around. So he gave me a tour. I’ve met Fred a number of times, usually at steam ups and once on the train but I’d never been in his house. I always pay my respects at Tonge cemetery whenever I’m up that way. I’m glad you saw his house too, but it’s all very empty without him and a very sad end and grave to a simply brilliant man.☹️
A great insight into a true north west legend, My father-in-law was a scrap dealer he knew him well , how nice of the owner to show you round. A great little video.
Going back a few years ago the previous owner (Leon) allowed myself and my wife to stay for a w/e and we slept in Fred's bedroom. And we had the run of the house and garden. Absolutely fantastic. We met Fred's side kick Alf had photos taken. We also went to tong cemetery to take tribute to Fred. Lots of memories. Ps when standing outside the side entrance look at the ground you will see the impressions of his steam roller as it came out. Can you remember the program where he is felling a chimney and he has a heavy black and white pullover on. What was left of it was in the garage on the floor.
Yes I had that pleasure as well, albeit a few years back now. Amazing place but OMG so much of Fred's stuff was got rid of by the previous owner. Such a shame.
So glad to see his house has not been totally destroyed and is being respected again at last. Thank you for sharing this. He truly was a great man, his enthusiasm for steam engines, mining, industrial and medieval history and construction was inspirational to me and I'm sure to many others. A lot of knowledge and experience has died with him, but he did teach us all so much in his documentaries. He will not be forgotten.
The place should be bought up by Bolton and turned into a Fred Dibnah heritage centre. Fully restored to what it was like, when Fred and family were there.
The home had already been the Fred Dibnah heritage centre, nobody wanted to carry it on when owners put it up on market, but you are right, only everything was auctioned before house sale due to lack of interest.

Wow, you really got lucky to get a full tour of the house! We went a few days ago and some workmen saw us looking and invited us to look around the yard. I didn't know there was a mineshaft. I took loads of photos and saw they had opened the back door. I walked up to take a photo of the Rayburn cooker through the doorway and they said we could go inside! We had a good look around the kitchen. There was a dartboard and pictures of Fred on the wall. Afterwards, we went to see his statue in the town centre. I met a lovely old man who knew Fred.

I make armour for a living so I share Fred's obsession with rivets! This location could have been such an important heritage centre... reminding the next generation that not everything can be bought with an app nor created in resin with a 3-D printer! Hand to eye skills, that unexplainable joyful feeling we have when something born of sweat' tears and cunning comes to life for the first time! It doesn't matter if that thing is a clock or a steam-engine, this is the ingenuity that built England, and it's this same skill-set hat will save it once again when the lights go out. RIP legend, I am however happy to see that at least the current owners respect Fred's legacy even though it's beating, steaming heart has been removed. Best wishes from a French forest. ⚒️🇬🇧⚒️
Very well stated Sir. I'm from the Maryland, in the US, and I think the character of Mr. Dibnah's appeal is universal. Hi lived his full life true to the era he loved - and he was exceptional in all aspects of it. A great true man and soul. We're lucky to have these preserved recordings in my opinion.

Fred was born to late. I’m sure Brunel and Fred if in the Era would have come up with some great inventions.
As a boy, Fred was my hero. I wanted to be a steeplejack when I left school, but was diagnosed with BPPV during my apprenticeship. I eventually got over it and became a drafter. RIP Fred.
I felt certain that Bolton Council or the National Trust would have bought Fred's house lock stock and barrel. The wonderful and unique character of Fred is now famous across the globe thanks to TH-cam etc. I echo the sentiments of many at the lost opportunity to preserve the legacy he left in Bolton. I can hardly bear to watch this video. RIP Fred- hope you're enjoying a few pints of 'pop' in heaven!
Used to see him at the steam fair in Urmston when I was a kid he was a nice guy used to chat to us showing his vehicles he loved and was proud of owning them
That was so kind of the new owner to let you have a look around Freds old home, I would have thought the local authority would have bought it all complete to preserve it as Fred knew it and turned it into a museum. When I visited the Yorkshire mining museum Fred had visited it in the morning, we were meant to go in the morning but got delayed and so ended up arriving for the early afternoon tour.
Fred was a national treasure and the salt of the earth, I never had the pleasure of meeting the great man but he will never be forgotten, Boltonians must have been so proud of him. May God bless you Fred, sadly missed.

I think Fred would be happy that he doesn't have an extravagant grave, just something simple for a simple man (that's how he saw himself). And yeah, I think that Bolton council missed a trick by not putting the house into a trust, not just for Fred's memory, but to showcase the past history of the area.
I'm surprised Birmingham and Aberdeen universities haven't posthumously rescinded his honoraries, given his straight-talking nature and love of British history. Very sad watching this, I'm not spiritual at all, but there was an eeriness about the shed with echoes of him working out there. Used to love watching his series as a teenager in the early 80s.
I wish his gravestone reflected much more about Fred, something similar to the Blue Plaque at the entrance to his house. It would also be nice for the Trust to perhaps get some volunteers to keep his grave in better order. I am sure there would be no shortage of volunteers, happy to honour a truly great man.
Engineers such as Fred, we don't have anymore. Mainly because here in England we don't have the industries that shaped blokes like Fred! Legend of a man.
I went here when Leon still owned it, just before he had to sell things off.... the place was practically un touched really, the pit head gear was still there end the engine he uses for winding (raising and lowering the bucket) his tool shed was a mess!! But a meas fred had left it in, organised chaos. I met his mate Alf... there was a small burner they were using in the big shes just to warm place up, the burner was actually the old boiler from Betsy that was found behind the sheds... his original steam shop engine has gone but there was another in place, no traction engines were there... the place is amazing and if I had the money is out it back to how he had it, being back the steam driven work shop, and allow the few that can to use to it to so repairs on old chimneys and steam engines... I once helped restore a mill engine, there phenomenal machines my only regret is it never got to fully run and still hasn't 14 years later.
Fred Dibnah was a very talented man in my opinion, always sad to see his home with new owners and thinking of all that went on there when he was working on his personal projects! R.I.P Fred🙂
Fred was an amazing man, it seems there wasn’t much he couldn’t do.I only learned of him a couple of years ago when I ran across a few short videos on you tube, that’s all it took and I was hooked. This video you made is very good but also very sad. In other videos I’ve seen, the yard was full of activity, men working on various pieces of machinery and Fred operating a steam powered winch, digging in the mine shaft. Now sadly it’s all gone. He truly is the last of a dying breed. I live in America and if I ever get to England I would love to see his house in person, I wish I could have met him, who knows maybe in the next life. Once again, you video was very good. Thank you for posting it.
at the end of the day "we" cannot turn everything into a museum. Life goes on, even if it is a grade 2 listed building, a fact that some previous comments seem not to understand when moaning about lack of council "action"

Fred's documentarys kept you captivated from the first minute to the last minute his knowledge and drawings was amazing fred new what he was talking about you get actor's politicians and news readers working off a script not our fred so much knowledge god bless you young man❤

Im what you might call across the pond a "Yank" but ive seen almost all of his videos from when i was a kid and im 40 now. Its great to see that his place is still there and not falling down. Im sad to hear that the previous owners desecrated it but hopefully this new owner will get it in shape. Not many people like fred in this world close to none in the states where im at. Men like Fred were my inspiration to get into the trades. Im in auto repair myself but steam engineering really fascinates me. R.I.P. to a one of a kind!
I remember my friends dad watching Fred on tv telling me 20 someodd years ago , what a legend Fred was. And I couldnt agree more today...and I live in Canada, he certainly had an effect on the world

Imo I think it should have been purchased by someone on the condition that everything is left alone. The house and grounds should be a time capsule of Fred’s life. He truly is an English legend and his memory deserves better treatment. In 20 years the house won’t resemble anything that Fred built. Very sad. He’ll definitely be spinning in his grave.
I met Fred on a number occasions always a true gent, he was behind me in shop on Bury Rd once he only had a packet of crumpets so I let him go infant of me, he turned round to lady on till and said "that lady said she'd pay" 😅😅 such a funny guy

His last wife leeched everything and the UK and Bolton couldn't care less about poor Fred . What a Country we live in .

I think Fred would be happy that he doesn't have an extravagant grave, just something simple for a simple man (that's how he saw himself). And yeah, I think that Bolton council missed a trick by not putting the house into a trust, not just for Fred's memory, but to showcase the past history of the area.
I agree on all counts.
I'm surprised Birmingham and Aberdeen universities haven't posthumously rescinded his honoraries, given his straight-talking nature and love of British history. Very sad watching this, I'm not spiritual at all, but there was an eeriness about the shed with echoes of him working out there. Used to love watching his series as a teenager in the early 80s.
I wish his gravestone reflected much more about Fred, something similar to the Blue Plaque at the entrance to his house. It would also be nice for the Trust to perhaps get some volunteers to keep his grave in better order. I am sure there would be no shortage of volunteers, happy to honour a truly great man.
Engineers such as Fred, we don't have anymore. Mainly because here in England we don't have the industries that shaped blokes like Fred! Legend of a man.
They were certainly built of honest labor and intelligence.
I went here when Leon still owned it, just before he had to sell things off.... the place was practically un touched really, the pit head gear was still there end the engine he uses for winding (raising and lowering the bucket) his tool shed was a mess!! But a meas fred had left it in, organised chaos. I met his mate Alf... there was a small burner they were using in the big shes just to warm place up, the burner was actually the old boiler from Betsy that was found behind the sheds... his original steam shop engine has gone but there was another in place, no traction engines were there... the place is amazing and if I had the money is out it back to how he had it, being back the steam driven work shop, and allow the few that can to use to it to so repairs on old chimneys and steam engines... I once helped restore a mill engine, there phenomenal machines my only regret is it never got to fully run and still hasn't 14 years later.
Fred Dibnah was a very talented man in my opinion, always sad to see his home with new owners and thinking of all that went on there when he was working on his personal projects! R.I.P Fred🙂

Fred was an amazing man, it seems there wasn’t much he couldn’t do.I only learned of him a couple of years ago when I ran across a few short videos on you tube, that’s all it took and I was hooked. This video you made is very good but also very sad. In other videos I’ve seen, the yard was full of activity, men working on various pieces of machinery and Fred operating a steam powered winch, digging in the mine shaft. Now sadly it’s all gone. He truly is the last of a dying breed. I live in America and if I ever get to England I would love to see his house in person, I wish I could have met him, who knows maybe in the next life. Once again, you video was very good. Thank you for posting it.

at the end of the day "we" cannot turn everything into a museum. Life goes on, even if it is a grade 2 listed building, a fact that some previous comments seem not to understand when moaning about lack of council "action"
If British history was to be preserved which it isn't ,Bolton council would have turned the place into a museum.

You did a wonderful job on Fred he was a very remarkable man and he was very well thought of and people will never forget him and the new owner of the home look like he is trying to keep red's memory living I'm glad to see that I wonder what happened to Fred's truck and steam engines
He was definitely a character, I loved watching him taking down a tall chimney and how he explained how. Old school intelligent guy.
Sad to see it like that but I suppose we are lucky it's still standing with all the development that's gone on.

Fred's documentarys kept you captivated from the first minute to the last minute his knowledge and drawings was amazing fred new what he was talking about you get actor's politicians and news readers working off a script not our fred so much knowledge god bless you young man❤
I feel like you.. Butter sweet and he should have a chimney.. I'm sure he wanted to pass through his pit which was leading to the cemetery... Its sad to see his gravestones so crap tbh... His legasy will always live on 😊
For it is not the house you seek since it was there before and after the man, it is the man’s spirit you seek who has gone ahead. May the good Lord have had mercy on his soul I pray Fred knew him as his savior
Thanks for the video you did a wonderful job with what you had to work with. I have always wanted to see inside his house not as big as it looks form the out side . Definitely brought a tear to my eye to see what has happened to all his things. The BBC should have looked after him better after his passing. What a guy

Im what you might call across the pond a "Yank" but ive seen almost all of his videos from when i was a kid and im 40 now. Its great to see that his place is still there and not falling down. Im sad to hear that the previous owners desecrated it but hopefully this new owner will get it in shape. Not many people like fred in this world close to none in the states where im at. Men like Fred were my inspiration to get into the trades. Im in auto repair myself but steam engineering really fascinates me. R.I.P. to a one of a kind!

I remember my friends dad watching Fred on tv telling me 20 someodd years ago , what a legend Fred was. And I couldnt agree more today...and I live in Canada, he certainly had an effect on the world

I didn't know him but I saw fred and his family out in his steam roller and attached caravan, with family, back in the mid seventies.
As u was mentioning the items at the grave site,i said,,,where's the ornate chimney, and cast iron chain link surround 😢he even says in one of the vids,when im 6 foot under ill have a grate big chimney monument for a head stone😅 it was quite sad😢but then he was a spend it when u got it ,cos u cant take it with ya😅 brilliant vid,thanks 4 sharing it👍great timing on your behalf,,🤔perhaps he knew u was visiting👍cheers..
I have no idea how he wa able to build those engines/ the sheds/ the driveway/ the house / have so many kids and wives/ dismantle all those chimneys brick by brick/ and so so much more in he's relatively short life .... amazing
The man certainly loved his work, and he was at peace with himself. Much admiration for that, and money wasn't important to him.
How wonderful that the current owners let you look around. Listening to his accent I could hear Ted talking. ❤
Imo I think it should have been purchased by someone on the condition that everything is left alone. The house and grounds should be a time capsule of Fred’s life. He truly is an English legend and his memory deserves better treatment. In 20 years the house won’t resemble anything that Fred built. Very sad. He’ll definitely be spinning in his grave.

I met Fred on a number occasions always a true gent, he was behind me in shop on Bury Rd once he only had a packet of crumpets so I let him go infant of me, he turned round to lady on till and said "that lady said she'd pay" 😅😅 such a funny guy

Mr Uncle Fred to me there when I was a kid, Fred would have been in his mid 20s, he gave me a motor as I was interested in anything mechanical I’m now 71 👴🏻👍
