    something that i like doing is doing a stride in between each drill. the theory is that doing the stride helps incorporate the muscles that you recruit from the drills in your actual running form. i don't know if you do this already but i think it's a worthwhile step for me when i run.

    • @HarryRunsUK
      @HarryRunsUK  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes certainly a worthwhile step, striding out from the drill is great!

    I like how u save us time by short video & getting to the pt quickly. (for time pressed viewers) May I suggest, if u aren't already thinking it, subtitles/inserts to help illustrate your points as well as get/peak yer viewers attention levels. Thanks for reminding me/us of basics we need to consistently do as its too easy to get "off-track" (in many ways/shapes/forms). Keep vid's coming. Hope u grow (rich....too)!!!

    Great videos Harry, simple and useful tips. I haven't being doing strides for ages so will do again starting from tomorrow! Your half marathon and tempo run tips really working for me but I'm struggling with the long runs. Any tips for those, regarding pace, objectives preparation, recovery time, etc? Gotta get ready for my first marathon!

    • @HarryRunsUK
      @HarryRunsUK  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +runaao Tips for the long runs, especially if you're new to them. Keep them at a conversational pace in which you could happily chat along to a friend the whole way. Plan your route before hand to reduce likelihood or cutting the run short etc...Try and get a group or training partner along with you always easier to train and keep up these long runs with company. The pace will feel easy which is good and possibly slow to start but as you get stronger and fitter pace will naturally increase without extra effort. Aim to get up to at least 32km coming up to your first marathon. As you get more confident with these runs adding some progressive miles towards the end will help get your stronger mentally and physically coming into the marathon. How long have you got until your marathon?

    • @runaao
      @runaao 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Harry Runs Great getting an answer from you :) I'm in no hurry, I'll just register to a marathon in my area when I feel ready, either in spring or autumn. I'm keeping the long runs nice and slow, running with a kamelbak with an isotonic drink, having some fruit puree after 15km, keeping my stride short and cadence over 90, but legs still feel quite battered afterwards (even though alterning hot and cold pools does help). I run 3 times a week, 1 day I'll do series, another day tempo run and a another day a long run, summing up to 45/50km/week, which is more than I have been use to. I have been running for the last 10 years, but just 20/25km/per week. I've been building up distance slowly but fitting 3 running sessions + 1 leg workout session and 1 of core workout (abs, lumbar) is not easy! Takes me 3 days to recover from the long run, until I can do all the rest of the weekly plan! Is that normal? I don't want to run or workout until I feel recovered. Do you workout too? My glutes, gluteus medius and hamstrings feel week and suffer the most from the long runs. I've only done 23km twice, 25km once. Max distance I used to run was 18km but 25km+ looks like another level to me right now! Will try 26km this week end! But I should probably rest the day before too!! Maybe a long run a week is too much? Many questions mate!!

    • @HarryRunsUK
      @HarryRunsUK  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +runaao No at least one long run a week is vital in building up endurance for a marathon. Sounds like you'd benefit from at least one or two more runs a week to get more time on your legs which would really help them get stronger, and handle the miles better. Just a couple or one 30minute run just easy would help with recovery and build your miles up. Yes I workout but I'm not a fan of heavy weights, as I've done a lot of weights in the past and found it made me to heavy in runs etc for too long. As mentioned if you just do a real easy run, recovery run then it would speed up the recovery process. Email me if you'd like to ask any more questions harryrunsuk@gmail.com we could Skype if you wanted to work through your questions and I could help you out with a training programme. Happy running! :)

    do you stretch before you do a 5k, or only after?

    • @HarryRunsUK
      @HarryRunsUK  8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I generally don't do too much stretching before I run if any at all. If I'm doing a hard session I make sure I do some dynamic drills that work through a good range of movement too make sure all the joints are warm and ready. If you still have some specific tightness after a good warm up and drills, then might be a good idea to do some stretching. I would recommend doing some stretching and flexibility work throughout the week however, after runs and sessions. Focusing on lower legs, calf achilles, hamstring and hips, too reduce likelihood of picking up injuries in these areas.

    What are the best running shoes to get started? Thanks.

    • @HarryRunsUK
      @HarryRunsUK  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The best running shoes you can get to start running are the shoes you have already! Getting out the door is the first and most important step. But overall if you were looking to get new shoes or running shoes I would recommend, something with good cushioning, comfortable on your foot, correct sizing (at least a thumb width of space for your toes to splay), and suits the needs you have for the shoe. If you are running trails then you might need more of a trail shoe with good tread to handle uneven surfaces, if you are running road then a road shoe will be your best choice.

      If you go to a 'running store' there are usually very helpful people who will measure your feet for length and width, and also record your running style and how your feet hit the ground. Then they will help you find a great pair to start.

    What upper body workouts do you do for XC training?

    • @HarryRunsUK
      @HarryRunsUK  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not too much upper body for me these days, the occasional pull ups, press ups etc...I used to do a fair bit of climbing, bouldering and drumming in the past so still retain some muscle and strength from those days. Core is focused in my training though, plank variations and routines to have a solid base. Running with bottles on long runs too :-p

    I run a 2:14 800 any tips to run a 2:00 over the offseason?

    • @HarryRunsUK
      @HarryRunsUK  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Tristian Abrams Cutting 14 secs off your 800m is a big ask. As I don't know your current training protocol etc I can just generalize a few things. You need to be working on getting yourself running consistent and comfortable 60s 400m. I would be hitting some 400's sessions, 600s efforts close too 2.00min pace so in 90secs. As well as working on some pure anaerobic, speed work. If you're PR is 2.14 at the moment then it will take a lot of work. I would recommend making sure you're working within your abilities, not over training, having a good plan to work off and giving yourself ample recovery and rest. Injury isn't fun and chasing big time goals can easily lead down this path, so go slow and remember improvement is improvement, whether its 5 secs or a split sec, so be proud of any running gains and aim for consistency, you'll reach your goal if you really want it, but the off season might not be the time to get there, but you'll be setting yourself up for a strong season and years of running ahead. Take things slow, stay injury free and you'll surpass your goal somewhere down the line. If you'd like any further help, give me an email: harryrunsuk@gmail.com
