Downtown Detroit, Michigan, is the central business district and a residential area with a rich history and ongoing revitalization.
Geography: Downtown Detroit is generally considered to span a 1.4 square mile area, bordered by M-10 (Lodge Freeway) to the west, Interstate 75 (I-75, Fisher Freeway) to the north, I-375 (Chrysler Freeway) to the east, and the Detroit River to the south. A broader definition, "Greater Downtown," extends this to 7.2 square miles, including neighborhoods like Midtown, Corktown, Rivertown, and Woodbridge.
Architecture and Landmarks: The area is known for its historic architecture, including skyscrapers like the Renaissance Center, the Penobscot Building, One Detroit Center, and the Guardian Building. Other notable landmarks include the Fox Theatre, Campus Martius Park, and the Detroit International Riverfront.
Transportation: The area is accessible via the QLINE streetcar, the Detroit People Mover, and various bus services. There's also significant pedestrian and bike infrastructure, making downtown walkable and bike-friendly.
