It's only a shame that his version of Long John Silver wasn't in any of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Him interacting with Johnny Depp and/or Geoffrey Rush would've been more golden than the treasure that pirates typically hunt for.
Funt Fact! Pirates actually did have performances on their ships; sang songs, acted out plays, and had free form "rap battles". There are still songs you hear along the coasts that originated or are thought to have originated from pirates/sailors (Drunken Sailor from earlier in the film is a good example) so, maybe one of them did write and preform something like this!

LynchMobFilms actually the first lawyer joke Disney ever made was in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. When Mr. Toad is accused of stealing a motorcar, his horse Cyril comes to court to testify. When Cyril says Toad got the motorcar the honest way, the prosecutor asks “what is the honest way?” To which Cyril replies “I thought you wouldn’t know that, guv’nor”
I was expecting "I could've been a lawyer but I didn't have the heart" because that would be a twist on the cliche. As a lawyer joke it wouldn't pass the bar. Lawyer jokes are like lawyers, they're not clever.
I love that line and the “ I couldve been in politics because ive always been a big spender” line. Both are lines you miss/gloss over as a child but notice when older. Makes the movie even more enjoyable 😂.
I know this comment is 13 years old but i just have to say Yeah if tim curry was the captain i'd become a pirate in a heartbeat. I know i'd probably end up swinging from a noose but i know damn well the journey to the gallows will be a Fun one.
I skim-read your comment a bit too fast, and for a few seconds I thought you'd written "This song has convinced me to quit my job and become Tim Curry."
You just know that Long John legitimately liked and cared about Jim. He was an evil person who would do whatever he HAD to, but would genuinely prefer to go about it in a friendly, nonviolent way. A criminal to the core, but in every other way, a good guy. Utterly sincere.
Is really a bad guy?. I mean this was a time when the British were trading slaves and invading countries, so leading some pirates actually seems more noble than what their bosses were doing.
Charlton Heston and Jack Palance did a good job as well but Tim Curry was the first Long John Sliver for me and helped me love the story of treasure island from movies to the book.
His diction, the perfect pauses, the belly laugh, perfection. I love him as Hook, the concierge in Home Alone, Clue, Toxic, my favorite is Cardinale Richlieu in The Three Musketeers. A wonderful actor. A private man. A class act.

"Cuz when you're a professional piiiiraaate...." "You don't have to wear a suit" XD LOL Muppet Treaure Island will forever be one of my favorite movies.
Treasure island is a classic story that has been done many times. Long John Silver is one of the great characters of literature and the best film portrayal of that character was done by an actor in a movie with puppets. There's something beautiful about that.
I've always loved Muppet Treasure Island ever since I was really little, and I still enjoy it, even nowadays. This movie is so memorable (at least in my opinion) that it will NEVER get old for me, even despite my current age.
So Have I. At first, I thought it was just a pirate film but now it turns out to be the muppet's version of Treasure Island, the famous pirate novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was interesting how gonzo & rizzo were added as Jim Hawkins' best friends & how Beaker also stepped in as Dr Livesey's assistant.
This movie came out when I was a toddler, and it is by FAR still to this day my favorite Muppet movie. I know that Jim Henson had passed away beforehand, but man, this movie is just so magical, I just love it!
indeed he is one multi talented performer ! and his performance as Cardinal Richelieu in the three musketeers is my favorite performance and portrayal of the cardinal ever!
still it's extremely sad he had a stroke awhile back and is now in a wheelchair plus he's no longer as extremely young as he used to be like here in Muppet treasure Island
When asked in an interview if there was ever a "Love that got away," (to paraphrase) that he wished he'd pursued, but failed to, Tim Curry said, "Yes... Miss Piggy."
I'm surprised how skillfully understated Tim Curry is in this movie; he usually was an eye-rolling over-doing scene stealer. He may have realized he couldn't out-mug the Muppets and honorably played it straight. Very effective, fun stuff (and, sadly, as he says, his "only number").
It's his only lead singing song but he does have a part in Sailing for Adventure. Still, a fantastic actor playing the role perfectly, it's straight but still in the exaggerated manner that fits with the Muppets.
I loved this movie when I was a kid, and watching it now it surprises me how many adult jokes sneak through kids' movies. ("I coulda been a contenda..." from Down on the Waterfront). Tim Curry is so fantastic here, too. One of my favorite actors.

See that pirate guy standing on SCREEN RIGHT next to Tim Curry (Long John Silver)? I have no idea who that guy is but I think he's wonderful. Very attentive and expressive!
It's also a reference to the 1954 film starring Marlon Brando: "On the Waterfront". The full(ish) quote is: "I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody. Instead of a bum. Which is what I am".
My husband and I are listening to the excellent Classic Tales podcast by BJ Harrison doing TREASURE ISLAND in seven episodes and it is fabulous! The only equal to BJ's (voice) Captain Hook is Tim Curry. Now we must see the Muppets' movie again. We haven't seen it since we were kids. Can't wait.
Since I was a kid, anytime I think of Long John Silver I see Tim Curry :) He fit the role perfectly like no one else ever could/can! Oh, and Hans Zimmer's composition here is AMAZING, it's no wonder Disney called him back for Pirates of the Caribbean!
Honestly, the title credits for this film is an INSANELY good pirate theme - I wonder if he regretted using it up on a Muppet movie instead of keeping his powder dry for a film like POTC! (probably not, given how insanely good that music is as well - but the thought of it always makes me smile!)
Jim was right. All the theatrics aside they're nothing but murdering pirates. Long John is trying to convert Jim with greed. All he asks for is for Jim's compass. A symbol for his actual moral compass that belonged to his father. We see the pirates smile and singing while they steal and kill each other. Gonzo and Rizzo later in the scene tag along with Smollet just because Jim is family. They don't need any other motivation. Like Long John said earlier in the movie, "true friends are worth their weight in gold." We see the pirates turn on Long John when they discover the gold has been taken. This is why Long John can't kill Jim. He was the only one who couldn't be corrupted by greed. Jim lives on to journey with his family while Long John presumably dies alone with his gold. Anyway I'm still listening to this banger a decade later.
It's a great adaptation but I still think the 1990 version is the best overall, and of the disney-owned versions, Treasure Planet beats it for the solar punk aesthetic and the best Jim/Silver relationship arc out of all of them.

Disney needs to start making muppet versions of other books,I'd kill for muppets Dracula or 20,000 leagues under the sea
00:14 always loved the reveal of John Silver in his Pirate duds. I remember being a kid and seeing this in the theater and that moment was so badass.
The way he laughs and how shady he is is hilarious🤣
I love this song, it's my favorite in the movie!
Tim Curry is THE MAN!
Same
Still the best Muppet movie, IMO.
0:58 Look at Jim Hawkin's reaction when Long John starts singing. He's like, "Huh?".lol.
LOL never noticed that. And his eyes move back and forth in time with the song.
He's been nonchalant about the Muppety stuff so far and suddenly now he's confused? Of course now it's also the humans doing it so...
It's also a reference to the 1954 film starring Marlon Brando: "On the Waterfront". The full(ish) quote is: "I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody. Instead of a bum. Which is what I am".
And this is why I had a crush on Tim Curry as a kid
Then this year I saw him in Rocky Horror Picture show ---- it only fueled the flame LOL
Same
...lol
My husband and I are listening to the excellent Classic Tales podcast by BJ Harrison doing TREASURE ISLAND in seven episodes and it is fabulous! The only equal to BJ's (voice) Captain Hook is Tim Curry. Now we must see the Muppets' movie again. We haven't seen it since we were kids. Can't wait.
He acts like this is the most important role of his life, and frankly he may be right.
I don't know, I think the Rocky Horror Picture Show is up there
He has said in interviews it's one of his favorite roles he ever got to do! Apparently he is a big Muppets fan.
Best film ever so glad to had been a child when it came out.
This song randomly popped into my head this was one of my favorite movies growing up
Man i miss the old days. This song makes me miss the 90s
I've always loved this movie. So funny and I love the songs.
That Silver fellow may not be entirely trustworthy...
lordjimbo2 now he tells us
What gave you that idea? I’m sure We can trust him, and we can trust Captain Barbosa😂
@@questworldiangreenknight7455 its a quote said by kermit at the start of them film
I think Robert Louis Stevenson would be very proud of this movie XD
"Upstage lads. This is my ONLY Number!"
Stop breaking the fourth wall, Long John.
He actually is a Muppet! They made a Muppet version of his character!
Go to the Muppet wiki and look it up!
One of my all time fav Tim Curry characters
I can watch this movie one hundred times and it wouldn’t get old
I remember having this on vhs as a kid and watching it so many times
As a descendant of Robert Louis Stevenson, I say this is the BEST adaptation of Treasure Island ever!
Cool opinion
Uh-uh! You’re related to Stevenson?!
@@coadjacob Either he is a descendant of the author or hes just such a big fan of his famous pirate novel.
I love Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as well. Fun fact. Long John Silver really met Captain Hook. It’s literally a canon thing!!!!
It's a great adaptation but I still think the 1990 version is the best overall, and of the disney-owned versions, Treasure Planet beats it for the solar punk aesthetic and the best Jim/Silver relationship arc out of all of them.
